Clintons Tax Returns

Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign has released her 2000-2006 joint tax returns, showing $109.2 million in income over the last seven years.

In 2000, when the Clintons last made their returns public, they reported an adjusted gross income of $416,039. Since then, Bill Clinton alone has made $82 million from just his speech income ($51.85 million) and payments (totaling $29.6 million) from his two books -- "My Life " and "Giving."

The key details from Clinton's website:

TAXES PAID: $33,783,507

The Clintons paid $33,783,507 in federal taxes - 31% of their adjusted gross income. According to the most recent data available from the IRS, in 2005 taxpayers earning $10,000,000 or more paid on average 20.8% of their adjusted gross income in taxes.

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS: $10,256,741

The Clintons donated $10,256,741 to charity - 9.5% of their adjusted gross income. According to the most recent data available from the IRS, in 2005 taxpayers earning $10,000,000 or more contributed 3.1% of their adjusted gross income in cash contributions to charity. Information about the Clinton Family Foundation, including a list of charities to which the Clintons contributed through the Foundation, is available online in the Foundation's publicly available tax returns (www.foundationcenter.org).

AFTER TAX EARNINGS: $57,157,297

CUMULATIVE TOTAL(GROSS) INCOME: $109,175,175

Including, among other items:

* Senator Clinton's Senate Salary: $1,051,606
* President Clinton's Presidential Pension: $1,217,250
* Senator Clinton's Book Income: $10,457,083
* President Clinton's Book Income: $29,580,525
* President Clinton's Speech Income: $51,855,599

"The Clintons have now made public thirty years of tax returns, a record matched by few people in public service," Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said in a statement. "None of Hillary Clinton's presidential opponents have revealed anything close to this amount of personal financial information."

TaxProf provides a year-by-year breakdown of the Clintons' charitable giving (as a percentage of their annual gross income)

Some additional observations from Ben Smith:

First, a couple of things that could bite Hillary:

The returns show more than $50,000 in income (and $40,000 in losses) in 2006 from funds with the name Quellos, an asset manager accused in a scathing bipartisan 2006 Senate committee report of structuring "tax shelters."

The 2006 return also contains a foreign tax credit worth $285,368, which could be an issue in a race that has been hostile to the notion of overseas jobs -- though the details of that figure (line 47 of the 1040 from 2006) aren't immediately obvious.

On the other hand:

A number of readers have e-mailed to say the Clintons' charity is ersatz, as it went to their family foundation. In fact, the foundation was giving the money away to a range of groups; you can see the foundation's 990, which has been written about before.

Questions about Clinton's tax returns have dogged her throughout the election season, particularly in March when Sen. Barack Obama released his returns.

Following Clinton's tax return release, DNC Communications Director Karen Finney released a statement "on John McCain's 26 year history of refusing to release his tax returns":

"While both Democratic candidates for president have released several years worth of full federal tax returns, John McCain has not. As a self-professed champion of disclosure and ethics, John McCain should explain why for the past 26 years he has not seen fit to provide this important financial information to voters. Presidential candidates have disclosed several years worth of returns for decades, John McCain stands as a disturbing exception."

A number of people have suggested that the sources of President Clinton"s speech income has not been disclosed:
This is entirely false. President Clinton's income from paid speaking engagements, including the source, date, and amount of income for every single speech, is fully disclosed on Senator Clinton's public financial disclosure forms and has been for every year that she has been a Senator. These forms
are released annually, are available on the internet, and have been widely written about by news organizations such as the Washington Post and New York Times.

You Obama supporters should really be more concerned that Obama keeps saying he wants to emulate the Republicans, that he thinks they are the party of ideas and calls Clinton's eight years (despite that he won't mention the Clinton President specifically) in office more of the same over the past 16 years despite that while Clinton was President he presided over the longest period of peace and prosperity in the USA.

Could you shoot me a link to the "I want to emulate Republicans speech"? Geez, I guess I may have been duped.

Many of these types of comments are so ridiculous.

Bill came from a broken home and was raised by his mother. Sound familiar?
When Bill ran for pres is was less well off than the Obamas. You cannot compare an ex-president years older than a junior senator in any Apples to Apples comparison.

Also for Objective people on the actual candidates:

In 2006, Hillary made 554K on her book
In 2006, Obama made 506K .on his book
They both took about 150K from the Senate.

Finally:
Obama is younger than all three so there are important life stage relationships to financial situation. When the Clintons were at the same stage, they were likely poorer. Bush was the best off the three at the same age by far.

When any President leaves office, there is a great natural demand for his services. In addition, the demand for Obama is greater when he became Senator and if he makes Pres, it will be even greater than that, once he is out of office of course.

So comparing numbers with three people all in different stages of their political and private careers and age is intellectually inconsistent. The minute Reagan left Office he started getting 2M per speech and that was in the 80s!

On thing you can count on, I believe that by 5 years of leaving the presidency Bush and Cheney both will be thinking Billionaire.

Just listened to Hillary's speech in North Dakota on the economy and "special interests". I agreed with it completely.

However, I'm a little dubious of the source. Hillary has taken as much corporate and foreign special interest money as George Bush.

Just look at her own tax return. She and Bill have been raking it in since her election to the Senate in 2000.

In 2000 they made $357,026. By 2007 that number had exploded to $20,400,000!

I hope you will forgive me if I am a little skeptical of Hillary and her message on "special interests".

By comparison the Obamas earned less than $1 million in 2006. Of that they paid nearly a third to the IRS.

I think its pretty clear why the Clintons were afraid to come clean on this.

