It's all good news for fans of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie . They gave a lot of money away in 2006, it's all documented, and none of it went to any cult religions or crazy organizations.

According to the first federal filing for the Jolie Pitt Foundation, the couple put over $8 million into their tax free instrument. Pitt put in $4,402,317. Jolie donated $4,123,613.

So you see, all that talk about them making charitable donations? It was true after all. What a relief. For once, there's a happy ending.

Their first years' donations totaled a whopping 2,367,935. The biggest amounts were $1 million apiece to Doctors Without Borders (International Division) and to Global AIDS Alliance.

The smaller grants went to Namibia Red Cross Action Program ($137,935) which is nice since the couple caused chaos there when camped out during the birth of baby Shiloh; $100,000 to the Daniel Pearl Foundation (the couple made the movie "A Mighty Heart" about Pearl, this was a sop to his widow, Marianne, who Jolie played); another $100,000 to Global Green USA and to the Epidermolysis Bulloma Medical Research Foundation, $5,000 each to two orphanages visited by Jolie, and $20,000 to an art park in Los Angeles.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, in the most positive of ways, illustrate what noblesse oblige should truly mean.

Bravo for them. They give away THEIR money and money DONATED, as it should be.

Now contrast that to Liberals who give away OTHER PEOPLES MONEY then try to take credit for being compassionate. And even having the audacity to condemn the people they took the money from for complaining they got their pockets picked by Liberals.

Doubt this will get past the HP Censors #103

I don't follow Hollywood stars but I am well aware of Angelina's and Brad's contributions both

through their donations and their time.

How many here complaining about this couple do any volunteer work themselves?

Learn to at least give credit when it is deserved.

Kudos to them! Thank you for your efforts and support.

What the hell is the beef? They don't have to give away anything if they don't want to. They have a tribe to take care of anyway. Is anyone looking into Anistion's charity giving? That's why some of you LOSERS are mad at them. He dumped the boring snob who thought her s didn't stink and got with hornet who rings his bells and bears his babies. Stop living thru celebs and get a life.

Do you think that these crazy Pitt-Jolie comments are coming from the Jennifer Aniston fans who have such a small life that they feed off of stars soap opera's, go to websites and spend hours debating how Jolie is a homewrecker and poor Jennifer?
It is just too weird.

Some of these comments are ridiculous. There must be some really sad, envious or just plain cynical people out there.

I don't care HOW MUCH they made or what percentage of their overall income this was. It's still a huge amount to give. And as noted by some other commentors, they have also given an extraordinary amount of their time to these causes- time that could have been spent making more money- so that should count too.

G-d bless them for what they are doing.

I don't either, kellygrrrl. Are they just jealous? One poster even derides them because they carry their small children! These people are seriously ill. I would hate to be so cynical.

$8 million is what percentage of their entire combined income? I'm not saying it isn't nice of them to give to charity--really, good for them, but this might be the equivalent of most of us giving a few hundred bucks. Don't know about you guys, but I DID give a few hundred bucks to charity last year, and don't expect to get much publicity for it.

Did you just mail a couple of checks off or did you travel the globe calling attention to the plight of the less fortunate? Did you send a check to help those in New Orleans made homeless by the levee failures or did you move your family to New Orleans and use your celebrity status to raise money for housing for the homeless here along with donating your time, energy and your own money to help the people of the 9th ward? Did you adopt 3 orphans from impoverished countries in spite of the fact that you are perfectly capable of having your own kids?

Kudos to you for giving "a few hundred bucks to charity" but the Jolie-Pitts have given more than their money - they've given their time and energy and names to good causes. And, the "publicity" they get will inspire others to give to those same needy causes and draw attention to those causes. At some point, when a star does good things, isn't the "publicity" they get DESERVING?

reedmaker, do you honestly believe they were looking for publicity about this? Only Oprah does that! The two are honest humanitarians and give to others on a daily basis without expecting a big headline to give themselves an ego boost.

Your income must be really, really low reedmaker. If Angelina and Brad earned 80 million dollars in 2006 I would be really shocked. AJ did two films --one at a substantially reduced salary and Brad did one that he wasn't paid anything much for but his expenses (it was filmed entirely in LA and Las Vegas) as he had back end participation. So as far as I can tell the J-P's had a huge sum going out (birth in Africa, renting whole compound (resort & restaurant), security, private planes, $600k in donations, home expansion & etc.) versus very little in salary. They both did some ad work. So if they earned $20 million that year and had investment income of $20 million they gave 20% of their combined income to their foundation. That is only one donation. They may also donate as individuals to other charities and through their trusts and production companies. Your few hundred is great but it hopefully wasn't 20% of your annual income.

Another example would be if Rush Limbaugh gave 20% of his income he would have given about 15 million dollars last year -- ya' think?

Pay attention America, this is how we should be behaving.

