Scarborough:

Scarborough: "Media People Are Living In Fear" This Election Season

Huffington Post   |   March 10, 2008 12:56 PM

"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough appeared on "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday and explained the culture of fear that permeates the news business during this election season.

"There are all these minefields out there for Barack Obama that I think the press has been tiptoeing through," Scarborough said. He continued, "If you attack Hillary Clinton, we have found, there are organizations out there that will bombard your sponsors, that will call the president of your network and will say, 'Get that person off the air.' Media people are living in fear."

Scarborough challenged both fellow guest Farai Chideya (NPR) and members of the audience who disagreed with him, saying, "Everybody clapping in the audience obviously hasn't worked at netowkrs during this campaign, where people take them in the back and say, 'You've gotta be very careful now. If you attack Hillary Clinton too much we're going to be called sexist. And if you attack Barack Obama too much, we're going to be called racist.'"

Watch:

Scarborough's network, MSNBC, has come under fire from the Clinton campaign for what it perceived as sexist remarks by hosts David Shuster and Chris Matthews.

If anyone in the media, or any media, haven't the balls to tell anyone to piss-off, then they deserve what they get. If all you are ot for is ratings and sponsership, then you do not belong in the first place. I don't care what a campaign or administration threatens; reveal it, and tell them to go fuck them selves. You people aren't news reporters anymore, yo're talking heads, with nothing to say, self agrandizing, egotistical butt-wipes, who would be dipping chicken tenders and fries if it weren't for the cable TV. Noone reports anymore, they expound their own beliefs and bigotries. I don't give one tenth of one monkey crap WHAT YOU THINK. Give the unvarnished NEWS. I'll make up my own goddamned mind, thank you.

We tried to warn you Liberals about Political Correctness.........

MSNBC tried to rehabilitate Chris Matthews using all of their on-air "talent" and it backfired big-time. Instead of rehabilitating Matthews the tactic has revealed the bias running through all of MSNBC's programs and staff. Enter Rachel -- another MSNBC attempt to clean up the sexism. Joe's afraid for his JOB and he should be. Where was his fear of media bias or censorship during the run up to the war?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:37 AM on 03/12/2008

Poor Joe, What comes around goes around.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:52 PM on 03/11/2008

I think the media should be afraid, they have let everyone down by giving Bush a pass.
He is starting to see the day of reckoning....good.
Hey Joe, people starting to yell at you in the street?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:38 PM on 03/11/2008

This is a classic example of faux balance. Scarborough couples his real frustration about false claims of sexism with his feigned frustration about supposed false claims of racism.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:10 PM on 03/11/2008

Joe is so right.

Rhetoric used by many groups along with the politically correct police are running rampant again. The media must to be able to freely discuss issues like voter behavior of different groups on the facts, including ethnicity and gender, without constant fear of being attacked.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:42 PM on 03/11/2008

Correct. Without it you do not have an open, Free Press, protected under the First Amendment. Without critical discussions of analysis being tallied in any campaign you don't do the country a favor and you keep them blinded to their own flaws, if they are shown.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:16 PM on 03/12/2008

THIS GUY IS A RACIST!!!

YES I SAID IT JOE IS RACIST ONCE AGAIN!!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:36 AM on 03/12/2008

I'm as liberal as anyone here, but I just don't understand the vitriol for Scarborough. He's a Republican that is workable. He's not fallen too far into the abyss that is yee-haw right-wing douchebaggery. Sometimes he actually makes sense, unlike many of his right-wing colleagues, so I don't understand the hate on this board for the man (ditto for Tucker - he's actually made the case quite a few times for getting out of Iraq and for our personal freedoms).

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:30 PM on 03/11/2008

C'mon people! Joe is just an average Joe in the GOP. I it wasn't for fear, what would the GOP live for? Well, besides hate..,

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:06 PM on 03/11/2008

Right on... you are right.. fear and hate.. that's the Republican message now.. oh.. don't forget HOPE.. I mean the lack of...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:05 PM on 03/11/2008

Good, people like YOU should be scared for their jobs. If you keep your mouth flapping with all those nasty comments about everyone that doesn't think like you. Hope people like YOU do lose their jobs for someone more competent and that has actual facts then your made up facts. When you go JOE the world and media will be a better place. You are overpaid for the vile that you put on our air waves.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:43 AM on 03/11/2008

What a revelation. And I thought media people were living in fear because their opinions are bought and sold to corporate fascist, complicit election fixing handlers and We The People are fed up with the spin.

Scarborough is obviously of the 'ilk' that the viewer is deaf dumb and blind, to the outrageous media bias against Hillary.

it's high time they were called on the carpet for it... and high time these ridiculous - pretend pundits- were obligated to start behaving ethically and honestly while covering this election, or any election for that matter.

To wail: they have to tiptoe through minefields... when covering Obama - is once again another smear against Hillary, they think the public is too stupid to get!

