McCain Loses Cool With NYT Reporter

McCain Loses Cool With NYT Reporter

AP   |  Libby Quaid   |   March 7, 2008 01:11 PM

NEW ORLEANS -- Republican Sen. John McCain, showing a flash of the temper he is known for, repeatedly cut off a reporter Friday when asked whether he had spoken to Democratic Sen. John Kerry about being his vice president in 2004.

"Everybody knows that I had a private conversation. Everybody knows that, that I had a conversation," McCain told the reporter. "And you know it, too. No. You know it, too. No. You do know. You do know."

The reporter, Elisabeth Bumiller of The New York Times, was following up on a question McCain had answered at a campaign event Friday morning in Atlanta. Asked if he might consider Kerry as a running mate, since Kerry asked him in 2004, McCain said no.

Afterward, on a campaign flight, Bumiller said she looked in the Times' archives and that McCain had denied talking with Kerry in a May 2004 story.

McCain interrupted, saying that everyone knew he had a private conversation, and he kept interrupting as she tried to follow up. McCain clearly was irate.

"I don't know what you read or heard of, and I don't know the circumstances," McCain said. "Maybe in May of '04 I hadn't had a conversation."

Did he recall the conversation? "I don't know, but it's well-known that I had the conversation. It's absolutely well-known by everyone. So do you have a question on another issue?"

Asked again about the conversation, McCain said, "No. No. Because the issue is closed, as far as I'm concerned. Everybody knows it. Everybody knows it in America."

Could he describe the conversation? "No, of course not," McCain said. "I don't describe private conversations. Why should I? Then there's no such thing as a private conversation."

McCain is known for having a temper and has been dubbed "Senator Hothead" by more than one publication.

Losing his cool? Have you heard little johnny speak, my friends? Have you seen his slick, two handed style of holding the microphone, my friend? Have you heard him say "My friend," my friend? He could never lose his cool.

i so respect sen john mccain for the sacrifice that he has endured for the good of the freedom that the citizens of this country enjoy! that being said, i do not feel the need to vote for him as the president of the united states of america, for many reasons and on many levels. this show of anger being one of them. the man has age, pow syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder, as well as an extensive history of unrest with his own party!
my respect for a military man does not cloud my vision of the qualities that our next leadership MUST possess do to the fact that we are in dire straits! we are in grave danger of destroying our own great foundation...and in the process loosing the faith and support of the good citizens of america! we don't have time in our favor here...what with this very expensive war to tackle, and the economy...makes the other issues seem pale due to the urgency, we must look at the vision of the future of our children etc., and get serious about the environment..our addiction to oil, our foreign policy....electing the oldest president in our history is not giving america the best possible scenario we possibly can for these 21st century issues! we deserve barack obama! and anyone who wants to join forces with the politics of the future...not more of the same in any way!
peace

Vietnam was never a threat to our freedom, just like Iraq is no threat to our freedom. The GOP are more of a threat to our freedom than any dictator or rougue state.

Evan Thomas of Newsweek had an interesting prospective in relation to the 3am Clinton campaign ad, although the premise of the ad is not credible in a post Cold War scenario, since the president would have to be briefed by the Joint Chiefs in order to mobilize the military before any conventional action could be taken. Evan Thomas"s observation was that Obama the target of the ad never seems to react to the stress of campaigning and the political attacks by losing his cool, isn"t that the type pf person you want answer the call?

McCain clearly over reacted to a question, he could have simply answered directly without it being broadcast all over the media. He did speak with Kerry and he didn"t change parties to run as his VP, period. Both men have been friends for many years, McCain was so concerned that the wing-nut base might find out that he actually speaks to a Democrat and fellow veteran, that he over reacted to drive his point home appareling agitated in the process. Elisabeth Bumiller, did not write the lobbyist story and did not deserve to be the subject of McCain ire. MaCain showed a volatile temper that Military officers and his own Republican colleagues have voiced concern in the past as to his fitness to be Commander and Chief. McCain was not a victim of the press or an unfair question; he is a victim of his own temper and came off as a grumpy old man who missed his chill pill. Elisabeth Bumiller was so taken a back by his over reaction she asked him why the angry response? McCain once again became inpatient and asked what, she said forget it.

