Barack Obama told CNN Wednesday the recent uproar over his former pastor's sermons has reminded him of the odds he faces in winning the White House.

"In some ways this, this controversy has actually shaken me up a little bit and gotten me back into remembering that the odds of me getting elected have always been lower than than some of the other conventional candidates," the Illinois senator told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an exclusive one-on-one interview.

athy-

What obama's speech was about to me is choice.
We can choose to understand or not.
We can talk about issues or not
We can work together or not.
We can work to make the world a better place for all the next generation or not.
We can choose to be afraid of others or not.

Americans have never been afraid

I am an American and I am not afraid

How about you?

Why is Sen. Obama always bringing up race in this race?
This race should be about votes-his votes in Congress.
If you want to keep this public discourse on the topic of race, then I will oblige one more time so that we can hopefully FINALLY move on to your voting record in Congress-where you have consistently sabotaged attempts to solve problems that affect middle class Americans.
Is it true that you supported 3rd ward Ald. Dorothy Tillman in her runoff (which she ultimately lost) against independent Pat Dowell" last year?
http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obamacommentary/309639,CST-EDT-MILL23.stng#
SunTimes Commentary- "Will 3rd Ward politics affect Obama's presidential race? " by Rich Miller 3/23/07
Ms Tillman has an impressive record in the civil rights movement-no doubt.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Tillman
She is also one of the leading and outspoken U.S advocates of reparations for slavery.
What is your position on reparations for slavery in the U.S?
What about reparations for slavery from western, ex-colonial powers for Africa and African nations? I understand that during the 2001 UN-sponsored World Conference against Racism, many African nations demanded an apology-plus other things- from ex-colonial European nations for the role they (European nations) had in promoting the slave trade.
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/africa/09/01/durban.slavery/index.html
"Africa calls for slavery apology" , cnn.com, 9/0/01

"DURBAN, South Africa -- African leaders have called on the U.S. and Europe to apologize for their part in the colonial slave trade but are divided on whether to insist on reparations."
What is your opinion on this?
And one last question for now-
You told us that although you support Rev Wright-( you have been attending his church over 20 years and he married you & your wife and baptized your children etc¦) you disagree with many of his views.
What do you and Rev. Wright agree on ? What holds you together? What is the "glue" that keeps your relationship with him so strong over the years in spite of the fact that you disagree with him on some issues. By the way- what issues exactly do you disagree with him on?
I will wait for your responses.
Now that I have contributed some thoughts on your discussion dealing with race- can we move on?
I do not view you as a liberal, progressive Democrat because¦you do not vote on issues in the way that a liberal, progressive, Democrat would. Please explain your voting record in Congress.

Ms. Tillman, on the Chicago City Council floor, after somebody mentioned Mexican-Americans in her ward are also citizens , said, " The Voting Rights Act pertains to African-Americans only and not those Mexicans." Yeah, she's a real champion of equal rights, gimme a break..........as for slavery, should the muslims and Ashanti tribesmen who hunted down the folks and then sold them to the Europeans, how come you exempt them from oweing reparations? Just asking.

Maybe because the republicons have insisted that he address it. Some damned if he did and some damned him if he didn't. Hagee who sits at the right hand of GWB and McCain called my church a bunch of 'Catholic Whores.' Oh no! Who cares? It's not an issue and the media made it one and that my dear is why Barack addressed it. It's okay. Let's see what he's about, give him and Hillary a chance to voice how they will run their presidency if elected. Remember were a democracy. Peace.

What this all points out is just how LITTLE we know about Barak Obama...

After giving him a free pass on being a NO SHOW for two important Senate resolution vote regarding IRAQ and IRAN (he is shrwed and cynical enough to have realized that by NOT VOTING, he could chastise his opponent(s), WHICHEVER WAY THEY VOTED, if it served his purpose, because it would appear that he had taken the opposite, "better judgement" position, WHEN HE ACTUALLY TOOK NO ON THE RECORD POSITION AT ALL!!!), and dismissing his non-attribution "plagerism" after having vilified Joe Biden for having done the very same thing, he is now being scrutinized the way any other candidate has been...

While I and other Democrats might think McCain is an up-standing enough guy to vote for as a protest against the bullshit that the Democratic party (thanks, Howard) is putting itself thru, WE CANNOT GIVE IN TO THAT TEMPTATION...WE CANNOT HAVE A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT, regardless of what his name is... WE CANNOT HAVE ANOTHER REPUBLICAN AG or SCOTUS APPOINTMENT.

WE MUST SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE... BUT, before we cannonize Barak Obama, I would just urge caution and remind you all -- CAVEAT EMPTOR...Know what you are "buying" before you sign on the dotted line, because there is no 3-day buyers' remorse clause here (unless you consider the Super-Delagates, which makes their potentially strong influence a little more palatable.)

I'm just saying...

