Report: Clinton\'s Private Objections To NAFTA

Report: Clinton's Private Objections To NAFTA "Ludicrous"

ABC's Political Punch   |  Jake Tapper   |   March 21, 2008 05:58 PM

I have now talked to three former Clinton Administration officials whom I trust who tell me that then-First Lady Hillary Clinton opposed the idea of introducing NAFTA before health care, but expressed no reservations in public or private about the substance of NAFTA.

Yet the Clinton campaign continues to propagate this myth that she fought NAFTA tooth and nail because she opposed the substance of the bill.

American foreign policy seems to be dictated by the desire to make the people with the oil mad at them.

It hasn't worked out that well, really.

In the end, it doesn't make a difference to me if she did or didn't support NAFTA.

Her husband DID, over the loud objection of working people and consumer advocates. What the detractors predicted for the agreement happened. I'm not interested in rewarding someone who help push down wages, put more people out of good middle class jobs with dignity, to cater to his craven Wall Street friends and the corrupt olliarchs of Mexico.

Thanks Bill, but no thanks, I remember.

Maybe we should ask Sen. Clinton about a few things, including "Sniper Fire".

And perhaps about NAFTA, Northern Ireland peace accords, taxes from 2000-2006 that have already been filed, donations to the Clinton library, and a few other things.

So if my wife wants someone to die, and I kill them but deep in my heart of hearts yet vocalized to no one I really don't want to do it, am I still guilty if I shoot that person in the face?

By Hillary's tortured "logic", no.

If she does win this, she has given the rethugs so much material to use against her that she doesnt have a chance. The rethugs know that, just like they know Shillary is the only one who will bring even the most pissed republican out to vote for McWar . giving her the nomination is a sure win for McWar. Because people like myself sure as hell wont even bother to vote. not knowing there isnt a stitch of difference between the 2.

This is the ultimate con job, and she has the upper hand here. You cant prove or disprove what she said or did in private. Even if others deny what she is spinning, it all comes down to he said she said, and thats a no win situation. The public record shows she was a hard core supporter of Nafta, and to tell you the truth, if you have video of someone robbing a 711, but then that person says that they really didnt want to do it, what would your gut instinct tell you to go with?

Well the truth hurts, and this truth will hurt Hill in Penn. If she does not win by blow out proportions than she is going to be forced to drop out way before June. It could and should happen soon.

Now that FL and MI do-overs are a dead issue, there is zero chance of a Clinton comeback.

Even with new primaries in these states Hillary would almost certainly come up short.

Nancy Pelosi set the record straight over a week ago already, Hillary will not be strong arming the Supers away from the delegate leader, Barack Obama. The very idea that she still has a chance by way of some unforseen calamity causing irreparable harm to the front runner and then trying like crazy to turn anything they can ( Rev. Wright) into this type of firestorm is unacceptable to say the least. The uncommited Superdels should, and I believe many will, take note of the Clinton campaign's disgusting approach and come out together in support of the Dem nominee for the '08 Presidential election. Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

I have a feeling a big group, like the majority of them, could all go at once and it could happen any day. Do we really need four more weeks of divisive, destructive garbage from the treacherous Sen. Hillary Benedict Arnold campaign? No. She has already expressed her desire to break the party with her conduct of the past two weeks/months. This can't be lost on most of the Supers.

I would believe David Gergen before I would believe Jake Tapper (in the bag for Obama). He said she was not enthusiastic about NAFTA.

The same Jack Tapper that was writing hit pieces on Obama just recently?

I think we can agree, perhaps, that he's good at nailing candidates to the wall, but there's no reason to complain that Clinton's being treated unfairly when it happened to Obama as well.

To oppose something does not necessarily require taking action against it. I can oppose something, in opinion, and not do anything to fight against it. I opposed the Iraq war, but I did nothing to prevent it. Clearly, the fact that Hillary showed some degree of public support for NAFTA legislation creates a contradiction when she says she opposed it. But to simply state that she is lying is also false.