Actually, the man is a bit stern with the questioner. It is a meek attempt at confrontation from the reporter as it is. Looking like the NYT sends out an amateur to do a pro's job; that or the entire newsroom at the NYT is so devoid of actual fact-finding talent they simply don't know the art of leading-questioning.

HINT: look at the press conferences in Europe (Britain if you must) and listen to how the politicians are not taken at their every word. Then you must prepare to ask questions for which you already prepared follow-ups.

I know, I know: that takes a sense of professionalism and the commitment of the editorial staff unknown at the NYT.

In sum, the video has all the flavor of those bland sting videos students try to deliver against their substitute teachers. I need a bath.

I'm not a big fan of McCain, but I think that was a great way to handle it. That "reported" felt so badly scolded that all she could whimper after McCain was through with her was "Why are so so angry?" I'd like to see Obama or Hillary pull that off without looking whiney.

General awesomemess overall.

McCain's campaign and candidacy are completely about ego. He is ONLY interested in becoming Commander-in-Chief, thus ascending to the top of the heap as far as his family history is concerned. He doesn't appear to be particularly interested in helping the American people, or changing anything other than "protecting" them from exaggerated threats and handing over the responsbibility for the rest of it to a group of trusted advisors who, surprise, appear more and more to be either Bush's advisors or lobbyists. It also appears that he loves flattery and attention, particularly when it is directed to his much ballyooed integrity and independence -- not the least trumpeted by the candidate himself with a huge dose of false humility. Yes, again, he would probably be a really interesting guy to have a beer with but it seems even some generals are a bit worried about him running the country. Are we really going to do this again?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:09 PM on 03/08/2008

Just what we need, a hothead running the country. You would think after Bush we would learn that charecter has more to do with the job then what a candidate says. GW made many promises but he certainly did not promise doubling the national debt, waging a war that will never end, nor having a faltering economy. He said mostly the opposite and look where we are, words are cheap, actions speak louder and McCain losing his McCool is not a good thing for a president, what happens if he is negotiating a peace accord, and loses his cool, oh wait never mind, he would not negotiate he would kill em all rather then talk, war is so much more fun then talking.

If this is the best the GOP can do...there is no hope for them.....this is a walking dead man.....

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:22 PM on 03/08/2008

McCain probably suffers, still, from PTSD. He's not very stable and certainly not one you would want even walking by the red phone, much less answering it. McCain is not credible on anything. I absolutely give him credit for serving his country. And I believe that he suffered terribly as a captive. I fail to understand why it is that he is not now adamently opposed to torture in any sense. I've heard that some people have said if Obama is not nominated, they'll vote for McCain. Now how scary is that? Are those people saying that Obama is more like McCain...no, I really don't think so, but does anyone understand their logic?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:51 PM on 03/08/2008

REPUBLICANS used to say "We are the Party of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan"

We don't hear that anymore, do we?

What I do remember about Reagan is the countless times he said "I don't recall"
Sen. McCain must think that old worn out mantra still works. guess what? It does not.

Regans Vice President, George Herbert Walker Bush, during that same time said (under oath) "I was out of the loop" ......Iran-Contra.

It appears that Sen. McCain is both forgetful AND out of the loop.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:45 PM on 03/08/2008

Actually he does not show much temper here!! Come on!!! What he does do is avoid a topic because it is in the past yet he will run on his experience. if the past is not open to discussion he should to be consistent not run on his past nor on anything which was private at the time.
Eliminates most of what he is going to run on.

During the heat of an election year, it's so tempting to turn on the television, or radio, and listen to what other people think. What is even harder is to think for yourself.

Consider this: McCain spent five years in a POW camp. If the terror of war can result in post traumatic stress syndrom, what does five years in a POW camp do to the mind? This outburst of anger toward someone questioning his denial of the truth should get some of us questioning just how stable is this guy?

