Why wasn't the truth good enough for Hillary Rodham Clinton?

That's a question worth considering as the former first lady tries to contain damage to her credibility after getting caught exaggerating the danger of her 1996 trip to Bosnia. Two others: Is there a pattern of embellishment? And is she held to a higher standard than her rival, Barack Obama?

The answers: Yes, she's held to a higher standard and, yes, she does exaggerate her credentials. Perhaps she's driven by insecurity; Clinton must think her resume needs padding to reflect "35 years of experience" and the promise to be "ready on Day One."

Otherwise, the truth would have sufficed.

The fact is that Clinton and her entourage were warned in advance that Bosnia was hostile territory and that there had been sniper fire reported in the hills surrounding the tarmac at some point before the trip. As a journalist on the trip, the story I wrote began, "Venturing to the front lines of the Bosnia peacekeeping mission, Hillary Rodham Clinton greeted U.S. troops today and heard horror stories about the region's devastating civil war."

It continued: "Security was tight fighter jets accompanied her DC-17 cargo plane to Tuzla but officials said the first lady took no extraordinary risks on the trip."

In her biography, Clinton wrote about the reports of snipers in the hills and said she met with local children on the tarmac, adding that the gathering was cut short by security concerns. All plausible, and a mission to be proud of.

But during a speech last week on Iraq, Clinton stretched the truth to the breaking point. "I certainly do remember that trip to Bosnia and ... there was a saying around the White House that if a place was too small, too poor, or too dangerous, the president couldn't go, so send the first lady. That's where we went. I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

Hogwash. The truth is:

 There was no sniper fire.

 Nobody ducked for cover.

Bad weather, not security concerns, kept her husband from making the same trip a few months earlier.

Clinton and her aides stood behind the story which she has told more than once until video surfaced showing the former first lady, her daughter, Chelsea, and their entourage strolling off the plane and walking calmly across the tarmac.

"I made a mistake," she said Tuesday. "That happens. It proves I'm human, which you know, for some people, is a revelation."

To be sure, Clinton is not the first American to pad a resume. She's not even the only candidate for president to do so.

Obama has exaggerated his role in reaching a compromise in the Senate on immigration as well as his authorship of a bill to address the housing crisis. Voters need to weigh such distortions when they consider whether the freshman senator from Illinois truly is a new breed of politician.

What makes Clinton's situation unique and the Bosnia embellishments so damaging is the fact that the New York senator has built her candidacy on the illusion of experience. Any attack on her credentials is a potential Achilles heel.

As first lady, she did not attend National Security Council meetings, did not receive the presidential daily briefing on terrorism and other threats and did not have a top level security clearance. Her foreign trips were glorified goodwill tours, a collection of photo opportunities and sightseeing trips.

Still, Clinton was an exceptionally active first lady who knows more than most about what it takes to be president. So it must drive her nuts when Obama and his allies dismiss her role. Their condescension must make it harder for Clinton to accept the fact that hers was a largely ceremonial job, especially after her ill-fated attempt to overhaul the nation's health care system.

And so the best explanation for her Bosnia embellishment may be this simple, and this human: She's overcompensating.

That would explain why it wasn't good enough to say she visited Northern Ireland five times and urged the rivals to make peace. No, Clinton claims she "helped bring peace to Northern Ireland."

She didn't just urge the Macedonian government to open its borders to refugees. No, she "negotiated open borders to let fleeing refugees into safety from Kosovo."

Polls show that voters wonder about Clinton's honesty and authenticity. The Bosnia story plays to that character issue. As former Vice President Al Gore could tell her, once the media and voters start doubting a candidate's integrity, every episode that fits that narrative gets blown out of proportion.

Gore never said he invented the Internet; his mistake was to place himself more centrally than warranted at the creation of the technology. But such nuance was lost on people who voted against him in 2000.

The truth is Mrs Clinton left the entertainers and was taken to an area of war torn Tuzla where she was told was very war torn and dangerous. She landed with protection from snipers although she was safe, and she went there to thank our troops and to say thank you over and over to those brave men.

Sheryl Crow and Sinbad were left to perform there concert and were not along on this side trip.
Someone should check this out and if her description after 12 years and visiting so many places may not have been perfect it was closer to the truth than everyone is saying it was.

I believe someone, especially the media, should apologize to this wonderful person Hillary Clinton.
To me that is another reason she should win the election.
Her critics should be ashamed of themselves for comparing her to Barak Obama.

The truth wasn't good enough simply because Hillary clearly prefers a self aggrandizing lie if it suits her jaw droppingly gross ambitions. She must think everyone is blind and stupid as she waltzes down the campaign trail, channeling the very worst smirking and condescending tendencies of George W. Bush.

A sociopath isn't concerned with truth, but what seems pleasing to himself at the time. According to psychologists, he doesn't feel what others feel, and only acts as if he did. And perhaps he has a need to take risks that produce small gain compared to their potential harm. Essentially a sociopath becomes blind to risks, especially after getting away with enough. Many powerful politicians are like that; and sometimes they act as though they were imune to the consequences. It was a silly lie that most wouldn't risk, because it was so easily refuted. But a sociopath doesn't think like most people.

Spitzer, Bill Clinton, And now Hillary are good examples.

Please listen to Hillary's pseudo-apology on You-Tube!!! Bitter, sarcastic, condescending, grandiose!
A candid picture of the true Hilary. Please look it up.

