Obama Gallup Poll

Talking Points Memo:

Talking Points Memo reports that Obama has edged ahead of Clinton in the Gallup daily tracking poll:

Today's Gallup tracking poll shows Barack Obama retaking the national lead over Hillary Clinton, after the Jeremiah Wright scandal had badly damaged his numbers and put him behind for nearly a week. Here are today's numbers, compared to yesterday:

Obama 48% (+3)
Clinton 45% (-2)

It would appear that Obama's big speech on Tuesday, combined with the Bill Richardson endorsement, have gone a long way in fixing his poll numbers for now. But he still has yet to fully recover the six-point lead he had in Gallup a little over a week ago.

Way to go! One more step to the nomination and a loss in the general election. Makes you wonder what all of this was for in the first place.

Polls are inaccurate, estimated not factual though in Pennsylvania Hillary will win. Here's a bit of news for Obama http://www.obamatruth.org/ Polls may change soon

In all but two polls (polls that got the New Hampshire polling the most incorrect), Obama is also ahead of McInsane-in-the-membrane.

Once Hillary is done, it'll be Obama 54%, McCain 40% all the way to Novemeber.

Have you heard the term "cherry-picking" before?

In fact, Obama leads McCain in 3 out of 7 major polls -- sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it? But you overlook McCain's significant leads in the other 4 major polls, which makes his average lead over Obama 1.3%, greater than his lead over Clinton which is 0.8%.

Picking only the poll numbers that support your hopes is sloppy arguing. Maybe, if HRC leaves the race, Obama's numbers will spike. Or, maybe, if everything the Obama people have been saying about the Clinton supporters is true, McCain will reap the benefit. At any rate, the mere fact that after 7 hideous years of George W. Bush -- with the Constitution in tatters, engaged in an endless war, and the economy in the toilet -- that McCain could lead either of the Democratic candidates (and he is, again, presently leading both) is terrifying.

For TimN, link poll numbers at http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/

These major polls of which you speak CNN, FOX, USA Today unlike Zogby and Rasmussen target registered voters - not likely voters and have already shown themselves to be far less accurate. Rasmussen in particular has proven itself to be spot on throughout this primary. The polls you mentioned have already failed miserably in New Hampshire and Nevada and have proven to be highly inaccurate elsewhere.

When Hillary Clinton quits (and she will) one fifth of her supporters are projected to switch to McCain. This divide can only deepen in the coming weeks. Also, McCain has dealt with major career opposition for more than two decades. Obama has never competed against a viable Republican opponent. Right-wing smear machine, Rovian buzzsaw call it what you will, Obama will be in over his head and outclassed by an opposition that will have no trouble painting him as a novice, as a truly divisive political figure, and as an extreme Liberal with no practical plans for the economy, energy, trans-national terrorism or Iraq. This will be one of the most lopsided presidential elections since Dukakis or McGovern.

On Sunday, McCain is viewed favorably by 54% of voters nationwide and unfavorably by 42%. Obama’s reviews are 47% favorable and 51% unfavorable.

McCain unfavorable at 42% and Obama at 51%?

I'll talk to you. All these polls regarding possible matchups in November are as useless as tits on a bull. There is a LONG TIME between now and the GE, and a LOT can and WILL change between now and then. If Obama has shown us anything, it is that his straight talk, and his willingness to address whatever issue head-on, causes voters to be inspired by his transparency and genuineness. I EXTREMELY doubt that his negative ratings will be that high by election time. By the way, Hillary Clinton has had CONSISTENTLY negative ratings (in the 47 to 50% range) for a LONG TIME. I would expect that after the feeding frenzy the media put on around the Rev. Wright issue, that Obama's rating would go down, temporarily.

Good point. It is of course only February. McCain is already established as a moderate with a proven track record of being able to work with those on the other side of the aisle. Obama on the other hand is one of the most far Left legislators in Washington and has no such record working with the opposition. The Reverend Wright issue has hit a nerve with moderates and independents. They are starting to see the association that I've seen all along - the association that this well spoken, intelligent man from Illinois has with some of the most vile and radical elements in our country. That's a hard thing to shake and it's not going away in November.

