Fox's Chris Wallace Criticizes Own Network For "Two Hours Of Obama Bashing"

Update: Here is the audio of Chris Wallace calling into Brian Kilmeade's radio show later that morning where they talk about the incident and Wallace makes a joke about the Fox News executives. Ha. Fuller description below; link is here.

What an interesting morning on "Fox & Friends" today — not only did you have "Fox News Sunday" anchor (and general Fox heavy) Chris Wallace upbraiding the morning trio for engaging in "two hours of Obama-bashing" over Barack Obama's comment that his grandmother, whom he described in his race speech as admitting to crossing the street when she saw a black person and sometimes making race-related remarks that made him "cringe", was a "typical white person." Wallace chided hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Gretchen Carlson for focusing on those three words and not providing the context for Obama's remark, which placed it in a broader context of historical race-relations and the fears and prejudices associated with them that lingered in society. "I love you guys, but I want to take you to task respectfully if I may," said Wallace, who ignored Doocy's jokey toss relating to what Wallace's bathroom might look like. Wallace said he'd been watching the show all morning and had been disappointed with what he'd seen: "It seems to me that two hours of Obama bashing on this 'typical white person' remark is somewhat excessive." Wallace pulled out the entire quote, literally pulling out a newspaper to read it on air:

"But she is a typical white person who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, there's a reaction that's been bred into our experiences that don't go away, and that sometimes come out in the wrong way, and that's just the nature of race in our society."

Doocy doth protested, claiming that they had indeed read the entire quote, but Wallace pooh-poohed that claim, saying that on a day when there was other news about the endorsement from Bill Richardson and the Obama passport security breach, there were other things to discuss. Watch Wallace take them to task below — and then read on to examine the remark had actually been presented:

Part Two: Was Wallace being fair, or was Doocy right in claiming that they had presented the phrase in context? Judging from the clip below, both — thanks to Brian Kilmeade, who was the only person who seemed to care that Obama's quote was actually put into the context of both his larger comments and the framework of discussing race in society, urging his co-anchors to "listen to [Obama's] intent." It was Kilmeade who piped up with the rest of the quote after the radio interview clip played and cut off right after Obama said "typical white person," and it was Doocy who dismissed that context and kept the focus on those three words, and whether the audience found them offensive, holding up a copy of the NY Daily News with those words across the page — as all the while they were on a chyron at the bottom of the screen. Kilmeade argued strenuously for nuance and context, and for that he ought to be given his due (and we're not sure if his walking off the set when Doocy jokingly called him a "typical sports anchor" was partially in real exasperation) — but either way, it's pretty clear from the clip below how Wallace arrived at his impression. Kudos to both Wallace and Kilmeade for speaking out and demanding that a larger sense of context and understanding be brought to bear on the situation. Video of the exchange below, followed by a screengrab of Doocy and the chyron mentioned, and Doocy and the paper.

Update: Johnny Dollar has audio of Wallace calling into Kilmeade's radio show — Kilmeade talking about the divergent opinions on this, and noted, interestingly that he was "honored that we had a real conversation on the air rather than off the air." Kilmeade and Wallace agreed with each other about the content of the show, and then there was a funny moment: Wallace asked, "How mad is Doocy at me?" and Kilmeade said, "He's mad. I'll be honesty, he's really mad," but then said that, hey, it was healthy to "mix it up once in a while." Kilmeade said he was glad Wallace spoke up even though "I'm in a minority on our show" — to which Wallace added: "And some of the executives." Oh, zing!

Wallace also said that he didn't agree that the Democratic nomination was over, because the superdelegates were still a wild card. Also a funny moment where Kilmeade said that he'd never be on Wallace's show, and Wallace said, "Well, that's true." Ha.

Also, one other note: Gretchen Carlson was smiling through Wallace's criticism, which seems sort of inappropriate. But is apparently just par for the couse with her.

Even for Fox, Doushey and Carlson are the bottom of the barrel. I watch Fox and Friends sometimes but when Gretchen starts yammering, I usually switch the channel. She reminds me of every PTA mom of friends I had in highschool who had a thin veneer of gentility on the outside but were simply vile on the inside and would snap at the least provocation.

Funny at how quickly Ms. Carlson accepted a generalization about generations: "that might be true" when, earlier, she argued against any generalizations. What is generally held in Social Psychology is that some generalizations help us to understand large groups of people but should never lead to assumptions about individual members of those groups. When Obama spoke of Rev. Wright as a member of a generation who had seen Jim Crow and Bull Conners, he spoke from knowledge of the man. When he spoke of his grandmother he spoke only in a generational context using some unfortunate word. Data is that many people are suspicious of lone black males (the grab my wallet or hold the purse closer effect) including Jesse Jackson.

