A two-month old Pomeranian pup weighing less than two pounds was stolen yesterday from a Naperville Petland store. The pup, which has an identifying microchip imbedded in between his shoulders, has set off the equivalent of an "Amber Alert" for pets. HelpMeFindMyPet.com has sent a message to veterinarians, pet stores, and other animal-related businesses within a 50-mile radius.

An 18- to 22-year-old white male, about 5'8" tall, came into the store and asked to see the dog. He was playing with the puppy and requested more information. When the store worker stepped away, the man swiped the dog and ran.

The dog is valued at $1,500, and because of his size and age, needs to be cared for like a newborn baby.

$1,500 for a dog? They're giving puppies away for free down at the shelter.

You mean the microchip embedded in the dog doesn't use geo-location feature, seems like a ripoff to me not to have it.

A friend of the family owns a pet shop and I was shocked to learn how many pups are stolen in a year. This distract and run method is actually very common.

Pippilangstrumpf, $1500 is not overpriced for a pom but everyone should heed your warning to only get dogs from reputable breeders if they absolutely must have a purebred pup. (rescue organizations and the pound are even better places to get dogs)

I've had a pomeranian so reading the part about how concerned the pet shop was about the health of the dog really made me roll my eyes. Any normal pet shop would sell an 8 week old pom to anyone with the $1500 and they'd get to take it home that day. I'm sure the pet shop just wants it back so they can get the money for it, especially now that everyone has seen how cute it is. My pom came from a rescue org. and the family who had bought him from a pet shop were not told anything about how poms behave. They are hard to toilet train. They are primarily a one person dog and they velcro themselves to you. They can be very vicious. It took me almost a year to undo the damage that was done to my li'l guy.

I hate looking in pet shops and seeing dogs that will almost certainly end up in shelters. When Jack Russell terriers were in fashion a few years ago, they filled shelters because they are not "easy" dogs. They are extremely intelligent and require an owner who is at least as intelligent and active as they are. How any pet shop could have sold so many of them to homes that were in no way prepared is criminal. (and how so many idiots could have bought a dog they knew nothing about is also criminal)

I hope the pom in the article is well taken care of and doesn't end up just another statistic.

Everyone should care.
No doubt, this dog was purchased from a puppy mill anyway. So the owners of the pet store and the thief have something in common: Greed.

People should stop patronizing any store that sells puppies. If you want a purebred puppy, find a reputable breeder. Better yet, go to your local shelter or breed rescue society and get a dog that really needs a home.

Pet Stores should be outlawed. Most of the puppies they sell come from puppy mills and are not healthy and certainly waaaaaaaaaaay overpriced. You buy a puppy from a pet store and you are doing nothing more than adding to the coffers of the greedy owner of the store who cares little to nothing about animals or their welfare.

Agree with everything except the oulaw part. They provide lots of good things, just no dogs or cats.
