Obama Has Clear Money Advantage

WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton lived hand to mouth during the rush of presidential primaries while Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama outspent her and put money in the bank.

New Federal Election Commission reports show Obama raised at a clip of nearly $2 million a day in February, an open spigot of money that left him with $30 million in the bank for March.

Clinton had her best fundraising month as well, at $34.5 million. But counting her debts to vendors she ended with a net $3 million. And that's not factoring the $5 million she lent her campaign and has not paid back.

The current respite between primaries _ the next one is April 22 in Pennsylvania _ may cut back on some of the spending. It also denies the two campaigns the head-to-head contests that drive fundraising.

"Fundraising has always been event-driven," said Donald Fowler, a former Democratic National Committee chairman. "The American people just don't sit around trying to think up ways of giving up money. Something has to draw attention to the need."

Fowler, a superdelegate who has endorsed Clinton, conceded that Obama has a network that is better able to raise money quickly. But Obama himself played down his March fundraising on Friday.

"February was pretty exceptional," Obama told reporters in Oregon, adding that the campaign surprised even itself with the level of Internet fundraising. "I don't think we would expect to sustain that pace because we don't have a primary every week."

But even though he outspent Clinton 2-to-1 heading into the March 4 contests in Texas and Ohio, he lost both those primaries, though he held the edge in a Texas caucus held the same day. Clinton also won the Rhode Island primary that day. Obama's only clear victory was in Vermont.

"The Obama campaign spent gobs of money leading up to March 4th and we were vastly outspent in every state and the result was three big wins out of four for Senator Clinton," said Clinton spokesman Jay Carson.

Still, Obama's fundraising prowess has made states that initially seemed to heavily favor Clinton, like Texas, more competitive.

On Friday, a month before the primary in Pennsylvania, Obama launched three ads in the state, two of them brand new. One is a 60-second commercial that is mostly biographical; the other two are 30-second spots that portray Obama as a politician who fights special interests and who works in a bipartisan way. He trails Clinton in polls conducted in Pennsylvania.

In a bit of good financial news for Clinton, she made inroads in February with small donors, a group that has mostly flocked to Obama. Clinton raised half of her money _ $17 million _ in contributions of $200 or less, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Campaign Finance Institute. Obama tapped those donors, many of whom give through the Internet, for $30.5 million.

The protracted Democratic contest has been good for Sen. John McCain, who has locked up the Republican nomination. McCain raised only $11 million in February, a fifth of Obama's total and a third of Clinton's.

McCain has picked up his fundraising pace for March, and his advisers say that as long as Obama and Clinton are criticizing each other McCain has a relatively open path to introduce himself to a broader national electorate.

"Right now the two of them are running in individual states against each other, not against John McCain," said McCain senior adviser Charlie Black.

The disparity in fundraising between the Democratic candidates and McCain is also drawing attention to the roles that the national political parties could play in the contest. On that front, the Republicans hold a clear advantage now.

The Republican National Committee reported $25 million cash on hand at the end of February compared to about $4.5 million, after debts, for the Democratic National Committee.

"The imbalance between the DNC and the RNC is a little more lopsided that it should be, than you would like it to be," Fowler said. "But when the crunch comes they'll have plenty of money."

McCain reported $8 million cash on hand _ $3 million of which is for the general election. At month's end, McCain still owed $3 million on a loan, but he paid that off this week, aides said.

Wealthier contributors to all three presidential candidates have donated for both the primary and general elections, doubling their allowable giving from $2,300 to $4,600. But the general election money can only be used in the fall. Whoever loses the nomination would have to return that money to the donors. Clinton has been the most aggressive at raising general election money, with nearly $22 million in the bank. Obama has $8 million set aside for the fall.

Obama, as the delegate and money leader in the race, has found himself staving off both Clinton and McCain in recent weeks. His campaign underscored the challenge in a fundraising appeal Thursday.

