BusinessWeek:

As the Democratic Presidential hopefuls approach Pennsylvania's Apr. 22 vote, Senator Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) campaign, trailing in statewide polls, is set to get a shot in the arm. Later this week, a small band of independent Obama supporters plans to launch another new fund-raising Web site, AnObamaMinute.com, with the goal of raising $1 million dollars in one minute.

Last week the Obama camp announced it had raised $40 million in March alone, nearly twice the amount raised by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) during the same period. In all, he has raised some $234 million. Through February, Clinton's campaign had raised $156 million.

AnObamaMinute.com calls for pledgers (who can pre-register) to register a donation within 60 seconds, at 1pm on Apr. 21.

Let us throw the bums out of the White House now. Come 2012 we throw out the other bums
in congress and senate. Let us clean house! We mean it!.

Those of us in the Obama movement are listening to the "What's Goin' On" of the other side and are laughing with glee. We see $1,000,000 in a minute for Obama. Please, only a million, we could do much better then that. We are the grassroots, and we have the power. I love it! $1,000,000 is a drop in the bucket to what we could do in the grassroots after he gets the nomination.
I don't even think Republicans realize not only the money, but the independent groups that have been forming - calling, talking the issues, and taking the fight to our friends on the other side.
This really is a movement. It's so under the radar, a story here or there, but when your on the ground you've got the support. People come out of the wood work just to help.
The greatest thing, of course, is wearing the Obama pin. Everyone will comment.
Someone should tell these people, we could easily do more then a million. We could make it $5, or $10 million and do the "Shock & Awe" strategy... I guess we'll wait until the general election for that.

I suggest you send your money directly to Obama. AnObamaMinute sounds like a great get rich quick scheme. How does find out if this is legit?

If some of these ads attribute to him beating McCain in the general election I'll donate a whole paycheck.

This is getting out of hand... He already has more money than he can possibly spend before the primary season is over. He already has TV ads in all the remaining contest states, different ones, offices everywhere and he still wants more? Guess the real middle name for this guy is "Greedy". I hope that voters in the upcoming primaries are fed up with Obama-spots and that saturation sets in quickly.

This should be an election where arguements count. Nevertheless, it turns more and more into a bazaar. Wanna buy a vote and I make you a special price...

You're right, bish66. I'll put it at the top of the list.

Hillary's "Unimportant" List
fund raising
Democrats in small states
Democrats in caucus states
Democrats in states with large African-American populations
Democrats in "red" states
Democrats in states she's lost
Democrats in states that Bill didn't win in '92
the truth
credibility
the Democratic Party

Did I miss anything?

There's a significant difference between how Obama raises money and how Clinton raises money.

Obama has expanded the electorate and his own support base, building relationships with voters across the country and taking in small donations from huge numbers of people. This large base allows him to tap into potential financial resources again and again without the worry of maxing out individual donor caps each quarter.

Clinton has not expanded her base and instead relies on funding coming from a small number of donors that max our the quarterly cap as well as large bundlers and special interests that can push money in her direction. But there are only so many of these type of donors. Unfortunately for Clinton, this top-down approach, is tapping out.

Obama's approach on the other hand works again and again, because his base is enormous.

Oh, and us 20-something college kids may not have mortgages, but we do have children, wives, college loans, car loans, insurance payments, utility bills, gas bills and groceries (among other things) to think about.

I beg to differ, I have a home and a kid and I'm a supporter of Obama. I may not give as much as I want to the campaign, but the democratic election is important. This campaign affects my life way more than a latte here and there. If "irresponsible" is categorized as being involved with politics enough to support ANY candidate for public office and spending money they have on a campaign because they believe the politician will have even a SMALL part to play in their future, then I hope more citizens are as "irresponsible" about their individual candidates.

To say that only the rich or corporations or lobbyist are responsible for campaign funds and politics in general is what got us here in the first place.

