A new assessment of U.S. policy in Iraq by the same experts who advised the original Iraq Study Group concludes that political progress is "so slow, halting and superficial" and political fragmentation "so pronounced" that the United States is no closer to being able to leave Iraq than it was a year ago.

The experts were reassembled by the U.S. Institute of Peace, which convened the congressionally mandated Iraq Study Group, a high-level panel that assessed U.S. policy in Iraq and offered recommendations in 2006. The new report predicts that lasting political development could take five to 10 years of "full, unconditional commitment" to Iraq, but also cautions that future progress may not be worth the "massive" human and financial costs to the United States.

Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish Parties Close Ranks Against Al-Sadr's Movement in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraq's major Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish parties have closed ranks to force anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to disband his Mahdi Army militia or leave politics, lawmakers and officials involved in the effort said Sunday.

Such a bold move risks a violent backlash by al-Sadr's Shiite militia. But if it succeeds it could cause a major realignment of Iraq's political landscape.

The first step will be adding language to a draft election bill banning parties that operate militias from fielding candidates in provincial balloting this fall, the officials and lawmakers said. The government intends to send the draft to parliament within days and hopes to win approval within weeks.

"We, the Sadrists, are in a predicament," lawmaker Hassan al-Rubaie said Sunday. "Even the blocs that had in the past supported us are now against us and we cannot stop them from taking action against us in parliament."

Do I get this right: al-Sadr was the ONLY ONE in Iraq to hold the seize-fire for almost a year now, who devours his entire means to re-building shattered neighborhoods, to public services and, public healthcare and, who constantly calls for a UNITED Iraq - in complete contrast to the parties you mention, who ALL would only be too glad, if Iraq would go through - at least - a soft partition, if not right being cut in a. one Kurdish; b. one Sunni; and c. one Shiite country?

The motives of said parties, who call al-Sadr "to order" - (what a joke!) - are crystal clear. They are arguing for their own profit, while following their master's voice - USA. Obviously, USA's "divide and rule" finally has found three monkeys, who are willing to dance and smirk after their master's tune, to fetch the crumbs of bread from their master's table in reward, at last!

"...cautions that future progress may not be worth the "massive" human and financial costs to the United States."

Suppose McCain will read -- and comprehend -- this report? Suppose W, Cheney, Condi and Bill will get it? Having asked that, we already know the answer. Why bother to even ask when we're in bed with the Saudis -- and Halliburton and Blackwater are slobbering at the trough.

What Americans refuse to understand is that in Iraq like much of the Middle East, the culture always wins. By that I mean there is No American who is going to get men from these countries to sell their own people out and they may not even sell their enemies out. I believe when Americans leave the room, Iraqis' laugh at our feeble attempts to define their future. Their history, their culture is so different from how Americans prefer to see the world. And when we do not honor their culture, they will toy with us and would probably chose death over being forced to follow our lead. I have no doubt they think George Bush is a complete fool. Not so much because he started this irresponsible war, but because he thought/thinks he can somehow manage the aftermath. There is this presumptive air about Americans, who think we are smarter than these people. 9/11 should have ended that misconception, but it didn't. Too many Americans choose to believe the terrorists were just lucky...

Uruk and Ninive in Mesopotamia were founded 4000 to 5000 years ago. And IN 4000 to 5000 years from today, there will still be living people in Mesopotamia, who will be not so much different from today's iraqi people; and who will tell their children at nights, how humiliating those days of 4000 - 5000 years ago for the big conquering army from America were, and how feeble this Army looked, when it finally went to a full, unconditional retread, because it had suffered full moral, military and financial defeat from the proud people living in the cradle of civillsation.

Get used to be sung about in arab heroic songs as the foreigh tyrants who bit the dust, USA. It's David vs. Goliath reloaded. But this time, David's sling will be an AK 47 Kalashnikov.

Those people have a different understanding of "time", than we have: They can wait. One day, sooner or later, the "Surge" will be over and dried up. And then, they just shake the dust from their clothes, and start their lives all over again.

