Kerry: Obama Can Bridge Divide With Islam "Because He's A Black Man"

MSNBC reports:

Speaking of the race speech from Tuesday, Obama supporter John Kerry gave an interview with a local N.H. paper, reports NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli. In it, Kerry said the color of Obama's skin makes him uniquely qualified for president and even reach out to the moderate Islam world. During an interview with the New Bedford Standard Times, portions of which were posted on YouTube, John Kerry says bluntly that Barack Obama has the potential to "bridge the divide in religious extremism" because he is black....

...The Massachusetts senator said Obama has an ability to perhaps even empower moderate Islam "to be able to stand up against the racial misinterpretation of a legitimate religion." Asked by a reporter what gave Obama the credibility to do so, Kerry said, "Because he's African American. Because he's a black man, who has come from a place of oppression and repression through the years in our own country. We only broke the back of civil rights, Jim Crow, in the 1960s here. Everybody in the world knows this is a recent journey for America too. And everybody still knows that issues of skin and discrimination still exist."

Stupid "gotcha" journalism at its best.

Anytime someone uses the word "black" or "white" you make it a headline and pretend it is racist.

HuffPo, grow up.

what a racial comment from Kerry. Shows he doesn't know Islam. Islam does not give an inch because Obama is black. Obama is american. He has to uphold the constitution and spread and defend our believe, which is democracy and capitalism Whether he is equipped to follow that , we will see. To turn the other cheeck to Islam and terrorism will just embolden them. Clinton was trying to talk to them. It didn't bring us nothing. No offense to Clinton. He slapped them on the wrist. They became bolder and meaner. The only political solution is to make a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. I don't believe Obama will have the guts to do that. A lot less then the Clintons had. At least they tried. Without peace between Israel and the Arabs , it doesn't make any difference who will occupy the White House. We will never have peace. And our pocket book well leak a slow leak until we played in the hands of evil for good.

I just think this is a riot. . Shirley Chisolm ran in 1972. She was a dynamic speaker who understood what it was like to be an African American and a woman. Ms. Chisolm also obtained 155 delegate votes with essentially no money and very limited campaigning. But that was then and this is now. Thirty years ago no one would have seriously considered an African American male or a white woman for the presidency. Ms. Chisolm ran to be heard so that the future would succeed

I think Americans are looking for something different,. Because of this, Obama and Clinton are uniquely positioned in this election cycle. This bring advantages and disadvantages for each of them. Now having said that, will it carry through along with the message to the general election?

Obama is uniquely qualified because he is African American and lived in Indonesia as a small child? He lived in Indonesia until he was 10 years old. This qualifies and foreign policy experience so the Arabs Muslims will listen to him? How does this explain native Arabs slaughtering native Africans in the Sudan?
Yes I did campaign and vote for Kerry....what a shallow view of the world.

This is so much John Kerry at his worst thinking, seeing the trees and not the forest. Can't imagine how he can make such statements but then I never could imagine how he managed to lose an election that was his for the taking if he had any idea of how to reach voters.

Yes, Americans are "concerned" about bridging the gap to moderate Muslims...all 3 of them

Many of us heard about the Natalie Holloway story, but how many have heard about what happened to Megan Williams in Oct 2007 in WV???

This is what a discussion on race topics looks like.

We have to be able to say what is on our minds right or wrong and then...

CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION

That is the only way to accomplish anything.

We all as americans have friends family and neihbors of all races in most cases.

we all incorrectly pre-judge each other.

What we need to do is find a new better common denominator and remember that we are all Americans, and our differences are the only things that make our country unique.

Rachel Maddow: Obama thinks Americans are smart.
John Stewart: Obama thinks he is talking to Adults

Come on! If we could all stop lying to ourselves and be realistic for a change, it won't hurt. It would be a good restart after 8 years of Bush. At least Obama admits the good things about the Clinton administration and Bush senior administration. He 's far from being perfect and he acknoledged it on several occasions. He doesn't demonize people unfairly, but he will tell you what many people think without saying it loud. That is how you start a conversation that could lead to constructive criticism. People need to learn from their mistakes and move forward toward a good direction. I wish people could educate themselves instead of relying to what the media dictates them to think to make their own and sound juddgement. Check the facts in their full context, analyze them and THEN make your judgement.