The vast majority of the public know little about McCain. As Obama goes about giving interviews on planes and major adresses, the nation will come to believe he is president already, as even Peggy Noonan said. The evangelical base will not show for McCain. He will lose as Bob Dole did. Hispanic voters will vote Democratic given McCain's inconsistency on immigration policy and Republican hatred. Young voters support Obama in historic margins. Democrats primaries have seen a 50% greater turnout than Republicans and McCain is too linked with Bush. Bush is a disaster that your party can not recover from for decades.

Yikkity yak yak yak yak, 24/7 by Fox New, Limbaugh, Hannity and some racists and bigots on this site attacking Obama and that nutsy (but mostly right) Reverend Wright.

All it took is one speech from Obama, and he is back climbing up in the polls.

Sorry you bigots and racists, try something different. LOL.

You haven't been paying attention to the polls. According to Rasmussen after the Wright video Obama went from 2 points ahead of McCain to 8 points behind. Since the speech he hasn't budged even 1 point.

To me, Barack Obama is a black and white Abraham Lincoln, ready to lead America out of its racist, discriminatory, bias, hate-mongering, divisive, partisan, gender bias ways, etc.- to get America out of its box of bigotry!

I like the way Keith Boykin thinks!

I want to apologize for the way African Americans have been treated over the centuries; it has been horrific!

One problem, I am very "Pro-Life" from before conception to the grave and I want innocent people freed from "Death Row!"

Psalms 139:13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

Psalms 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Psalms 139:15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Psalms 139:16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. (KJV)

Have a wonderful day in the Lord!

Does vice-president Cheney really not care that polls show that 70% of the country hate the war in Iraq? Is not it our tax dollars that pay for the war? Could Cheney possibly be any more arrogant? He got his five deferments from Vietnam because he had other priorities at the time and now he cares not what the American people think. That scenario only speaks to why McCain can not be elected.

Looking at this page I see you're back to writing your diatribes.

Question for you. When Reverend Wright said the US "invented" AIDS to commit genocide on colored people, when he said the US government imported drugs to throw black people in jail, when he said "God damn America" do you agree with Barack Obama when he said this was "inflammatory and appalling"?

No need for one of your typical manifestos. A simple "yes" or "no" will do.

TimN, please answer 1) How many deferments did Cheney get in order to duck service in Vietnam? 2) What was his later excuse? 3) Does it bother you when Cheney said he does not care how the American people feel about the occupation of Iraq? 4) Is not the American public paying for the war with our taxes? 5) How much daily do we borrow from China to finance the war? 6) How is this $3 trillion war sinking the u.S. economy into a near depression? 7) Why did Cheney say the loss of our troops weigh more heavily on Bush than the military families who lost loved ones? 8) How does McCain's policy on Iraq and Iran differ from that of Bush? At this moment when we have just lost 4,000 troops in Iraq even you can take a moment from your incendiary race-baiting remarks about Obama's pastor and answer these important questions.

I was terrified when the first news about Rev. Wright started breaking. I didn't believe that most white people would be capable of processing the kind of messages Wright was putting out there, 10-second clips and beyond, and I am certain that the blogs have already trashed Hillary Clinton beyond electability. There would be a million things to be sad about if Wright's sermons (of which I'm actually a big fan, having now seen several of them at length), were to destroy Obama's chances in the general election. But that speech he gave really did make a difference. I am not--nor will I ever be--a Kool-Aid drinker. But no one can convince me that his so-called race speech was not the most important moment of this entire election season. Prior to that moment I had never seen a politician make a truly important speech, ever. Centrist though he may be, lame on gay rights, pro-nuke, whatever... to my mind he has finally been vetted in a crisis. Obama is my candidate for 2008. Whether he wins or loses I am convinced that he is the right person to nominate.

It's understandable, after living under the rule of Chimpy for so many years, that many Americans fell for the old, tired BS the republican party spews forth like some ancient volcano - filled with anger, hot air, nothing constructive, its only purpose in this world being destruction of itself and everything within its reach.