Here is the source on Obama. One of Hillary's most reliable cheerleaders:

These numbers are all Apples to Oranges when you compare them to the candidates/presidents/expresidents in two ways.

- First percentages should be corrected, but most importantly,

Obama is younger than all three so there are important life stage relationships to financial situation. When the Clintons were at the same stage, they looked poorer. Bush was the best off the three at the same age by far.

When any President leaves office, there is a great natural demand for his services. In addition, the demand for Obama will be greater when he became Senator and if he make Pres, it will be even greater than that, after he is out of the office of course.

That's fair. I am far more concerned with how they got their primary money. Regardless though any candidate will have a hard time saying they are for the little people when they earned 109$ in 7 years.

Well I would say this:

For objective People:

In 2006, Obama made 506K .on his book
They both took about 150K from the Senate.

Where are Obama's tax returns for the last 13-14 years since he has been in politics? We demand answers and to see the real link between him and Rezko.

You've got to be kidding!!! Obama was only able to pay off his school loans from the sale of his book, "The Audacity of Hope"....Don't EVEN compare Clinton with Obama.!!

Yes, we do, and we can't wait until he is the Dem nominee to find this information out. Barack Obama has been less than forthcoming about his relations throughout his career. Just look at how his stories have changed regarding characters such as Rezko and Wright. There is a clear record of contradictory statements, but people are too blind to see. He may claim to be transparent, but he is anything but. Obama tells what sells. He will write an entire book about an absentee father and throw grandma under the bus if it will edge him one step closer to being POTUS. Not admirable.

SC,

You think he hasn't been vetted yet? The Rezko thing is OLD NEWS. Nothing has come of it. IT AIN'T STICKIN'! We should be concentrating on McCain as a member of the Keating 5 or the fact that the majority of his and Hillary's money comes from the wealthy. Let's not rehash old non-news like White Water or Rezko.

Can you imagine what McCain surrogates would do with this information in a general?

It would be pretty funny, I admit, given old "straight talk" John's seedy past and current associations.

the point is not how much money the clintons made,
its about HOW they made that money.
what took them so long to release the tax returns??
how are we sure those tax returns havent been doctored, considering the clintons long history of people either witholding r destroyin documents on their behalf...see maggie williams and sandy berger.
all this talk abt yay!! they gave 10 million to charity....WHICH charity?? and doesnt that earn them a tax break???
and they release the tax returns ON A LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON...
why do the clintons have to be so sneaky???

its just the way they behave, sneaky, and slef righteous, and underhand, and hyprocritic, we are entitled, yoy should be loyal to us or else you are a judas...i mean come on!

When the Clintons left the Whitehouse they couldn't even afford the down payment on their 4 million dollar house and now they are multi-millionaires based on their brilliant writing and elocution abilities???

Come on people...how dumb would we have to be to believe this?

I mean I could understand how Hillary could make $100,000 with no money down in 'cattle futures' but now I'm starting to get suspicious!

People no longer even blink at corruption they just want to get 'theirs'!

What a country.

sad but true....this is why politicians love our stupid two party system and why there are no term limits....the average honest person cannot afford to run for office and sadly that is exactly what we need instead of these self serving excuses for good americans...these people are why this country is in such sad shape and why lobbyists and big business run this country and the middle class (who pay most of the taxes proportionately) are suffering...note how the stock market is continually being bailed out and big business is being bailed out while people cannot get jobs, cannot pay their bills and cannot live as they once did....

They are both disgusting-charitable giving my ass-they gave to their own foundation

And what does his foundation do for others? You know Terese Heinz Kerry manages a large foundation she inherited when her husband Sen. Heinz was killed an airplane crash. She does lots of wonderful work through that foundation. All the foundations set up by very rich people do good things for others. Obamicans have their brains up where the sun don't shine. The reactionary negative response to anything Clinton shows they are sheeple.....just like the Right-wing machines.

First of all, the Clintons bought their first home when he retired from living in pubic houseing (WH)....which Bill admits was the best the government could offer, but up to that time they were in public service, (Obama bought a $2 million dollar home on a state legislators salary with a little help from his friends........Resko, you know the guy indicted in Chicago)

True to form you Obaminations can find something to criticise...."he gave the charitable contributions to his own foundation." Before you speak find out what his foundation does. Africans don't love him so much because he is a "just a pretty face"

I was present at a hotel hosting a Hillary speaking engagement. She arrived with a large motorcade. They made a high speed entry into the hotel garage. The door slammed shut behind them.

The hotel was a hermetically sealed environment with no relationship to the surrounding streets. Populating the streets were normal people, bums, prostitutes, substance abusers, etc.

More hermetically sealed environments were observed during a multi-month, cross country trip. This trip was made on the surface via bicycle and Amtrak. Through Idaho, Montana, Virginia, to the Potomac; I observed gated communities consisting four thousand-plus square foot "homes." Some of these communities were located on what was Montana ranches and farms of Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Many were "vacation homes."

In Montana, I asked a local about the ownership one community. He rattled off the names of various high government officials, celebrities, businessmen, etc. Here is where secure community members hunt, hobnob, relax, play golf, etc. There a significant social distance between between the surrounding community members and the hermetically sealed gated environments.

I see no relationship between me and any political celebrity. I may be available for their photo-op or to serve them in some minor capacity. However, I can't comprehend these people breathing the same air as me. The political celebrities may posture and pontificate. They may shout slogans and make promises. However, they remain loyal to their powerful and privileged community. I remain on the street and the surrounding environs.
