Levin On Michigan Do-Over: Ain't Happening

Sen. Carl Levin said on Friday that he did not view a "do-over" of the Michigan primary as a practical way of getting the state's delegates seated at the convention.

"Michigan Democrats have for years argued against the unfair and irrational system in which New Hampshire and Iowa almost always have a hugely disproportionate impact on our presidential nominating process," a statement from his office read. A DNC commission reviewed the system and recommended a new sequence for 2008 in which New Hampshire would hold the third nomination contest. It was only after New Hampshire indicated its intention to violate the new sequence -- and the DNC's failure to enforce its own rules in light of New Hampshire's violation of those rules -- that Michigan decided it would move up its primary to January 15. The DNC subsequently voted to strip Michigan of its convention delegates."

Levin's office expanded on the statement, saying that the senator thought there were too many "financial and logistical hurdles" for holding another primary vote. "In any event believes that a change in course would require acceptance by both candidates."

Levin's statement comes after word leaked on Thursday that Michigan could be holding a re-do caucus election. The state, along with Florida, was stripped of its delegates for moving up their primaries in the electoral calendar. Sen. Bill Nelson, who hails from the Sunshine State, has said that he is in favor of a do-over primary in Florida.

Levin's office said it was attempting to rsolve the Michigan delegate dispute in collaboration with over Democratic officials and the two presidential campaigns. If nothing was resolved, the matter would be turned over to the Democratic Convention Credentials Committee.

There is an agreement, and all parties sign that agreement. That if Michigan and Flordia moved up their primary. They wouldn't be able to seat their delagates. It pretty straight forward. It would be the same if one sign an agreement to buy a car, and the dealership has a return policy of three days, and one tried and return the car after a year. The car dealer will tell you to get lost, because you sign an agreement, you have to live with the agreement. The same applies to michigan and Flordia delegates

I don't think it is that simple. How can two states with large populations be stripped of their voting rights because Dean has determined that only Iowa and NH can have the first primaries? All parties signed the agreements? Did FL and MI sign some agreement that they wouldn't have their primaries early? I don't think so!

Yeah, they did. I'm from Michigan, and have followed this fiasco since last September when our delegates were stripped. The 50 state Democratic parties agreed to the calendar in advance.

If there is no do over there should only be one other choice, leave it as it is now.

For no reason should following the rules be a punishable action. If it didn't look like a last string for the Clintons to latch on to there would be no contention over the votes.

That said, only a re-do is fair. The states knew last summer that if they took that action they would loose. Rules are rules. Unless you are a Clinton. Then, only winning matters. To them rules are for the loosers.

Nothing is more unfair than not counting more than 3 million votes .

Here's a good way to make them count: release all FL and MI delegates to act as superdelegates. They'll pledge to the candidates they want in the first place--no harm, no foul.

The Democratic candidates need to tone it down or risk tearing the party apart.

If they can't unite themselves, how do you expect either of them to unite the country?

NeoLiberal - you are a NeoIdiot -- who will pick the delegates? Delegates are already free to vote for anyone they wish to vote for at the national convention. That's why Hillary has been trying to convince delegates who are already pledged to Obama to defect and vote for her at the convention. The point of primaries and caucuses are to decide how many delegates each candidate gets. When each candidate knows how many delegates they'll get, they then decide who will be the delegates -- those chosen will presumably vote for their candidate at the convention. Delegates aren't just hanging out in FL and MI bummed out that they aren't invited to Denver.

Hillary won both states and I think she should get the delegates!

Be a man Barack . You chose to take you name off the ballot in Michigan .You have to live with your decision {judgment} . Accept the will of the voters in Fl and Mi accept votes from all 50 states . Its not over and you could still win the big ticket . The question is are you willing ? Or would winning like Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens or George Bush be ok for you "a new kind of politician" a new kind of inclusiveness . We are slowly learning the truth about the real Barrack . despite the willingness of the media to do it's job .

