"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough appeared on "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday and explained the culture of fear that permeates the news business during this election season.

"There are all these minefields out there for Barack Obama that I think the press has been tiptoeing through," Scarborough said. He continued, "If you attack Hillary Clinton, we have found, there are organizations out there that will bombard your sponsors, that will call the president of your network and will say, 'Get that person off the air.' Media people are living in fear."

Scarborough challenged both fellow guest Farai Chideya (NPR) and members of the audience who disagreed with him, saying, "Everybody clapping in the audience obviously hasn't worked at netowkrs during this campaign, where people take them in the back and say, 'You've gotta be very careful now. If you attack Hillary Clinton too much we're going to be called sexist. And if you attack Barack Obama too much, we're going to be called racist.'"

Watch:

Scarborough's network, MSNBC, has come under fire from the Clinton campaign for what it perceived as sexist remarks by hosts David Shuster and Chris Matthews.

If anyone in the media, or any media, haven't the balls to tell anyone to piss-off, then they deserve what they get. If all you are ot for is ratings and sponsership, then you do not belong in the first place. I don't care what a campaign or administration threatens; reveal it, and tell them to go fuck them selves. You people aren't news reporters anymore, yo're talking heads, with nothing to say, self agrandizing, egotistical butt-wipes, who would be dipping chicken tenders and fries if it weren't for the cable TV. Noone reports anymore, they expound their own beliefs and bigotries. I don't give one tenth of one monkey crap WHAT YOU THINK. Give the unvarnished NEWS. I'll make up my own goddamned mind, thank you.

MSNBC tried to rehabilitate Chris Matthews using all of their on-air "talent" and it backfired big-time. Instead of rehabilitating Matthews the tactic has revealed the bias running through all of MSNBC's programs and staff. Enter Rachel -- another MSNBC attempt to clean up the sexism. Joe's afraid for his JOB and he should be. Where was his fear of media bias or censorship during the run up to the war?

I think the media should be afraid, they have let everyone down by giving Bush a pass.
He is starting to see the day of reckoning....good.
Hey Joe, people starting to yell at you in the street?

This is a classic example of faux balance. Scarborough couples his real frustration about false claims of sexism with his feigned frustration about supposed false claims of racism.

Joe is so right.

Rhetoric used by many groups along with the politically correct police are running rampant again. The media must to be able to freely discuss issues like voter behavior of different groups on the facts, including ethnicity and gender, without constant fear of being attacked.

Correct. Without it you do not have an open, Free Press, protected under the First Amendment. Without critical discussions of analysis being tallied in any campaign you don't do the country a favor and you keep them blinded to their own flaws, if they are shown.

I'm as liberal as anyone here, but I just don't understand the vitriol for Scarborough. He's a Republican that is workable. He's not fallen too far into the abyss that is yee-haw right-wing douchebaggery. Sometimes he actually makes sense, unlike many of his right-wing colleagues, so I don't understand the hate on this board for the man (ditto for Tucker - he's actually made the case quite a few times for getting out of Iraq and for our personal freedoms).

C'mon people! Joe is just an average Joe in the GOP. I it wasn't for fear, what would the GOP live for? Well, besides hate..,

Good, people like YOU should be scared for their jobs. If you keep your mouth flapping with all those nasty comments about everyone that doesn't think like you. Hope people like YOU do lose their jobs for someone more competent and that has actual facts then your made up facts. When you go JOE the world and media will be a better place. You are overpaid for the vile that you put on our air waves.

What a revelation. And I thought media people were living in fear because their opinions are bought and sold to corporate fascist, complicit election fixing handlers and We The People are fed up with the spin.

Scarborough is obviously of the 'ilk' that the viewer is deaf dumb and blind, to the outrageous media bias against Hillary.

it's high time they were called on the carpet for it... and high time these ridiculous - pretend pundits- were obligated to start behaving ethically and honestly while covering this election, or any election for that matter.

To wail: they have to tiptoe through minefields... when covering Obama - is once again another smear against Hillary, they think the public is too stupid to get!

Is vetting Obama - tiptoeing through mine fields? Is that what they are saying? What is it exactly they are saying? That it's just fine and dandy to rake Hillary over the coals... so much so.. it's created a public uproar and backlash, for God's sake!

But they are still bleating ... the same bullshit - about poor Obama.. and still refusing to vet him!

Why not? Why is Obama not subjected to the same scrutiny Hillary has been subjected to by the media?

Is he not man enough? For sure the 'pretend' media doesn't have the balls.

I'm glad to hear someone finally say this outloud. I think that with the internet, youtube, and the other sources out there, every single word of every single surrogate and media person is under the microscope. What might not even have gotten out of it's intended original audience even 4-8 years ago, is now blared across the internet, shot around the world on youtube, with feedback comments on forumus just like this one. I'm not sure that is a good thing in the least. The pressure that both campaigns must be under is enormous, same with the media.

After living in this society as a white male for more than 60 years, I am certain that I have unconsciously absorbed a good deal of racism and sexism. My task is to make that conscious and reject those corrosive influences on clear thinking before I speak. It is not that my intention is malign, but that patterns of thought and assumptions absorbed from an unjust society and culture may shape my thoughts unconsciously. For media people to feel some fear that their prejudices and faults of logic and evidence should be exposed is not such a bad thing. And criticism of their unconscious racist or sexist assumptions and thinking are fair game -- and potentially a healing discussion.
On the other hand, as Saul Bellow said once, suffering is not necessarily ennobling. People in classes that have been held down and oppressed are not exempt from the requirement for clear thinking and critical examination of their own prejudices.
What's most malign, and most difficult to determine, is when people consciously play on the prejudices of others to gain a political advantage. Was Bill Clinton consciously playing the race card when he dismissed the significance of Senator Obama's victory in South Carolina or was he simply operating with unconscious racist assumptions? Was Geralidine Ferraro positioning for her candidate when she declared that Obama was 'lucky to be black' or was she just massively ignorant? Was the MSNBC reporter who spoke of the Clinton's 'pimping Chelsea' just insensitive to the historical oppression of women or using that expression to pump up his image as a commentator?
It is difficult to read what is in someone's heart. But news media that promote ratings based on 'controversy' rather than fact based debate, and a campaign whose motto is 'whatever it takes' are suspect. There is a great deal to be said for civility and self-reflection before speech.

Sad statement on the 1st Amendment! If you have HBO you MUST see the best show of the season! Besides Joe being on point about the media, Goldberg gave a perfect analysis of HRC!! Sad state of affairs!