I guess its ok that whites and blacks continue living the fantasy that we trust each others communities. I guess the virtual lie that we are united can continue. You tell your kids to work with them but dont live and play and I will tell mine! Does this thought not hurt anyone? Are Americans so cold hearted that the concept of love thy neighbor if they look like you is ok but if they are different SCREWEM? I guess it will continue to seem ok for a black man to pass an older white woman who has a flat tire on the interstate and not stop to help and she accept it, thinking oh well she should have gotten AAA. Its cool America, let us just think about our money, our wars, our taxes. Oh damn im missing something, America has americans, it has people? oh dont worry about them money, war and taxes will take care of that. No love, hahaha well sure sounds funny saying it. I guess we do love to hate more than we care to love. BLAH BLAH BLAH go ahead say what other country has ever done what we have. Cool I give us that, but why are you scared to say you can do so much more. Are we a nation afraid to cry, not for the love ones passed on but cry for the one many that are living. Do we not as a UNITED STATES, cry for some AMERICAN we have never meet that we see in pain and suffering. But as the Vice President said yesterday. "SO" hahahaha. But I understand American. When you have shed so many tears, at some point the tears dont shed anymore. I guess. So cools lets be this.... Damn I am not sure what America is becoming. Does anyone?

Beware Obama supporters. The Republicans will resort to their customary gutter tactics in the Fall campaign. You haven't seen anything yet. As a veteran observer of political campaigns, I've witnessed it all. And being a passionate supporter of the Democratic party, it has been so deeply frustrating and troubling for me to watch the Republicans use their slimeball tactics to destroy an individual I passionately support.

And what further adds fuel to the fire is the apparent, and sometimes obvious, complicity on the part of the mainstream media to advance Republicans efforts in achieving that objective. They often function like the political wing of the Republican party, propagandizing and destroying opposition candidates via show content, guest selection, editorial policy and programming. I've seen it time and time again from when I first began following political campaigns beginning with the '72 Nixon/McGovern campaign. The ugliness of these campaign tactics became even more reprehensible and obvious with Bush/Dukakis in '88 and Bush/Kerry in '04. How many of you remember the "Willy Horton" ad run by Bush #41 against Dukakis in '88, or the more recent "Swiftboat" ad by the Republicans against John Kerry in '04? The media, in both cases, replayed these ads ad nauseum, even though by all rights, they shouldn't have seen the light of day. And to further exacerbate the issue, they often followed the running of these ads with "discussions" that only served to further damage the campaign of the Democratic nominee. Yes, when the rubber hits the road, there is a definite bias on the media's part that favors the Republican candidate. And it goes into high gear at the most opportune time.

Bringing it to the present tense, we also caught a glimpse of the media's tactics in the current campaign on the weekend before the Ohio and Texas primaries. All Obama had to do to end the Clinton candidacy was to win either or both of these contests. And a week or so before these primaries, it seemed within the realm of possibility, too. Obama had momentum building. He was on a roll. And then on the Friday before the primaries, the media struck! Remember all of that negative Obama publicity we were witness to? We constantly heard about Obama and "NAFTA-gate". Then there were the numerous references to Obama's relationship to that Tony Rezko fellow who was on trial in Chicago. Then there was the constant replay of Clinton's "3AM Red Phone" ad and the seemingly endless discussions about it. And then, to top it all off, Clinton benefited from the repeated airings of that humorous SNL skit that only served to raise Clinton's positives and appeal. And all of this transpired in the four days leading up to the Texas and Ohio primaries. Oh, and I forgot to mention, Rush Lamebrains dittoheads who voted in huge numbers for Clinton in Texas -- well over 100,000 of them!

We are now seeing the media, particularly on various cable news shows, harp on Obama's negatives to the exclusion of almost everything else. Have you noticed all of the nitpicking going on with some of the Republican pundits over Obama's incredible speech concerning Rev. Wright? They refuse to let it go. They, in effect, are saying that Obama must be held accountable for the words spoken by someone else. Guilt by association. It's patently offensive and an outrage to continue in such a way. But they do so anyway.

Joe Scarborough of MSNBC, who is on for 3 hours every weekday morning with his "morning joe" show, seems to have adopted Obama's defeat as his personal mission in life on behalf of his beloved Republican party. It has become conspicuously obvious that his intent was and is to promote dissent and dissarray within Democratic ranks by supporting a Clinton candidacy to the very end. His lineup of guests are often heavily weighted in favor of the Republicans and Clinton. If any of you watched his show on the day of Obama's historic speech, you can readily attest to this.

So, not only must Obama defeat Clinton and McCain, but he must also contend with a mainstream media that often seems to be the political wing of the Corporatist party -- the Republicans. His mission will not be easy. And he will need the help of all of us and keeping everyone "honest".

Finally, let me suggest to all Obama supporters to "inoculate" yourself against the oncoming rush of toxic reporting and tactics aimed specifically at derailing Obama's campaign. Obama should quickly adopt those tactics employed by Bill Clinton in his successful campaign against Bush #41 in '00. He was able to immunize the electorate by predicting what his enemies would say or do and by effectively communicating his view or take on it. In other words, he was on the offensive, anticipating his opponent's moves and taking those steps to defuse a potentially damaging situation. So that when the electorate did see their slimy ads or whatever, they knew what to expect. They were psychologically prepared and were able to discount it as trash and move on.