Haven't done the apology thing view yet. But, if some one was in a river of hailing bullets, and running for cover during sniper fire-------------------you'd remember that--maybe not all the details just like it was-----------but you'd remember! You ask any of those guys in Iraq. They can tell the difference between bullet fire, and when it's a good , quiet landing and visit. I did hear the pilot version last night. And he more than said, It was rememberred all wrong-------and he'd notice if there was sniper fire, because they wouldn't have sat the plane down with the first lady in it. Nore, do they sit people on thier armor jacket. that they have them wear them, and put on thier hellmit. So you could proballly say about 99% of what Hillary clinton said was a out right lie! It's a shame to that she saw it was the only way to make her look experienced, all it did was make her look like a lier, and she has no one to blame on this but herself! It wasn't tObama or his camp who dug up that video, and viewed it or set it out there for the Media to see!

Hillary once was a nun on Mars and cooked pancakes for Elvis. OOPS! I misspoke. I haven't been getting a lot of sleep lately and it has made me unable to distinguish between fact and fantasy... It is happening to a lot of people nowdays....

HRC’s problem is that in her own mind she has a surfeit of the type of experience and qualifications that entitle her to be President. This delusion is mostly fueled by ego and arrogance-not reality. This, in itself, in no way precludes her from being a viable presidential candidate. But, In spite of her endless self promotion, the fact remains she has no more meaningful experience than Obama. And, as she has amply demonstrated recently, her lack of sound judgement has been her main failing.

The U.S. finds itself in dire economic straits and mired in a disastrous war due to the actions of the egotistical belligerent in the White House. Do we need another to succeed him?

Obama did not exaggerate. He said he actively participated in those bills... Now, that's not a lie synonymous to Clinton's nicely constructed lie

Here's the thing: she was trying to claim military experience. In escence she's trying to be the more ruthless, much more intelligent version of John Kerry. She was trying to place herself in dangerous military situations so as to look far more equal to McCain, and more experienced than Obama than she is in fact. Think about it. What do all the above cited embelishments have in common? They all have something to do with war and conflict. Now, to be fair, Obama has exaggerated too, but his are like: oops I supported this legislation, not authored it . Hers are like: oops, turns out I really didn't open a border and free a people. That's going to haunt a body in the general election to a greater degree than we can allow.

Why did her biography claim an epiphany for MLK in 1963 and then a lovefest for the anti-MLK, Goldwater in 1964. Hillary you're driving me crazy, more editing please.

Hillary wrote and read her statement. It was no missspeak. But then she is not as intelligent as claimed. She was at the bottom of her law class and failed ther DC bar exam. (So why do we keep hearing from some quarters that she would be a great Supreme Court Justice?)

As if the video isn't enough, her claim about the sniper fire in Bosnia is debunked by the pilot of the plane that few her into Tuzla.

Sleepy Hillary???? The 3AM phone is ringing...answer it Hillary!!! Bin Laden on the other end of the line calling to tell you "HE's ONE HIS WAY!"
"Sorry Bin Laden, Hillary is having a 'senior moment', can't get her words quite right, and should not be disturbed at the moment - could you please call back tomorrow?"

McCain is the one with the senior moments upto now ,Clinton was most certainly briefed as to the reason for the evasive maneuvers about to be performed prior to landing to evade possible sniper fire .
Baraks Pastor was echoing what was being said worldwide as to the reason for 9/11

Can anyone honestly say Hillary does not have much more experience than Barack on the national and international stage? It's not even close. She might be able to compete with McCain on that count but Obama's resume is going to look pretty thin.

It depends on what you mean by "experience...on the national and international stage."

Because that is exactly what it is -- a "stage." It's how you look and conduct yourself with fellow world leaders, what you say and how you say it to them. In this regard, George W. Bush is an embarrassment. As Nelson Mandela put it, he cannot even speak. And he practically grabbed the *ss of a fellow world leader who was a woman.

It's not what you do on the stage that counts, it is what you say and how you say it when the cameras are off. Hillary would probably do okay, but she is a free-trader and working for her corporate buddies so we would probably, at most, get crumbs from the table.

Barack strikes me as someone who could negotiate an oil deal with Chavez, open trade relations with Cuba and really shake up the corporate "groupthink" that dominates inside the Beltway. Clinton couldn't -- and more importantly wouldn't -- do anything to shake things up. And we need things shaken up badly.

Since our recent "experiences" in foreign relations have been

catastrophically bad errors in "Judgment",

Wisdom,

not participation in war criminal invasions,

should be the deciding factor.

Her judgment as Senator was faulty on the vote giving Bush authority for a preemptive war against iraq and her vote on the kyl-Lieberman amendment. That is AFTER all the so-called experience she had as First Lady. Further, she did not have top security clearance, did not sit in on security meetings,
nor did the buck stop with her when she was First Lady. However, she claims she functioned as co-president and there is some truth to that. Further, there is evidence that Bill would, for terms three and four, function as her co-president. if we just wanted to keep voting in the person with most experience as president , we would not have term limits. Obviously, we value other things more than extending length of time in the Oval Office past eight years.

Of course, keep in mind...she did actually HAVE TO CAST A VOTE...following 9/11 and the hysteria that associated with "terrorism."

Obama, on the other hand voted...oh, wait a minute, that's right...he never actually HAD TO CAST A VOTE...

...did he??

Just saying you have experience is not the same as having experience. Experience doing what? That should be the question. As well as, what was the result of that experience. Did the experience in question result in a less than prudent vote for the Iraq war? Did the experience in question result in a less than prudent vote to allow the possible invasion of Iran? Did the experience in question result in one of the worst managed presidential campaigns in modern history? If so, I think I'll pass on voting for that experience. Even George W. Bush, a man of limited intelligence, was able to run a better presidential campaign than Senator Clinton. If you are no better a leader/manager than George W. Bush, you have no business being elected to any office.
