McCain Plagiarized Foreign Affairs Speech

UPDATE: This piece was retracted by Think Progress.

Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) gave a foreign policy speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. He stated:

I detest war. It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description. When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue. The lives of a nation's finest patriots are sacrificed.

Innocent people suffer and die. Commerce is disrupted; economies are damaged; strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. Not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war. Whatever gains are secured, it is loss the veteran remembers most keenly.

These lines are not McCain's own. As TP reader 5th Estate discovered, they were in fact taken largely from a 1996 speech by ret. Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer. Below is a comparison of McCain's address yesterday with Ziemer's in 1996...

This article is so unprofessional, and the Huff Post is even more unprofessional for noting that the article was retracted by Think Progress without noting why. It shows that you are not about discussing real facts, but just venting for feelings.

It's OK to not like McCain. I don't like McCain. But you look like a fool when you make claims that are false.

In 1995, McCain made a speech in which he used the subject words/phrases/sentences/ideas. In 1996, Adm Ziemer re-used those same words, quoting McCain. This is verifiable. It is easy to find if you take a few moments.

It's really hard to see how this could NOT be plagiarized. After all, this guy made a joke out of bombing Iran, he told people he wanted the US presence in Iraq for a 100 years. He's directly contradicted his own statements, including his serious ones. A vote for McCain is a vote to kill human beings. War kills people. That is an unavoidable fact. Even if you're voting for McCain to get back at the Democratic nominee that you didn't like, you're voting to kill people. We can't absolutely trust the Democratic candidates, but by all accounts, they've given their word that they're going to try and stop this mess. THAT is a vote for saving lives. Those who do not vote should have a very incredibly good reason for not voting to save lives.

WOW, HE'S LIKE OBAMA.

Too bad Obamites can't say a damned thing about this. Remember? They defined-down plagiarism to mean it's cool if (a) it's a buddy who doesn't seem to mind if you rip off their words and (b) you change a few words around. After all, they're just words.

I'm sure Rear Admiral Ziemer won't mind that McCain borrowed his words, so we can all just move along now.....

It turns out that the admiral actually plagiarized McCain:

If McCain had permission from Rear Adm. Ziemer, then it's not plagiarism. If Rear Adm. Ziemer didn't authorize McCain to use his words, then McCain is in deep doo.

I really, really can't wait until he falls all over himself trying to debate Obama.

I thought his campaign slogan was, "FOUR MORE YEARS." Since his domestic and foreign policies are recycled, why shouldn't his speeches be re-runs, as well.

Brilliant:

Asked negotiating with certain foreign leaders such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Obama said:
"I think people understand the notion of talking to our enemies," Obama said. "If FDR can meet with Stalin and Nixon can meet with Mao and Kennedy can meet with Khrushchev and Reagan can meet with Gorbechav, then the notion that we can"t meet with some half-baked dictator is ridiculous."
"I"m not worried about losing a propaganda war with Ahmadinejad," he said, "That guy opens his mouth and I think people see there are problems there."

McCain: the false bravado of W, the senility of Reagan, the morals of Nixon. What more could you ask?

This is all the product of some vast left-wing conspiracy.

I had to go to your profile to make sure this was just good sarcasm,

instead of a bonehead conspiracy theory by an ignorant Clintonista.

Puhleeze, not that again. It's apparent by now that the only party capable of managing a conspiracy is the republican party.

Being an independent with left leanings I bow my head to the right and often wonder why on the left we don't manage to conspire as well. Truthfully I don't wonder I know. The left doesn't believe their superior the right sure does. The left doesn't feel it has God mandate - they're too busy trying to make sure they measure up to the God requirements. The left - if they manged a consensus - would be proclaiming it to all and hence outing themselves. The right has always managed to keep their endeavors secret and therefore advancing farther. And finally, the left cannot bring themselves to take support unless it comes from likeminded source. On the right - they take it from any source that will give it.
