Obama Posts Six Years Of Tax Returns

Huffington Post   |   March 25, 2008 11:49 AM

Barack Obama has released his tax returns from 2000 through 2006, and has promptly called on Sen. Clinton to do the same.

Find the tax returns here.

The Clinton camp has responded with a list of examples where Obama has not been transparent with his personal records.

From the Obama camp:

Obama Posts Tax Returns on the Internet, Calls on Clinton to Follow Suit Immediately

CHICAGO, IL--Senator Barack Obama today posted his tax returns from 2000-2006 on his campaign website, demonstrating his continued commitment to transparency in government and changing business as usual in Washington. The returns are complete, including all schedules, and are now available to anyone to view. The Obama campaign urged Senator Clinton to join Senator Obama in making her returns public.

Full disclosure on Senator Clinton's part is especially important because she recently loaned $5 million to her campaign, shortly after revelations surfaced that her husband was to receive a $20 million payout from Yucaipa, a supermarket holding company that invests in tax shelters in the Cayman Islands.

Senator Clinton has agreed to release her returns, but will only offer a target date at least three days before the Pennsylvania primary, and has not specified the level of detail.

"Senator Clinton recently claimed that she's 'the most transparent figure in public life,' yet she's dragging her feet in releasing something as basic as her annual tax returns," said Obama Communications Director Robert Gibbs. "Senator Clinton can't claim to be vetted until she allows the public the opportunity to see her finances--particularly with respect to any investment in tax shelters."

The Clinton campaign's vague commitment to release the returns and the Clintons' known involvement with such investments as Yucaipa raise a number of questions.

1. Yucaipa Has A Financial Stake In Three Investment Entities Registered In The Cayman Islands. "Securities and Exchange Commission documents and financial- disclosure forms filed by Hillary Clinton show that Bill Clinton, 61, has a financial stake in three investment entities registered in the Cayman Islands by Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. LLC. In 2004, Hillary Clinton, a New York senator, said she wanted to close the ``loopholes'' for ``people who create a mailbox, or a drop, or send one person to sit on the beach in some island paradise and claim that it is their offshore headquarters.'' [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: If elected President, would Sen. Clinton propose or support legislation to block or curb any of Yucaipa's current business or tax strategies?

2. Clinton Spokesman Claimed That Yucaipa Is Registered In Cayman So That Bill Clinton Can Pay US Taxes. "Jay Carson, a Clinton spokesman, said that while the former president hasn't ``severed ties'' with Yucaipa, he ``is taking steps to ensure'' that ``there will be an appropriate transition for those relationships'' if his wife receives the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Carson, in an e-mail, said the funds are designed for foreign investors. ``All three of these entities (which are related) are organized in the Cayman Islands so that each investor or partner pays the taxes they would owe in their home country,'' he said. ``For U.S. citizens like Bill Clinton, that means he pays U.S. taxes on his income from this fund, which he does.'' [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: Did Bill Clinton participate in the decision for Yucaipa to register any of these funds in the Cayman Islands? If so, did he argue for or against?

3. Clinton Spokesperson Will Not Answer Questions On Whether Bill Clinton Receives Equity Instead Of Cash, Allowing Him To Pay The Lower 15 % Capital Gains Tax Rate Instead Of Higher Income Tax Rate. "Carson said Bill Clinton's payments from Yucaipa aren't deferred and the former president pays tax on that income in the year in which it is earned. Steven Howard, a partner at Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP in New York who advises investment firms, said private-equity firms such as Yucaipa often compensate advisers with a stake in the company rather than salary. ``In Clinton's case, he may be allocated equity instead of significant cash for services rendered,'' Howard said. Carson didn't respond to questions about whether Bill Clinton receives this form of compensation. Howard said equity allocations are taxed at the 15 percent capital-gains rate instead of as ordinary income, which is taxed at rates as high as 35 percent. He said the same benefit applies to so-called carried interest, a profit-sharing arrangement used by fund managers that Hillary Clinton and other Democrats have criticized and vow to curb." [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: Is Bill Clinton allocated equity? What is the effective tax rate that Bill Clinton pays on all income or gains from Yucaipa?

4. Clintons Won't Explain Why Yucaipa Was Listed On Disclosure Forms As Based In Los Angeles Rather Than Cayman; Won't Disclose When Sen. Clinton Became Aware Of Husband's Offshore Deals. "Bloomberg's questions to the campaign involved the nature and amounts of his compensation from Yucaipa, why the holdings were listed as Los Angeles-based rather than Cayman Islands entities, and when Hillary Clinton became aware that the funds were offshore. Carson didn't address those questions. Yucaipa spokesman Frank Quintero referred all questions about the former president's role to the Clintons' spokespeople." [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: Why do the Clintons consider Yucaipa to be a Los Angeles-based company when it is actually based in the Cayman Islands?

à Question: Why were the Clintons unable to answer the media's questions in mid-December 2007?

