Obama Prepares For Full Assault On Clinton's Ethics

The Chicago Tribune reports that Barack Obama's is pushing this week for greater transparency in his campaign as part of a plan to launch a head-on attack against his opponent Sen. Clinton.

Sen. Barack Obama is trying to air his dirty laundry -- even some items that might appear just a little wrinkled -- as he prepares a full assault on Sen. Hillary Clinton over ethics and transparency.

On Saturday he invoked Robert F. Kennedy as he continued to try to distance himself from controversial statements made by his former Chicago pastor that are circulating on the Internet.

With a gap between campaign contests, Obama is trying to unload controversies. On Friday he held extended conversations with the Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times about his longtime relationship with indicted developer and fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko.

The Illinois Democrat is also expected to make public his tax returns for several years before 2006, documents he previously has provided to the Tribune and other news organizations.

The plan seems to be yielding dividends, if the Tribune is to be believed. After sitting with the papers editorial board to answer every question asked about his relationship with Tony Rezko, the Chicago Tribune had this to say:

When we endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination Jan. 27, we said we had formed our opinions of him during 12 years of scrutiny. We concluded that the professional judgment and personal decency with which he has managed himself and his ambition distinguish him.

Nothing Obama said in our editorial board room Friday diminishes that verdict.

We said in that same editorial that Obama had been too self-exculpatory in explaining away his ties to Tony Rezko. And we've been saying since Nov. 3, 2006 -- shortly after the Tribune broke the story of Obama's house purchase -- that Obama needed to fully explain his Rezko connection. He also needed to realize how susceptible he had been to someone who wanted a piece of him -- and how his skill at recognizing that covetousness needed to rise to the same stature as his popular appeal.

Friday's session evidently fulfills both obligations. Might we all be surprised by some future disclosure? Obama's critics have waited 16 months for some new and cataclysmic Rezko moment to implicate and doom Obama. It hasn't happened....

...Barack Obama now has spoken about his ties to Tony Rezko in uncommon detail. That's a standard for candor by which other presidential candidates facing serious inquiries now can be judged.

For Independent Junkie,

We have to be careful how we define hurl and how we define invectives. We also have to be careful who defines what can and cannot be said. The constitution does not say freedom of speech has to be polite and defer to people in power. We do not have to sit down with tea with people who have made really bad decisions for the rest of us and refuse to admit their mistakes and clean them up themselves. Wright is yelling at an administration who dragged America into or kept America in a vulnerable situation in which another group of crazy people took it out on the American people in New York. No one in power tried to prevent the tragedy, and I don't mean through tighter security. Wright is yelling at an administration who dragged America into an unnecessary war for, well, the truth is still yet to be heard if we can save it from the shredder. Mostly people in power get psychologically sick with self-interest, power and greed. Look at Bush, who doesn't deviate from this political madness. Voters have to start with this idea as their base. We can't achieve everything all at once. But we can start at the best of what is possible at the moment. This time it is not the best of two evils. This is different. We can't lose sight of this truth. It's all we have. We have a chance for some real breakthroughs ahead that begin with this election process as long as we continue to participate. Recognizing degrees is our right to use reason and not media sound bites. Don't let the media steal your chance to take the first steps in participating in your own change.

McCain of course shouldn't even be considered as a serious candidate. He's not only had more time to become the most insane candidate on the scrolls, but he also has war issues he just can't kick. We shouldn't have to go to therapy for him while he shoots up his enemies.

Vote your choice.

My choice: Vote for the two democrats on the same ticket. Either way.

Hey Obama we pretty much know everything Hillary has done. I think its starting to come out just what you have done. Better hurry. A tit for a tat!

Clintonites, telling the truth is not playing dirty! I know when you are HRC or an HRC supporter, it may seem like it, but if you think so you are living in a bubble. Obama is simply taking Harry Truman's approach -- "I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell."

Ethical behavior and truth telling have always been a major problem for the Clintons. I hate to think what the GOP opposition research has dug up about their post presidential years.

How true! The repubs are voting for her and lying in wait. They will pounce if and when The Clintons get the nod from the supers.

SEX, LIES & VIDEOTAPE

Ok, less the sex, but plenty of lies and soon to tv's near you.............videotape. It seems that videotape does exist of Obama attending a sermon with Rev. Wrights preaching his hate speak. No wonder Obama is going all out to attack the Clinton campaign. Unfortunately for Obama, this just exposes him as who he really is.

He campaigned on change and the politics of hope. Now, he is resorting to cheap tricks against Hillary to try to minimize the impact the lies will have on his campaign. Needless to say, even his top advisors are concerned that this video does in fact exist and is going to be soon aired.

How will Obama be able to overcome this news that is completely counter to who he has run as?

I certainly don't agree with everything my preacher says or doesn't say. I have richer reasons for belonging to the family of his parish than that he is a mouthpiece for all my viewpoints. I have attended sermons by my preacher in which he says things I disagree with, and he has failed to say some things I would say. Big deal! I find this fixation on what Mr. Wright says or doesn't say, as a referendum on Mr. Obama, to be ridiculous.

It is not a matter of being there that is of issue, as you can not be held directly responsible for what you religous leader says. It is a matter of saying you never heard this type of speak and then stating you were only aware of a couple of sermons like this. If Obama has lied about his knowledge and being at these hate speak sermons, then he is like the many great politicians of the past..............HISTORY.

