Having thought, now I will "speak". The origins of ritual, deliberate scarification are vague, to say the least. Did it designate one as a member of a particular tribe? Was it a badge of honor, a mark of shame, or either,both, or something else? Personally, I have never desired to poke holes in my body for any reason that wasn't medical in nature. Why does everyone have to have some deep, stupendous reason to get a tat? Isn't "I like them" enough?
Sorry, guess I wasn't explicit enough in my comment. I like GOOD art of any sort, including tats. I thought the direction of the question was the ''why" rather than a pro or con.

Street Cred? I have no tats meself. I do think a lower back tat on some women is very sexy - gives you something to focus on when you are .... ummm.... you know... uh... heh heh. That said I gotta go with Penn Gillette on this one: get the Tattoo of Blood. You get the tattoo but there is no ink in the gun, so you get to enjoy the pain and ritual of the blood sacrifice without the permanence of the tattoo. Ghoulishly Delicious. (fill in Vincent Price laugh here).
Those tats are going to look really hot in another 30 years, on saggy wrinkled skin.

The tattoos look horrible on most of them. I don't understand the appeal of tattoos. I always wonder how stupid they'll look on people as they get older and their skin gets saggy and the ink fades... it'll really look gross then.
It's jailhouse mentality: you can't alter your surroundings so you alter yourself.
I don't see one that looks good now, and in 20 years it will look even worse. I guarantee you that the higher the number of tattoos, the more insecure and disturbed the person is.