Ignorance prevails in Congress, who elected this idiot?

OK,
Kerry said: "Obama Can Bridge Divide With Islam "Because He's A Black Man""

Bush said: "Hillary Can Bridge Divide With Christianity "Because She's A White Woman"

The logic is not there but both idiots have used before.

Gee, here is what former Sen Bob Kerrey said in Dec 2007

"There is a smear campaign going on, and people are acting as if he's an Islamic Manchurian candidate," Kerrey said. "And I feel it's actually a substantial strength. He is a Christian. Both he and his family are Christians. They've chosen Christianity. But that connection to Indonesia and a billion Muslims on this Earth I think is a real strength and will add an awful lot of value in his foreign policy efforts."

It sounds a lot like what Sen John Kerry just said. the difference is that Bob Kerry was immediately called a RACIST for his comment.

Isn't it now time for Sen John Kerry to join everyone else under the bus?

Mixed race:The Embodiment of Unity
By Dr.Steven Ward - Mar 17th, 2008 at 8:15 pm EDT

Concerning the comments of the Reverend Wright, which Senator Obama has rightly characterised as the voice of an earlier generation which came of age in the 1960's in the stuggle for black civil rights, I think a number of points need to be raised which are of no less interest, and which appear to have been overlooked in post speech discussions in the media.
First any divisive comments which polarise black and white are quite at odds with Senator Obama's unity message. Senator Obama is not a black separatist, although the achievements of such minority groups were part of the struggle to enable a message of unity to flourish in a very real sense! The language of anger identified with the past can be tempered with the language of equinamity in the present for genuine and lasting progression in the future in respect to equality and justice in racial issues. In this sense Senator Obama is reawakening the dream of Martin Luther King and perhaps represents the practical implementor of such a dream. Whilst recognising the importance of the past, Senator Obama has rightly said on numerous occasions this present moment is a moment in history which should be effected in a very real sense with Doctor King's immediate urgency of now for the sake and welfare of the American people and the people of the world. For nothing can be achieved through division where men and women, are judged not by the content of their character but by the colour of their skin, and nothing can be achieved if the desire to implement this change through social programmes and economic policies is not fully brought into effect. This obviously has at its heart a spiritual message which appeals to us to unite as brothers and sister and above all as human beings to develop a global society free from intolerance, tyranny and fear. It is a message which all Churches and faiths of the world would recognise and applaud.

The Senator's message is also one which seeks to provide a foundation of unity in order to achieve practical solutions to economic and social problems which are becoming an increasing focus of concern not only in the USA but in the world. A weak US economy has tremendous effects not only upon the citizens of the United States but upon the economies of the world. It is of paramount importance therefore that strategies to produce a healthy economy are implemented in order to achieve stable economic influence on a global level. An awareness of environmental concerns and sensible exit strategies in Iraq, for peace as well as strengthening fiscal policy, are also consistent and unifying policies in as much as they bring the USA into line with the current developments and concerns of the majority of countries around the world.

In the figure of Barack Obama we have a man who is able through his mixed racial attributes and background to embody the theme of unity and not merely a man or woman who proffesses it from a single racial group perspective. In this he is able to best represent and empathise with the hopes of the black Afro American communities of the country but also the hopes of the white. He does this with compassion, enthusiasm and sound judgement. Translated on to the international stage this heralds real and positive hope for bringing about unity in the world not through the politics of fear but aggressive and sincere diplomacy. This marks a real and positive change for the better, and heralds a new chapter in American history where the country may once again lead by example as the advocator of freedom and a purveyor of the universal values of truth and justice to which its citizens have sworn to abide by and uphold.

