HARRISBURG, Pa. — Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton accused rival Sen. Barack Obama and his allies of trying to stop people from voting as some of his backers have called on her to drop out of the presidential race.

The Obama campaign rejected the charge, dismissing Clinton's criticism as "completely laughable."

In a series of television interviews in states holding upcoming contests, Clinton vowed to press on with her campaign and suggested Obama and his supporters wanted to keep those states from playing a role in selecting the party's presidential nominee.

"My take on it is a lot of Senator Obama's supporters want to end this race because they don't want people to keep voting," she told CBS affiliate KTVQ in Billings, Mont. "That's just the opposite of what I believe. We want people to vote. I want the people of Montana to vote, don't you?"

Montana holds its primary June 3. The New York senator made similar comments in interviews with stations in Indiana and North Carolina, which hold primaries May 6.

Obama leads the overall race for the Democratic nomination with 1,631 delegates, including separately chosen party and elected officials known as superdelegates. He got the backing of Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Monday. Clinton has 1,501, according to the latest AP tally.

Clinton almost certainly will end the primary season narrowly trailing Obama in the popular vote and among pledged delegates unless the nullified primaries in Florida and Michigan are counted _ an unlikely scenario at best. But Obama is unlikely to end the race with the 2,024 pledged delegates needed to win outright either, meaning the nominee will be determined by roughly 800 superdelegates.

Responding to Clinton, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said: "That is completely laughable from a campaign that thought the race would be over on February 5. We have encouraged our supporters to do no such thing and Senator Obama was very clear he supports her carrying on in this race."

Campaigning in Pennsylvania, Obama called the continuing primary battle "a struggle" but said he believed it was a good process that would strengthen the party in the long run.

"It is a healthy thing that so many people are passionate," Obama said in Johnstown. "I think it is great that Senator Clinton's supporters are as passionate about her as my supporters are about me... I think that is making this historic race that much more compelling."

Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy last week became the first leading Democrat to openly call on Clinton to step aside and cede the nomination to Obama. He said he worried the prolonged nominating battle was strengthening the chances of the Republican nominee in waiting, John McCain.

Since then, Obama and his supporters have said Clinton should stay in the race as long as she chooses while indicating a lengthy primary battle would not help the party's position in the general election.

Obama has been picking up superdelegates at a rapid clip while Clinton's success with that group has slowed considerably.

"I don't even keep track of it, I can't even tell you that figure," Clinton said when asked by Pittsburgh CBS affiliate KDKA how many superdelegates had endorsed her in recent weeks.

As she spoke, her husband, former President Clinton, was in Oregon, lobbying uncommitted superdelegates.

Her annoying lies deminish ones respect for American politics.h
The media's failure to expose them all promptly diminishes ones respect fot American journalism.
That is more than annoying.
Small mindedness irritates.
But Hillary won't win with this.

Just to set the record straight, I watched James Carville offer to split the expense of re-doing the Mich and Fla primaries with an Obama supporter on CNN. The O-supporter wasn't having any of it. It was OBAMA's lawyers who prevented the primaries from being re-done. Obama on TV said that it was "too complicated".

That's weak and inaccurate to claim Obama's lawyers who prevented any primaries from being re done. Carville's offer is also disingenuous. That's a about 12-15 million for each of them first of all and second of all no private entity to should ever, ever, ever pay for any kind of vote. That's simply a ridiculous idea. If they want to donate that amount to the DNC so they can cover the costs, that's another story. The bottom line is the only fair solution would involve very costly re-votes with the opportunities of both candidates to campaign in both states.

Desperation is soooo ugly.

Hillary can stay in the race so that she can be summarily beaten by Obama then she directly ask superdelegates to give her the nomination againsts the voters.

People, has Clinton seriously considered what the reaction would be if the superdelegates gave her the nomination after Obama has won it? I shudder to think about the reaction from around the country!!

It would be acceptable for Hillary to remain in this campaign if she and her campaign operated with the decency of Mike Huckabee. But instead she and her campaign wage a ruthless battle in which the Republicans seem to be her new best friends and Obama and his campaign are her new “vast right wing conspiracy”. She does love to have an enemy, and she will not care if her own party gets caught in the crossfire and weakened for the November election. That is why it is detrimental to the Democratic Party for Hillary Clinton to remain in the race. UNLESS SHE DECIDES TO RUN HER CAMPAIGN WITH DECENCY.

Hillary Clinton LIES NON-STOP!

Lying MUST be in the Clinton DNA as they do it so easily.

SHE didn't even care about Florida or Michigan until she started losing badly...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:51 PM on 04/01/2008

Is the MSM news keeping track of these lies, too? Obama on several occassions lately has stated unequivocally that he thinks Hillary should continue in the race as long as she likes, and that people shouldn't be calling on her to drop out. It is a gross distortion, to say the least, to characterize the position of Obama supporters and coming from Obama himself.

Oh, and that "I don't track Superdelegates" quote. What a whopper!

Hey ROOKIE,

have you ever heard of GOOD COP, BAD COP?

Obama is all too familiar playing this.

Example-1: He got Impastor-Wright to denounce/disparage Hillary with racist hate comments in Dec. of 2007 just before the primary season started. You are aware the IMPASTOR's sermons are taped for sale and to send to other churches. In reality what the IMPASTOR said were not factual, while Obama did not grow up "privileged", he also did not grow up in poverty or without two parents. His mother remarried and he lived with both his grand-parents. Hillary admits she grew up "blessed" and there are many like her who give back for their blessings and she is doing just that. Obama did appoint this IMPASTOR as head of his campaign's AFRICAN-AMERICAN RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE. IT IS NO COINCIDENCE THAT OBAMA GOT SUCH A LARGE PCTG. OF THE BLACK VOTE (UP TO 90% IN SOME PLACES).

