NEW YORK — Retail gas prices surged to a new record above $3.30 a gallon Friday and appear poised to rise further in coming weeks as gasoline supplies tighten.

Oil prices, meanwhile, supported the gas price rally by jumping more than $2 a barrel after a dismal employment report sent the dollar lower.

At the pump, gas prices rose 1.4 cents overnight to a national average of $3.303 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. That's the latest in a series of records, and about 60 cents higher than a year ago.

While oil's surge above $100 over the last month has boosted gas prices so far this year, analysts now expect gas prices to continue rising regardless of what direction crude takes. The Energy Department expects prices to peak near $3.50 a gallon later in the spring, but many analysts predict the spike could approach $4.

That's because gasoline supplies are falling, in part because producers are cutting back on output of the fuel due to the high cost of crude _ the more expensive crude is, the more refiners have to pay and the lower their profits are. They're also in the process of switching over from producing winter grades of gasoline to the less polluting but more expensive grade of fuel they're required to sell in the summer.

"That cuts back on some of the supply and helps to pump up the price," said Mike Pina, a spokesman for AAA.

The margin between the price refiners pay for crude and receive for selling the products they make from it is around $11 to $12 a barrel right now, according to the Oil Price Information Service. However, that margin has occasionally slipped into negative territory in recent weeks and is well below margins of $37 a barrel refiners earned last spring.

On Thursday, ConocoPhillips said high crude prices were significantly hurting its refining margins. Last week, Valero Energy Corp. cut output at its Corpus Christi, Texas, refinery due to high supplies and falling demand. Analysts believe many other refiners are adopting similar tactics.

Friday's price spike is a sign those cutbacks may be working, giving everyone in the supply chain, from refiners to retailers, the ability to raise prices to try to boost margins. Many gas retailers say they make more on the sale of coffee and sundries in their convenience stores than from selling gasoline.

Of course, that's not good news for consumers also paying higher food prices and watching their home values slide. Food prices are high due in part to diesel prices, which held steady overnight at a national average of $4.023 a gallon, near recent records.

High oil prices are also hurting airlines. Aloha Airlines shut down and ATA Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in recent weeks, citing high fuel prices as a cause of their failures.

In futures trading, meanwhile, oil futures rose Friday after the Labor Department said employers cut payrolls by 80,000 jobs last month, much more than analysts had expected. The unemployment rate rose to 5.1 percent. That news sent the dollar lower and pushed light, sweet crude for May delivery up $2.40 to settle at $106.23 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gasoline futures for May delivery rose 3.24 cents to settle at $2.7567 a gallon.

Gasoline futures were also boosted Friday by a fire that shut down part of a Los Angeles refinery.

Much of crude's price moves in recent months have been tied to the dollar. Many investors view crude, gold and other hard commodities as hedges against a falling dollar and rising prices. Also, crude becomes less expensive for overseas investors when the dollar is falling.

In other Nymex trading Friday, May heating oil futures rose 6.93 cents to settle at $2.9921 a gallon, while May natural gas futures fell 9.5 cents to settle at $9.322 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, May Brent crude futures rose $2.38 to settle at $104.90 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Stop whining about the oil companies whos margins are very thin on gas. Try bitching about the government taxes on a single gallon of gas. Try bitching at the largest recipient of money from a gallon of gas which would be the state and federal government.

Come on DemocRATs you are in charge. Lower the gas prices. I though you were in charge.

Only 15% of the cost of gasoline is taxes, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

I suggest you turn off Rush Limbaugh, get out of the conservative fantasy bubble, and try to learn more about the real world.

And also, that tax money goes to build and maintain roads. Without a decent road infrastructure, we wouldn't have much of an economy. With all the screwed up things that government spends money on, roadways are actually one of the bext uses taxpayer dollars. Even the money going to the so called "bridge to nowhere" at 200 million dollars, would only fund the Iraq war for half a day.

People drive too much anyway.

Maybe higher gas prices will make them give up the gas guzzlers and figure out how to get around without driving 1000 miles a week.

