Washington Post:

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) today accused the Bush administration of being overly obstinate on a range of controversial issues, expressing particular frustration at Attorney General Michael Mukasey's unwillingness to compromise.

"Mukasey is non-negotiable," Specter said at a meeting with the Washington Post editorial board. "Mukasey is still wearing his robe."

Here is an interesting story on Specter.

A friend of mine met with Specter in high school in order to get his recommendation to attend West Point. After interviewing my friend, Specter asked him do you have any questions of me. My friend said simply, "Single Bullet Theory what were you thinking?" The interview was around the time of the JFK movie by Stone.

Specter looked my friend deadpan in the eye, smiled, and leaned back in his chair. Specter said something along the line that he has served an entire life in public service doing this doing that championing this and championing that and all he is known for is the single bullet theory.

Specter continued to smile and said this was the first time in a long time that someone asked him such a question one on one and this most certainly was the only time that someone asked him about this topic in this type of forum. Specter said he respected the willingness of my friend to bring up the question directly to him. With that, Specter signed off on my friends recommendation and wished him well in the service.

Arlen Specter is truly a class act. I am very glad he is in the Senate fighting the good fight.

But....but... he didn't answer the question right?
He danced around the answer, gave the kid a big 'Pshaw' and signed his form.
You think thats a class act? That was pure politics.

Specter ALWAYS dances around things. Or, he says he's gonna get tough on Dubya and his administration, and then he backs down.

Specter is, was and always will be an enabler. Hey, when you help cover up the worst crime in American history (the assassination of JFK), it's all downhill from there!

When Mukasey was brought forth as the next Attorney General, the nation felt reassured. After having watched constant reports of Gonzalez being biased to the administration and that Gonzalez had instilled an environment in the DOJ that motivated politically targeted prosecutions, a sitting judge as Attorney General seemed like a needed change. Boy were we wrong.

Instead of Mukasey cleaning house or at least steering a new choice, Mukasey appears to be no better than Gonzalez on all issues. The outcome of what is happening here is that the job for cleaning up the DOJ will now fall to a Democrat administration after this fall. Bush and Co. were given a great chance to fix things, prevent pending investigations, and perhaps leave on a high note from office (at least not a low note). They squandered this opportunity like so many others.

The lesson of Mukasey's appointment is simple. Any appointment of a federal judge to a executive position should be suspect since said judge has not disclosed his true beliefs. As with Chertoff, Mukasey is clearly an neocon Republican. At least he is no longer on the bench.

You were "reassured". You gotta be kidding me. When mukasey wouldn't answer questions I knew right then he was as bad as gonzales.

Sen. Specter's testimony reminds me of the days when I used to feel comfortable voting for Republicans.
Sen. Specter is putting his integrity, and the welfare of the people, over his loyalty to the elites of the Republican party. This is what we should be able to expect of all politicians. It should be the rule, not the exception.
Thank you for trying to do the right thing, Sen. Specter. Best wishes for a speedy recovery of your illness.

Specter is a great politician or should I say statesman. Being from PA, I have not always agreed with his viewpoints; however I have always known they were his. He is a truly independent mind and not a lacky to anyone's administration.

I hope he recovers soon. The onset of the cancer could not have come at a worse time. With the majority of moderate Republicans registering as Democrats in PA for this year's primary, Specter will have a difficult run in 2010 if he has a challenger. PA is a closed primary on both sides, so Specter will have to run in a state party that leans more towards Santorum than Ridge now.

He says a lot of the right things, but 90% of the time ends up caving in to the demands of his party. That said, he sometimes deserves more credit than a lot of democrats - the ones who vote the right way on issues, but never speak out about them.

Now that your cancer is back, Arlen Specter, it is the time for you to make amends for all those times you gave into your party rather than your own conscience and the country's needs. I remember many of those times you said one thing and voted the other way. This may be the time for you to become the profile in courage in your job in the same manner you did it to fight the other two battles of cancer. Stress plays a nasty role in the development of cancer and I do know for several years, you have been under the stress of not being the man you wanted to be when you put your finger on the voting button. It could be now or never time. Use ti wisely.

Mukasey seems to have swallowed the Bush agenda hook, line, and sinker. That tells me what I already knew about confirmation hearings. They do not get at the truth when the confirmee is schooled at lying. This guy should have never ascended to AG based on his performance thus far; he cannot determine if what is obviously torture is torture? He has no regard for the law just whatever his self-interests are, which seem to be aligned with the Bush agenda.

Self reliant is where you want to be normally, but in a broken system it is paramount, for you are on your own when you are with Bush. You are on your own for justice, you are on your own if your city floods, and you are on your own if you dissent to war unprovoked.

George Bush --not good for America!

Is it the dark robe with the hood, or the red imperial guard one?