People will come back around soon -- the shock of a president that can't even form a complete sentence, find the exit on a stage, and has to ask the closest person to him permission to go to the bathroom takes some time to shake off.

Today I had the distince pleasure of listening the sermon by Rev. Wright which is such a hot topic in the news. It is posted on YOU TUBE. After listeening to it, I was horrified by the electronic lynching this man has received.

Rev. Wright clearly stated that these were the words of a 'white man': His name is Ambassador Edward Peck. And he is a retired, white, career U.S. diplomat who served 32-years in the U.S. Foreign Service and was chief of the U.S. mission to Iraq under Jimmy Carter. The Ambassador spoke those words on FOX News -- hardly the black-rage image with which Wright has been stigmatized.

I found that on Huffington Post. This man said these words on FOX News. To have womeone take a .30 second sound bite and continuously play it over and over again has a clear intent to incite hate.

Then you must have read the part where Reverend Wright stated, "An Ambassador whose eyes were wide open, who was trying to get us to wake up". In other words you've provided the HuffPo audience a distinction, without a difference as Reverend Wright clearly agreed with Ambassador Peck's every despicable word.

And the "black-rage image with which Wright has been stigmatized" was painted on him by Barack Obama himself, not the press. Or didn't you even listen to the 'greatest speech about race for a generation'?

According to Rasmussin (the only ones to get both New Hampshire and Nevada correctly) McCain leads Obama by a significant (and outside the margin of error) 8 percentage points. Also, it seems that Clinton leads Obama by a (within the margin of error) 1 percentage point.

Clinton has already lost the race and the polls make little difference regarding her candidacy at this point. People will recover from Rev. Wright;s remarks, despite fear mongers like you who will try to keep the issue alive. The American people dislike this war immensely. The economy is in shambles. McCain's only selling point is national security, but people witness the violence in Iraq on television daily. When he debates Obama, McCain will look like a lost, forgetful old-timer. Democratic turnout in the primaries is much, much greater than Republican. Obama will inspire countless thousands of young voters to vote. The election is already over and you can thank George Bush for making your party a historical footnote.

Yes, believe it or not citing a biased poll over and over into infinity does not make something true, as your buddy, Karl Rove, found out in the last election. But we know you have "the" math, as Rove said.

Great! I truly think the only place hill was leading Sen. Obama was in the imagination and wishful thinking of most repulicans, fox news, and those thinking the presidency is hill's god given right. She just needs to go home and can peaches or something. And take BC with her. I liked and supported BC when he was prez, but statements from him and hill both over the past couple weeks endorsing a mccain prez are completely out of line. a vote for hill is the same as a vote for mccain.

This was to be expected. Obama gave a historic and honest speech which embraced everyone and tried to share the perspectives of groups of people that may not have been known or understood. The more people study this speech, the stronger a candidate Barack becomes. And the more information that comes out about Wright's remarks and his history, the more people see that he is not the crazed radical he has been painted to be.

This was good practice for the general election. We all know the Republicans are preparing the nastiest of opposition campaigning.

And it is no wonder that Obama "retakes" the lead over Clinton. Good golly, I wish I had a nickel for every tv pundit or newscaster or interviewee who said the Tuesday speech was a great one, worthy of MLK or JFK! Clinton also does not have any recourse to the voters in Michigan or Florida thanks to the wonderful wisdom of the DNC. Thanks to Obama's blocking any of the suggested re-votes the do-over seems dead. Hillary will continue I think, even to the Convention, but it may be that she will not get the nomination. Then the Democratic National Committee can only blame itself for another 4, maybe 8 although I don't think Obama is going to prove more than a flash in the pan, years of Repug rule and God help us all!

You and Hillary should be happy there will not be another vote in Michigan, there is a large Black vote there, there are many more people who would have voted for Obama if he had not followed the rules of the DNC, and had left his name on the ballot as did Hillary. She is always trying to pull a fast one, I wish she would make a fast exit from the political stage before she destroys the party! She also lies, as in "Bosnia".
