Lieberman Has To Correct Another McCain Error

When McCain made a foreign policy gaffe in Jordan on Tuesday, it was Sen. Joe Lieberman who quietly pointed out the mistake, giving McCain an opportunity to correct himself in front of the international press corps. In Israel yesterday, NBC's Lauren Appelbaum reports, Lieberman once again intervened when McCain made an incorrect reference about the Jewish holiday Purim -- by calling the holiday "their version of Halloween here."

McCain made the incorrect statement during a press conference with Defense Minister Ehud Barak after touring the Israeli city of Sderot to view buildings damaged by Hamas rocket fire. McCain was discussing the numerous rock attacks on the city. "Nine hundred rocket attacks in less than three months, an average of one every one to two hours. Obviously this puts an enormous and hard to understand strain on the people here, especially the children. As they celebrate their version of Halloween here, they are somewhere close to a 15-second warning, which is the amount of time they have from the time the rocket is launched to get to safety. That's not a way for people to live obviously."

McBush gets W-level briefing. He doesn't want to be bothered with the facts. So, he will instead reach down into his limited experience and come up with a metaphor that gets him past the moment of ignorance (like probbly forgetting the name of the Holy Day, Purim -- with its foreign-sounding pronunciation).

Gosh, that little reference in Wikipedia would have given him minutes of traction over why Iran should be invaded. Instead, he embarrasses us in front of the whole world. Why have our neocon leaders, from Hoover to Tricky Dicky to Ronnie Raygun to "Lips" Bush to Dumbya to McDeath (first ours, then his, yielding to Jebbie, Romoroni, or some other Bushco appointee VP).

Senator McCain has now made this gaffe how many times in a month?

Is he just practicing (and I fear just getting warmed up) or is he now experienced at it? And is his "experience" at it enough for Senator Clinton to recommend him over Senator Obama's relative lack of experience in forgetting who we are actually fighting over there?

I hope we don't have to experience him as President McCain getting a call at 3 a.m. and forgetting that the Red Button starts that oft denied, but probably planned for, pre-emptive strike on Russia and doesn't order the Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bombing of Israel.

Look what McCain's experience in world affairs got him. He has to keep Joe by his side to correct his mistakes. If all his years got him not knowing the Iran and al Qaeda dont like each other and not being able to tell a Shia from a Sunni, I'll take Obama's inexperience any day.