I never watch Fox so this was the first time I saw these hosts. What repugnant people! Gretchen looks like one of those overtanned, aging tennis broads at the country club. If there ever were a Republican "look," that would be it.

Despite their brand-loyalty, there are few at Faux who are unaware that their network is a laughing stock. There may be more of these minor "defections" as the season goes on, and more of them start to seriously worry about their post-Boy-George career prospects.

I find it ironic that Obama would refer to his grandmother as a "typical white person" after he had confessed to the same concerns in his book:

-- Barack Obama from 'Dreams of My Father',
"When his grandmother wants a ride to work because the day before, while awaiting the bus, she was threatened by a black panhandler, he is outraged -- at his grandparents. . . Later, when he moves to the South Side of Chicago in 1984, he eventually discovers that, like his grandmother, he"s sometimes scared of black males on the street, too."

And the concerns are shared by others:

-- The Reverend Jesse Jackson, as quoted in US News, 3/10/96,
"There is nothing more painful to me ... than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved. "

The point being, if Jesse, Barack and his grandmother all admit to stereotyping in this case, why didn't Barack simply say "typical person".

Fox is trash. Anyone who can bear to sit through that mindless hate filled garbage is an uneducated moron or a masochist. Murdoch has virtually destroyed real media worldwide in his singular quest for power and money. Nothing is too low for Murdoch who believes that news is not about journalism, but sensationalism. His desire to dumb down the masses and cater to the most base of human instincts is simply so he can acquire more power and money. Thanks Bill, for the Telecommunications act of 1996, which gave us FOX and too much Murdoch. Deregulation has been a raving success for MURDOCH, GE, WESTINGHOUSE, VIACOM, DISNEY AND TIME WARNER. Corporate controlled media has never looked so good.

BeyondGoodandEvil:

Aw gee what happened? You used to love FOX when they were busy promoting Obama and trashing Hillary. At that time you praised them didn't you? Now that the TRUTH is surfacing about Obama - you suddenly don't love them anymore? What's wrong with airing the truth? I thought that was the spirit of what Obama was supposed to be about. The truth is the truth and must be heard.
The other networks should take note and do the same!

Hey, BeyondGoodAndEvil, that's my brother-in-law you're talking about! He watches Faux Noise 24/7, and laughs mindlessly on que.

He only knows what he's supposed to know, when he's supposed to know it, like a good programmed idiot. Did I say that out loud? Yes, and I'll say it again. He now has changed his mind about global warming, from the old party line to the new party line. He no longer believes that global warming doesn't exist. Now he believes that it does, but that it has less than nothing to do with us pelt-less apes pumping trillions of tons of CO2 into the atmo.

Someday soon Faux will "discover" that it "doesn't matter" whether it's due to us or not, but that it's a good thing it is getting warmer, because we need longer growing seasons. Then, my brother-in-law will believe that as well, because he's a propaganda baby.

This week Fox has been and still are on the Obama bashing streak .
It's so bad that some of my co-workers have been saying the same thing,
they just have tune Fox off.
They have noted some of these people sound uneducated even if it's not the case.
What is going on over there these days?
Even Greta that does very little politic is on Obama bashing.
No matter who you support there is a limit on the rant.
Now we see the true picture at Fox
Hannity is an idiot, O'Reilly is a fraud, and the rest just follow.

SARAHP10:

Showing Obama's 20 year relationship with Rev. Wright and seriously questioning Obama's judgment over choosing an outright undeniable anti white racist as his mentor; is not 'bashing Obama. And the Rev. Wright's anti American rant being questioned is also not bashing Obama.
And being shocked at Obama's "Typical White" comment is also not bashing him.
Questioning his honesty over the NAFTA lie, is also not bashing him, nor is his denial (another lite) about knowing Rezko (and he only admitted it when he got caught in the denial - or lie).

So who is the fraud here?

Obama's ongoing OUTING as a person who hangs out with divisive hate-mongering people (Pastor Wright, Farrakhan), coupled with his own stereotyping, is REAL NEWS. Doocy was correct and Kilmeade was a child, acting like your garden variety liberal, by wallking off the set. Chris Wallace was wrong as well: "typical white person" is real news coming out of the mouth of the "post racial" candidate (how phony a distinction is that!).

Kudos to Doocy and Fox News in general: thank god for Fox news --they are and have been the only fair news organization for many years now, by very, very far.