Ironically, Senator Clinton herself made the release of her opponent's tax returns a central issue when she ran for the Senate in 2000. Numerous Democratic presidential candidates in recent years have released their tax returns, including Senator Kerry, Senator Edwards, General Clark, Senator Lieberman, and Congressman Kucinich.

With the next primary only weeks away and sure to see significant spending from the Clinton campaign, now is the time for Senator Clinton to keep faith with the voters, release her tax returns, and allow these questions to be answered in full. In the meantime, you can view Senator Obama's 2000-2006 tax returns HERE.

Clinton has claimed that releasing her tax returns is unnecessary because she has filed the personal financial disclosure forms that all Senators are required by to submit. But there are key facts that the personal financial disclosure form alone does not disclose, including:

Ø The amount the Clintons make as a couple;
Ø Senator and President Clinton's effective tax rate;
Ø What loopholes, if any, they used to reduce it;
Ø The actual amount of President Clinton's income and not just the range;
Ø What stock have they sold, and how much did they made from it;
Ø The amount they made from their stock dividends;
Ø The deductions they took for losses related to stock sales;
Ø The household employment taxes they paid for employees;
Ø The personal exemptions they took; and
Ø The charitable contributions they have made.

So Obama releases his past six years of tax returns, all covering years that Hillary has refused to release (and won't release until three days before the PA primary--what does that tell you?) and her response is to say, yeah, but he still hasn't released the returns from before 2000? Who the f*** cares about his returns from before 2000, or hers for that matter, which included eight years in the White House when she basically had to release them whether she wanted to or not. The point is his seven most recent years of tax returns are now all available, and hers aren't.

Obama releases all his Senate earmarks, Hillary refuses, and then points out that he hasn't released all his *state* Senate earmarks? Apart from the brazen chutzpah to begin with (he releases something she refuses to release, she responds by criticizing him for not releasing even more), whatever happened to the Clinton theory that only Washington experience matters, that what Obama did in Illinois didn't count

Obama gives out details on his relationship with Rezko that even the Chicago Tribune, a *Republican* paper calls "unusually forthcoming" for a politician, and Clinton, who has been involved in too many shady dealings to count that we know little or nothing about, criticizes him for not revealing even more.

Another day, another definition of chuzpah created by the Clintons.

The issue folks is really simple and its an issue that the American voters should be interested in. If the Clinton's made their estimated 50 million net worth because of book advances and royalties then so be it. Thats between then and Simon & Schuster and Random House. What we want to see from the Clinton tax returns is how much of their income comes from Bill Clinton's associations with overseas individuals and how much of their potential tax liability has been sheltered in off shore tax havens. Its really that simple.
If Bill Clinton is going to be sharing a bedroom with the next President its probably significant to know how much of his income is derived from foreign investors.

It should be noted that Senators Clinton and McCain are listed in the top ten richest individuals in the Senate. Senator Obama ranks 67th. Its pretty clear where McCains money comes from and we certainly can't fault the good Senator because his wife happens to make bundles of cash because Americans drink lots of Budweiser. Senator Clinton on the other hand isn't nearly as clear concerning where the money comes from and how much tax has been paid or avoided on that income.

we cant have a liar as president. after all isnt that what bush did to make us go to war in Irac

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:55 PM on 03/25/2008

Rachel Maddow said that Hillary lying isn't a voter issue. Really? I strongly disagree. This goes to her credibility and is at the heart of her experience argument. People in Ohio and Texas believed her, they voted based on what they believed. And it turns out to be lies. So Hillary stands there and says that Bush lied about Iraq and she, Hillary, voted to go to war because she believed Bush's lies, and she regrets that vote. So I wonder now, today, how many Dems in Texas and Ohio regret their votes for Hillary that were based on HER lies?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 PM on 03/25/2008

Please pennsylvania don't let Hillary Clinton get away with this and all the other Lie's. Tell her we don't want a lier in the white house.

This is so pathethic -- why won't she just crawl under a rock and stay there? She is dragging this party down...what will be left?

Shoot me.

Hillary is too busy ducking from the fire from the Bosnia lies. One more reason to keep other damaging things in the closet. Doubt we will see her tax returns.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:49 PM on 03/25/2008

even on vacation, Senator Obama had time to release his Tax return for six years. Hillary will not! Simple is her first lady papers caught her, and her tax return will to.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:05 PM on 03/25/2008

I have one criticism over Obama's tax returns...$40K in refunds for 2006? Bush's tax cuts working hard again.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:43 PM on 03/25/2008

Hillary Clinton won't be releasing her tax returns. Too much shady financial dealings. she'll do everything in their power to avoid that.

Hillary's been looking a little down in the dumps these past few days. Maybe she realizes that the S...."s about to hit the fan soon when she releases her tax returns. But I wouldn't be surprised if she paid an attorney to fix her tax returns for her......,that's why it's taking so long. What a woman !

