WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Barack Obama cast his Democratic presidential rival Saturday as a game-player who uses "slash and burn" tactics and will say whatever people want to hear, a sharp jab at her character in the final chapter of the pivotal Pennsylvania primary campaign.

Hillary Rodham Clinton implored voters to look beyond "whoop dee do" speechmaking and take a hard look at who's got the know-how to deal with the nation's burdens.

"I want everyone thinking," she declared, as if to suggest those backing Obama are not. Her implication was clear: She's substance, he's flash.

Altogether, the campaign for Tuesday's contest was dissolving into the sort of acrimony that makes party leaders long for the finish line, before the nominee is damaged in the fall. Obama's criticisms were direct, while Clinton's were oblique but unmistakable. At various times in the protracted contest, it's been the other way around.

He pressed the case against her at stop after stop, blunt words set against the bucolic backdrop of his train ride through the Pennsylvania countryside. For her part, Clinton struck back at a new Obama ad that criticizes her health care plan, telling a rally in York: "Instead of attacking the problem, he chooses to attack my solution."

Otherwise she stuck to her stump speech, something of a role reversal in a contest that has seen the New York senator going after her opponent while he has stayed measured.

The primary Tuesday follows a monthlong hiatus in voting.

Party officials known as superdelegates continued drifting toward Obama in that interim, increasing his edge in the race despite his series of gaffes, and that trend is bound to accelerate if he performs strongly Tuesday. Clinton is hoping a decisive win will put a stop to that. Polls have suggested she has a consistent if shrinking lead.

The New York senator spoke under a baking sun outside West Chester's 175-year-old fire house, striking a somber note about problems at home and abroad as she described the stakes for voters Tuesday. She asked them to think about the looming challenge of China, the restive Middle East, the trade imbalance and the debt burden.

"I don't want to just show up and give one of those whoop-dee-do speeches and get everybody whipped up," she said. "I want everyone thinking."

As she looked to exploit questions about his gravitas, Obama played on poll findings indicating unease with her veracity, and did so head on, with words that could easily slip into a Republican campaign ad should Clinton become the Democratic contender against GOP candidate John McCain.

In Wynnewood, several thousand supporters lined the tracks for the first stop on his daylong whistle-stop tour aboard a royal blue train car that pulled out of Philadelphia in late morning.

"I may not be perfect but I will always tell you what I think, and I will always tell you where I stand," he told the crowd. Then he spoke of his rival.

"She's taken different positions at different times on issues as fundamental as trade, or even the war, to suit the politics of the moment. And when she gets caught at it, the notion is, well, you know what, that's just politics. That's how it works in Washington. You can say one thing here and say another thing there."

He amplified the point at a later stop, in Paoli.

"Senator Clinton's essential argument in this campaign is you can't change how the game is played in Washington. Her basic argument is that the slash-and-burn, say-anything, do-anything special interest-driven politics is how it works.... Senator Clinton has internalized a lot of the strategies, the tactics, that have made Washington such a miserable place."

And again, farther down the tracks, in Downington: "She's got the kitchen sink flying and the china flying, the buffet is coming at me ... constant distractions, these petty, trivial, slash and burn, back and forth, tit for tat, politics."

Obama's comment sharply diverged from his recent above-the-fray attitude. Not since Clinton was the front-runner last year has her character been so sharply criticized. Then-candidate John Edwards portrayed her as a defender of a corrupt Washington system.

Casual without a tie or jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up, the Illinois senator shook hands with conductors and rail-workers on the platform in Philadelphia and set off, tooting the train whistle. Flags and bunting draped the back. The train had four stops en route to his evening rally in Harrisburg.

Clinton organized five events across the state. Nick Clemons, her Pennsylvania director, said the campaign would deploy 5,000 volunteers to place phone calls and knock on doors. "This is not going to be a blowout race," he said. "We're looking for a win, and we think it's going to be a close race."

Obama's new TV ad on health care was to be shown statewide until the primary.

"What's she not telling you about her health care plan?" the ad asks. "It forces everyone to buy insurance even if you can't afford it, and you pay a penalty if you don't."

In accusing Clinton of wanting to penalize people who don't buy insurance, the ad does not explain how Obama would enforce his proposed mandate that children be covered, without penalties of his own.

Clinton and Obama have tangled over whether to require everyone to purchase insurance _ a rare bit of daylight between them on the issues. Clinton's health care plan includes a mandate to buy insurance and offers tax subsidies for people to be able to purchase it. Obama's plan does not include a mandate except for children, but provides assistance that he says would make coverage affordable.

Obama leads Clinton in overall delegates, 1,645-1,507, with 2,025 needed to win the nomination. Obama also has a thin lead in the popular vote that Clinton hopes to overcome before the final ballots are cast in June.

Hillary is sad

How can a big name politician and his wife who they said WOULD BE THE NOMINEE get close as this and is not the nominee by now

How can a no name Illinois Sen. come and just wipe the floor with her

I laugh at that all the time. I know she is sad and hurting because she has taken some desperarte measures and her final argument is now MOOT. She said he could beat McCain. He also said she could beat him too, but he can do that because he is not on life support and has more efficient arguments to use that he can win. Ex. Popular vote, delegates, and probably SUPERS in a minute

I just want an answer to one simple question. Which candidate believes in the constitution and wants to see it fixed back the way it should be? Who is going to eliminate torture, restore habeas corpus, stop illegal domestic spying, respect the rule of law and restore justice?