I may not be a baby boomer, but along with many of my friends in their 30s, I have a mortage, three kids, and a mountain of student loans. I am currenly working two jobs to make ends meet.

However, I stil send 25 dollars a paycheck to the Obama Campain. We are not all young hipsters.

viva las irresponsibles.

Every time I get an email from the Clinton group to contribute, I feel so badly that as a single mom with two sons in college I really cannot afford to give right now. I want Hillary to win, so how much I contribute has nothing to do with how much I want her to win.

The fact is that Hillary's base is mostly people who have homes and kids. The fact is that Obama's base is mostly made up of younger people who, let's face it, are also the ones who can afford great clothes and cars because they have few other things to spend their money on. I wish the media would point this out.

But the most important thing to remember is that the nomination should not go to the person who spent the most money on TV ads, but to the person best suited to be the next Commander-in-Chief, whether it's Obama or Clinton. MONEY is not the candidate, so let's not be so swayed by the amount of money raised.

"I wish the media would point this out."

Another 20+20-something Obama supporter with a mortgage, a child, and plenty of bills here and I don't think it's the media's job to spread inaccurate stereotypes about the people supporting the Senator from Illinois.

"MONEY is not the candidate, so let's not be so swayed by the amount of money raised."

Until we enact some kind of comprehensive election finance reform the ability to raise money is an important measure of a candidate's viability. Of course, since this is yet ANOTHER race that Hillary is losing by a country mile, we shouldn't be "swayed" by the Obama campaign's unprecedented fund raising abilities, right? Nice try.

I think it has become a game. I think people should save their money to pay their mortgages -- oh yeah, college students and twenty-somethings don't usually have mortgages ... or children to take care of for that matter. And let's face the facts, Clinton's base mostly consists of more responsible people, people who have more responsibilities to pay for.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:11 PM on 04/08/2008

Right. Definitely. Obama supporters are a bunch of irresponsible youngsters with not a care or a bill in the world. Keep telling yourself that if it makes you somehow feel superior. But just an FYI--this Obama supporter has a mortgage, is saving to put two kids through college and hasn't been a twenty something for twenty something years.

The Clinton's did cost most Americans their jobs. Hillary now says anything to get her coronated but people can see how she does the flip flop, the double speak, and don't forget the misspeaking.
Why would anyone support someone who for the last 35 years accumulated a long list of
employees who committed suicide?

So now we're attacking supporter's fundraisers? Are we going to start targeting Mayors and Senators for holding fundraiser dinners at 2300 bucks a plate too?

I'm in.

This is THE reason why I like OBAMA so much.

You see all politicians are employees.

The problem for our country over the last too long is that the employer has been big business.

Now the employer is the American people 1 $20 bill at a time.

Hurry up and get in office though. These $20 bills are running out fast.

Did you READ the story? It says "a group of INDEPENDENT OBAMA SUPPORTERS" are doing this. This has 'publicity stunt' written all over it. Not bad as stunts go, btw -- but this is not HIS idea. Oh, and incidentally, using stunts or other things like this as a fundraising 'gimmick' is as old as fundraising itself.

Obama is the man who wants to bring everyone together which should include his supporters when it comes to this much money. And please refresh my memory -- when was the last time someone used the $1-mllion in a minute gimmick?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:51 PM on 04/08/2008

I did not say that THIS PARTICULAR stunt was as old as fundraising itself (which would be impossible given the fact it's being done online) -- I said "using stunts (a generic reference) or other things like this..."

I think Obama raising $55 million in the month of February was his campaigns biggest Stunt of all.

Obama should be CEO of a multi-national corporation if he feels this way about money. Unemployment is high, mortgages are defaulting, people lack health care, and Obama wants to run this kind of of financing frenzy? I hope none of those college students are giving him money from all the loans they have needed to take out!

Your linkage of campaign fundraising to our current national economic problems is absurd; regardless of whether it's internal or external to Obama's campaign.

By the way; this is an independent volunteer effort; not connected to Obama's campaign at all.
