Norman Mailer

An unpublished memoir about sex with Norman Mailer, as well as a novel edited by the late author, was recently sold to Harvard (Mailer's alma mater) by his longtime mistress Carole Mallory, according to the New York Post's Page Six. Page Six writes:

"There's a 20-page sex scene from an unpublished memoir I wrote called 'Making Love With Norman,' " Mallory told Page Six. "It's very steamy. Norman was a real man and he knew what he was doing."

There's also an unpublished novel Mallory wrote and Mailer edited titled "When I Fall in Love," about "an Arab with an eye patch who really has 20/20 vision, but wears it to get sympathy," she told us. "There's a long scene in that which is also based on our sex life. Norman dared me to write a 50-page sex scene, and he lost the bet."

Ironically, Mailer, who died in November, was posthumously awarded the "Bad Sex in Fiction" award for "a graphic passage in his novel The Castle in the Forest...The winning passage, which leaves little to the imagination, begins: 'So Klara turned head to foot and put her most unmentionable part down on his hard-breathing nose and mouth and took his old battering ram into her lips.'"

Carole Mallory lived with a Picasso son for some years in Paris,
then she got the clap a lot in N.Y., was in alcohol rehab; tried selling notorious things to the Post; Norman according to the other Norman, Podhoretz of MAKING IT FAME, was a true rabbit. If he was with her for that length of time she must have been good in bed. Norman had is ups and downs as a writer , usually he managed to be halfway interesting; the last published book, the one on Hitler, is so monstrously bad it testifies only to the ever dying need to make a bit of noise by linking his name to someone more famous. He took up for too much of the limelight that deserved to be focussed on other equally or more deserving writers; but that';s how it goes, editors have to sell papers; Proctor and Gamble needs to sell Charmin. Norman was a symptom that did not die with him.

Just looking at his photo, would make a good erection go south, I'm sure seeing her, you'd really be in a warm climate!

I read Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead", years ago, and was totally unimpressed, and
felt its' description of being one of the best novels from WWII was terribly undeserved. A little story
about Mailer says it all, he appeared on a David Frost interview, and had been going on about
how he was the original angry young man. When Frost challenged him, about how he saw things
as an angry old man, he kicked over his chair and stormed off the stage. Hubris anyone?

Read it?

Who's got the time?

Where's the youtube action?

Not out of prurience.... We just need to see the documentary evidence so that we might then include it in our dissertations and stuff.

met mailer at a party a few years ago, he was sitting in the center of the room, grasping the arms of his chair, like a lion it struck me at the time, we talked about old essays he wrote in esquire in the 1950s, arguably among the best things he ever wrote, i hate seeing him betrayed now, love him or hate him, youd have to agree that his impact is lasting

A mediocre novelist who turned mediocre social commentator and "reporter" in the 1960s and, finally, this.

Is anyone surprised? Bill Buckley regularly made mincemeat of him. But I'll give him credit for having the courage to defend his views passionately in public. A lot of liberal celebrities these days take potshots and then run away.

Mailer was indeed a mediocrity, but the blowhard Buckley never made mincemeat of anyone. His skewerings by Gore Vidal were delicious.

I have a feeling that sex with Mailer was probably the most boring episode in the life of any woman who had to undergo that degrading procedure. "Norman was a real man. He knew what he was doing," the mistress says. That's just the problem. He knew what he was doing when it was good for himself. Mailer claims he never had sex with a man. He had a 50% view of the sexual landscape. Plus, in the years before he became senile, he was a messy drunk. Lower inhibitions, more passivity, less technique, stinky hygiene, and exclusively verbal foreplay, because Mailer always talked a better, or more loquacious, game than he played (note his TWO books about Marilyn Monroe, who he never met). Please, Harvard, please, lock them in a vault and never again let them see the light of day.

Why, shag11, would you make that the first comment? You embarrass yourself to say no one is interested in Norman Mailer's life, private or otherwise. I would think many people who cared about Norman Mailer are interested and probably many other curious persons as well.

Yuck. The only thing I want to read less than something written by Mailer is a document of his banging by one of his fuck mates.

If you click on a link, read an article, and then spend your time writing a comment regarding that article, then, quite apparently it is you who cares.

Don't you think?