NOW RE: HILLARY TO BOW OUT. Of course Obama is not going to tell her to do that, he needs some of Hillary's constituency if not a large portion, so he plays good cop and has his surrogates, supporters DO THE OBAMA DIRTY WORK, SOMETHING HE AND HIS IMPASTOR ARE QUITE FAMILIAR WITH, "RIDIN' DIRTY"!

Your good cop, bad cop analogy doesn't make any sense. Your bias is sad commentary IF you support Hillary. Hillary plays bad cop, worse cop. I think your problems are obvious in your rantings.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:20 PM on 04/01/2008

That's right, Obama used his mind control ray on his pastor to make disparaging remarks. Didn't hear Obama's speech did you. He acknowledged that he owed his place in society because of America. A black guy gets a lot of black votes, wow, there's a story.

It was a great thing the media kept showing her comments about Obama "not wanting the voters to vote" and immediately showing Obama saying she should stay in the race. Can her campaign see she is looking more, and more like a liar? I know desperate people says anything to keep the charade going, but come on strategists, you are making her look pathetic.

a new level of insincerity. combined with her war vote, 8 years without healthcare achievement, pro nafta lobbying, sniper fire embellishing, tax return hiding, media conspiracy whyning, what else does a true democrat need to GO Bama?

Clinton campaign member Harold Ickes was on the committee that voted to strip the delegates from Florida and Michigan. Her campaign had almost a year to contest that and demand the delegates be seated. All the Democratic candidates signed pledges that they would honor the DNC's decision and not campaign in the states. They also agreed that the delegates would not count toward their accrual during the primary season. So, tell me again, how is this Obama's fault?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:53 PM on 04/01/2008

This Florida/Michigan issue is such a bunch of crap it's getting hard ridiculous. Here's the deal - most of the superdelegates know what happened with the primaries in those two states. They know that Hillary is pandering to the public about this. I think once some plan to seat these people is arrived at, Hillary's braying about it will end and she will not benefit like she thinks she should - or to the extent that she would have her supporters believe. She did not EARN these delegates in any sense of the word. After this issue is resolved, I think you will see a huge shift in superdelegates to Obama and it will be over. Finally.

IBTW, Ickes is working behind the scenes now on a whisper campaign to the super delegates using the Rev. Wright issue as a sledge hammer. While Hillary doesn't have the guts to talk about Wright publically because it's been costing her in the polls, she sends her surrogate hack to spread the dirt behind the scenes.

I gave Danbury a great deal of credit for being clever.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/27/us/politics/27dems.html

It was also in Politico.

I wonder why Danbury isn't outraged about the treatment of Nancy Pelosi by that pimp and BET founder Bob Johnson.

She would rather whine about how mean "Obamans" are to her.

We can agree we "disagree" about her motives for the Iraq war vote, or at least her explaination of it.

What did you think of her answer about why she voted for the bankruptcy bill? Was that another misunderstanding?

The article is about disenfranchising voters who voice can still make a difference, must you make it about something else?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:43 PM on 04/01/2008

And she played an active role in disenfranchising those voters when she signed the same pledges the other candidates did. now she wants a re-do. Seems pretty disingenuous to me, kind of speaks to her character, her arrogance at believing she wouldn't need them, and her poor planning.

No others were arguing her voting record, but if you like, back to the topic.

Voters disenfranched, wouldn't that be ignoring the results of the primaries and asking superdelegates to overturn the results?

Ok everybody. The same tactic is getting used over and over again here... Bait people with childish insults, and then accuse them of hypocrisy for indulging in a childish response.

We all know how to deal with a bully, right? Don't respond. S/he'll get bored and go away.

Exactly. And I know the feeling. Once in a while, the smart ones will take a deep breath and admit they got carried away - but I think it's pretty clear that some of them are just here to antagonize people. Once they smell a real discussion, they clam up and pick a new fight.

Top 10 reasons this Obama supporter is anti Clinton's NH –fliers, Sen. Obama not a supporter of women’s issues, AGAINST a women’s right to chose. NV –HRC on board for caucuses being held in some casinos. Biggest union in NV endorses Obama, now casino voting is not fair, HRC supporters file a law suit. Bill accuses Obama supporters of voter intimidation, DNC offer to investigate Bill declines. No candidate has ever complained about caucuses accept the Clinton’s because Obama does better in Caucuses. FL & MI – Candidates understood the rules and agreed not to campaign. HRC give victory speech in FL. Now she behind the rules should not apply. SC – HRC surrogate Mr. J. Obama is a drug dealer . Bill compares Obama’s win to Jessie Jackson’s –of course the “black man” would win this state dah! OH– Kitchen sink strategy -- throw anything and everything and hope something sticks. HRC asked on 60 minutes if she believed Sen. Obama was a Muslim, “well as far as I know he’s not”. HRC - she and McCain are ready to be President but Obama is not. Bill Clinton speech to veteran’s, there are "two" people in this race that love their country, Sen. McCain and my wife . HRC has NO comment regarding the Rev. Wright uproar UNTIL she’s in deep do-do over her Bosnia lie – now she does have something to say - 24 hrs later, media no longer talking about Bosnia lie, focus back on Rev.

And don't forget, now her strategy has turned to "Obama is disenfranchising voters". If she says it enough people will start to believe it. This strategy may make it harder for him to win FL in the general. Way to kneecap. If he doesn't lose the nomination it seems she will help him lose the general. That way she can angle for 2012. She's no dummy, she knows what she is going for. Lets hope she can't pull the wool over the voters eyes on this one either. One thing she doesn't seem to understand is that voters aren't as stupid as she thinks we are.