The delegate-producing portion of the ballots in Florida and Michigan had been declared invalid.
Obama did the right thing, not to be associated with a document, which his party deemed bunko.
Can't change the rules after the fact, without both candidates' permission. I do my share of whining, nosanity, but get a grip. Hillary has no claim to all those invalid votes...they are invalid.

I was just following orders . Obama bots supporters of votericide . The people of florida and michigan broke no rules and had no choice yet they stood up in record numbers to be heard and the newest great uniter {G.W. was the first} wants to divide those votes from the votes that went for him . Nothing Bush lite about that .

Obama took his name off the ballot in Michigan .He used his sound and far supperior judgement and decided uh ah that the uh people of uh Michigan and the uh people of uh Florida would uh understand and uh appreciate that do to powers beyond there control there votes will not count . He apparently thinks very little of the Voters in Michigan and Florida or he just isn't running to be there president . Count the vote as certified according to state law . Count the vote . This should not even be considered worthy of discussion not counting 3 million plus votes .

What Howard Dean neglected to mention about the DNC Credentials Committee

The DNC Credentials Committee is made up of 3 people. Those 3 people ALL SERVED in the Cinton Administration

That leads us to the three co-chairs of the DNC Credentials Committee: Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt, Jr. and Aliseo Roques-Arroyo. All three of them served in the Clinton Administration. Okay, as far as we know they are all reputable, upstanding people, but if you were Hillary Clinton and these three people worked for you and your husband during the 8 presidential years Hillary includes on her "35 years of experience," wouldn't you feel like you might have some influence on the three co-chairs? After all, the decision of the DNC Credentials Committee will be political; this is not a judicial process.

How does Hillary think that a do-over in either state would be "disenfrachisement?" How can she claim this with a straight face?

How does Hillary think that endorsing McCain will help her out in the long run? If 'experience' is the most important qualification, she is MUCH weaker than McCain and is setting herself up for failure in the general.

Her stance on both do-over primaries and the "experience" issue suggest that short term gains are the only consideration, and if it costs Democrats in the general election, then so be it. VERY short sighted.

How does she do anything with a straight face?

Obama turned down a offer in Michigan of a "Fire House" Primary, Voting would be between the hours of 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. I guess Obama only like the Caucuses. Obama is just trying to delay his loss, he is DONE but Hillary said he could be the V.P. if the Rezko dirt doesn't stick

Rules Person: "Here are the rules. Kick off."
Half time.
Team A: "I don't like the rules. You have to change them."
Team B: "We played by the rules."
Rules Person: "Well, maybe we should change the rules."
End of Game. Winner: McCain.

What the hell is going on here?!

I don't see what the big fucking deal is.

A poster on WaPo suggested that the delegates be split 50-50 and seated.

That sounds reasonable. Otherwise, the results should be voided.

What's so difficult about that?

Great Idea!

Well, I'm in Florida and we're going to fight to seat our delegates.

Over 1-million Democrats voted in the Florida primary -- that's more than double than Dem primary voters in 2004.

A record turnout. All the candidates names were on the ballot and Obama came in second, Edwards came in third.

You can't argue that "no one knew Obama in FL" if he beat Edwards.

Howard Dean is a screw-up.

He we go again: We want a Re-count! Election Fraud! Independants not allowed fo voice their opinions! Republicans at Fault! Bush-Cheney Kabal did This! Karl Rove destroys integrity of the Democrats! Bush Ballot Boxes Boff Election! More Indents than before! Chad is back and it's He's not looking for Hillary! Hillary's de-cries election Results as Misleading and wants old results back!
OBAMA DEMANDS HIS NAME PLACED POSTHUMOUSLY ON MICHIGAN VOTE!! Barak demands "Put my name on .....What state did i miss???....Oh yeah Michigan and let's ROLL!!

Is he a Clinton supporter?

Unfortunately, Sen. Levin's opinion does not matter if the Michigan GOVERNOR decides to hold a do over. He needs to play his role and represent his state in Congress.

How in da hell can you argue in democracy to not award delegates to a candidate that wasn't even on the ballot and the people never got to hear from??? I do agree that lily white Iowa & NH shouldn't hold so much sway, but they had 4 years to fix that before now.