It seems like this is the case and this will be vetted in the next week or so when the media begin showing video contrary to what Obama has said.

it doesn't matter what you think, sorry to say and i'm not trying to be cute or disrespectful. the bottom line is the Rev is already having a huge impact on obama's poll numbers and could risk the rest of the primary and it's not going to go away.
more importantly every conservative 527 will run these clips on tv ad-nauseum! it's the kiss of the death and he will lose the general b/c of it. there is no way the american public can or will tolerate it. couple the videos w michelle's poor choice of words and you have a losing mixture.
i'm fairly neutral now that my primary has passed, i'll work diligently for the nominee but i have to say that the disperity b/t the opinions on the Rev and Gerry seem a tad out of whack. every comment i read last week regarding gerry was fairly extreme by comparison to the complete lack of outrage coming from obama supporters on Rev's comments which seemed far more extreme than Gerry's.
regardless of who you support, i believe it's important to be honest w/ yourself.

Awesome! Now that's what I expect from a Chief Executive Officer, the President of the USA!
Inspirational, big picture oriented, exceptional organisational skills, lead by example, unblemished personal and professional track records, frank open hearted and transparent. I just can't wait for America to vote in Obama as President - what a breath of fresh air....

On another note, it amazing that McCain can so blatantly ignore the wishes of the maority of America's citizens - public support and approval for the Iraq quagmire is at record lows and yet he still throws himself fully behind this mess and travel to Iraq (which by the way is even deadlier than his last visit, and the same streets he strolled down last time under heavy guard is now under control of the Sadr Army, which is influenced by Iran, which has become the new regional power thanks to America.

Histroy will show McCain totally blew it by identifying himself so completely with Iraq that Obama completely trounced him being anti-War

Too bad Obama doesn't speak with the same candor when addressing his attendance at a racist church.

Excellent plan.... good for Senator Obama.... tell everything there is to tell, then there is nothing left for your opponent to dig up..... unless of course.... gasp.... he gets a parking ticket or something horrible like that... heh.........

But, I have to ask Hillary.... gotten around to finding those tax returns yet? No.... Well how about those documents from the Clinton Presidential Library? Nope........ still waiting.............

I'm not surprised. He will remain positive only as long as it suits him. He is like any other ambitious politician; he wants the job, and he'll do and say whatever it takes.

Your remarks sound strangely like Mrs. Clinton.

Of course, he wants the job for a lot of reasons, among them to effect change in our government, and also, for the significance and the power of the position. So, we don't fault him for that. There is nothing wrong with that.

How late do the Clintons file their tax returns? I mean, seriously, with that sort of income they should be able to hire a CPA who can file it punctually for them!

They're stalling because there's SOMETHING IN THERE! Serioulsy, I can't imagine any possible other reason. They're filed, they're done, they're complete. They just don't want to release them!

Hillary is focusing on that as we speak.

The reason Obama was encouraged by Ted Kennedy to enter the presidential race in the first place was because he hadn't been around long enough to collect much "baggage". Obama was encouraged to vote "present" rather than for or against an issue to keep his "baggage" light. I want more than an empty bag for President.

His pastor is saying what many Americans think. Are we now as bad as Zimbabwe when it comes to our freedom of speech?

Is this what we've become, - A society of echo-chamber zombies who do and say only what the TV and authority tells us to? We should be celebrating open debate and challenges to authority, instead, we chastize those who speak outside of cult norms and don't sing along.

Are we too afraid to stand-up for ourselves and our beliefs? Will we ever challenge overreaching power and oppression again in this country?

Where did courage go?

Exactly. I for one, didn't find anything he said to be shocking. However, McCorp.'s guy Hagee saying that gays caused hurricane Katrina, well I found that pretty offensive.

Clinton has ethics??? That would be the big story.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 03/17/2008

So, Barack will stoop low to go after Clinton's ethics, rather than tout his own accomplishments. Is this man any different than any other politician? Apparently not.
And what kind of Democrat is he? I honestly think I do not know this party anymore.

I don't think he has any choice. Idiotic as the Clintons' negative campaign has been (the red phone, the "plagiary" nonsense, the nonsensical "experience" mantra, etc., etc.), we must have learned from four years ago that idiotic negativism must be not merely rebutted but its purveyors need to be exposed for what they are (especially in the case of the Clintons). I thought, four years ago, that the Swift Boat stuff was nonsense, but it apparently had some legs. Kerry made a mistake in looking the other way.

Damn!! I knew it! The Clinton supporters from KOS have all landed here! How many nuts have fallen from the clinton trees and think they are superior to the rest of us? Barack merely declared his form of war with gloves on. He has made his life more an open book than the books he already wrote. So clintonites, what has your candidate shared recently? Not tax returns, not library monies, not donors, not anything. Whine whine whine now as you don't has KOS to kick around for now. What did he do to you anyway? Maybe we can repeat it and get you to stop on HuffPo too? Please please tell us now!!

Frankly, if we're going to focus on spouses, let's hear more about how Michelle is getting paid a huge salary after Obama sent earmarked funds from taxpayers to her employer. Then we can talk about Bill's documents. Her salary source is a great deal more relevant, really. We now know that he's not above padding his own personal account with taxpayer money.

Bills documents seem pretty irrelevant to me. What do the reports from aides over pardons have to do with today?
