Spitzer? But I Don't Even Know 'Er!

Election? What election? Today since approximately 2 p.m. all anyone can think of or talk about is ELIOT FREAKING SPITZER. Reported the New York Times in a blockbuster story splashed across the top of the website: "Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation." It has since been splashed across all three cable networks pretty much non-stop (though CNN's "The Situation Room" seems to have switched back to primary politics). Let's look at how this story will play out across the media:

Politics: Will Spitzer resign? (Fox News says yes, tonight at 7 p.m.) Who will replace him? (This guy — Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, who would be New York's first African-American governor.)

Primary Politics: Spitzer is a superdelegate, and a supporter of Hillary Clinton. What will happen to his vote? (If he resigns, he'll lose it, though Paterson is also a Clinton supporter so it may have no net effect.) But also, how will Clinton react? Will it hurt her? (Portfolio's Matt Cooper says yes.) Will she support him as she supported her own husband? Or will she repudiate and reject his support? The Bill Clinton comparisons have already been made twice on MSNBC by Tucker Carlson.

Business: Eliot Spitzer is hated in the business community as the former "Sheriff of Walls Street." Cheers went up from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange when the news broke. (It's early yet, but surprisingly so far there's not much follow up other than the initial report on BusinessWeek.com and the WSJ; Portfolio, on the other hand, is all over it with a few columns and reports. On cable, CNBC clocked in first with the news at 2:07 p.m. Also, as a side note, expect a few stories about the economics of prostitution rings (apparently sound, given that it's the World's Oldest Profession).

Media: The NYO's John Koblin has already reported on how the New York Times broke the story team of reporters led by Albany reporter Danny Hakim). Now here's the NYO scooping the NYT on what its headlines are going to be tomorrow. "It's going to be a long night" wrote NYT metro editor Pete Khoury in an email to staff. No doubt to be followed up with some navel-gazing examination of how much media scrutiny is too much and what right journalists have in the bedrooms of politicians (or the secretly-reserved Washington D.C. hotel rooms, as the case may be).

Entertainment: Expect some flashbacks to famous Johns — Hugh Grant and Charlie Sheen leap to mind. To that end, expect a number of flashbacks to hooker flicks, from gritty to glam, from Klute to Leaving Las Vegas to Pretty Woman to Scandal to Mighty Aphrodite to American Gigolo. (Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments section.)

Lifestyle: Also expect some flashbacks to Famous Prostitutes and/or Johns Through History (Mata Hari was one; Ben Franklin had a penchant for the winsome services of such ladies; though Jesus never partook, Mary Magdalene will probably come up as a famous example). Also, everything you ever wanted to know about prostitution is already conveniently collected on HuffPost's living page here under "Prostitution FAQs." Also, expect Xaviera Hollander to pop up on cable before too long.

Jewish Media: Oy, such a nice Jewish boy, on his way to becoming the first Jewish President! What's this girl's name, Kristen? Sigh. To think he threw it all away for a shiksa.

Like you, I am appalled by the saturation coverage of this story.

Especially in light of the news blackout of the Democrats' stunning win in IL-14 this weekend, which is former Speaker Jabba The Hastert's old district.

That means, in the space of less than 2 years, the top two GOP leadership seats in the House have flipped to Democrats, with Bill Foster's victory being placed alongside Nick Lampson successfully winning over Tom DeLay's old seat in TX.

Now, can you imagine if the opposite had happened? If, say, Speaker Pelosi had to retire and Majority Leader Hoyer had to retire in the space of 2 years and their seats had flipped to a couple of GOPukes? Spitzer notwithstanding, we would have had wall to wall panel discussions on the corporate media networks and all the "very serious" talking head blowholes would be bloviating about what this holds for the Democrats come this fall. But, for this kind of sea change to happen in the Democrats' favor? Just listen to those crickets chirp.

The GOPuke's canary has died in their electoral coal mine and their corporate media appartchiks can't be bothered to cover it. (You can bet the donors have noticed it, tho. Watch for contributions to dry up even more for the GOPukes and House/Senate Repub retirements to increase even more.)

After all, it doesn't matter that Americans are finally waking up to the fact that the GOPukes have screwed them 8 ways to Sunday. Spitzer had S-E-X!!!! And, with a SHIKSA (as you so indelicately put it). Stop the presses! Clear the network schedules!

As for the Spitzer mess, I'm glad that this came out now. There is plenty of time for NY Democrats to run a good replacement for him between now and 2010, whether it be Lt. Gov. Patterson or, my choice, Mark Green.

This reminds me of the old Tammy Wynette song:

Stand by your John
Give him two arms to cling to
And something warm when his wife is gone
Stand by your John

Americans WANT TO PUNISH SEX BUT NOT CORRUPTION?
How stupid are we?

What are WE AMERICANS thinking?
We PUNISH SEX but DON'T PUNISH CORRUPTION.

WhY are we punishing, SEX? How stupid are we?
How can we be led by the nose by Republican panty sniffing manipulators who are IN CHARGE OF FBI, CIA WIRE TAPPING and sniffing your garbage and underwear?
How about THAT?
Why should our tax money pay for Republican bullsh*t like THAT?

WHY should Spitzer resign for sex?
Why don't Republicans RESIGN FOR CORRUPTION?

What about Republicans like Bush-Cheney & Company who LIED, started a FRAUDULENT FOR-PROFITS Iraq War, REPUBLICANS SCREWED middle-income Americans with HUGE TAX BILLS FOR DEFICIT,
& GIANT BILLS from PROFITEERING BIG OIL pals in their fake "oil shortage" that exists ONLY ON PAPER. They screwed middle-income Americans.