One of the best games on Huffpost nowadays is guessing whether the Obama hater is a rabid right winger or a Clintonista. The rhetoric can be so similar it sometimes takes some pretty subtle Kremlinology to decipher. Unfortunately splinteredglass took all the fun out of this one with some pretty obvious signs that his/her hatred of Barack is of the slightly less disgusting right wing variety.

The only ones using the words Obama hater... are Obama supporters. The hate filled Rev. Just like the 'tone' of Obama supporter posts - all over the net.

My goodness, it's thoughts and ignorant words like yours that breed hatred and discontent. Also, you must be wearing dark-tinted glasses and ear plugs. FOXNEWSTV is the most biased, unfair and stupid network anywhere. From Sean Hannity to Bill O'Reilly and the early morning biascons, it is a wreck of a network. But, hey...we need stupidity in the world so that we can appreciate goodness, honesty and fairplay. Kudos to Wallace, Kilmeade and commentators like them.
The really fair, uptodate network, with some great hosts and commentators is MSNBC. Hey, I know how the term "crazy like a fox" originated...FAUXNEWSTV....

hey Trill:

Where is FOX being unfair? Where are they being biased? The tapes they are airing are absolute news that must be reported and there is not one untruth in them... because the racist anti American preachings are coming straight from Obama's mentor's mouth! The same mentor Obama has leaned on for guidance for the past 20 years. Maybe that's where he was indoctrinated into what "Typical White" people are all about.

You need to check your facts before you attack someone. Obama never hung out with Farrakhan. Even Farrakhan has said that.

Please stop playing the "I have it so worse than everyone else because I was born white!" race card. It makes white people sound really stupid.

It's not entirely clear to me as to why Kilmeade walked off (was it in response to being called a typical sports anchor?), but if it was in response to the incessant audience-baiting of the other two who did seem to want to stir up ugly emotions and pick a race-based fight based upon Obama's unfortunate choice of words (which was clearly NOT Obama's intent), then maybe, just maybe, it is possible to find some honor and integrity in the most unexpected of places.

If there's one guy I can't stomach though, it's that Steve Dou (Nah, it's too easy!) Doocy.

Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, and Gretchen Carlson are the 3 Stooges of Morning News. This was a no-brainer for the calculating & manipulating Chris Wallace. He makes it look like Fox has some decency & credibility while the hardcore wingnuts write nasty emails about him while defending those three clowns. This is probably the best media PR stunt of the week (or month)!

I know, Did47. It's truly sickening. Let's not forget that MSNBC/NBC is owned by GE. They ain't just appliances anymore. They have their hands in everything, not the least of which are Big Oil, Big Pharma, and maybe most importantly, BIG ARMS - 'defense' contracts. They want status quo which is more/continued wars for more profiteering, which either McCain or Clinton will ensure. Oh, and let's remember that Rupert Murdock held a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton.

And as for CNN, well, they are none other than Clinton NOISE Network. I thought Anderson Cooper hit a new low yesterday when he said to the Obama spokesperson that they (Obama camp) were pushing the story to distract from Rev Wright.

The above poster's remarks are 100% correct. I applaud Fox news,( for the first time in my life) for trying to actually report the news in a fair and balanced manner. It is about time we had a little Obama bashing, it is long over do. As for the to Dough Boys ( Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann) on MSNBC, they have the most biased Anti Clinton rethoric on all of television. Those two losers need to be given a vacation for a good long time, ( perhaps until after teh election) America can no longer trust them. Thank you Fox news.

Sorry, but this token protest doesn't buy Kilmeade and Wallace a dispensation. Both of them forget the stakes involved, because it's just a job to them, and they can't help but think of the after-Bush job crunch, for Right-Wing punditaries. They are just doing what Condi Rice started doing a couple of years ago -- distancing themselves from the smelliest parts of the NeoCon shltpile.

If they truly had some redeeming feelings, they wouldn't be going back on the air at such a propaganda outlet. But tune in tomorrow, and there they'll be, kissing and making up.

Beg to differ ShaunM:

FOX news is finally reestablishing some credibility as an unbiased network. Who would have thought that day would come. Looks like they didn't want to have anymore egg on their faces - as Obama is finally being scrutinized and it's impossible to keep hiding the truth.

How can you refer to this minor leg-twitch as "reestablishing some credibility?" They never had any, and they never CAN have any, as long as the same people own them.

As to Obama "finally being scrutinized," don't make me laugh. It's another smear in a long long long campaign of smears. It doesn't hold up at all. All you have to do is look at the NeoCon worship factories who put out even more hateful things in the same time frame.
