DNC: Taxpayers Picked Up Tab For McCain's London Fundraiser

CNN has reported that John McCain's campaign is reimbursing the government $3,000 for the cost of the political portion of his taxpayer-funded trip to Europe and the Middle East. Leaving aside the question of how much the rest of the trip was "political," McCain's reimbursement is reportedly meant to cover airfare, hotel and the cost of a car to his London fundraiser. According to DNC General Counsel Joe Sandler, that falls far short of the amount McCain is required to reimburse.

Please see the following quote from Mr. Sandler:

"The 2007 ethics reform law and the regulations implementing it require that when a candidate mixes campaign and official travel when using a government plane, the campaign travelers must reimburse the government for the full cost of an equivalent round trip charter flight. Reasonable estimates place the cost of a one-way charter flight from Washington to London at between $20,000 and $56,000. As a result, McCain's stated intention to reimburse the federal government $3,000 almost certainly falls far short of what the law requires."

KEY FACTS:

FLIGHT HOURS: Approximately SEVEN

FLIGHT LENGTH: 3,195 nautical miles [http://www.convertunits.com/distance/from/DCA/to/London]

LONG-DISTANCE CHARTER AIRCRAFT TYPICAL HOURLY RATES: $3000-$8000/hour [Source: http://www.airbrokernet.com/Charter_Aircraft_Rates.htm, accessed 3/20/08]

ESTIMATED TOTAL COSTS FOR LONDON TO WASHINGTON CHARTER AIRCRAFT (ONE-WAY): $21,000-$56,000 [Source: http://www.airbrokernet.com/Charter_Aircraft_Rates.htm, accessed 3/20/08]

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:

Under the FEC rules, if McCain conducted ANY campaign activity in London, his campaign would have to pay for the ENTIRE roundtrip airfare for himself and anyone accompanying on that trip, not just a portion. [FEC regulations, 11 C.F.R. §106.3(b)(2) & (3)]

While prior FEC rules allowed airfare to be calculated on the basis of first-class equivalent fare, the new ethics law passed by Congress last summer (Honest Leadership and Open Government Act) amended the Federal Election Campaign Act to provide that a federal candidate cannot use campaign funds to pay for travel on a non-commercial aircraft unless the candidate pays the pro rata share of the normal and usual charter fare for a comparable plane of comparable size, divided by the number of candidates on the flight. [Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007, section 601(a), adding new 2 U.S.C.§439a(c)(1)(B) to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 as amended]

According to UK press reports, McCain picked up about USD 280,000 from US citizens in London during his fundraiser, so he can afford to pay the full cost of the travel. He met both Labour's Gordon Brown and Conservative hopeful David Cameron.

These are extracts from The Times:

"John McCain looks older than his 71 years and every bit as tired as he should be, having just dragged his campaign from the grave to achieve an improbable victory over half a dozen younger rivals for the Republican nomination.

In his London hotel room, without the thick TV make-up that often masks the cancer scars on his face, he seems pale " utterly exhausted " almost frail. He must now prepare for a November general election against either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, bidding to make history as a black or female president.

Mr McCain"s own place in the record books, should he prevail, will be as the oldest president to begin a first term " a prospect which apparently alarms more voters than the race or gender of his prospective Democratic opponents."

"No sooner has the interview begun than his wife, Cindy, calls to ask when he will be ready for dinner. "I"ll let you know when I"m on my way," he says apologetically. They are planning a spot of tourism. He wants to go on the London Eye " "it will be my third time" " and the Churchill war rooms, but Mrs McCain is intent on taking him shopping.

This promises to give him some first hand experience of how the palsied state of the dollar makes such retail adventures for Americans visiting London prohibitively expensive. "I"m sure my wife and children will make a substantial contribution to your ailing economy," he says grimly. "

On the whole, UK voters do not like geriatrics with trophy wives in politics. The phrase "no fool like an old fool" was often mentioned.

Taxpayers, well speaking of tax payers, the employed American citizen isn't suppose to be paying any income tax in the first place. An non-apportioned tax, the corporations are suppose to be paying income tax on earnings but instead they're getting the tax breaks and we're getting screwed. Don't believe me then see for yourself.

Watch the whole thing when you have time but at least fast forward to 1:07:20 thru to at least 1:22:00

Am still stuck on the "FUND RAISER" notation in regards to a LONDON visit...uh, FUND RAISER FOR WHO ? WHAT ? Thought NO FOREIGN money allowed for US polticals ...guess am wrong but really thought it was against the "laws" of the land here !!!
Course, funding Presidential Libraries by FOREIGN DONORS , that is considered acceptable and the Bush folks and CLINTON folks are well aware of that...goes for funding foundations as well, allows them to draw magnificent salaries to help them after serving in public office at those pitiful govt. salaries plus lifetime benefits and etc....THESE FOLKS ARE SO OUT OF TOUCH WITH REGULR ORDINARY CITIZENS and answers why they evidently that they seem incapable of tending to OUR GREATER COMMON GOOD !!!

Oh - this picture is pitiful....

This is not a well man.... He has earned his retirement.

He forgave George Bush for trashing his wife, himself and his daughter.

It may be his turn, but he is not able to answer the call.

I want a tax rebate! ....or equal time and transportation to London to speak my mind as an American tax payer. I'd also like to see The Queen while I'm there; is it still playing?

Any plans of buying off his carbon offsets for that trip which amounted to a lot of hot air? In retrospect, it is humorous that he said that Al Queda will be dancing in the streets if the democrats won the presidency - he has a hard time identifying who or what Al Queda is. I hardly doubt that those who are currently being paid by the Bush Administration will be thrilled when both their importance and influence on the world stage disappears along with their funding when Obama calls the White House home.

I said it yesterday when McBush was stuttering and stamering on about how Iran was training Al Quieda in Iraq. The news kept saying this was a "congressional delegation", bullshit, pardon my french. This was nothing more then a campaign photo op on our dime. What's McBush gonna do, keep Lindsay and Lie-berman around night and day to tug on his coat tails and correct his mistakes?
Pathetic isn't it.

It's remarkable to me at least that no one seems to remark on the humanness of each of the candidates. It strikes me as a very good measure of how they will stand or fall during this primary season and what we can expect if our candidate wins. McCain is out of his league, he is simply not presidential, HRC wants to run a political race and Obama seems to me to be the only one interested in the welfare of the actual people who matter - the voters.

I agree that Obama is "interested in the welfare of the actual people who matter -- the voters", but he is "not the only one" -- there is also a candidate of principle (for which he is being ignored or punished), and that is Ron Paul.
