LOS ANGELES — Simon Pegg won't be beaming up any differences for his take on starship Enterprise's chief engineer "Scotty" in the upcoming "Star Trek" film.

"I am playing `Scotty,' but James Doohan is `Scotty,'" Pegg told The Associated Press at the "Run Fatboy Run" premiere afterparty at Les Deux nightclub Monday night.

Doohan played "Scotty" in the '60s TV series and in several movies.

"I tried to approach the role like he did. He's a Scottish engineer who works in outerspace. He's a bit of a brawler. I didn't try to facilitate change," the 38-year-old British actor said.

In "Run Fatboy Run," which opens Friday, Pegg wears short-shorts as an fumbling Londoner who begins training for a marathon to impress his ex.

He's more coy about what his Montgomery "Scotty" Scott will look like in the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek," expected on the big screen next year.

"I couldn't possibly tell you what I wear in `Star Trek,'" Pegg said.

Pegg said he finished shooting the film, which stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, last week. Pegg said he's signed up to star in three potential "Trek" movies.

"I'm looking forward to doing that for the next few years," he said. "Hopefully, I'll do a lot in between, too."

Other celeb attendees at the "Run Fatboy Run" premiere included Pegg's co-stars Thandie Newton, India de Beaufort and Harish Patel; Oscar winner Diablo Cody; Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie of HBO's "Flight of the Conchords"; and John Krasinski, Eddie Izzard and Jonathan Silverman.

Aside from the oldity of the news, more evidence that HuffPo's headline writer needs professional help. "Scottie" is a dog. "Scotty" is the character.

Oh, I'm sure the star of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" will look right at home on the Enterprise.
What a dumb effin' casting move this was.

Oooooh, anything with Simon Pegg has gotta be good! Not only is he a really funny comedian, he's seriously cute! I am one gay boy fan who has a major crush on this gay friendly str8 cutie from across the pond. Shaun of the Dead should be required viewing, he's so funny & quirky cute in it :) Can't wait to see him as Scotty.

I'm reminded of Smokey and the bandit 2,3,4,ect. and ghostbusters 2&3. I think there was a three. Making a sequel with the same people is one thing, but when you do it with a completely new cast is asking for it to go directly to video.

This isn't really news. It was reported that Pegg was Scotty, months ago!

This was reported on the now-defunct startrek.com site at least 6 months ago.
By the way, a 38 year old actor playing Scotty in this prequel seems really old.
Live long and prosper.

Besides Bones, Scotty was probably one of the oldest members of the crew on the original.
