Mark Penn Resigns As Chief Strategist For Clinton Campaign

Mark Penn Resigns

Huffington Post   First Posted: 4/14/08 Updated: 5/25/11

Mark Penn, Sen. Hillary Clinton's chief strategist and longtime confidant stepped down from the presidential campaign late Sunday night.

His resignation came after a politically embarrassing week during which it was reported that he met with Colombia's ambassador to the U.S. to discuss passage of a bilateral free-trade agreement -- a pact Clinton opposes.

Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the campaign who will now coordinate Clinton's "strategic message" told the Huffington Post that Penn offered up his resignation to the Senator on Sunday and that she accepted. Penn's firm, however, will continue to be involved in the campaign's polling.

In a separate statement issued from the Clinton's office, campaign manager Maggie Williams wrote:

"After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign."

CNN reports that the Clintons have been disappointed with Penn over the affair and that Penn decided over the weekend to resign.

Penn and Clinton have a lengthy history dating back to her time as first lady. In 1996, the strategist famously targeted "soccer moms" to help then President Clinton get reelected. Penn took the reigns of Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign in New York and was credited with helping her overcome high negative ratings to win in a state where she had no geographic roots.

This campaign season, however, has been, by most measures, a rocky one. His belittlement of Obama's wins in "Red" and caucus states had been met with backlash from some in the Democratic Party. And throughout the course of the campaign he has bickered -- occasionally in public -- with fellow staff.

His continued work with the firm Burson-Marsteller has proved particularly problematic. At the time he was criticizing Sen. Barack Obama for ties to the energy-giant Exelon, Penn, it was reported, was also representing that company. In addition, he has been involved with a list of businesses embroiled in deep-seated labor disputes including, as the Huffington Post reported, New Era Cap.

After meeting with Colombia's ambassador this past week, Penn tried his hand at damage control, calling the move an error in judgment. The next day, Colombia fired him and his firm. This weekend, seven labor unions representing the "Change to Win" coalition called for Clinton to fire Penn. And On Meet the Press this morning, another Clinton surrogate, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, hinted that Penn's time with Clinton was nearing an end. Asked whether, in the wake of the Colombia mess, the campaign should considering Penn's firing, Rendell said, in essence: there were more, equally egregious offenses?

"Well there are a lot of issues in which you can raise that question, Tim," Rendell told host Tim Russert. "I think you've got to make it very clear for someone who is a consultant, who you are rep and who you are not rep. and I would hope that Mr. Penn when he talked to the Colombian's made that clear. And it doesn't sound to me like he did and that's something the campaign should take into question."

Changing Penn's title without really changing his role is just one more Clinton lie. But what would you expect? Penn and Bill are on team Columbia together. Since the money Bill takes in goes into their joint account, Hillary is on that team too!

I don't understand the lack of Union leadership outrage over this situation with Mark Penn in the Clinton campaign. All she did was "shuffle the deck" so to speak. This guy is still gonna do polling and provide "advice". Mark Penn needs to be GONE! I cannot put any trust in Clinton that she has the best interests of American union members at heart as long as she refuses to part with this guy. And neither should the leadership of any union. I don't understand all the wailing about Obama's unpaid advisor's comments to some Canadian official, while the leader of Clinton's campaign is holding strategy meetings to get this onerous Columbian legislation passed? She is basically spitting in the eye of the unions by moving this guy to the back room for a while till the heat (what little of it that has been generated) dies down. Is union leadership so in love with (or in fear of) the Clintons that they accept this with nary a whimper? WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? The AFL-CIO ought to be hounding Clinton night and day to make a complete break with this guy. Can someone explain to me why that is not happening?

Karl Rove practically endorsed Hillary. Like all smart people, he sees Obama as a fraud and Hillary is the lesser of the evils. I think Hillary has run a terrible campaign and I am embearrased for her, but I am scared of Obama having any real power besides getting kids all excited to go vote. If Obama wins the nomination, McCain gets my vote.

Mark Penn is "fired", so he is still doing conference calls to the media for the Clinton campaign. He is arguing she does not have a problem with "trustworthiness".

Yeah, he's gone

Demoted Hillary Clinton strategist Mark Penn may no longer have the coveted title of chief strategist, but he remains a key member of the campaign's senior staff.

Mr. Penn took part on the campaign's morning message call this morning, as usual.

This afternoon, he is also scheduled to be on a call with Clinton and other aides to begin to prepare for Saturday's presidential debate in Philadelphia.

Mr. Penn "is still going to be very much involved," a senior campaign official said.

Indeed, it is not clear precisely what Mr. Penn's title-change entails, other than a public rebuke, although the official said that "there is a difference between being in charge and being one of many voices.

I suppose Hillary won't have (Mark) Penn to kick around after dropping the primary in Penn. She got undone in Penn by Penn.

Here's a different angle: Clinton needs a boost in reputation. She needs a really big moment of honor. She 's been called a liar and is too much seen as a spectacle of opportunism and entitlement. What would someone who thinks like Rove do to change the tone of the campaign, lift Clinton's goodness meter rating, and make doubting Pennsylvania voters trust her again? One scenario: Get the governor of Pennsylvania to scold an adviser who without asking the Clintons to make a trip to Columbia and to meet with government officials about NAFTA. Is that even possible? The public will buy the sensation. This great error on the part of Penn will divert attention away from Clinton's recent errors and allow her to defend her alleged position on NAFTA. How can anyone dispute her position now? Not after she fires her political guru. Let’s not forget the call to resign was made by the governor of Pennsylvania and not New York or Illinois. The results are in: The move helps the governor and Clinton to appear on the side of labor fully. (Has either of these two ever supported a union strike?) It also raises the needle on the integrity scale for both. It puts juice into the campaign. It gives Clinton supporters hope if they were losing it. A perfect show to regain voter confidence and get voters in Pennsylvania to vote for Clinton. Not to mention those in the remaining 9 states.

The Clinton campaign needs to fire its dietician.

It seems Penn is not as "resigned" as we're supposed to believe.

Of course he is.

I think he should meet the same fate as Penn, because he is not that effective. He is not influencing anybody or changing anyodys mind.

Moving on.

Hey if the media shovels it out and replays it often enough for the people they will believe it as truth. Sad Clintonist strategy.

Isn't it ironic that Mark Penn gets canned from the Clinton campaign as head advisor . This being right before the PENNsylvania primary. Incidentally , Pennsylvania was named after none other than William Penn, a champion of democracy back in the late 1700s. I am a staunch Hillary Clinton supporter , but I have to admit this may not be a smart move. Democrats are very astute and I am sure most of the democrats voting in the Pennsylvania primary are well aware of whom there state was named .

And Hillary's recent trends away from democracy (her supporters threatening Pelosi, her suggesting Pleded Delegates don't adhere to the vote results) can't help either.
03:43 PM on 04/07/2008
Speaking of trends she acts like fascism is the new black. Her corporate agenda put herself and her foreign and domestic investors first and the people last.

OBAMA 08!
02:42 PM on 04/07/2008
Senator Obama has GAINED 56 Super Delegates since Super Tuesday (Feb. 5th), and Senator Clinton has LOST five. Senator Obama is gaining on average one Super Delegate a day! He is now only thirty Super Delegates behind Senator Clinton, but if he maintains his average, he will have most of those he needs to tie Senator Clinton by the end of the month, and could even exceed her lead.
