Officials: Letters Not Linked to NY Bomb

WASHINGTON — There's apparently no link between the bombing of a military recruiting station in New York's Times Square and letters sent to Congress saying "We Did It," law enforcement officials said Friday.

The lengthy anti-war letters _ which arrived with photos of a man standing in front of the recruiting office before it was damaged _ contained no threats and were sent to as many as 100 members of Congress, officials said.

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles, said an individual was questioned there about the letters to Congress and "there is no evidence linking the letters, which contained no threat, to the bombing."

A law enforcement official in Washington, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation of the bombing was continuing, called the timing of the letters an "incredibly unbelievable coincidence" and said no charges were expected in connection with them.

Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill were startled to receive the letters in their office mail Thursday afternoon, just hours after the early morning New York bombing, and turned them over to the Capitol Police.

One law enforcement official said the "We Did It" referred to the Democratic wins. The Democrats gained control of Congress in 2006.

"It looked like a holiday card," Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., said Friday. He described a photograph of a white man who appeared to be in his 30s or 40s, standing in front of the Times Square office before it was damaged, with the words, "We Did It" and "Happy New Year" printed below the photo.

Capitol Police, FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service were investigating.

In an e-mail to lawmakers, Capitol Police said the envelopes went through the standard security process. That process, which involves radiating incoming mail, can easily take a week or more, making it likely the letters were mailed well ahead of the bombing.

The small bomb caused minor damage to the New York military recruiting station before dawn Thursday and police were searching for a hooded bicyclist seen on a surveillance video pedaling away.

I looked up cpusa.org, did a site search, and all I could find was three references to FARC, each one enforcing how to push forward a peace process between FARC and Colombia. You strike me as a petty fearmongerer.

It sounds like you think a peace group should just keep its mouth shut, as if the only way to be a pacifist is to be completely apolitical. Tibetan monks are pacifists and they are political separatists. That quaker who lit himself on fire in front of the White House to protest the Viet Nam war -- another pacifist who you would probably label pro-Communist and pro-war.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was not only against the Viet Nam war, he spoke out on behalf of the Vietnamese people. Guess that makes him another pro-war pacifist hypocrite?

I suppose Gandhi was pro-fascist and pro-war because he organized revolt against Great Britain when they were fighting the Nazis, too?

Anyway, it is weird that a guy stands in front of a building later to be blown up and the words "We Did It" are sent to Democratic Congresspeople at the same time. Very, very weird.

Google Code Pink "We Did It." The Communist Party USA and many of their front groups from their United for Peace and Justice coalition like Code Pink, Grannies for Peace, Grey Panthers, protest at military recruitments centers, when recruiters enter public schools and universities, and just recently at Berkeley.

Then you have a letter to Congresspersons that says "We Did It" but they say it concerns the Democrats victory in 2006 which was over a year ago?

The letter states some type of "manifesto" about the Iraq war?

In my research of "peace" groups, they support many warring factions including Hamas. Hezbollah, and the Zapatistas. They're now proclaiming that FARC is a legitimate "people's revolution."

Isn't a "peace" person like a referee and by their very title THEY CALL FOULS ON ALL SIDES? NO WAR OR WARRING FACTION IS LEGITIMATE TO A PEACE PERSON but our peace groups will justify these killers. If you support any warring faction, you should not be in a peace group! If you are already in one, question your leaders and learn of their connection to the Communist Party USA. It's easy: Google the name of their group and add Communist Party USA. Go to cpusa.org and pww.org and see how many warring factions these groups legitimize!

Oh man, the 60 libs are long gone...all we have now is a bunch of leftist kids that have no idea or insight as to what their protesting¦.

Moreover, the far left has become as radical and violent as any terrorist group...check out the "Environmental Liberation Front." I guess, if you can't subvert the constitution with freak judges, just start setting off explosives...lol...

One other thing, there many be "no link"¦lol¦ between these letter and the bombing but the folks that sent the letter are celebrating this incident. Anyone remember the Palestinians dancing in the streets on 911...they had nothing to do with the attack but they were happy it occurred.

Nice hasty generalization. Not all "peace" groups as you call them are the same. It is unfair of you to peg everyone who truly wants peace with groups that support terrorist groups.

Concerning the letters sent to Congress, I find it impossible to believe that someone would send harmless letters to members of Congress saying "We did it" to arrive the same day that the bombing in Times Square was done. Even if "We did it" did refer to Democratic victories in 2006, those letters are a year and a half too late. The "official" reason stating that the letters to Congress are unrelated to the Time Square bombing doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Is it any reason why so many people don't trust the government anymore?

I just hope that they catch whoever did the bombing. As much as I dislike what the current administration has done by going to war with Iraq, people need to act within the laws of this country. Otherwise they are no better than Bush, who routinely acts outside the laws.

I used to know someone who claimed that, after he was abruptly discarged from the Navy, made a special point of returning to his local neighborhood and pouring sugar into the gas tank of his Navy recruiter. If you want to find the culprit there's an even chance he/she had been recruited for service out of that office and recently returned from 16 months hard duty in Iraq.

The idea that those letters are a coincidence flies in the face of common sense and rational thought. CNN reported that the rationale behind the letters was to take credit for the 2006 elections. Delivered a year and a half later? CNN also reported a possible connection with people stopped a month ago at the Canadian border. They had documents linking them to the times square location. Another coincidence?

Interesting, when the anti-Iraq war note was thought to be connected to the bombing incident, the comments were closed. Now that the note is not, comments are open. Why would that be?