Why weren't the tough questions asked about that?

patriotscholar...I attended a town hall in Lancaster for Obama. A question regarding that was directly asked. He stated that immediately entering his term, he would assemble a legal team to review all of the executive branch changes that were made by Bush. Obama is a constitutional scholar and has stated he will restore habeas corpus, eliminate torture, stop the domestic spying and many other dealings/changes that were made by this administration. I hope this helps.

Most of Hillary's supporters will vote for Obama. So,Obama will have his supporters as well as most of her supporters...Let's not forget that 2 supreme court judges will be picked by the next president. Obama will beat McCain.
all the polls show now is the support of Obama Vs Mccain ( with only those voting for him now)but you add on Hillary's supporters to that( which Obama will have should he be the nominee)..wipe OUT !

But what if Hillary's supporters don't support Obama? What if after hearing Obama's thoughts on abortion rights, sex education, and other women's issues, we don't trust him to make better choices on Supreme Court justices than McCain? What we we don't think that Obama is our better choice for lots of real, concrete reasons? How can Obama's supporters have spent the last few months calling Hillary's supporters uneducated old biddies and now expect us to fall into line behind their candidate? You are counting on support that just isn't there, and there appears to be no way of getting back. But dream on.

I am curious about something and going to throw it out there for your thoughts. I know that we are really trying to stay above the racism issue. At least most of us. I have read posts that are very racist and post that are not. But think about this fact. It would be amazing for us to have a half/black president. Probably more amazing than the first woman president. I understand how many would say in public that they were for Obama and go into the polling booth and vote Hillary. Shame does that to people. Now having said that, how many blacks for whatever reason on the surface are Hillary supporters, will go into that polling booth and vote Obama. I just can't see any black NOT voting for what could be a part of the history of electing the first black president.

Hang in there. Just a few more weeks of Hurricane Hillary's Hot Winds, and this nightmare will be over. The Super D's will be underwhelmed by her continued distractions and finally put her out of our misery.

FYI Sen. Clinton. The following are characteristics unbecoming a patriot (and a lady):

defender of a corrupt Washington system which includes
slash-and-burn
say-anything, do-anything
special interest-driven politics
kitchen sink flying and the china flying, the buffet is coming at me
constant distractions that are petty, trivial,
back and forth, tit for tat, politics

This will be your final warning.

If I hear Hillary Clinton say one more time, "I've got a plan for that," I'll scream.

I myself have "a plan" to solve the nation's problems, but nobody will know what it is. But I can tell you, it doesn't include Clinton's "plans". Hell, Hitler had "plans" to solve Germany's problems, though they didn't benefit Germany.

Likewise she NEVER describes what the "plan" is, just says she has one -- it's the ultimate condescension and cover-up.

anney: You are right on point!

I thought it was just me, she's always talking about Senator Obama's speeches, but I find that he gives more detail about his plans than she does. Also, she recently said that Senator Obama had not released his tax returns from 2007, she's kidding, right? How do people listen to this witch, she is as corrupt as they come. What's up with her reciting her website address every time she speaks? Anybody that doesn't know who they're voting for by now, doesn't deserve to vote.

See, that's the difference. Hillary's plans are HERS and corporate America's, like her 90s healthcare plan was, no adjustments, no improvements, no taking into account those who knew more than she did.

If you include Americans in your plans, that means you'll listen to and incorporate what THEY need, not what you and corporate America condescend to bestow. It's a willingness to be flexible and take others into account before finalizing anything. There are thousands of citizen sources to tap. It's democratic, in other words.

I don't understand how the less than 40,000.00/yr democratic demographic can even support Hillary, Her husband signed the China Most favored nation for trade. This is what caused the export of Jobs to China. I don't understand these folks yet they want to give the Clintons another 4 years in office. Bush Jr didn't screw you the Clintons did, and yet they are so blind to this, that they will vote for another Clinton. Oh well if they want to sabotage this nation, and there self interests let them. However you have been warned the Clintons will not create jobs for you they will create jobs for other countries.

Here is one Penn voter who is inspired by Barrack Obama's uplifting message and promise of a new method of governance that doesn't favor corporate privilege

My wife is voting for Hillary because she feels that Hillary Clinton has the better specific programs that will benefit the most Americans.

We both feel that the mass media has vilified both candidates, based on whichever leads in the polls and will both work to support the eventual democratic nominee

we all need to realize that both candidates are imminently qualified and that only a democratic president can lift our nation to greatness that it held befor the neocons ruined our nation

One thing I would like to ask your wife before she cast her important vote on Tuesday is: "what PLAN has Hillary given in PA that would "pay" for all of those specific programs that will benefit the most Americans"? I am having a real problem trying to follow the 'money trail' to get everything done she puts out as a "promise" even in 2 terms as our President. Actually, for my 3 grandkids sake, she has begun to scared the beegeesus out of me that they will be in such enormous debt they will never know a 'good time' in this country!. btw - I believe the country is ready for a woman, but it must be the 'right' woman and Hillary's management style of 'my way or the highway' is all wrong.

As for Obama, his message is upliftling, but as this Social Security white grandma (you know, the kind that the media says is supporting Hillary) what I find so 'inspiring' is that I believe in my heart that Obama is a person that will surround and LISTEN to this country's best minds and experience to turn the country in the correct direction. It won't be done in a first term, but by his second term we will have gain world respect, cooperation, togetherness and self esteem to accomplish the "impossible" left in the wake of a Bush/Cheney Administration.