But, in politics, as Obama suggests, compromise is the name of the game. I don't like compromise, and that is one reason I do not like Obama's advocacy of such, but it occurs often in politics. Hillary wanted to promote healthcare, but others around her wanted to promote NAFTA first. She was told, let's get NAFTA passed, and then we can focus on healthcare -- you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

I think it is important to point out that NAFTA was already being crafted BEFORE Bill Clinton came into office, and that the Republican controlled congress with which Clinton had to work was pressing hard for its passage. This is an example of the damage that can occur from "compromise" with Republicans. Not only did we end up with BAD legislation, but now Hillary is dealing with this kind of ridiculous media coverage.

Hillary "compromised" on this issue, in much the same fashion as Obama advocates when he talks about "reaching across the aisle". Good luck, Obama, if and when it becomes your time to actually "compromise" with Republicans as you so advocate.

I might buy her story if she opposed it, and did nothing about it. But she clearly pushed it , and pushed it hard. That is much different that what you are saying.

Yes, as I stated, her public appearances make it difficult for her now, because they appear to contradict her claimed opposition. I grant that, and I'm not a Hillary supporter for those who might wonder. But I think it is clear that politicians have a difficult time saying, "I made a mistake." Very few ever do.

So how do you reconcile Hillary's comments that are pro-NAFTA since she left the White House? Only when she had to go to Ohio and PA has she suddenly become the anti-free trade "I want to fix NAFTA" woman. This is not her stance since 2000. Check the facts.

I am not a Hillary apologist, and I do not reconcile anything Hillary has done, in particular. As I say, her capitulation to, cooperation with, Republican ideology is one reason I did not want to see her as the Dem candidate.

She has often stated that there are problems with the current NAFTA legislation, not just in the past few weeks, as you suggest. And as I stated above, she now has the problem of having been wrong, again (also on the Iraq authorization bill), and that has primarily come about because her husband, and so she, "cooperated" with the Republican congress in passing this legislation. For some reason, a large majority of politicians cannot say they are wrong about something...

If Obama keeps his word to "reach across the aisle" and work with Republicans, he will soon enough find himself in this same predicament, because cooperating with Repubs always leads to this, sooner or later.

Interesting take on her "opposition" to NAFTA. I've read numerous accounts from members of Congress that claimed Hillary was "pimping" for NAFTA (if I can use that term). I've read elsewhere comments from those inside that Hillary had little opposition to NAFTA on its merits.

What was it she said in the Ohio debate...."it didn't work out the way we thought it would"?

Odd that she didn't say "I knew it would fail, but it happened in spite of my opposition to it".

Put up or shut up Tapper, no more anonymous sources. Let me decide if I trust your sources, alright? We have trusted you people (the media) long enough and look where it's gotten us. Suddenly these people come out of the woodwork. Give me a break.

things always come out of the woodwork when you smoke out a rat. clinton has consistently lied or inflated her role as first lady. and this whole "i'm a friend of the nafta-displaced worker," is a crock of b.s. the facts are coming out. maybe in time for the pennsylvania voters to figure out that they shouldn't vote for the triangulator-in-chief who helped bring us nafta, the iraq war, and the bankruptcy bill. yeah, hillary sure knows how to "take care" of the american worker.

We will never get better elected leaders until we demand more from our candidates. Unfortunately, as we've seen time after time, the lying doesn't stop at the White House door. This is our chance to reject the politics of Say Anything to get your way.

The Clintonites are pretty quiet about the new revelations about their Queen's lack of "experience". Now the line is "she's more patriotic" than Barack Obama. Disgusting.

Don't buy into the "patriotic" scam. Remember, Hillary Clinton was the only democratic candidate to refuse to sign the pledge to restore the constitution back to where it should be. You know, little things like habeas corpus, no illegal spying, etc..

"Now the line is "she's more patriotic" than Barack Obama."

There's NOTHING "patriotic" about shredding our military and its capabilities in pursuit of an imbecilic military adventure for profit of a few, and the presidential ambitions of one.