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:19 PM on 03/25/2008

I suspect the real horror would be in it, but I would also like to see how much money has come in, from where, and how it's spent in each of the respective campaigns. Is this information already in the public domain?

A GRAND BARGAIN FOR DEMOCRATIC PARTY UNITY

It is clear, with Politico.com reporting that even Hillary's campaign is coming to the rational conclusion that she has--at best--a ten percent chance of winning (and NYT columnist David Brooks today saying it is actually half that (5 percent), that uniting the Democratic Party around Barack Obama is imperative.

Here is a solution that allows everyone to take something from the table, which is what it is going to take for the Party to begin the healing process.

A deal should be struck whereby Hillary agrees to withdraw from the race, and Obama agrees to let most of the Florida and Michigan delegations be seated at the convention.

Hillary could then claim a victory of sorts, as making this the "price" of a dignified exit would allow her to say she is putting the Party's prospects in November above her own ambitions.

(Being able to point to getting the questioned delegations seated would allow her to show something very unclintonian--loyalty to others.)

It would also help the Democrats win those two states in the general election.

It requires noblesse oblige from both sides.

Obama clearly has it.

And if Hillary takes the deal, it would do a lot for her restoring the family legacy that this ugly campaign, and especially Bill Clinton's role in it, has so tarnished.

"Numerous Democratic presidential candidates in recent years have released their tax returns, including Senator Kerry, Senator Edwards, General Clark, Senator Lieberman, and Congressman Kucinich." - Well, let's see.... Hey, what to you know? None of these candidates actually got elected.

I want a resume before I hire a employee------------------and rather she likes it or not thats all she would bse as president. She works for us and I want to see all the tax returns, Bills Library donors and the fulll story on Bosnia and any where alse she claims foreighn experience with.

And your point is what exactly?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:48 PM on 03/25/2008

The point is that she presents herself as the champion of blue-collar workers. We need to know whose interests she protects. Does she really care about workers, or is she just another politician, on the side of Corporate America?
She is not to be trusted.

I want to see how much money Bill got paid by Dubai Ports World to advise them on how to make the purchase of our ports go through, something not in the interests of anyone in the US. While Hillary's stump speech is full of talk on stopping jobs from going overseas, Bill is helping Dubai to purchase the ports.

Awesome, this should be a mandate for every candidate.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:11 PM on 03/25/2008

I just switched on MSNB to see if they were covering this and what I saw was Chuck Todd running interference for Hillary. Obama relases his taxes, then Hillary retaliates by making a public statement concerning the Rev. Wright. "I would have gotten rid of him." There was no mention of pressing her to release her back taxes. Once again, she dodges the big issue by turning it back to race. She makes another race baiting statement. What BS. MSNBC is fully aiding and abeting her by marginalizing this.. Does anyone else see this media bias? Truthfully, what the reverend says is not who Obama is... but his taxes are and so are hers! I think we should write to anyone who'll listen and demand her taxes since 2000. Show me just how honest and electable you are Hillary!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:51 PM on 03/25/2008

April 15th is convenient timimng to release tax statements but it is fair then to start to list the questions now that should be answered along with those returns. If the questions seem uncomfortable too sit with then answer them sooner. But they remain legitimate questions to the election, especially considering Whitewater as either wrongdoing in fact or distraction to progress. This isn't a vast right wing conspiracy asking, but democrats wanting to know answers.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:31 PM on 03/25/2008

Hillary is such a phoney...Just demonstrates how reprehensible the lengths that elected officals will go for political survival...My only surprise is how surprised people have been on how nasty the process has become...Sadly, I see it getting worse by the time the convention rolls around that will make Florida 2000 look like a picnic.

An equally important disclosure would be the (complete) Clinton Library donors list. After all the noise that Camp Clinton has made over Sen. Obama's association with Dem. donor Tony Rezko, it would be an interesting name to look for when-or if-it is made public.

I try to be fair in criticizing the candidates, but what is she hiding? Now that Obama has released his Tax Returns, she should step up to the plate and do the same thing---instead of continuing to talk about Obama's pastor.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:05 PM on 03/25/2008

Hillary is actually really really anxious to release her tax information. It is just not her fault that she can't do so in a timely fashion. She has her people working 24/7 on the Spin that is going to be needed to explain how she and Bill got so wealthy so fast. And it wasn't from their books, more likely something about Bill's ventures into uranium mining in Eastern Europe, heavy overseas investments etc. etc.

The campaign of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Rodham Clinton, criticized the delay, asking whether he was hiding something. The State Democratic Party even sent a young campaign worker dressed as Uncle Sam to Mr. Lazio's campaign events, to shout at him to disclose the returns.

''Rick Lazio can't explain why it took three months to release his taxes,'' said Howard Wolfson, a Clinton campaign spokesman. ''Now he won't come clean with New Yorkers and reveal the real cost of his reckless trillion-dollar tax plan. It's time for Mr. Lazio to stop playing games and start talking straight.''

Hillary where are your Tax Ruturns ????????????????
