WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 vice presidential candidate, for suggesting that Barack Obama only achieved his status in the presidential race because he's black. In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Clinton was questioned about Ferraro's remarks.

The Obama campaign has called on the New York senator to denounce them.

Ferraro told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The newspaper published the interview last Friday.

Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters _ on both sides, because we both have this experience _ say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

"We ought to keep this on the issues. there are differences between us" on approaches to health care, energy, experience.

Ferraro is a former New York congresswoman and was Walter Mondale's running mate when he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984. She has endorsed Clinton and raised money for her campaign.

Obama called Ferraro's comments "patently absurd."

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call. "And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Ferraro should be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign because of her comments.

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

"There's no other way to send a serious signal that you want to police the tone of this campaign," he added. "And if you don't do those things then you are simply adding to the growing compendium of evidence that you really are encouraging that."

Axelrod said Clinton has encountered problems because people view her as a "divisive and polarizing force."

"The best way to address those concerns is to not allow divisiveness and negativity to flourish among your supporters," he said. "And this is an opportunity for her to address that."

Jan Schakowsky, an Obama supporter and Illinois congresswoman, said Democrats should not tear each other down, and instead focus on defeating John McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting.

"I respect every person's right to promote his or her candidate, but any and all remarks that diminish Senator Obama's candidacy because of his race are completely out of line," Schakowsky said on the conference call.

Ferraro also said Obama has it easy because of a "very sexist media."

"I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama's campaign _ to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against," she said. "For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

Last week, a former adviser to Obama resigned after calling Clinton "a monster."

Somebody needs to help this white female understand why Ms. Ferraro is such a fund-raising machine.
Senator Obama's troops raise WAY more dough month after month with little to no effort.
If I were in the Obama administration, I'd say "no, thanks" to any Ferraro-Funds.

Thanks. Seriously. I don't get it.

Ms Farraro is pathetic and enabling. Hillary comes over as an unfeminine two-faced BITCH as does Ms. Ferraro. Hillary has been exposed and I am even more uncomfortable with her now and I vow I will NEVER vote for her. I will vote for McCain over her, if I vote at all. OBAMA is a breath of fresh air.

One day a women will be president but it WILL NOT BE HILLARY.

Ms. Ferraro go do yourself and the women's movement another favor please....why not suggest OBAMA is only where he is because he is black to play into all the hicks in Pennsylvania....Oh! you have done that already. Did I hear you say that Hillary is only where she is because he, sorry I mean she is a woman????? Like I said, selfish racist Bitches all of you. And you all will not win this cycle....Pennsylvanians are not STUPID. Should Hillary manage to steal or maneuver her way to the nomination she will lose the GE......guaranteed.

Clinton hasn't outright denounced OR rejected Ferraro's comments, because it's part of the Clinton strategy. I do not want these people in my party. I reject and denounce (and despise) Clinton and Ferraro.

68% of 'white men' in Mississippi voted for Hillary Clinton. - Just think about that for a minute.

Hillary, do you denounce and reject Ferraro? After all I believe it was you who made sure that Obama denounce and reject Farrakhan by saying "I made it very clear that I did not want their support. I rejected it ... and it look as though I might pay a price for that but I would not be assocaited with people who said such inflammatory and untrue charges..and I was willing to take that stand... at the time I thought it was more important to stand on principle and to reject the kind of condition that went with a support like that." What happened to your PRINCIPLES? Oh yeah, I forgot. You have none.

"Don't antagonoize people like me..."

Like what?
A bitter has-been who is now living vicariously through Clinton in hopes of retaining a high post or even her once sought after vp-ship?
or people who fight dirty and highly disdain logic?

Um, her whole voting demographic? You know, the one you can't win a general election without. But, maybe that's not important to you.

It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it!

I beg to differ with Geraldumb Ferraro. If Obama was white his name would be John Edwards. You know that one time-senator who first announced for president after two years in the US senate who became vice-presidential nominee in 2004 and a two-time potential democratic presidential nominee for this election. Was this only because John Edwards was white?...if Clintonistas had any intellectual integrity they would only answer YES on the basis of the stupidity spewed by Ferraro and Pat Buchanon (racists of a feather stick together).

Obama supporters should recognize all of this for what it is. Billary and their henchmen ensuring an Obama defeat in the fall so that she can run again in 2012. The party establishment is allowing it to happen because they don't want a Black man in the white house. They feel that they have replaced Blacks with Hispanics and now they can toss you all away.

We should start organizing a third party effort now. Obama supporters should begin collecting signatures within the 50 states to run our candidate in the fall. If not him then we should consider drafting Gore or Feingold. We should be proactive and accept that the Democratic Party is the same as the republicans and neither are the place for progressive views and embracing diversity.

Sorry to all the Obama, Clinton, and McCain supporters, but fuck 'em all. All three major party candidates want a larger military. They all want a war-based economy. They all want the military industrial complex to drive our lifestyles. None of them want change; that 's just a bullshit line and it doesn't hold water from their very own words. Nader was absolutely right, 100% right, when he said that there were no major differences between the parties. None. I prefer to vote for a different kind of nation and society, one more akin the the supposed democratic republic that our nation's fathers mistakenly used to gain freedom for the wealthy and independence to exploit the poor and less-well armed. God bless America, nation founded on genocide and accruing grace through each generation.

Ok...sure...anything you say guys. Sen Obama, please tell Mr Axelrod that attempts will be made (LOL) to remove Geraldine Ferraro AFTER Mr Axelrod is removed from his role as your Campaign Manager . Remind Mr Axelrod why you hired him to work for you. You did so because his firm has an excellent reputation helping black candidates shape their political message so that they can attract sympathetic white votes and angry black votes. As a result, race baiting is common practice among your campaign staff. Ferraro is a tough cookie who doesn't crumble easily. Try to use race baiting with Mrs Ferraro again and boy are you going to be sorry if she bites & you try to reel her in! I hope you can swim because you will be going down...

The poltical game the Clinton's are playing is dangerous to our country and party. By using Ferraro as their surrogate to create a racist divide to encourage the uneducated white vote in Pennsylvania and future primaries is not only decietful but destructive to our country and party.

Sadly, many women have been duped by Clinton and the men who devised this all or nothing strategy. It also demonstrates how Clinton has played on the uneducated white voter who is so clouded by the gender and racial divide the Clinton's have created that they are unable to see the threat to their children and grandchildrens future. The hell on earth that has been created over the last eight years will only enlarge when McCain is elected and it is the children who will pay for the Clinton's behavior.

This is a woman who is so consumed with gaining power that she will destroy anyone and everyone to get it, even our children and their future.

I encourage everyone and anyone who cares about their children and their future to stand up against the Clinton's and start to educate those who are blinded to the horror they are creating. This is wrong and reflects how desperately we need to educate our society so we can all see how we are being used and abused.

This is no coincidence, this has been coordinated with the campaign.

This is just another example of the Clintons using the sleazy tactics of personal destruction. I hope that the party elders i.e. Gore and those 50 super delegates that are being held back, come out endorse Barack, and tell the Clintons that their sideshow is over.