Why don't those Republican CORRUPTORS RESIGN?

What are we punishing here-- SEX? That is insane. How stupid are we?
WHEN WILL WE PUNISH CORRUPTION, INSTEAD?

Gee, Rachel--I imagine my post to you is looking fairly prescient to you right about now, having raised the Monica Lewinsky issue last week.

I wonder how I knew--it probably has nothing to do with the fact that I live in the same town as Spitzer.

Probably just a coincidence.

Spitzer didn't "throw it all away for a shiksa." He screwed the shiksa, paid her off, then went back home to his nice Jewish wife and nice Jewish family and pretended to be the nice Jewish boy. In any religion, that's called a cheat and a hypocrite.

"He screwed the shiksa...then went home to his nice Jewish wife..."

Actually, Silda Wall Spitzer is a Southern Baptist. So he married a nice shiksa girl before he threw it all away for a shiksa tart.

what this story did was again reinforce my opinion that male politicians are incapable of keeping their pants on. it reinforced my opinion that the larry sinclair story about obama could very well be true.

if men like spitzer are trolling for hookers, and larry craig trolls for men in bathroom stalls, and other politicians have affairs with gay interns, and place gay lovers in positions in their office, and presidents carry on affairs (and I am not just talking about clinton) then there is no reason to be suprised if Obama did engage in a drug and sex party in a limo.

why would anyone be shocked? are male politicians capable of keeping their pants ON?

vote for hillary! at least we know she wears the pants, and keeps them on. haha

O.K. I agree. No more male politicians.

Now what are we going to do with all those trolling CEOs, trolling garbage men, trolling cooks, trolling pizza delivery boys, trolling college students, trolling teachers, trolling doctors, trolling writers.......

The guy should resign. Democrats should not circle their wagons around him they need to expel him. The fact that this guy was an ethics crusader only makes his shenanigans all the more creepier and hypocritical.

'Will Spitzer resign?'

Why should he? Bill didn't. Plus, I hope he doesn't resign. I'm kinda curious to see how far Mrs. Bill Clinton is willing to go to keep that ONE superdelegate. We all know the answer since her mantra is - 'Ladies, for gain of power, check your integrity and husband's infidelity at the door.' What a role model she is to all her female supporters! Ha!

On a another note, may I make one suggestion to you, Mzzz. Sklar? Can you get rid of bolding 'key' words. Your article reads like that NY Post trash - Page Six. It totally screams 'my article can't stand on its own'. Take a lesson from Taylor Marsh and Maureen Dowd. Although I disagree on Taylor about, let's see, EVERYTHING, I have to admit she writes a titillating article that keeps my interest from beginning to end. I never have to scan the article looking for the point or something interesting to read(hint, hint). Maureen Dowd is my ultimate favorite, but I have a hunch you'll never take literary guidance from her.

Spitzer is another reckless, hubris-filled adreneline junkie like Bill Clinton is. Their narcissism far outweighs their loyalty to the people who trusted them enough to vote for them.

At least the news kept the embarrassing remarks of the dimwitted Geraldine Ferraro from dominating the front pages...the way Ferraro is repeating the smarmy nasty Steinem statement that Obama's success only proves that black trumps female? I don't know if I can explain how furious that makes me, but I'll try.

The feminism led by Steinem, the one that I honestly imagined I had subscribed to for all of these decades, kept decrying stereotyping...especially the idea that women had to behave as scheming, lying, changeable on a whim, strident, illogical, menopausal shrews in order to succeed--all of the things that Hillary is doing NOW. Hillary, with her behavior. She is virtually VALIDATING that stereotype, and setting feminism back 50 years or more.

And to carry the stereotyping problem even further, the feminists are forgetting (on purpose?) that this election isn't (or shouldn't be) about blacks as a group or women as a group and which group has an easier time, rather it is about THAT ONE MAN and THAT ONE WOMAN! It is about which one that people (if not lied to and propagandized) would choose to lead the country.

Sex scandal...with a woman? Oh, he's a Dem.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:59 AM on 03/11/2008

I don't even know what the scandal is about. He paid her something like $5,000/hour and that is a very good rate. The only person that may have been hurt was his wife and she probably knew it and was willing to accept it as long as she lived the good life. If she wasn't willing to accept it then she wouldn't have been on stage with him. I know if I did something like that, my clothes and personal stuff would be cut-up and thrown out in the driveway by the I got home. There would be no communications between her & I (maybe between the lawyers).

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:34 AM on 03/11/2008

I don't know which is funnier: that you know the going rate or that you know what will happen to you if you go for the going rate.

You are wrong about his wife being the only one hurt. He has three young daughters! Daughters who need a strong, faithful father so they can grow up with some faith in men.

Tax dollars that could have gone somewhere they belonged, but no. Iraq---waste---war on drugs---waste-----fed wiretap governor-----$$$$down the toilet while people have real problems. Who is responsible? Who will end this? Someone reign these out of hand public employees in.

Media should COVER IT'S OWN FILTHY AS* before even thinking
of covering anybody else!

We Americans are so BABYSH*T, immature and hypocritical about SEX.
Have you taken a vow of celibacy or signed up to be a monk when you
were hired for a job?

Whaaaaat? NO?? WHY NOT?? How "disappointing"!

You can bet this story would disappear mighty quick!...

Yeah, like Mayor Guiliani, who carried on with two different women while married to a third. How progressive of the media.. With Spitzer, I see it more a case of breaking a law, the Mann Act, he knew backward and forward and thinking he was immune. Anyway, he's toast, and there go New Yorkers' hopes for a reformed Albany. Paterson is already "reaching out" to Republicans.
