Gordon Brown

Times UK:

Gordon Brown became an unintentional standard-bearer for pro-Tibet campaigners today after being wrongly praised by Hillary Clinton for boycotting the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

The British media have treated the confirmation by No 10 yesterday of his plans not to attend the opening ceremony as an important foreign policy move, leading to reports around the world that he had snubbed China.

From dolts who like to complain about Obama taking hits over what they deem "non stories", you all seem very petty and hypocritical about stupid shit like this.

"Another Round of Beer for the whole country my husband and I are rich and can afford to bribe the voters.

Here Here, a toast to my dear friend and president G. W. Bush I told you I would help you launch a war against Iraq, didn't I stand up and applaud when you said the surge was working in your state of the union address."

A month ago there was widespread reporting of Gordon's "absolute determination" to attend the opening ceremony. Now we are being told about "Mr Brown’s longstanding decision to attend the closing ceremony and not the opening" - a longstanding decision which nobody had heard of until now. Number 10 is following its usual pattern of deliberate obfuscation - never reporting Gordon's actual words because that would tie him down too much the next time he wants to do a U-turn. It's always "a close colleague of the Prime Minister says this", "an unnamed spokeswoman says that". Is it really any wonder that Hillary Clinton was as confused as everyone else?

All this tells us about Hillary is that she doesn't know Gordon. If she did, she would never make the mistake of assuming he had done something on principle. To do something on principle, it is necessary to have principles. But assuming the best of someone, even when that assumption is absolutely unmerited, isn't such a bad thing. False praise is a huge improvement on the false condemnation which is the usual traffic of US politicians.

I'm against Hillary, because she voted for an unprincipled war, but I'd rather see her being attacked for that and other valid and important reasons. Nitpicking is just going to further divide the Democratic party and further cement the already all-but-certain Republican victory.

Is it not too much to ask for Hillary Clinton to read a newspaper?

Hillary just mis-heard Prime Minister Brown about his Olympic plans. She couldn't make out what he was saying because of all the sniper fire she's been evading.

You don't see the Obama campaign jumping into the limelight, pointed fingers thrust in the air about how much Hillary is misrepresenting facts.

Of course no Hillary fan here will acknowledge this.

Her Hillaryship will say ANYTHING as long as she can stay in the media. It does not have to be the truth for her. I don't think she knows the truth when she hears it.

Perhaps we need to investigate Hillary's age in relation to the job of President as we need to about McCain - clearly - they both seem to be becoming more and more forgetful and simply wrong about facts.

I don't know what upsets me more, this story or the one about Rob Lowe - no, I'm wrong on both counts, the story that upsets me is the one where Senator Obama demeans the blue collar voters of Pennsylvania - you know when he thought he was talking in confidence to people who were going to donate money to his campaign -

This story uses some overly dramatic terms, but it is not demeaning-- it's pretty accurate. His remarks hold true about many smaller towns in Pa.
The writer "spent a few weekends" in Pa. I've lived there. Outside the urban areas of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia is another world.

The capital? Harrisburg. An unhappy little city, racially divided. The small towns? Oh yes plenty of guns and no shortage of religion, just like the gentleman said. And-- he has a sound rationale for saying it. Too bad many voters don;t want to be treated as adults.

This non-story about Sen. Clinton is also a bunch of trumped-up much ado about nothing. She is entitled to say whatever she wants about Brown. If his office is keeping mum about any deeper reason, so be it.

We voters must grow up and think for ourselves.

Why is this a big deal? I actually live in London and every political source and connoisseur has said that the only reason Gordon Brown (who is even more despised in the UK that Hillary can ever be in the US) is attending the closing ceremony is because we have the Olympics next. He was deeply, DEEPLY embarrassed by the protesting that took place during the London leg of the torch race and there's a very real possibility that he may not even be PM by the time the Games roll around.

The reason the U.K headline read "Hillary Clinton embarrasses Gordon Brown" is because everyone over here knows that Gordon does not want to go to the Games at all unless China sorts out it's Human Rights problem. However, he also cannot publicly state that he will not go due to the Tibet situation because, like all politicians in power, he cannot sever ties with China as so much of our economy now relies on China as well as the U.S

so, Hillary was right to praise him, as he *is* boycotting the opening ceremony, it's just that this is not the official line being peddled to the media. Anyone who knows how Downing Street spin works, knows this to be the case.

God help America if President Hill has to make any big decisions when she's tired... like at 3am, for example.