"No one could have imagined it would go on this long, or that we'd have to fight this battle on two fronts at the same time," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an e-mail to potential donors. "We've got to take on both Senator Clinton and Senator McCain at the same time."

In a testament to the financial heft behind the Democrats, Obama and Clinton together spent more in a month than McCain has for the entire yearlong campaign.

McCain has now spent $58.4 million in his primary bid, surpassing the $50 million limit he would have faced if he participated in the public financing system he had been certified to join. McCain has decided not to accept the public matching funds, but the FEC wants him to assure regulators that he did not use the promise of public money as collateral for the loan he obtained late last year. Bank and campaign lawyers have said McCain did not.

While eschewing public funds for the primary, McCain has called on Obama to accept public financing with him for the fall campaign. Such a step would limit both candidates to about $85 million to be spent from September to Election Day in November. Obama has hedged, setting several conditions before he would consider taking public money. Few Democrats believe Obama should abandon his prodigious fundraising, which could generate far more than the public funding would permit.

McCain is keeping his options open. Last month he filed documents to create a "compliance fund" _ an account used by publicly financed candidates so they can accept private donations to cover legal expenses and other exempted costs.

Without giving so much as an instant to think about who has which amount, the fact that it seems to matter more than the content of their ideas is most disturbing. American politics, are they that cynical? Oscar Wilde characterized a cynic as someone who knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing...and so it would seem. Where are either of the candidates when it comes to ending this ridiculous open revolving door of corruption, influence and greed for power that is incarnate in the current system of campaign funding? All crickets, all the time.

Regardless of the Obama Bashers rhetoric that is spewed day and night and 24/7. The people are still willing to put their money were their mouths are and consistantly send money to Obama's campaing in record amounts. and that shows that YOU CAN FOOL SOME OF THE PEOPLE, BUT NOT ALL OF THE TIME, And most people are just fed up and tired of being lied to and played like a fiddles, by the Greed Gremlins, while the economy goes down the drain and jobs are being lost like needles in a haystack and seeing their country being divided and stripped like husk from a ear of corn. while Greed Gremlins, waste and throw money around like an automated seed spreader, while the middle class are quickly becoming like poor peasants, trying to hold on to their country and the hope of turning it around from going over into the prescipece of doom and dispair. While miscreants gleefully scheme and connive to make sure it happens, but Obama says, NOT ON MY WATCH!

it is exceptionally refreshing to have a candidate

who is truly

of the people, by the people, for the people.

The Obama campaign has been financed by The People. What a great sign for America.

Are you serrious, give me a break, he might have some contributions by the people but that is a select few. I cannot believe this nation wants another president who is basically bozo the clown, the so called people voted Bush who had little or no experience and our nation ended up in a war for OIL, Bill Clinton might have lied but not one US Citizen Died from those lies, what can Bush say, I lied and cost thousands of lives, what a great thing to be remembered by. Lets see Obama has been in politics for less than 6 years and he has all the answers, he is like a baby robbin, all mouth and full of sh-t. He talks a great talk but has absolutely no plans to get there. He is the first truely African-American Snake oil Salesman and all those who fall for his crap are stupider than he is. He claims he voted against the war in Iraq, well at the last count I had practically every national figure running for re-election voted against it, as I recall it is a majority rule vote, and as a collective whole the Congress and Senators voted to go to war and support the Bush Wacker. Like the votes or not they all share responibility for this war and either for or against he is a part of this war due to is assocition. Is he a people man or candidate, I think not.

If you really truely want to know what the Clinton Presidency was about think of the jobless rate that was lowest in over 10 years, because of Bill Clinton employeers were required to provide retirment and health care, health care thanks to Bush Admin. has been decreased and cost more than at any other time for employees and less cost for employeers. The working class saw a prosperous 8 years and in the past 8 years under Bush the working class has lost pace with inflation. Clinton never had to resort to bombs and tanks to make a point, he had the courage to use diplomacy something either Bush Admin. has no clue about.