Oh my god, on CNN last night they showed some fighting in Sadr City. The americans were looking for the Iraq soldiers, finally found them, they were having lunch during the fighting The americans had to tell them 3 times, through and interpreter to go first and fight and that the americans would back them up. It was soo pathetic, and is a poster that screams, get the hell out of there. They came back, two Iraq's had been wounded and they said they killed one of the insurgents. But, the americans can't even be sure to believe them or not. It is obvious, other than getting a check, the Iraq's aren't really there emotionally.

And think, it only took a panel of experts over a year to state what was completely obvious before the Surge (TM) even started.

This may sound cold but why should we continue to remain in a political fragmented country. If they are not even trying to find a way to work together political. Its time to GET OUT. Its basic common sense. Is oil the reason that we are so Obsessed with this country that we refuse to get out and continue to remain in civil war. Its ridiculous that these young men and women are dying because of the pride of a fascist government just RIDICULOUS.

This war NEEDS to end. I will NOT vote for anyone who wont end this war Right away. I dont care if its dangerous to end right away. Staying there indefinitely pose more danger. This country is being run by IDIOTS.

ten steps that "fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders [employ to] seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies." The ten steps are:
1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
2. Create a gulag
3. Develop a thug caste
4. Set up an internal surveillance system
5. Harass citizens' groups
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
7. Target key individuals
8. Control the press
9. Dissent equals treason
10. Suspend the rule of law

Yeah, yeah - "Neocon-Macchiavellism". That's it. Neocon-Macchiavellism hits the nail on it's head.

Macchiavelli would be proud of these sorcerer's apprentices. And Richelieu would. And di Medici would, too.

BUT: THOSE AT LEAST HAD STYLE! The today's macchiavellian dwarfs, instead, only have greed, and - incompentence to offer.

There is no such thing as a working surge, a political improvement or a chance of the US staying in Iraq without a conflagration in the area. We need to get out now, leave troops at the embassy if we must, but quite frankly the Iraqi people and those in countries adjacent hate our presence and are fiercely angry that we are there.

The don't want American troops there period.

dear neocon43,
perhaps you're unaware of the numerous difficulties many soldiers are having, adjusting to life back home. also, people going from one form of tyranny to another form of tyranny, coupled with lawlessness and occupation by an imperial power, do not consider themselves liberated. denial is not going to work.

Have you fallen off your chair from lighting hitting your ass from that lie. we killed people to free them from a person Americans brought to power in the first place, so we could fight back IRAN for taking our Americans hostage when President Carter was in Office.

Now we are in a civil war. For nothing iPolitics says, they didn't die for nothing, they died for Oil and military type jobs, we in America do not have that many jobs left.

Accomplishment?
Did you read the article, or do you just jump into the comments?

Allow me to sumarize:
In the span of a full year (a year is defined to be the time required for the Earth to complete one full orbit around the sun -- despite what Bush may have told you about the heavens and the holy ghost creature), no measurable progress (zero, meaning the number of angels which actually do exist on the head of a pin) has been made to enable extraction from Iraq.

In the interest of space I leave the following induction as an exercise for the solver: show that, at this rate, we will never be ready to leave Iraq (in other words, right on McCain's schedule, despite what Bush may have told you about a second coming).

If you got a different result, this is perhaps because your bible tells you that the supreme being character considers pi equal to three (3), when in fact it is -- hold on to your Bill O'reilly lapel -- an irrational number.

"Behold, as wild asses in the wilderness, they go forth."

Baker, Hamilton et al did GWB a big favor, threw him a lifeline with the Iraq Study Group Report.

Their recommendations were excellent--including "don't cherry-pick, they're ALL important."

Unfortunately, he's too stupid, too stubborn, too much an unpatriotic ignoramus to have used the suggestions they offered.

I'm glad they're still being honest about the results in Iraq of the disasterous GWB presidency. No more whitewashes are needed.
