CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Barack Obama blamed the Iraq war for higher oil prices and skyrocketing debt Thursday as he sought to tie the unpopular war to the slumping economy in working-class West Virginia.

The Democratic hopeful is trying to cut into Hillary Rodham Clinton's base in West Virginia. The state's demographics appear to favor Clinton, whose support is strongest among older white voters and blue-collar workers.

"When you're spending over $50 to fill up your car because the price of oil is four times what it was before Iraq, you're paying a price for this war," Obama said. "When Iraq is costing each household about $100 a month, you're paying a price for this war."

By linking the economy to the war, Obama is playing to his perceived strength as someone who spoke out against the war as a state lawmaker in Illinois. He has criticized Clinton for only recently opposing the war and said Thursday that her criticism of Republican John McCain's war policies lacks teeth.

"Her point would have been more compelling had she not joined Senator McCain in making the tragically ill-considered decision to vote for the Iraq war in the first place," Obama said to cheers.

It was the third consecutive day that Obama set aside his usual stump speech and delivered a more focused issue speech. He discussed race relations on Tuesday and the foreign policy consequences of the Iraq war Wednesday.

Obama has won more states than Clinton, leads in the popular vote and holds a nearly insurmountable lead in pledged delegates. But neither candidate can clinch the nomination without help from superdelegates, the party leaders who are not bound by any primary or caucus and are free to vote for whomever they choose. Clinton hopes a strong finish in the remaining primaries will persuade superdelegates to back her in a close race despite the delegate shortfall.

West Virginia holds its primary May 13. The economy is a key issue in West Virginia and Obama aides concede that Clinton is expected to perform well here.

Story continues below

"For what folks in this state have been spending on the Iraq war, we could be giving health care to nearly 450,000 of your neighbors, hiring nearly 30,000 new elementary school teachers, and making college more affordable for over 300,000 students," Obama said.

Obama was introduced at the University of Charleston by West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who played up Obama's blue-collar credentials and his familiarity with his home state's coal industry.

"He's a man who's worked for everything he's achieved. That's something I can't say," Rockefeller joked. He said Obama can see the world "through the eyes of those who are in the trenches everyday struggling to make ends meet and who are fighting to keep their families together."

Later in the day, Rockefeller told a reporter, "Democrats always make a mistake by nominating people who know everything on Earth there is to know about public policy. I introduced both Al Gore and John Kerry at their rallies. They knew all the policies, but people didn't connect with them.

"You don't get elected president if people don't like you. You can know everything there is to know about health care or global warming but you have to make that connection. It's not rocket science. You have to like the person to vote for them."

Asked if he felt Barack Obama is more like Bill Clinton than Hillary Clinton is?

"I think so, yes, in that respect," Rockefeller replied.

Megan McArdle at "The Atlantic" discusses this nonsense:
********

"The current financial crisis is causing the conspiracy theorists and self-taught economists to emerge from all the dark corners and crawly undersides of the political landscape. I am not going to pick on any one blog post, because the errors are too common. But I think it's worth explaining why some of the more lunatic theories are wrong.

Item One: The Iraq War did not cause this problem

Iraq is probably contributing somewhat to headline inflation. But it is contributing by making oil somewhat more scarce, thanks to production shortfalls and hoarding by speculators. Real factor scarcity does not create the kind of inflation that touches off asset price bubbles. Only inflation of the money and credit supplies, by giving speculators money to borrow and spend on their favorite asset, has the (arguable) power to create these financial manias.

Nor does the government's borrowing create these bubbles. If anything, it mitigates them by soaking up excess capital from the markets and thus raising interest rates higher than they would otherwise be. Essentially, the government took money out of the housing market and used it to blow things up in Iraq. Bad for Iraq, but probably good for the financial markets."

It's not (just) the war, it's the inflation.

But can you say for sure that the war has no effect on inflation?

The simple complete answer is that the economy is in the toilet due to President Pan.

It's not just the war.

It's unjustified and un needed tax cuts for the already wealthy.

It's a failure to regulate our financial markets properly

And many many more things.

The Democrats need to make this a national security issue - which at the end of the day it fundamentally is. More important than Iraq and the so called global war on terror.

Bush's tax cuts stimulated the economy and helped bring us out of a recession that had begun in 2000. That's a hard, mathematical fact. You're either too biased to let it in, or you're stupid.

No president has ever had anything to do with regulating business on Wall Street. This IS stupid.

The $100 a month is money well spent for our national security. Being a spoiled child of Amerika, you've never learned the fundamentals. But it's okay, the country will always find a way to protect you, in spite of yourself.

And this is a shock to you . . . WHY? I don't think our generation has any idea just how much Bush administration screwed us under with the cost of this war, although I must admit that I fell for it hook and sinker and voted for Bush not once, but twice. Now, I can hardly drive my car and the dollar is shrinking - I'll be damned if I will sit around and watch McCain keep us there for 100 more years. I'm a registered Republican and I give up - enough is enough. The Demos could not possibly screw this up any more than the Republicans have already.

