The Boss Picks A Boss: Bruce Springsteen Endorses Obama

Huffington Post   First Posted: 4/24/08 Updated: 5/25/11

Bruce Obama

Legendary all-American rocker Bruce Springsteen has thrown his red bandanna into the political ring, today endorsing Barack Obama for President on his website. Wrote Bruce:

Like most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest.

He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."

The endorsement seems to have been prompted by Obama's recent comments about Pennsylvanians being "bitter" and "clinging" to guns and various prejudices, first reported by the Huffington Post — and seems to take a swipe at Hillary Clinton in his endorsement:

At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships. While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams of My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment.

So: Anyone who thinks that Barack Obama doesn't respect his small-town fellow Americans can take it up with the guy who wrote "Born In The U.S.A." (and "Thunder Road," and "The River," and "Backstreets" and "Badlands" and pretty much a zillion classic songs about working-class life in small-town America).

What's interesting about this endorsement from a new media perspective: It went up on the Boss' website. That's where it broke, and from what I can tell we were the third site to pick it up (kudos to you, CBS News and Marc Ambinder). It's going to go huge, obviously, and it's gonna happen before noon (cable news producers are digging up the stock footage now). That's a phenomenon unique to this election cycle, and yet another example of how lightning-fast the news cycle is. It's also a really interesting new wrench to throw into the "bitter" story, which has basically been running unchanged for the past six days — and this completely turns it on its head, making Obama the victim and Clinton the villain for trying to "distract us from discussing the real issues." Look for Springsteen on "Meet The Press" on Sunday. (Oh, my God, Tim would love that. For sure he has an old Boss concert hat to pull out.)

Springsteen, who memorably supported John Kerry in 2004 (i.e. in concert, and every Bruce concert is memorable), seems pretty intent on making his point:

After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.

Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President.

In other words, honey he's got the heart he's got the soul he needs control right now. I smell a collaboration with will.i.am in the offing.

Message From Bruce Springsteen
[BruceSpringsteen.net]

p.s. Or, how's this for another Bruce quote for Generation O: "I believe in the love that you gave me, I believe in the faith that can save me." Also from Badlands. Listen here.

p.p.s. Stop the presses! The ultimate Generation O quote, also from Badlands:

Talk about a dream
Try to make it real
You wake up in the night
With a fear so real
Spend your life waiting
For a moment that just don't come
Well, don't waste your time waiting!

Or, in other words, "Yes We Can."

Well, this is tough for me because I always use to admire who Bruce Springsteen sang for in support of electoral candidates. He has no experience, this Obama Barrack regarding foundation. Wasn't music rock superstar Springsteen actively into Al Gore's campaign? Why hasn't someone starred him in a film yet? He's so good looking, --- passionate. I am not here to listen to the sound of my own voice, except I always wanted to hear him sing live. Has anyone seen him live or know him ?...

This song has good rhythum

Oops! Should have also said that the Clinton supporters here also should not be trashing Springsteen. This is getting so ridiculous.

After reading another page of post here I can only say that it seems most here can't be much over the age of 12. Such juvenile drivel. I love Springsteen and his music and although I don't agree with him on his endorsement he certainly can endorse Obama without me trying to trash him. Now some of you more asinine types here are trashing Elton John because he supports Hillary and he's (gasp) not American. Why must there be so many insults and so much vitriol? It's childish and stupid. Elton John has owned a home in Atlanta for decades and pays taxes on property and income like we all do and if he wants to have an opinion and have a fundraiser what the hell does it matter?

Springsteen is washed up......And with any luck so is Obama

We can see how much it helped John Kerry win in 2004

Of course Bruce's best tune sounds like it was taken straight from Obama's book, "Dreams from my Father."

"I got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack
I went out for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don't know where it's flowing
I took a wrong turn and I just kept going."

When did it become a crime to have had an absent father, ElliotNC? Or, should I address you as Cotton Mather?

What's next, adulterers must wear scarlet A's on their blouse, while "bastards" & the children of "broken homes" must wear B's? Presumably Bill Clinton & John McCain will be first in line to have their A's pinned on. Of course, Clinton will have to leave some room on his suit coat for the B to go next to the A.

"According to Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2005, released by the U.S. Census Bureau in August, 2007, there are approximately 13.6 million single parents in the United States today, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.2 million children (approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U.S. today).

So what's the "average" single parent really like? According to the U.S. Census Bureau...

