Clinton Donors Threaten To Withhold Funds From DNC

The New York Times reports on the latest behind-the-scenes conflict over the delegate stalemate in Florida and Michigan.

Reflecting how tense the situation has become, influential fund-raisers for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton have stepped up their behind-the-scenes pressure on national party leaders to resolve the matter, with some even threatening to withhold their donations to the Democratic National Committee unless it seats the delegates from the two states or holds new primaries there. [...]

Pushing to seat the Florida delegates, at least one top Clinton fund-raiser, Paul Cejas, a Miami businessman who has given the Democratic National Committee $63,500 since 2003, has demanded Democratic officials return his 2007 contribution of $28,500, which they have agreed to do.

"If you're not going to count my vote, I'm not going to give you my money," said Mr. Cejas, who was the United States ambassador to Belgium from 1998 to 2001.

Christopher Korge, a Florida real estate developer who is another top fund-raiser for Mrs. Clinton, held an event last year in his home that brought in about $140,000 for the national party, which was set aside in a special account for the general election battle in Florida. But he told committee officials this week that if Florida's delegate conundrum was not settled satisfactorily he would be asking for the money back.

"If we do not resolve this issue," Mr. Korge said, "I think it's safe to say there will be a request for a return of $140,000."

And then they will hold their breath until she gets the nomination because she was told she was going to the coronation and the win was in the bag!

To quote the immortal words of Eric Cartman . . . . ."You will respect my authoritii", is so appro-po in describing the Billary "bunch" mentality and their regard for the DNC.

These people are not DNC donors. They are just billary loyalists, also known as blackmailers. If the DNC has to rely on blackmailers like these billary loyalists, why not let them handpick a candidate every four years?

Another thought on the "Follow the Money Theme"

1) Senator Clinton refuses to disclose her Tax Returns.

2) Senator Clinton refuses to disclose her Earmarks.

3) Senator Clinton's Fat Cat Donors are lining up to demand their "donations" to the DNC be returned.

Any correlation between 1), 2) and/or 3)?

You be the judge. Oh, sorry, you can't because we don't know what 1) and 2) are. All we know is that 3) is a thinly veiled attempt to apply financial pressure on the DNC to sway it's decision making. If it involved future donations or support one might consider it bribery. When it involves demanding a return of funds already donated (and thus likely earmarked for use and being depended on) it's nothing short of extortion.

Is this the kind of government you want? True, you may be used to it after 7 years of the Bush Administration but I think the reason most Democrats are trying to get a Democrat elected is to make some changes?

Go for it! Glad to see these people fight the same moronic so called "Lefty" Insurgency that destroyed Democratic control in 1968 and 1980. With the operative word being MORONIC.

Obama and his INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST surrugates (and brainwashed by MSNBC.COM and CNN.COM young supporters) are no different from the radical right wing Republican base, And Obama (the "unita not a divida) has the AUDACITY to praise the Republicans who have been desroying the Middle Class for decades and equating Hillary with GWB, when she is the opposite.

He is a bike rider bowing to Republicans and praising them, while kicking the heads of Democrats. IT IS OBAMA THAT HAS BEEN PLAYING THE RACE CARD IN COLABORATION WITH CHRIS MATHEWS AND TIM RUSSERT, WHO CHALLANGED HIM TO ATTACK Hillary, handed him the REPUBLICAN TALKING POINTS TO attack her with --- All begun last October AFTER FOR 10 MONTHS SHE HAD BEEN RUNNING AGAINST THE REPUBLICANS AND PRAISING FELLOW DEMOCRATS.

Obama is the Bush Candidate. Has been willing to do anything To cover his lack of international and White House and national legislative experience....even stooped to trashing baby boomers He is full of himself and running a campaign based on PR Republican operative Frank lunz. "It's not what you say but what people hear."

It is quite clear that Obama cannot win the General election and like Bush is a "Gambler" gambling with our lives!

As Tracy Morgan said on SNL when asking what qualifies Hillary to be President:

"If Hillary"s last name wasn"t Clinton she"d be some crazy white lady with too much money and not enough love"n¦ I know women like that and you do not want them on the phone at 3 in the morning."

Look, Democracy, has a price!!
Oh wait, then its not democracy, its Authoritarian rule.
But thats ok, we will still call it a democracy and no one will ever notice.

Kind of like having terminal cancer, and calling it cold.

Money talks and integrity walks? It's Clinton-integrity is already lacking.
So enlightening to know what the Party is dealing with here!
Maybe some good people will bring attention to Hillary's way of threatening for the nomination to the media and actually get some coverage on the queen's tactics.
Bringing GOP techniques home. Anyone want to play?

Threats, law suits, changing the rules, smears, false attacks! Is this the leadership we want in the White House?

I support Senator Barack Obama because of his leadership ability, integrity, intelligence and judgement. Not to mention that he has the endorsements of the leaders in the Democratic party I most admire. I worked in one of his campaign offices and know absolutely he runs a clean grassroots funded campaign, "from the ground up." Senator Obama is truly the presidential candidate of the American people.

well, when you're used to being bought, i guess people will always be able to hold that over your head.

He should have thought about that before, he was aware of the rules before he voted, and b4 the fundraising.

I'm a small time donor who will vote for Barack if he gets the nomination, but I'm so disgusted by HuffPo, Daily Kos, etc and their non-stop Hillary hate that I won't be donating money or working the phones for him the way I have been for her.