As a former VET of the Vietnam war I would follow H. Clinton into war if asked to, Obama would lead me to my death under lies and false hopes, and John McCain, well all he is about is war and more war. So if its is war and more Ameican Deaths you want then vote for BOZO 1 or BOZO 2.

Obama will tell you what you want to hear not what you need to hear, the truth is never very pleasent to hear and sometimes causes us to reflect on what is important, a pretty speaker telling lies and half truths or basically blowing smoke is what you get with Obama.

kellygrrrl states that Obama's campaign has been financed by "The People".

That seems like way too much money for just one month. So, who are "The People" who donated about $55 Million to Obama in one month?

Let's look at his support groups --

Could it be mostly from his youthful supporters? I don't think so. Based on news accounts the majority of these individuals [18 - 29 yrs old] are college students -- most of whom are still largely dependent on their parents for support.

Could it be mostly from his wealthy, intellectual white male supporters? That's a daunting amount of money even for this group.

Could it be mostly from African-Americans? This seems plausible because it includes black churches, and many wealthy individuals -- movie stars like Will Smith, TV stars like Oprah, etc.

On the other hand, what do we know about his corporate donors? How much of Obama's campaign support is not from "The People"?

I simply can't find anything that Obama has really done. Everything that he states is small in comparison to all the things that Hillary did, including Civil Rights.

I want a real place where I can find this. My list for Hillary is huge. Can someone post a link to what Obama has done. I have only his list of what he voted on in the Senate and a couple of other things.

I am trying to find who has done what. All I find is in correct information.

Try the Library of Congress website, which will provide the legislative records of the two candidates. Obama has been quite productive. Hillary is talented and hard working but she really is not head and shoulders above Barack for getting things done.

The woman who wrote the below link also believed that Senator Obama had accomplished less than Senator Clinton. She looked deep into both Senators' legislative records. She lists Senator Clinton's first and then Senator Obama's.

Senator Obama's is both more extensive (despite his shorter time in the Senate) and contains more of substance (including hundreds of bills he authored). Senator Clinton has done some things for veterans, but as you can see if you click the link (or search the legislative record) much of what she has done is less substantial, like naming Courthouses and parks.

If you need the website, it's http://thomas.loc.gov/ Check out both candidates - look at how many bills they've actually sponsored in the 110th Congress (C-159, O-120), how many they've co-sponsored (C-549, O-407), check out how many have been passed (O-19, C-15)... She does a lot of work but he gets things done...

and the poor slob out there is supposed to be over joyed, because Obama has 30 Million and Hillary has 3. His grandmother still had an outhouse in Kenya when he already lived in a 1.6 Mansion in Chicago. I am sure he helped her fix it now. After all, it wouldn't be befitting for someone who has 30 million in the bank , that his grandma don't even have a decent pot to .......in. Having said that , he put his white grandmother down, now that she is dead, and can't defend herself , all for the prize of the White House. Always remember one thing, for 30 Mill. of Contribution you have to do a lot of favors, and he will in my opinion. The money started rolling in when it became known that he had ties to a racketeer in Chicago. After that they all knew he can be bought. My opinion, and so far I still can have one.

Senator Obama's maternal grandmother is alive and well and living in Hawaii. I have never heard Senator Obama put her down. I have heard him speak lovingly of her and tell reporters that she suffered from no racial animosity, but only some fears based on stereotypes. But, yet you seem determined to hear things that have never been said. I have no connection to any racketeers in Chicago and I am one of Senator Obama's small donors. Thank you so much for the continuing insult -- it is ever so appreciated to be bashed simply because one chose to support Senator Obama, day in and day out by Senator Clinton, herself (who has called us delusional, dismissed us as irrelevant and ridiculed us), her surrogates (I don't like latte) and her supporters (now you accuse us of being organized crime). Pleasant.

