The Pennsylvania Democratic debate took a few nasty turns last night, as moderator George Stephanopoulos sought to inject a new figure from Obama's Chicago life -- William Ayers -- into the national discourse. Before the debate, few voters were aware of Williams Ayers, much less the nature of his connections to the the Illinois senator.

The Associated Press reports on Ayers in the debate:

Clinton said she was concerned about Obama's association with Ayers, a former member of the Weather Underground who Clinton pointed out said in an interview published on Sept. 11, 2001, that he didn't regret bombing government buildings. Obama quickly responded that Clinton's husband pardoned one member of Weather Underground and commuted the sentence of another.

"Look, there is no doubt that the Republicans will attack either of us," Obama said. "What I've been able to display during the course of this primary is that I can take a punch. I've taken some pretty good ones from Senator Clinton."

The New York Times has a rundown on William Ayer's controversial past, as well as his loose ties with Barack Obama:

Mr. Ayers is listed as a member of the nine-member board of the Woods Fund of Chicago, an offshoot of the Woods Charitable Fund, founded in 1941 by a prominent lawyer and telephone company executive. According to the fund's Web site, it has focused in recent years on "issues that affected the area's least advantaged, including welfare reform, affordable housing" and "tax policy as a tool in reducing poverty."

For a time, Mr. Obama was on the board with Mr. Ayers, though he no longer has a formal association with the group. At the debate, he described Mr. Ayers as "a guy who lives in my neighborhood," but "not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis." Mr. Obama said he was being unjustly linked to "somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old."

The Washington Post also points out that Ayers contributed $200 to Obama's state senate reelection campaign in 2001.

Politico, who first covered the relationship into this year, reports that Obama visited the household of the Ayers in Chicago early in his political career:

In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district's influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn....

"I can remember being one of a small group of people who came to Bill Ayers' house to learn that Alice Palmer was stepping down from the senate and running for Congress," said Dr. Quentin Young, a prominent Chicago physician and advocate for single-payer health care, of the informal gathering at the home of Ayers and his wife, Dohrn. "[Palmer] identified [Obama] as her successor."

As Lynn Sweet points out, Obama's seemingly scant relationship with Ayers has been a favorite story of Fox News:

Ayers is a noted education specialist at the University of Illinois at Chicago. But to Fox News -- which has relentlessly been playing up Obama's associations with Ayers -- Ayers is an unrepentant terrorist. Obama made it seem like he barely knew him, though they both served on Chicago's Woods Fund board.

Indeed, some have pointed out that Stephanopoulos' question in the debate sounded eerily similar to a conversation between him and Fox anchor Sean Hannity held the day before the debate. From Hannity's radio show (via Think Progress):

HANNITY: There are two questions that I don't think anybody has asked Barack Obama, and I don't know if this is going to be on your list tomorrow. One is - the only time he's ever been asked about his association with Bill Ayers, the unrepentant terrorist from the Weather Underground who on 9/11 of all days in the New York Times was saying "I don't regret setting bombs. I don't think we did enough." When asked about it by the Politico, David Axelrod said that they have a friendly relationship, and that they had done a number of speeches together and that they sat on a board together. Is that a question you might ask?

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, I'm taking notes right now.

And Talking Points Memo has a clip from Fox News falsely claims that Ayers was Obama's mentor:

Still, the connection is troubling, if only for reasons of perception, to at least some progressives. HuffPost blogger Larry Johnson suggested in February that, "William Ayers, in the age of terrorism, will be Barack Obama's Willie Horton."

What makes Ayers so toxic is his own written record equating U.S. Marines with terrorists. Look at the beating that John Kerry took for tossing his medals over the White House fence. Ayers did not toss medals, he threw bombs. Real ones. Bombs that exploded.

On the libertarian-conservative Volokh Conspiracy website, Northwestern University Law School Professor James Lindgren looked into the Obama-Ayers connection in some detail. Here's his conclusion:

"It seems to me that Obama's serving on the board of the Woods Fund for a few years with [Ayers] is not fundamentally different from my serving for more than a decade on a law faculty with [Ayers' wife, Bernadine Dohrn]."

That we get more honest, objective commentary on Obama from right wing websites than from the supporters of our other Democratic candidate is beneath sad and disgusting.

Obama is CORRUPT, a LIAR, and his slogan of change an ILLUSION.