If I want this level of vitriol against my candidate I'll go listen to Faux News or Chris Matthews.

It just happens that the Clintons have toxified a history that could have been. We were on the threshold of an historic international drama: the election of the first woman or African American to the Presidency of a nation born to slavery and no female franchise. The Clinton's racialized the race with Bill, Ferraro and Hillary's blantant race-baiting. The Clintons violated Hillary's WRITTEN pledge not to campaign in Michigan and Florida...and NOW calls for the votes there to be counted. The Clintons are trying to extort the DNC now by saying that the rules be broken or the Clinton's donors will demand a refund.
Their bone-deep corruption polluted what could have been a shining moment. An African American will probably be elected president...but like everything the Clintons touch, the victory will be sullied by the venality and scorched earth tactics of a putrescent dynasty of a President with no self-respect and a Senator with no respect for the voters or her country. We could have been the City on the Hill...alas!

Anyone who is a Democrat and uses their money to further Democrats, can't possibly withhold money from the DNC. Howard Dean is the reasons we're doing as well as we are. His 50 state strategy is why we'll have a Dem President and, if you keep contributing, why we'll take the House and the Senate, as well as more State seats as well.

If you withhold your money in order to squeeze the DNC because of Hillary, the vast majority of the Dem establishment will withdraw any and all of its support for Mrs. Clinton.

When is everyone going to finally get it. Mrs. Clinton is no longer running as a Democrat. She's running as a monarchy.

Who knew she was related to King George. Who'd a thunk it?

Why won't the DNC reprimand her highness. Losing thousands would still be worth getting a winning ticket-and that does not include Clinton. Don't like entitlement queens-they can't be satisfied and they can not satisfy the voters.

read the article, these are florida donors who want thier votes counted, since the Republican legislature would not allow the election to be held on Feb 5th , they have a legitimate rant, or have democrats decided not to listen to the voters?? all 1.75 million of them. If we dont let Michigan and Florida be counted, we can kiss them goodbye in the general, then it wont matter who our nominee is. So Clinton and Obama should support, a recount or in floridas case count the votes

Technically since Bill ran the monarchy first, shouldn't he be sorta kinda deceased in order for Hillary to "take her turn", as it were? Sorry, couldn't resist. *slapping wrists*

So some of the financial backers are resorting to what can't be called anything less than bribery now? Seriously? Good Lord.

As far as the whole Florida/Michigan flap goes:

I had read somewhere earlier that there was another state that did the same thing but paid no consequences. I haven't looked it up yet, but if anyone has any knowledge of this, please chime in!

If that turns out to be true, then I believe that it is the DNC's obligation to pay for new primaries/caucuses for both states.

Now if Florida and Michigan are the only states that broke the rules, the DNC needs to stand firm on their ruling. I understand that the voters in both states are angry, and with good reason. However, the powers that be in those states were the ones who chose to break the rules. They could have (*should* have) conceded gone back to the original dates, especially since they knew what the consequences were beforehand. The anger should be pointed directly at them, and nobody else.

This whole thing is looking like a power struggle between a little kid and their Mommy now. You agree to a ruling but when it doesn't play out to your advantage, you keep pestering and pestering until Mommy (or in this case, Daddy Dean) gives in.

Mr. Dean, stop enabling this crap! Democrats have had a history of cannibalizing themselves and this election year is no exception. The sad part is that at least some of this junk could have been nipped in the bud if you stepped up, exerted your power, and stood firm.

"Clinton Donors Threaten To Withhold Funds From DNC"

They might as well give it to the RNC. Or did they donate so much money to the DNC in the first place just to get their barbed and poisoned hooks in, to do as much damage as possible pulling out? Thanks, Hil.

I'm glad to see that the doners are speaking up. This situation is unacceptable. It's obvious the resolution is due to the demographics. Obama simply is trying to manipulate the system to avoid counting Floridians so he can push his delegate count method over popular vote method.

That's not at all fair and certainly not smart for the party.

Funny, when queen Hillary was expecting an easy slide into the Demo nomination, she Signed a Contract, Gave Her Word she would accept the Florida and Michigan delegates.

Good look into what her "Presidency" would be like. Just what we need, more phonies in office.

People need to call the DNC --Democratic leaders and let them know how bogus her demands are. Let Dean know you support his stand! Democrats.org

As truly vital as it is that each American's vote be counted, why didn't this mayhem over leaving Florida and Michigan unseated start when the decision was first made? Obama is right, it was an unconscionable decision, however the decision was made and should be final. It's doubtful to me that Clinton *suddenly* believes Florida and Michigan voters" rights were discounted - why wasn"t she making this fuss when she was the presumed Democratic nominee?

She did state long ago that the delegates should be seated, long long ago. Thats why she had the foresight to keep her name on the ballot. In florida if you remove your name from the primary ballot it cant be on the general, does anyone know if it is the same in Michigan??

Coercion- the act of compelling by force of authority.
Extortion- a criminal offense, which occurs when a person either obtains money, property or services from another through coercion or intimidation

Take your pick!

Obama should be commended and encouraged for having reduced the Clintons Presidential 3rd term inevitability to shreds. This can be seen in the Clintons desperation in wanting to get DNC rules overturned, fighting for the Florida & Michigan primaries results to count, fighting for a do- over in those states should the DNC refuse to count the votes of the Jan 15 and 29 Primaries, Endorsing a Republic
