Washington Post :

The public's ratings of the national economy continue to sour, with assessments deteriorating faster than at any point in Washington Post-ABC News polling. Views on the Iraq war have also turned more negative, with six in 10 now rejecting the notion that the United States needs to win there to effectively battle terrorism.

The economy and the Iraq war are the top two issues on voters' minds, according to the new Post-ABC poll, and worsening opinions of both may dampen GOP hopes for the November elections.

Want to fix the economy?

Stop taxing our businesses at rates up to 39% while most of Europe’s rates are at 30%. (FYI, China taxes foreign businesses at 21%.)

Stop turning our food in to fuel. Bio-fuels have driven the cost of every food item we purchase upward with zero benefits to the environment, efficiency, or our pockets.

Invest in our own oil production by allowing the construction of new refineries and reduce the blends of gas to just two (summer/winter) instead of the 38 some producers are contending with.

Stop bailing out failing businesses (Bear Sterns) and criminalize gross negligence (Enron) that results in extraordinary losses for shareholders and the public.

Force Congress to cut the pork that doesn’t either secure jobs in blighted areas or provide economic stimulus to areas in direct need of assistance. They are not there to ‘bring home the bacon’ to their individual states but rather to represent the people and ensure that the laws of the United States are fairly and justly employed for all. (Seems they’ve forgotten why they are there!)

The rest is up to the public to stop overextending their credit lines and return to living within their means. Bankruptcies hurt more than just purchasers; it causes unrecoverable losses to businesses which in-turn hurts jobs.

We can’t fix everything at once but this would make for a good start!

Now, if both Hillary and Obama want to propose 250 billion more (give or take a few billion) in annual government spending for programs that will only grow over time AND the wars on TERRORISM still need to be fought, albeit, with more emphasis on Afghanistan and Pakistan, where will this money come from? And both propose imposing penalties on Corporations through higher taxes (which the consumer will pay for). And both propose allowing the Bush tax cuts for those making over 100k (other figures include 70k and 200k) expire. And the GAO has already put out an analysis of both plans reporting all new proposed taxes will fall far short of all new proposed spending. That being said, how will electing either two HELP the economy, specifically?

-- Tax relief for the middle class while requiring corporations and wealthy individuals to pay their fair share.
-- More sensible trade deals that protect both workers and the environment.
-- Better focus on technology, innovation and job creation
-- Universal health care to ease the burden of medical costs
-- Tax credits for higher education, and better investment in education that will produce very high returns for that investment.
-- Homeowner protections, crackdowns on mortgage fraud.
-- Sensible regulation of economic practices to deter fraud and other shoddy financial schemes.
-- Regulate predatory credit card lenders.
-- Reform the bankruptcy laws.
-- Get out of Iraq.

That's just for starters. There's lots more. Note that we're stuck with having to pay off these horrible deficits regardless of who's president, but as noted above, there are lots of sensible things we can do that will help tremendously. Trickle-down economics was a lie told to the American people, Ammobob. Time to grow up now.

How much more than 86.1% of the taxes should the Top 20% pay? And then how do you keep those higher taxes from being added to the price of goods and services?

And here's a look into the OBAMA ECONOMIC TAX and SPEND PLAN:

The Wall Street Journal and Investors Business Daily certainly paid attention to the so-called “issues” portion of last Wednesday’s debate. The WSJ accuses Obama of “tax evasion”:

"Time and again, the rookie Senator has said he would not raise taxes on middle-class earners, whom he describes as people with annual income lower than between $200,000 and $250,000. On Wednesday night, he repeated the vow. “I not only have pledged not to raise their taxes,” said the Senator, “I’ve been the first candidate in this race to specifically say I would cut their taxes.”
But Mr. Obama has also said he’s open to raising – indeed, nearly doubling to 28% – the current top capital gains tax rate of 15%, which would in fact be a tax hike on some 100 million Americans who own stock, including millions of people who fit Mr. Obama’s definition of middle class. ….
Either the young Illinois Senator is ignorant of this revenue data, or he doesn’t really care because he’s a true income redistributionist who prefers high tax rates as a matter of ideological dogma regardless of the revenue consequences. Neither one is a recommendation for President

This isn't my area of expertise, so others will do a much better job against this drivel, but I'll give it a shot. First, all of you 100 million stock owners, speak up! Mostly, we're talking 401K plans here, so that's not exactly the capital gains situation we're talking about, and I think you know that. I'm not sure if your link gets into the Social Security Tax, but I'm guessing it does. Although he hasn't yet said definitely, I'm 99% sure there will be a "doughnut hole" in the taxing for Social Security for mid-range earners, so as not to place a new burden on an upper-middle class that is also struggling. For those earning more than $200,000, if you want to shed a tear about getting them to pay more of a fair share, you go ahead.

Corporations and wealthy individuals have enjoyed so many tax advantages that it's abominable, especially when you see what they do with the extra dough. It's time to start working together, Ammobob. No more games.

This is why they're so desperate to keep Obama and Hillary fighting it out until late August, and maybe beyond. When we finally get to confront the Republicans, it's going to be a blowout wherever real debate is permitted. The GOP defense is beyond bankrupt, but we still need time to get the truth out, and we need to start now. Obama has to fight with kid gloves while Hillary is making the GOP talking points, and they're taking notes on how to chip away. This is why beating a dead horse is so damaging. It is SO time to start taking on these idiots!

Bill won in 1992 with the help of H Ross and only netted about 37%-39% of the vote. The american voter hammered him 1994 by giving both houses of congress to the GOP. He beat a very, very weak candidate, Bob Dole, in 1996, and even then didn't get a majority of the vote. From 1995 to the end of his term, Clinton admin policy drifted right and he was unable to fight off impeachment. The Democratic Party suffered significant losses in state legislatures and governorships all across the country in the 1990s - the map went red under Bill's watch. Finally, his VP, his party - his "legacy" - suffered another defeat in 2000.

Clinton won the "silly" battles against the GOP - whitewater, monicagate, etc. But his party lost more ground and power with him at the helm.

HRC? What's her major accomplishment over the GOP? Not getting indicted by the Whitewater grand jury? Impressive. I hear she even made some tough, snarky, partisan remarks about Ken Starr once. Both of her victories in NY were hollow. She faced lesser-known opponents with less money in a blue state.

When she got the Senate, she sided with Bush on the biggest issue of this decade.