1) CORRUPT: A houseowner wants to sell both a house and adjoining land. Obama can afford to buy only the house. No problem, the criminal Rezko to the rescue. Rezko pays full price for the land, whereas Obama gets a discount of $300,000 on the house. Nice to have criminal friends like this!!! (ref ABC News)

2) LIAR: Obama claims he did not know about Wright's America-hating (God damn America) and racist views till it was revealed in the mainstream media in March 2008. Obama attended Wright's church for 20 years, was married by Wright, had his children baptized by Wright, donated over $20,000 to Wright's church and named his book "Audacity of Hope" after one of Wright's sermons. You really believe after 20 years and all this he did not know?

3) ILLUSION: Exelon Corporation had not disclosed radioactive leaks at one of its nuclear plants in Illinois. Obama, a senator for Illinois introduces a bill to make disclosures mandatory. Seems like Exelon doesn't like it. Each draft of the new bill by Obama goes more and more towards Exelon till disclosures end up being "voluntary". What gives? How about $250,000+ donations by Exelon!!! Obama is not change, he is WASHINGTON BUSINESS AS USUAL. (ref NYT)

People need to realize that Hillary has been fighting for them all along. All the way back to 1993 when she tried to introduce universal health care.

Obama knew Wright. Obama knew Ayers. Ergo, Obama is guilty of everything Wright and Ayers or did. Keep grasping at straws, you'll need them.

So what Ayers did 40 years ago when Obama was 8 years old shouldn't matter? The fact that Ayers said on 9/11 "I didn't bomb enough, I wish I did more" and Obama continued to associate with him and serve on the board of the Woods Fund with him shouldn't matter? Some Americans feel that sitting US Senators should have good judgement when it comes to choosing friends, pastors and business associates. Obama feels it is perfectly okay for a sitting US Senator to attend a church that D--ms America. Obama says when us regular folks aren't listening, that we won't vote for him because we are clinging to our values and the constitution. Obama could not handle a couple of minutes of tough questioning, it almost seemed like he was about to stomp off the stage like he stomped off when reporters had the audacity to ask him 8 questions about Rev. Wright. Obama is not electable - questions about Wright, Farrakhan, Auchi, Rezko, Amsallaere, Khalidi, Said, Hamas and others are not going to go away - the Republicans can't wait.

It's not that it *shouldn't* matter. That's an individual matter. What's true is it DOESN'T matter, to a lot of people. Don't forget this part:

"In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district's influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn...."

Another Senator introduced him. Not to mention that Ayers is a Professor, as in he's teaching people's kids as we speak. See, society at large has allowed Mr Ayers to re-integrate, as he's paid his debt and done his time.

You are *perfectly* within your rights to continue to regard Mr Ayers as a terrorist. However, don't pretend that your attitude is the norm, and don't expect that I want MY president to share your hyper-reactive views.

If Mr Obama were so quick to storm out of board meetings as you would obviously be, I would vote for someone else.

I hope he doesn't say he hardly knows him again. Just explain the relationship. What you got from it and be honest. If you lie, people will know. Your voters will not be able to explain it to their friends, family and neighbors. Nobody is perfect - Look at bush, the 911 bombers were from Saudi Arabi and he is over there hugging and kissing on them.

From Bill Ayers website http://billayers.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/episodic-notoriety-fact-and-fantasy/

'Regrets. I’m often quoted saying that I have “no regrets.” This is not true. For anyone paying attention—and I try to stay wide-awake to the world around me all/ways—life brings misgivings, doubts, uncertainty, loss, regret. I’m sometimes asked if I regret anything I did to oppose the war in Viet Nam, and I say “no, I don’t regret anything I did to try to stop the slaughter of millions of human beings by my own government.” Sometimes I add, “I don’t think I did enough.” '

I remember the Weathermen. I've always thought they were an over the edge and dangerous group of self styled "revolutionary" whackadoodles.

Though many, many of us opposed the horror of the Viet Nam war during the 60's and 70's, the majority of us did not go over the edge about it.

I really could care less that Obama has served on a Board of Directors with Bill Ayers. None of Obama's political work or legislation evidences the kind of political craziness demonstrated by Ayers, et.al. "back in the day".

The press has all the right in the world to question Obama in the BitterGate and now that Obama worked for terrorist William Ayers. He said he was 8 when Ayers bombed New York. Nice try. But he was 30something when he served on a board with Mr. Ayers in the 1990’s, the Woods Foundation, which was a paid, underlined PAID directorship position. They worked together, attended fundraisers together, Ayers held fundraisers and was a contributor to Obama’s Chicago’s campaign, plus they are neighbors and visited each other quite often. Enough said. This relationship deserves being vetted. As an adult Obama made the decision to work with a terrorist. This is a legitimate issue, the judgment and associations of the possible nominee. Its goes straight to the reason why democrats have lost the last two elections. It goes directly to his associations with Farrahkan, Wright, Ayers, Auchi and Refko. This needs to be fully vetted.