Good for them, not only do they give money, they give of their time and talent as well. The way the media scrutinize this couple you will think they are running for a public office. They could just keep their millions and just sun tan and do yoga all day long like a lot of celebrities. $8m in 2006 is a lot of money considering that Jolie only did A Mighty Heart movie that year and she was paid $1m dollars because she did more for the love of Marianne than for the money.

This is a couple that I can sure get behind, as cynical as I am, they are the real deal.

Everyone says that she gives about a third of her income to charity so let's figure this out right now. They have a combined income of over $150 million. They each make about $15 million every time they make a movie and that doesn't include all their endorsement deals and homes - I've actually heard it's around $150 million. So if they give about 5% of their income to charity. That is less than most accountants suggest you give to charity for tax purposes.

And now everyone can say I "hate" them and I'm just angry because I want to be them and so on...

How much of your income did YOU donate to charity in 2006?

Angelina Jolie could give your kid one of her kidneys and you'd say she just did it for the publicity.

At least your last line revealed your real motives.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:15 PM on 03/21/2008

So what you're saying is only people who give lots of money to charity are allowed to cirticize them? I'm not giving interviews and telling people how important charity is to me - I'm not getting any publicity for it. I believe donating to charity should be anonymous anyway because then people do it because they really want to not for some narcissistic attempt at getting people to admire them.

And don't tell me they're helping anyone by telling people that there are refugees all over the world - everyone knows that already and nobody actually donates money because they say "I just read an interview with a celebrity and I found out people are suffering in Darfur! I didn't know that! I'm going to donate money now!"

Get your facts right. She got paid a million dollars for A Mighty Heart and that was the only movie she did in 2006. She single handedly funds the Maddox Jolie Pitt foundation in Cambodia on behalf of her son, a foundation that takes care of about 6000 villagers, building schools and hospital as part of the millennium project. She donates huge sums to UNHCR that are not made public and the funds for unaccompanied minors. Brad just gave $5m to his MIR foundation and used his connection to bring together some of the best architects in the world to help rebuild New Orleans. What more do you want from them. They are not your government, they are citizens just us.

How about railing on the do nothing celebrities to do a little bit for humanity instead of bashing the ones who are already doing something.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:26 PM on 03/21/2008

I suggest you find out more information about the charity named after Maddox in Cambodia because I read that nothing much was done with it after people took pictures of her there. People who have been there said it's not effective or doing much of anything. And how do you know she donates HUGE sums to a charity if she doesn't make it public? Have you seen a copy of the check she sent?

The reason I'm more critical of them than other celebrities is because they obviously want the publicity and they clearly want to project a certain image to the public - I'm surprised that her children even know how to walk because she insists on carrying them everywhere so we only see pictures of her holding them. And they each have their own nanny but we never see pictures of them - other celebrities don't "hide" the nannies so people won't see them.

It helps to be informed when you share your opinions (or make assertions), especially about other people and their reputation. In your "calculations," are you working from their income statements? Do you understad the business structure they've set up? Are you considering the percentages of income that go to agents & attorneys, as well as other business expenses? It's documented in the press that they don't each make $15m for every movie and most entertainers set up separate business entities and aren't paid directly.

The types of cynical and negative comments that are lobbed at people doing good work are absurd; and they say so much more about the people making them than those being criticized. We should be praising and encouraging good deeds, not ripping them apart and finding fault with them (particular where there isn't evidence of any).

And to those saying that this is a publicity stunt... This information about their philanthrophy is derived from the foundation's federal filings, which are publicly available (even on the Web) -- not from their publicist.

We'll get farther by exercising reason and cultivating good karma...

HOGWASH! nicoleanonymous is lying again. I very much doubt that Brad and Angelina had an annual income of $150 million -especially in 2006. Brad may come close to $50 million in income a year -- but Angelina's NET WORTH has never been set at more than $120 million. That woud generate interest income of a substantial sum ($3-6 million) but there is no way to substantiate that and it seems highly unlikely given AJ's expenses and her stated plan to give a third, spend a third and save a third. Also AJ said she gave a third of her salary IIRC -- not her income. If Oprah did that she would have given about $70 million in 2007 -- I don't think so.

Angelina did 2 films in 2006 ($10 million) and earned about $3 million from St. John. She has 15% taken off the top, at least, for her manager and her ad agent. So of the remaining 11.9 million a third is roughly $4 million. Also, this is just their joint foundation. Brad and Angelina may donate in other ways -- we all ready know the time they have given for various humanitarian works -- they most likely give as individuals and through trusts they have established and their individual production companies. This "investigation" was done of the J-P Foundation tax year 2006 -- not 2007. In 2007 Brad said that $5 million he pledged for www.makeitrightnola.org came from J-P Foundation.

Angelina (and now Brad) has typically not talked about he individual donations unless she wanted to draw attention to a situation. You have no idea what she gives and where.
