Obamaname

Newsweek:

Barry Obama decided that he didn't like his nickname. A few of his friends at Occidental College had already begun to call him Barack (his formal name), and he'd come to prefer that. The way his half sister, Maya, remembers it, Obama returned home at Christmas in 1980, and there he told his mother and grandparents: no more Barry. Obama recalls it slightly differently, but in the same basic time frame. He believes he told his mom he wanted to be called Barack when she visited him in New York the following summer. By both accounts, it seemed that the elder relatives were reluctant to embrace the change. Maya recalls that Obama's maternal grandparents, who had played a big role in raising him, continued long after that to call him by an affectionate nickname, "Bar." "Not just them, but my mom, too," says Obama.

Why did Obama make the conscious decision to take on his formal African name? His father was also Barack, and also Barry: he chose the nickname when he came to America from Kenya on a scholarship in 1959. His was a typical immigrant transition. Just as a Dutch woman named Hanneke might become Johanna, or a German named Matthias becomes Matt, the elder Barack wanted to fit in. America was a melting pot, and it was expected then that you melt--or at least smooth some of your more foreign edges.

What a non-story. Someone deciding that they prefer to be called by their given name rather than a nick name. Come on people get real. how about Sen. Clinton dropping the Rodham once she decided to run for the US Senate. That's more of a story which no one has really questioned Hillary about.
How about some substance. Like Sen. Clinton's lies about her trip to Kosovo and Serbia. how about some accountability on her position on NAFTA. I'm sure the folks in Ohio and Pennsylvania would like a bit more sunshine on these issues. How about Sen. clinton's vote for No Child Left Behind or her votes on the lending/banking laws that have helped contribute to the mortgage mess that everyday working folks are dealing with.

So presumably I should stone my good friend Buddy from college because he decided to go by his given name Carl when he got out of college? And what about my best friend from college, her brother was known as Scooter back then ... not exactly a name that merits good thoughts in politics today. He's Marshall now, as well he should be.

The sad thing is that there is so little dirt on him compared to Hillary and McCain, we have resorted to grasping at things never before grasped at. a candidate's pastor in an endless loop on right wing tv, and now a stupid story like this. It is desperation

I believe you have no desperation to hurt Obama. You are desperate to hurt the USA's middle class and working class.

You desire to add at least 4 more years to the 20 years we've endured by the bush, clinton/clinton, bush administrations where the USA has been stripped of jobs and where our infrastructure has been auctioned off to China and other foreign countries.

No, you don't want to hurt Obama. You want to hurt us.

God Bless the USA

Barack is not an "African" name, but Semitic and well-known in both Arabic and Hebrew

Another misleading headline on Huffpo. How many times have I been suckered into reading a non-story on this website!!!! Who hasn't changed from a childhood nickname on becoming an adult?
I'm sure Stinky has.

Going from a nickname like Barry to Barack is representative simply of the growth of a boy to a man. Period. Like Bubba to Bill, only Barack. If you read his books, you'll understand more about the man and his life. I no longer go by my childhood name variation either.

More sound judgement on Senator Obama's part as Barack is a beautiful name. I can't wait for his real name change that's coming from Senator Obama to President Obama!

“When Barry Became Barack” by Richard Wolffe, Jessica Ramirez and Jeffrey Bartholet
NEWSWEEK 3/31/08 Issue

I found this story very interesting however I was quiet surprised when I reached the last page.

The author recounted a story that was passed on to Sen Obama by white family members concerning an incident at a waikiki bar involving Sen Obama’s bio-dad Barry Sr.
“Barry's white grandfather and several other Hawaiian friends take Barry Sr. to a Waikiki bar. It's a joyous scene, everyone eating and drinking "to the sounds of a slack-key guitar," when a white man with a booming voice announces to the bartender that he shouldn't have to drink "next to a nigger." The stunned clientele expects a fight. But Barry Sr. smiles and quietly lectures the man "about the folly of bigotry, the promise of the American dream, and the universal rights of man." In response, the shamed white man gives Barry Sr. $100, in apparent payment for his sin of racism. Even the young Obama found the tale hard to believe. But many years later, he recalls in "Dreams From My Father," he got a phone call from a Japanese-American man who had been a classmate of Barry Sr.'s in Hawaii. Unprompted, the man told Obama the same story. Obama says he was struck by the man's tone of "disbelief—and hope."
I have wondered for a while now why , although Sen Obama talks about certain race issues he omits discussion on a VERY IMPORTANT RACE ISSUE:
Reparations for slavery.
You can imagine my surprise when I got to the last page of the Newsweek article. I am prompted to re-ask my question concerning reparations for slavery both in the U.S and in Africa-

Last year Sen Obama supported the very controversial 3rd ward Ald. Dorothy Tillman in her runoff against an independent candidate.

Tillman is one of the most important and outspoken U.S advocates of reparations for slavery.

SunTimes Commentary- “Will 3rd Ward politics affect Obama's presidential race? “ by Rich Miller 3/23/07

What is Sen Obama’s position regarding US reparations for slavery in the US, and from western and ex-colonial European powers for Africa and African nations?

During the 2001 UN-sponsored World Conference against Racism, many African nations demanded an apology-plus other things- from ex-colonial European nations for the role they (European nations) had in promoting the slave trade.

Why doesn’t Sen Obama ever discuss this very important ‘race’ issue.

Trust action…not words…

What about the role Africans and Arabs played? Slavery in African predates the American Colonies by centuries. It was an established practice in Africa and America long before the Europeans showed up.

how about the just google the transcripts/agenda/minutes from the World Conference on Racism held in late august 2001. they are online and downloadable for free.

in that conference, slavery was denounced, among other human rights abuses, and it was called specifically a crime against humanity that should never have happened and of which the effects still plague humans to this day.

the nations present at this conference said that more should be done to help people of color who were persecuted during that time, and more folk should be educated on sensitivity, et cetera.

only two nations withdrew their ambassadors from that conference, and the United States was one.

there's your reparations.

i don't want any reparations. i just want affordable, decent healthcare for all of us, child care subsidies like they do in europe for everyone, regardless of income, and affordable college.

more than anything, i want hillary to drop out of the damn race already.

I could care or less why Barack Obama changed his name.

There is a far-reaching scandal brewing for presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, thanks to a radio talk show host based in Oregon. Syndicated talk host Laurie Roth's revelations make the news story about Obama's relationship with a racist, anti-American pastor look like child's play.

A former top official at the Pentagon and former CIA intelligence officer maintain that Barack Obama and former Weather Underground master honcho William Ayers funneled money to Professor Rashid Khalidi, a known terrorist sympathizer.

Could you Huffington Post investigate and report on this issue?

How dare Obama change his name from Barry to Barack. The audacity of him! Pu-leaseeee, this is a story?

Same here, went from Susie growing up to Susan after college-- exactly what is the point of this story? There's so little dirt on Obama that people have to resort to making up an evil agenda out of him not using his childhood nickname? Get real people.

Maybe we should ask Rick Shroeder, Joseph Lawrence, and Kate Holmes... nevermind, that one didn't stick. He chose to use his formal name for the same reason that we had a President John F. Kenney and not Jack Kenney. Short answer: He grew up!
