Senior officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation repeatedly approved the use of "blanket" records demands to justify the improper collection of thousands of phone records, according to officials briefed on the practice.

The bureau appears to have used the blanket records demands at least 11 times in 2006 alone as a quick way to clean up mistakes made over several years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to a letter provided to Congress by a lawyer for an F.B.I. agent who witnessed the missteps.

SO WHY IS THIS STORY BURIED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE WITH ONLY 1 COMMENT???

This is perhaps the biggest issue facing our society: is this Administration using the "war on terrorism" to violate our civil liberties? I cannot believe more people (tempted to use sheeple) are not on a warpath over this issue.

Now a small group of Democrats are standing up to the Bush Administration and proposing we DO NOT grant telecoms retroactive immunity. The Judiciary is a co-equal and separate branch of government and should have the opportunity to review these eavesdropping cases. Courts should be granting immunity, not Congress.

This Administration is so out of control, anyone trying to put to brakes on should be commended. There should be a full-out investigation of domestic spying. Are we fighting for freedom while losing it in our own backyard???

The records, for the most part, belong to the average American citizen. Our lives can be traced, privileged communications with professionals about our medical conditions and our lives can be made available to anyone, anywhere.

We need to be logical. Are Al Qaeda terrorists going to phone others to discuss their plans? Are they going to text message or e-mail their cohorts to discuss attack plans? No! It would appear that in the year 2008, the terrorists have more sense than the leaders of the free world. Put that one in your hookah and smoke it! Oops, I think George Bush already did that! Well, there you have your explanation!

American cowards (citizens) have given up their freedom to assauge their fear. All of the good people over time who have given their lives for this freedom have died in vain and we are left with the Patriot Act and the Telecom bill. I live in a country of fools and cowards who do not deserve the feedom they inherit. The rub is our children will be killed by the neglect of our fellow citizens in street crime and murders. And oh yes, wait till the troops do come home from the killing fields of Iraq. They won't be able to just turn it off until after 20 years when 50% of then will be homeless and living under freeways with the sex offenders. Yes, we really care about the troops. What a joke this country has become. Cowards, torturers, liars, theives, did I mention cowards.

Nancy is either a traitor OR she's being blackmailed by illegal wiretapping, much the same as is discussed in this article. Certainly, she should resign and put the public good above her own skin.