Is vetting Obama - tiptoeing through mine fields? Is that what they are saying? What is it exactly they are saying? That it's just fine and dandy to rake Hillary over the coals... so much so.. it's created a public uproar and backlash, for God's sake!

But they are still bleating ... the same bullshit - about poor Obama.. and still refusing to vet him!

Why not? Why is Obama not subjected to the same scrutiny Hillary has been subjected to by the media?

Is he not man enough? For sure the 'pretend' media doesn't have the balls.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 AM on 03/11/2008

yes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:54 AM on 03/11/2008

you mean ditto.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:37 PM on 03/11/2008

I'm glad to hear someone finally say this outloud. I think that with the internet, youtube, and the other sources out there, every single word of every single surrogate and media person is under the microscope. What might not even have gotten out of it's intended original audience even 4-8 years ago, is now blared across the internet, shot around the world on youtube, with feedback comments on forumus just like this one. I'm not sure that is a good thing in the least. The pressure that both campaigns must be under is enormous, same with the media.

After living in this society as a white male for more than 60 years, I am certain that I have unconsciously absorbed a good deal of racism and sexism. My task is to make that conscious and reject those corrosive influences on clear thinking before I speak. It is not that my intention is malign, but that patterns of thought and assumptions absorbed from an unjust society and culture may shape my thoughts unconsciously. For media people to feel some fear that their prejudices and faults of logic and evidence should be exposed is not such a bad thing. And criticism of their unconscious racist or sexist assumptions and thinking are fair game -- and potentially a healing discussion.
On the other hand, as Saul Bellow said once, suffering is not necessarily ennobling. People in classes that have been held down and oppressed are not exempt from the requirement for clear thinking and critical examination of their own prejudices.
What's most malign, and most difficult to determine, is when people consciously play on the prejudices of others to gain a political advantage. Was Bill Clinton consciously playing the race card when he dismissed the significance of Senator Obama's victory in South Carolina or was he simply operating with unconscious racist assumptions? Was Geralidine Ferraro positioning for her candidate when she declared that Obama was 'lucky to be black' or was she just massively ignorant? Was the MSNBC reporter who spoke of the Clinton's 'pimping Chelsea' just insensitive to the historical oppression of women or using that expression to pump up his image as a commentator?
It is difficult to read what is in someone's heart. But news media that promote ratings based on 'controversy' rather than fact based debate, and a campaign whose motto is 'whatever it takes' are suspect. There is a great deal to be said for civility and self-reflection before speech.

Sad statement on the 1st Amendment! If you have HBO you MUST see the best show of the season! Besides Joe being on point about the media, Goldberg gave a perfect analysis of HRC!! Sad state of affairs!

Mr Scarborough ,

You guys stopped being journalists a long time ago. You are not even reporters.

You are being paid to entertain us-and there has been a concerted attempt on the part of the corporate owned, consolidated mass media to dumb us down-keep us stupid and keep us entertained so that i doesnt hurt as much while our reasoning abilties we are stripped away.

When the debates first began, I was horrified at the questions that were being asked of the candidates but I was more horrified of what was not being asked. Thank goodness for independent journalists. They kept us informed. You guys F A I L E D U S...
I was horrified at how John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich Hillary Clinton, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Ralph Nader have been treated by our consolidated media companies. These honorable public servants were treated like subhumans. Now, I have some unanswered questions-for Sen Obama. Questions that should have been asked & answered from day 1. You think you might get chance to ask him for us ?

1- Sen. Obama"s past voting record:
http://www.beyondchron.org/articles/The_Obama_Craze_Count_Me_Out_5413.html
Damning article on how much Sen Obama REALLY cares about the voters and their issues-and- just how good was his legislation for the people? I'd Like Sen Obama to refute

2- His choice of firm to manage his campaign-firm that specializes in helping black candidates use race baiting to win elections:

The New Republic, "Race Man" by Sean Wilentz.
WHY DID HE FEEL THE NEED TO DO THIS? WHAT STRATEGIES DID HE USE TO 'RACE BAIT"?

********************************************************************
3- His choice of Zbigniew Brzezinski (person who at one time some have accused of being a war monger, who has written books on why the US should seek control of Iran if US wants to maintain its global primacy in Euroasia.

All the talking heads on MSNBC knew that Barack Obama was off limits from the start but the Clintons were "fair game" as Karl Rove said of Valerie Plame Wilson when her husband Joe Wilson crossed the Bush administration.

This group of Swiftboaters had been after Hillary Clinton for years. They were just jumping on the bandwagon until Mathews and Schuster crossed the line and were called on it.

Here is proof of what is behind the Hate Hillary craze that is going on in this Country and some people feed on it like predators.

for --

You severely underestimate the public's contempt for the egomaniacal Clintons. It's not just the Republicans anymore -- there are many, many people, Dems & Independents alike, who detest and abhore the Clintons.