Obama '08!

Are you aware AL GORE, in the '88 democratic primary was the FIRST person to use the Willie Horton Ad against Dukakis? ........Are you aware the commercial called the most negative political ad in history was perpetrated by Mr. Liberal, Bill Moyers, against Goldwater when he was LBJ's campaign manager. A little girl picking flowers with an A-Bomb going off behind her with the ad saying Goldwater would ignite nuclear warfare. So dirty that an angry LBJ himself demanded it pulled............BTW, when is Mr. Liberal going to offer his employees at NPR health insurance, which as of now he won't do? Talk about a hypocrite.

Interesting post and pretty much on target.

So the big mean republican attack machine is going to be a problem that Sen. Obama needs to be prepared for! Been saying that here for several weeks. Of course, I am a Sen. Clinton supporter and feel she would better be able to handle those attacks than Sen. Obama. Experience counts and she certainly has been there before whereas Sen. Obama is pretty new on that scene.

Of course though, I must admit that the Obama followers do have a fairly good mean attack machine in and of itself. Have done a pretty good job of attacking Sen. Clinton. (Have said that I have been quite surprised at the hatred in the democratic party, at least by Obama followers, for the Clintons. Expected that from republicans, but coming from democrats did surprise me.)

Amazing how many names I and others have been called by the Obamamites whenever we would raise a question or a concern about Sen. Obama. Some of us expressed concerns about not enough being known about him but his followers like he himself, preferred to be on that lofty pedestal he and his followers had placed him on. Now that that pedestal has crumbled and it has been shown that he is just another politician, no a new or different type of politician, just a politician who probably does not have as much in his closet as most but only because he has not been around as long as most.

I frankly see whoever the democratic nominee is being a big trouble against McCain. Looks like most of those independents who went to Obama have now switched back to McCain (think I heard something on TV or radio today that it has been an 18% swing in the past few days). Doubt if many cross-over republicans, if there were that many, are going to be staying with Sen. Obama after this Wright situation.

Has been a very interested primary watching the democrats eat their own. But imagine that I will do as I have said and if Sen. Clinton is not the democratic nominee I will be back in my republican party, and probably this time for good, and vote for McCain.

Clinton '08 or McCain '08

and...

once again I urge voters to look at Sen Obama's voting record in Congress and question it.

I agree fully with you, we need to take control of the argument and deviate Republican attacks. With respect to the Wright controversy one should be able to easily find videos on YouTube with Wright giving a less angry impression of himself, specially in his sermons. Something that would make the perspective on Wright less one sided.
Also, there are two main arguments we need to emphasize (arguments Obama might not be able to make himself). The first is that American Foreign Policy so far has had consequences that affect the US negatively. The second and most important is the fact that the main outcome of victory in Irak will be the empowerment of Iran. That is an argument that is not being made but that the moderate Republican electorate must be made aware of.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:26 PM on 03/20/2008

Don't know that additional videos depicting Rev. Wright's non-controversial sermons would solve the problem. The question I think would why did Sen. Obama choose to sit and listen those attacks against the US by his pastor in those controversial sermons that he was aware of. In my opinion shows poor judgment on Sen. Obama's part. Is it a reflection of how he would sit and not respond to verbal assaults against the U.S.?

I think I have to disagree with your statement about the outcome of victory in Iraq being the empowerment of Iran. I do think that Iran has increased its influence in the Middle East because of our involvment in Iraq (would have had far, far less of an influence if we had stated out of Iraq). I do think that now that we are there we must try to get the Iraqis to determine their own faith. If we have provided the necessary training of its forces and the political will to be a sovereign nation, I think they can withstand Iranian influence. I do think a loss in Iraq is a win for Iran. IMHO Iran will pretty much dominate Iraq. I do think we need to start drawing down our troops in Iraq and forcing the Iraqis to take over providing for their own security and governing. The current administration should have made clear in the beginning that we would offer a helping hand but we could not and would not be there holding their hand forever. Five years may not be forever, but it sure is a long, long time to be in this kind of a situation.

I wonder if we'll ever hear from Rev. Wright on this issue. I wonder if a new sermon on his controversial sermon would help close the rift that the media seems hellbent on keeping open.

Desparation brings about an obvious uneasiness in people. When things look like, the criticism is light and there is less to say. When the tide turns, you lose several primaries in a row, you have Superdelegates switch sides, you begin to grasp for straws, things go from muddy to ugly. The Rev. Wright situation was the best thing that could have happened to Obama. In this very instance, he showed not only America, but the world, why he is the best candidate we have had in years.

It's easy to say what you will do when things are going your way. But what will you do when things get rough? What will you do when even your own people (some Democrats and some supporters) turn to you and say "you need to do this" or "you need to do that?" Obama didn't answer the phone at 3am with no one there to critique how he dealt with the situation. He answered the call at 12:30 in the afternoon while the world watched. He did not do what was sensational. He did not do what was popular. He did not do what would benefit him the most. He did what was right...he did what was necessary. That, to me, is judgement. Judgment is not the ability to make the decision. Judgment is the ability to make the right decision.