She is a Mother:

* Approximately 84% of custodial parents are mothers, and
* 16% of custodial parents are fathers"

I love and respect Bruce Springsteen. And am not surprised that after saying in February that he liked both candidates equally that he has decided to endorse Obama. It appears he did it now because he perceived Obama's words were being distorted and was getting beat up over his "bitter" and "clinging" remarks especially by the Clinton campaign. Bruce has always stood up for injustice and i feel it compelled him to stand up for Obama now. And I believe it is natural for Bruce and artists in general to feel a simpatico with Obama and his message. Artists are about dreams, longings and aspirations. And Obama speaks eloquently and passionately about them. I personally think Hillary would be a more effective and successful President in the snake pit of politics and governing than Obama. That is why I support her. Basically BO and HRC are on the same page about policies and issues that matter to me, and believe are for the good of our country. Even though it was like an arrow in my heart to here one of my heros going against my candidate of choice i still love and respect Bruce and Obama too.

Yeah. Bruce really put John Kerry over the top, didn't he?

Celeb endorsements mean nothing except breathless media reports.

I'm just so happy to see Bruce Springsteen take a stand, I want to share some of my favorite lyrics of his:

Now some folks, they're born into a good life
And other folks get it any way, any how.
Well, I lost my money and I lost my wife.
Them things don't seem to matter much to me now.

Tonight I'll be on that hill
'Cause I can't stop.
I'll be on that hill
With everything I've got
Where lives're on the line, where dreams are found and lost.
I'll be there on time
And I'll pay the cost
For wanting things that can only be found

In the darkness on the edge of town.

--from "Darkness on the Edge of Town", title track.

Go Bruce! Go Obama!

The Boss has spoken. I cannot say just how very proud I am of Bruce Springsteen. We need another Mount Rushmore and Bruce Springsteen's face should be one of the faces etched on it (the cover photo from "Magic" would work). That's how great he is. Tremendous songs, tremendous integrity, tremendous bravery, tremendously patriotic, tremendously real. And when he married the wrong woman, shortly thereafter he corrected himself and married the right one! Has anyone noticed that virtually all of the artists who'd performed in the 9/11 concert, "America: A Tribute to Heroes," have been either firmly supportive of Democratic candidates or neutral? Bruce, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young (he was for Obama before Obama even announced!), Alicia Keys, John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, the Dixie Chicks, Dave Matthews, Wyclef Jean, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi (for Hillary), Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (probably for the Democratic nominee), Paul Simon (for Christopher Dodd), Celine Dion (probably for Hillary), and Willie Nelson (for Dennis Kucinich). Something special happened that night, and Bruce led the broadcast, fittingly.

Man, I love it when I hear other Springsteen lovers out there expressing how much he's touched our lives. Mount Rushmore would be much cooler w/ Bruce up there, & that pic on "Magic" is my favorite. I've also noticed those performers supporting the Democrats. Actually, though Springsteen & John Mellencamp have been out there doing as much as possible to enlighten people politically without turning 'em off (think Bono).

Well, I guess your America doesn't agree with you Bruce.

I guess you didn't see the polls this morning, Obama won most of them last night, except for your ordinary right wing sites. Hillary will get what is coming to her sooner or later. There are to many Democrats that hate her for things she has done to them. What goes around, comes around.

Bruce is my favorite. I was wondering when he would endorse Obama. His concert here Sunday was fantastic, as always.

GO BRUCE! GO OBAMA!

Having grown up in the Midwest and knowing the dignity of blue collar Americans making their way, it's thrilling to see Springsteen stand up and say, "It's about the issues..."
It takes courage to stand up, especially in this reactionary environment of spin. It is a truth for anyone who's not sure where the ends will meet, who see an entire minimum wage workday -- before taxes -- go into the gas tank as Exxon's posting record profits for ANY American corporation, when schools fail to prepare kids for basic grown-up functions and two incomes aren't enough.
The haves, and especially the haveplentys, find it easier to look away, to act as if there's not a cavern opening in this nation. But when old people ration their prescriptions, the war in Iraq continues without any clear reason, the name of the game is blame and distract rather than seek solutions, it's more than divide and conquer, it's confuse and take over..
Can Springsteen make a difference? Only if America is ready to face the truth about global warming, agribusiness' erosion of the nutritional aspects of food and where taxes really go... In a world bought and sold, some remain above the auction block: as the nation that believed in hard work yielding results' soundtrack, he's one last for-the-people voice
For Springsteen, those fans are sacred. He'd not sell them -- or his songwriting's legacy -- out for any amount Some things aren't for sale, only faith.

It's also a euphemism for a man who frequents prostitutes. I'm just sayin'...

P.S. I actually like Elton John's music - pre-Disneyfication, that is.

Springsteen has been a political activist since the 70's. His interest in the future of the country and its current state has been inspired by his travels and experiences while performing...

Springsteens capacity and meaningfulness as a performer making an endorsement is easily comparable to charlton Heston or Chuck Norris . merely becasue he is a liberal leaning entertainer does not diminish his political acumen.

Performers and artists have affected history and current events. The uneducated and purely visceral comments here ignore prologue. You may not agree with Springsteen, but what impact have you made in society one way or another......?