My old station wagon is very clean, has 106, 000 miles on it , is cheap to insure, has tons of emission control on it, has overdrive and cruise control, is recycled as I bought it used 6 years ago with 80,000 mi. on it, doubles frequently as a truck, hauls a s**tload of people, is cheap and easy to self repair, has a smaller engine than previuos years, has a great working stereo for my jazz, is of little interest to would-be auto and/or stereo thieves and I could live in it if I had to. Haven't had a car payment for 30 years and with insurance of $42 per month, I really don't give a ratzazz what gas costs. I can afford it. AND, the best part is it is totally unique on the road with all those millionduplet cars people buy in hopes it enhances their image, and they'll feel good about themselves, I guess. But," A car isn't a decent status symbol any more..." every inner city drug lord drives a mercedes or jag and the local laundomats and thrift store parking lots are full of expensive new SUVs, trucks and sportscars. "A kid in Harvard or Yale, now THAT'S status symbol!" It would terrify me to own one of the new cars you can't even service yourself, in a world where ANYTHING can happen.

Wow, aren't you wonderful. You're still blasting gasoline through your carburetor at an obscene rate. How about leaving a few gallons for our future generations.

I wonder why the trolls on this sight think that Anwar oil will be sold in the US. And that it will drive prices down. I guess they trust oil companies. LOL

$3.30 a gallon? in NZ we pay NZ$1.86 per LITRE.
Thats nearing 3/4 more what you pay. And you guys, the biggest reason why our prices are high, are whining?
We should be trading with Venezueala.

Right: the poor oil companies have no choice but to make record profits off of the price of gas.

Please go to the Department of Energy wed site the Energy Information Agency and sign up for your weekly inventory report. See for your self that the writter of this article is a bold faced lier. The propaganda line that supply is low is in direct opposition to the facts. We are close to record highs in domestic supply of gasoline and refiners have cut back production to under 82% of capacity to bring inventories down that have risen as a result of reduced demand. This is clasic market price manipulation and illegal by all standards in U.S. commercial anti trust law.

ABOLISH this criminal government, start the process in Philadelphia at 9am Independence Hall on April 19th at the Constitutional Convention.

I agree. Also the oil companies are messing with the supply and demand. They cut the supply in order to create more demand. Now that is Capitalism in its best form.

The highest prices are actually in the Blue States.

The taxes and stringent environmental regulations that are Native to Blue States, insure that you pay more at the pump there. It's no accident that the first sighting of Gas over five bucks a gallon happened in Bluest California.

Anyway, it is the Blue Side of the Aisle, that is asking for more laws and taxes, to curb Global "Warming" by raising gas prices even further. (The very Blue resistance, to allowing more drilling and building more refineries contributes to these shortages as well.)

Certainly if oil prices are controlled by Ironic justice, it SHOULD be the most expensive in the Blue communities.

Oh really? I just paid 2.95 a gallon for gas in New Jersey. When I drove through North and South Carolina recently, I paid over 3.30 a gallon.

Sorry, but gas was $19/barrel while your personal devil Bill Clinton was president. It's been under the Oil president and vice oil president that oil has gone up to over $100/barrel, due mostly to their stupid war in the Middle East. BTW: even if they started drilling for oil in Alaska wildlife refuges today, it would be at least 5 YEARS before any gas reached American pumps.

Can't wait to thow the bums (republicans) out in November.

I live in California and I agree. We need to decrease our consumption and the best way to do this is to increase price. I hope we hit $5 per gallon soon.

This article repeats the conventional supply and demand rationale that we always hear when fuel prices spike. During past spikes this might have been true to some extent, although the urge to make fast billions must infect the operational policies of oil executives (they owe it to their shareholders).

According to Business Week, the current spike is happening in the face of lowering demand and record supply numbers.

Please see the blazing piece by Ed Wallace at Business Week: http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/apr2008/bw2008041_945564.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index_businessweek+exclusives

The energy companies are engaged in a nihilistic pursuit of profits at the moment that threatens the overall economy perhaps more than anything the mortgage financing felons might have done. Yeah, it will speed the transition to other forms of energy and greater efficiency, but in the meantime....

Last night I watched a show on the aircraft carrier Enterprise, and the pilots who fly over Iraq every day. These flights take thousands of pounds of fuel each. Could it be that all the fuel the chimp is using to find those nasty WMD's is lowering supplies?
Oh never mind, Iraqi oil is paying for everything..right?
hehe