McCain was born into a military family, believes the only way to solve a problem is through the use of military force. We now find ourselves in the fifth year of the biggest failed foreign policy blunder in years with McCain telling us it could go on for another 100 years. He has assured us of many more wars while advocating tax cuts. How will he pay for all this military spending?

Anyone who is a conservative should ask themselves whether or not McCain will live up to the values of conservatism.

Dear all you "This is a NON-STORY!!!" McCain apologists:

Oh. It's a STORY, all right. Just not the one you think it is.

Here is a helpful hint: whenever someone is about to out you for some trangression or lie, the best defense is a good offense. "Righteous indignation" works spiffily, because most human beings (especially in Amurca) are trained from birth to back down at the assertion of Authority, even if that assertion is pure bullshit.

McCain, the War Hero [tm] and Straight Talker [tm], is uncannily good with this. He can make a reporter feel as if she or he just walked into High Mass, and peed on the altar (see also: Cheney and Tim Russert. When Timmeh asks an Inappropriate Question, this cocksucker has it down to where he doesn't have to say a word; he just GLARES, and the interviewer apologizes and wets himself... not necessarily in that order!).

To get down to brass tacks, here, folks:

MCCAIN WAS LYING THROUGH HIS ASS TO ELIZABETH BUMILLER. In case you didn't see it, it turns out his Outraged act about the Kerry camp coming to him about the vice-presidential slot, was pure 100% USDA-certified bullshit. HIS people went to KERRY... NOT the other way around. His "temper" thingy was a DISTRACTION. You losers fell for it beautifully.

Do me a favor, wingnuts? Start developing a capacity for skepticism and critical thinking? Please? Your willingness to follow any glib, lying demagagoue has really screwed this country good. and will continue to do so, as long as they keep allowing you dimbulbs to vote (if it were up to me, I wouldn't even allow you to own an OPINION, until you could prove that you actually KNEW SOMETHING!!).

How would you like this guy to answer the phone at 3:00 AM, Mr. Diplomacy? Mr. McCain is more like the Vice Principal archetype from your old high school - the one who does the punishing because the Principal has to remain dignified and unhated. "This will hurt me more than it will hurt you " could be John McCain's campaign slogan - he has promised to continue with the Republican policies into the unforseen future. His slogan could also be: "IF IT IS BROKE, DON'T FIX IT". Yes, this is his real message!!!

I hope the Democratic party will get it together very soon. It is clear the Republicans will be doing everything in their power to prolong the battle between Obama and Hillary. It is very transparent that they want to compete against Hillary and Bill in November, have no doubt. They will drain the Democratic party of its capital, enthusiasm, inspiration, and hope. It is their only hope for survival!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:36 PM on 03/08/2008

that's not that bad. hardly a temper-explosion like the headline would suggest, he is definitely getting a little short with the reporter, but look at what these guys have to endure. the reporter did get scared after she asked why he was so angry, "excuse me???" mccain starts... "nevermind, nevermind..." ducking away. haha.

McBomb says that he knew that Iraq war was not going to be easy.

"He "claimed that he knew the Iraq war was "probably going to be long and hard and tough," and that he was "sorry" for those who voted for the war believing it would be "some kind of an easy task." "Maybe they didn"t know what they were voting for," McCain said."

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/01/04/mccain-iraq-easy/

Now let"s review what he said in 2002 and 2003:

"Because I know that as successful as I believe we will be, and I believe that the success will be fairly easy, we will still lose some American young men or women." [CNN, 9/24/02]

"We"re not going to get into house-to-house fighting in Baghdad. We may have to take out buildings, but we"re not going to have a bloodletting of trading American bodies for Iraqi bodies." [CNN, 9/29/02]

"But the point is that, one, we will win this conflict. We will win it easily." [MSNBC, 1/22/03]

McBomb is congenital liar, in the same league as Bush and Cheney, possibly worse.

At least now we know that Kerry & McCain were talking in 2004.

Does this mean Kerry has first dibs as McCains' VP? It must!

Does this mean that McCain is such an angry hothead that he

shouldn't be President. Probably not, and probably he will be anyway.

'It's all about National Security, you idiots!'