Brilliant strategy. While the pundits debate which issue -- the economy or the war -- will predominate in this election, Barack answers, "both." They are inextricably intertwined. While we destroyed much of Iraq's infrastructure and have poured hundreds of billions of dollars into rebuilding it (much of which has lined the pockets of Bush/Cheney cronies through no-bid contracts) our infrastructure crumbles. The consequences of that neglect are frightening for the future health of our economy. Those who measure the economic cost of the war in terms of dollars spent are only scratching the surface of the actual cost.

Reading and/or watching PBS would do many people here a world of good. Pulling out of Iraq alone will not rectify our precarious economic situation.

Anyone heard of the book "Where Does All the Money Go? (Scott Bittle and Jean Johnson)
If you you missed them on Bill Moyer's Journal (02.15.08), here's a quote:

SCOTT BITTLE: Well there are two practical consequences. One is, nobody really knows how much we're spending, at least not until the end of the year, and we look back and say how much we've spent. The other is it obscures the real impact of the war on terror on the budget. We found lots of people basically think that once we get out of Iraq, the budget problem will go away. And unfortunately, that's just not true. Between 2001 and 2007, we spent about $600 billion on the entire war on terrorism: Iraq, Afghanistan, everything else. Over that same period, we added 2.3 trillion to the debt. So the war is certainly making our financial problems worse. But it's not the sole cause, and it's not the sole answer."

ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT TO KNOW THAT THE IRAQ WAR HAS PUT OUR ECONOMY IN BAD SHAPE. IS THAT THE BEST OBAMA CAN SAY ABOUT THE SITUATION?

By Hermie Rotea

Of course President Bush’s wars not only in Iraq but also in Afghanistan are the reason for our economic woes. The U.S. has spent $1 trillion for his imperial misadventure and billions of dollars more every month.

Foreign debt has also skyrocketed to another $1 trillion. Naturally the country is bleeding financially. We feel that everytime we gas up our cars. The cost is outrageously high. It is tantamount to highway robbery.

The big irony is that this reckless Bush-Cheney administration is financing their wars with borrowed money. From China alone, we owe almost another $1 trillion.

The country is really in a terrible mess. Even the kid in the block knows that. So what Senator Barack Obama said about the war and the economy is an old story. It sounds like a boring broken record.

The Iraq war has reached its 5th year, longer than the Second World War. Four thousand American soldiers have died in vain. Thousands more have been wounded. Many of them are disabled or crazy as a result of their war combat experience.

So there was really nothing major in Obama's declaration on the war and the economy. It is empty and meaningless. Has he lost his signature inspiring oratory?

If Obama wants to capture our attention and admiration, he should expose the truth behind the Bush-Cheney real reason for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is for oil, profit, and no-bid contracts benefiting their business buddies, if not including themselves.

May God have mercy on the United States!

Larger issues such as the NWO, and the North American Union are ignored - - you might do better to talk of non-issues like Obama's reverend or other such shiny objects.

However when the North American Union combines with the European Union, the African Union, and the Asian Union we will be completely owned...back to the weather.

If America wants to keep trying to discern the "truth" of Obama's candidacy through the prism of race, then, the government it gets will be its reward. Yes, if Obama doesn't become president, many people will vindicated that they have stopped someone they suspect as being "unpatriotc". But, we may be left with the need for 300 million jars of Vasoline in the process! In 1983, the late Mayor Harold Washington won one of the most racially devisive mayoral campaigns in history. Yet, he said after it was all over: "This was never about race. This was about "green"! (MONEY) And nothing has changed!

This is the extant power of "race", and its abilty to diffuse the power of the electorate. Because the average uneducated voter, thinks with all their heart, that a "fact", in and of itself, is truth's totality. When a fact is just that- a "truth" that only supports itself! However, it takes many facts to suppport a broad based concept- Who do we need to run the country right now, at this point in time? There are three people running for president. One person wants to continue what has gone on for the last eight years, letting the plutocrats continue to reap profits, which are private. But the risks will be at your expense, which are "socialized"! Oh, by the way, he(the alpha male) will keep us safe, and in fear! Another person wants to win so badly, that they would rather have the plutocrats win if she can't! Is this what we want? The African-American candidate? Well, despite the compeling "idea" that he just may represent, the perfect opportunity for this country to actually become an advanced civilization, so many people seem to be under the impression that Jeremiah Wright is his running mate!

The reliablity of facts may be comforting for the two dimensional thinker. However, facts are only concepts that we use to negotiate our own ignorance, for truth, cannot exist in the mind, nor can it be negotiated!

Sen. Obama is absolutely correct! Anyone with half a brain should be able to realize that , but apparently some don't even have that after having read some of the comments here. About the security breach, this is typical of what type of administration that we have in this country. In my opiniion, right-wing thugs have taken this country over and if a presidential candidate's office has been broken in to, not once but 3 TIMES, then we all are vulnerable. Impeachment should not be taken off the table and criminal charges shouldn't be either.

Actually, we could have bought Iraq, lock stock and barrels, made is the 51st state and not fired a shot. However, Halliburton, Bechtel, and the arms industry wouldn't have made any money, so that plan sucks. Back to the drawing board.

Or we could have improved our education system so that our children are better equipped to compete in a global economy.