If you want to talk about some “shady” characters, you might want to investigate the pardons Pres Clinton gave in his last days in office. You might want to do a search for Hugh and Tony Rodham, Marc Rich and his wife, Carlos Vignali; ask HC why her senate campaign treasurer, New York attorney William Cunningham III, helped obtain last-minute pardons for two Arkansas tax evaders, Robert Clinton Fain and James Lowell Manning. Even more intriguing, the pair were referred to Cunningham by Clinton's New York campaign guru and fixer Harold Ickes.(Sound familiar) With pals like these, maybe you don't need to talk directly to the first lady and senator. This is just the tip of the iceberg regarding “unfavorable” people the Clinton’s have and do associate with. Add the fraud charges that are pending against them and it would seem they have baggage no one is talking about but maybe they should. Maybe HC's associations need to be vetted.

This Ayers, Rev. Wright and BitterGate stuff may not matter much during the Democrat Primary, mostly because there are so many in the Democrat party who sypathize with these questionable people.

Just wait till the general election. The 527's are going to have alot of material to work with.

"You are who you roll with".

Wow. Shall we check the receipts to see who British-American tobacco, Monsanto, Lockheed-Martin and others in the military-industrial complex and their networks of affiliate and shell companies donated to? Or just a quick scroll through Dick Cheney's investment portfolio and dinner guest book might be quicker? Your current government are a bunch of war criminals that associate with and profit from the profiteers of war. It might serve Americans and the media well to remember that the current administration is not only stained by association, but IS the offending associate when it comes to war crimes - the act of declaring a war which has claimed thousands of Americans and 100s of thousands of Iraqis on false pretences being just one of many such crimes. False claims and false calls to 'patriotism' have blinded Americans to this fact, just as they obscured the lies on which the Iraq war was based. Time to wake up and smell the rank hypocrisy and subterfuge when candidates are questioned about so-called 'patriotism'.

It was almost funny how Clinton and George tag-teamed Barack on Ayers. You could tell it was a well set up ambush, no doubt hoping to blindside him and perhaps excite a feeding frenzy by the media and pundits to unearth an Obama scandal right before the Pen election. I loved the way Barack shut up both George and Hillary by shooting right back at them with his comments about being 8 years old when this guy did his nasty, and reminding them of Bill Clinton's pardon of Ayer associates. It would appear that once again, team Clinton underestimated their opponent, obviously expecting to deliver irreparable damage with the first shot. They sure weren't prepared for the come-back, knock-out punch Obama delivered in return. The sweetest moment of the evening came, however, in an otherwise debacle of TV journalism, when George ... George, of all people ... got Hillary to confess that she believed Barack can win the Presidency ... and so emphatically did she champion him! "Yes. Yes. Yes." she exclaimed. Way to go George! Way to go!

Yeah, brilliant. The only problem is that Sen. Obama wasn't hanging out with the mad bomber(er, English professor in Obama speak) when he was eight. He was running for political office and figured these two leftist bombers(professors) could be useful. Obama's chickens comin' home to roost.

Sorry boy, but you are obviously mixed up. The legitimate outrage is trying to compare a radical liberal who is also an admitted remorseless terrorist to a sitting US Senator. Obama should have compared his ex-bomber neighbor to his racist, hate-filled preacher. More commonality I believe.

People are now claiming that 1960s radicals were terrorists. Talk about rewriting history. I bet King George called the colonists terroris...Whoa, sorry about that, my flag lapel pin fell off and I started talking crazy. What I meant to say was: America can do no wrong. The Almighty Jesus Christ speaks through the actions of our nation. If you don't like America you don't like Jesus. And if you don't like Jesus you're a terrorist. And if you're a terrorist we will kill you - unless you are a good terrorist. And by good terrorist I mean the ones who were made in the image of our lord: you know, white (we'll accept Christian converts though - because when you're born again Jesus makes you white). Take the IRA. If the War on Terror was waged against all terrorists we'd have to include them and invade Northern Ireland. Or we'd have to invade the southeast United States where some religious terrorists have contaminated drinking water. Or we'd have to invade Indonesia where Christian cults bomb schools. Does anyone remember that the second largest act of terrorism committed on American soil was perpetrated by an American white mal...Whoa, sorry, this damn flag lapel pin fell off again. I should probably get a new one. Ah, MADE IN CHINA. Maybe that's the problem.