THE PROBLEM IS THE MESSAGE IS GOOD, BUT WE DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT HE THINKS. DOES HE THINK LIKE HIS WIFE THAT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN HER ADULT LIFE THAT SHE WAS PROUD OF AMERICA. I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. FOR OVER 40 YEARS AMERICA HAS BENT OVER BACKWARD TO HELP BLACK AMERICANS. IF SOME WHITES ARE AFRAID OF BLACK, COULD IT BE ABOUT THINGS LIKE THOSE TWO BEAUTIFUL GIRLS KILLED BY TWO OR THREE BLACK AMERICANS DOWN SOUTH. IN PA A WHITE A WOMAN WAS CUT INTO PIECES AND THROWN ALL OVER THE ROAD, THAT WAS DONE BY A BLACK MAN. THERE ARE MANY WHITE MEN THAT ARE JUST AS BAD, I AM A WHITE WOMEN AND WHEN I SEE A STRANGE WHITE MAN I THINK TWICE. ITS NORMAL.

Senator Obama sat in the pew for 20 years and not said anything to Rev. Wrong about his anti American, anti women, anti God knows whom else? Is this the kind of "good judgment" you are going to use from day one? No, thanks. I guess he will use the same "good judgement" when brining the Muslims and Christians together! Kerry is a "has been" and now is trying to be somebody by attaching himself to Obama. Remember how Bill Clinton got out of his hospital bed and campaigned for Kerry in 2004?Well Kerry is paying back the loyalty now!! Obama is simply not electable. He should withdraw his nomination and put the democrats out this shameful situation. It is the right thing to do.
Larry King asked Obama, why he didn't leave the church, Obama's answer, "he didn't leave the church because he was retiring." Run that by me again? Obama didn't quit the church because the Rev. was retiring for 20 years? If you watch the Larry King Live, you will know exactly when he is lying!

Oh.........I think his latest comment about how his Grandmother was a "typical white person" says it all.

It's just very much like Michelle's comment.

Honestly, I don't think his grandmother ever said anything like what he's saying.

He reminds me of a teenager.

He's the teenager in this race. Everyone doesn't want to hurt his "spirit." But he's the dang teenager.

So, according to John Kerry, dark "skin color" is an asset when dealing with Muslim extremists.
Has anybody told Condoleeza Rice?

Love it. This is one of the best posts I've seen in a long time. These Libs open their mouths without thinking. Great observation. Kerry...like many Dems...don't realize what they are implying when making a statement like this. Imagine if Rush or Hannity said the very same statement? The double standard would have kicked in and the press would be demanding their removal from the air waves. Yet Kerry will be honored.

Wow, Geraldine Ferraro is working with Kerry for Obama now? Why did they hire her? I get what he's saying and all, but come on! You can say it better than that. Keep Obama's message by at least talking to Americans as if they're adults and can understand nuance. The people who don't and are white are not going to vote for him anyway!

This is what happens when you scapegoat people over stupid stuff. He's really made an idiot of himself, now. To work Ferarro into his "monumental speech" and then have his surrogate say this?

Well, this story is just as satisfying to me, HIllary supporter, as biting into the best part of a T-Bone steak. :)

yum, yum

First off, Mr. 3 Purple Hearts, if you knew anything about the turmoil in eastern Africa, you'd know that one of the largest cultural divides and causes of strife is that Arabian Muslims don't care much for black Muslims, and that's evidenced here in this nation as well to a lesser extent, but if you weren't too busy pretending to be a common man by trying to figure out what to do with a Philly Cheesesteak and a bottle of beer during your 2004 campaign, you might have noticed.

Secondly, I grow weary of all the "cuz he's black" comments, regardless if its used in a positive or negative light. 3,000 years of Middle East strife is not going to come to a screeching halt because a black man who had an absentee Muslim father is elected President.

Thirdly, black Muslims in this country don't have a reputation or history of bridging racial or religious chasms. The types like Louis Farrakhan and Malcom X have done more than enough to cause racial rift in this nation's recent history. For you Obama supporters who will have a predictable knee-jerk reaction of reading what you would presume I mean instead of what I've typed, I'm NOT calling Obama a Muslim or likening him to a race baiting bomb thrower such as Farrakhan or Malcolm X.