You will, too, one day. You've been played by a very talented pair of scam artists -- Bill and Hillary -- who are determined to get what they feel is rightly theirs' -- back in the WH -- AND back in the media spotlight. They will do whatever it takes to satisfy their selfish whims, too -- even to the point of tearing the Democratic Party apart over race and gender.

They don't care -- it's the ends that justifies the means. Sound familiar? Bush and Cheney. Karl Rove. More of the same. More of the past.

That's why people are turned off to the Clintons. They have no morals.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:50 AM on 03/11/2008

joja,
how do you know all that about the Clintons? Do you know them personally or did you hear it from other people? If you don't know them how can you hate them? What have they done to you personally? How do you know what you were told or read is true? Do you know the sources of your info?

Bill Clinton was not a perfect president but did he harm the nation the way Bush and the Republicans have done?

When he turned over the key to Bush the house was in order, now it is a mess.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:42 AM on 03/11/2008

Petty jealousies. It's simple, "Divide and Conquor", that's how Bush, Rove and all repubs function. It worked against Dems in 1988, 2000, 2004 and now it's working inside the Democratic Party.

Wake up.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:57 AM on 03/11/2008

Based on the number of times I've heard people (people I respect, people I am "a Fan of", and people who are my fans) portray the ridiculous story about Hillary Clinton and the cattle futures as a BIG SCANDAL (when in fact it was a $1,000 investment that netted HRC $100,000 over TWELVE YEARS!), I can't help thinking we've not only swallowed the Republican lies hook, line and sinker but we actually enjoy it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:15 AM on 03/11/2008

The Clintons left office with some of the highest ratings of any President in history. Starr spent 5 years and 60M to fund a broad and deep with hunt of everything wrong with the Clintons and only found the Monica issue, which was even not in the special investigators justification. This issue and all the rest were simply ginned up rumor and innuendo used by the Republicans to attack Clinton. All were unproven.
I have made 10x my money in one day leveraging futures. Any trader knows this.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:49 PM on 03/11/2008

i made 15k trading currency last week. it's not uncommon at all. and buying cattle futures options, like she did is not illegal. she should be thought of as smart for taking that risk and for even understanding what she was doing. and the hate that's out there for them is completely ridiculous. i have never seen a political organization as manipulative and malign as bush/cheney, and yet all i read on this site is how the clintons are worse then them. you'd think that they were guilty of making billions of dollars off of the war in iraq. they're not perfect for sure, but they're better than the alternatives. i swear that the posts here are rw plants sometimes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:05 PM on 03/11/2008

Yeah that link goes to a committee formed in 2006 to stop Hillary's Senate bid against Jeanine Periro. You might want to find something more recent if you're so worried about this "Hillary Hate craze."

Don't know where you've been but a) 2006 was two years ago and b) it cannot be part of this new craze you talk about if it was formed almost 2 years ago. Also don't know what any of that has to do with Oblerman, Shuster or Matthews but okay. I think they're kind of two separate things.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:26 AM on 03/11/2008

yea and we all know what a peach jeanine pirro was...or do you not care to do any research - that woman was pure evil and her husband was facing serious time for serious tax fraud. oh but she must be better than hillary because hillary's husband got a hummer in the oval office, right? pirro lost because she was totally inept and had zero chance of winning. i really think that there's something wrong. i think the hate's out there and it has a life of it's own, and zero to do with reality. you hate her because you've been told to hate her since 1993 and for no bloody good reason, other than the fact that she's a smart woman who can play better than the boys.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:09 PM on 03/11/2008

You guys whine too much. These are commentary shows. The opinions of the hosts are going to come through. I can watch these shows without letting them shape my opinion. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't, as long as the show overall is somewhat balanced. They don't have an obligation to be down the middle. If it annoys you don't watch.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:18 AM on 03/11/2008

Well kburlz he said he''s living in fear. That's not whining that's his statement. My response is to show him how other people in the media clearly aren't living in fear of saying dumb and offensive things about both Obama and Clinton.

Possibly then he will consider coming out of his closet, since he is apparently scared to death. I would think you would find it odder a Gulf War veteran like Joe Scarborough is living in fear based on what he thinks he can or can't say, but apparently you don't. Possibly as a grown man he should consider growing up and no longer living in fear. That would be my suggestion.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 AM on 03/11/2008

Gulf war veteran? Gulf of Mexico maybe. He and the frat boys at the University of Alabama probably had some keg wars.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:18 AM on 03/11/2008

For Joe Scarborough and those who want to say something about Obama. You mean like this from Clinton supporter Geraldine Ferraro:

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

Yeah I'd probably call you a racist then. You know why? You would be one. And exit polls showed 20 percent of people in Ohio voted against one candidate because of his race. Gosh wonder who that could be? Wake up people! There's still a lot of racism out there. If you're not part of it then great for you, but maybe what you should focus on is making sure Hillary ferrets people like this out of her campaign FIRST then we can deal with whatever imaginary issues you claim to be having.