98% of his money comes from us. The people. If that means he owes the American people favors, that's a good thing and the way it should be. Hillary, on the other hand, got 97% of her money from lobbyists and big donors. Guess whom she'll owe favors to? Corporate America and the wealthy.

Why, REALLY, is Clinton still in int?

She and her advisers are smart. They can read the numbers. They know she is losing and CAN'T WIIN.

More money....more delegates....48 superdelegates declaring for Obama since SuperTuesday to her ONE.....he's won nearly twice as many states as she has.....AND he has an insurmountable lead in the popular vote.

So.... WHY stay in? My guess? (1) ego--hers and Bills. She was "inevitable" and they've taken a lot of money from a lot of people o prove it.. (2) They've made a lot of promises in exchange for millions of dollars. Many fat cats will be mad. (3) Can she build up any treasury for a run for the Senate?

But, most of all, it seems (4) She (and Bill) want to do anything they can to hurt Obama's chances at winning the General (why? So she can try again in '12?) and (5) They want to take as much time as they can to do anything they can to HELP John McCain. I also think (6) Bill is bitter, bitter, with jealousy over Obama's popularity, integrity, and fresh appeal.

Obama supporters are not pining for the Clinton years. The media is not comparing Obama unfavorably with Bill. Bill Clinton has been praised for so long, but there's a new guy in town. Obama speaks well of the Clinton years, but is moving on. Bill is THE PAST now, when he thought Hilary would have an easy win with Democrats gushing over the "two-fer". Instead, this new guy has captivated the country, and Clinton RESENTS it deeply/

The media is playing along with the fiction that she's still running to win. So...why not do as much damage to Obama and the Democrats chances as possible? I think, as a nominal Democrat, she's gone from "kitchen sink" to "scorched earth". She doesn't care about getting a Democratic president elected (if its not her). It looks to me as if the Clintons have decided that Hillary's chances will be better in 2012 if McCain is president in 2008.

Let the country suffer more. It's all about THEM now.

Does anyone have a different idea of why she won't quit, even though she and Bill do DAMAGE to Dems every day and HELP McCain? They. Know. They. Won't. Win. So.......WHY, other than money, ego, and selfishness?

And if Obama wins in November, you'd better believe that the Clintons will criticize everything he does (positioning themselves as "loyal opposition"--gag) so as to set the stage for 2012.

It's over Hillary. Pack it in, go back home. The people have spoken. Someone forgot to tell the electorate of this country that you were the "inevitable" nominee.

If Hillary can't even run her own campaign without ending up in debt and owing millions of dollars how is she going to run the country? If Hillary is the nominee all dems can say hello to President McCain. If republicans and independents have a choice of Hillary or McCain they will choose McCain over putting the Clinton's back in the WH.

Who are these rabid Obama supporters? I'll tell you.

These are the blokes that put GWB in the WH. Yes. These are the clueless idjiats who believed that voting for Nader is voting for good. They argued and whined and insisted that Nader is the ticket to their "delusional" dream. He is the maverick. Their non status quo candidate. and I hold these blokes responsible for putting GWB in change and gave the the Iraq war.

These same idjiats are now blowing sunshine up everyone's skirt about Obama! Obama is a titanic about to crash. He is toxic with his association with that Church of Malcolm X ideology. They are delusional in the sense that mainstream America is not going to for that. But yet, they are willing to destroy the democratic party for their delusion.

And now, we could end up with Mc Cain and GOP in the WH!

These Rabid Obama supporters are now Toxic for America IMO.

In those states Hilary had a Huge lead weeks before the elections and Obama was able to cut those leads down. In the end, Hilary wasn't able to use the Kitchen Sink to jump into the lead. Obama can get more money from millions of small contributions but the Kitchen Sink can only be used once. After that, Hilary will have to be tear out the supporting columns, roof, and foundation of the Democratic Party to stay even.
