NEW ALBANY, Ind. — How can they not be tired?

Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton are undeniably exhausted. They've been campaigning hard for more than a year, and their wall-to-wall schedules won't let up anytime soon. Neither wants to cede ground in their epic struggle for the Democratic nomination.

Fatigue, however, breeds unforced errors _ and both candidates have made some in the past few weeks.

He turned in a weak debate performance in Pennsylvania, took heat for saying residents of small-town America were bitter and inadvertently praised Republican John McCain. She, too, had a sub-par debate and mistakenly claimed to have landed under sniper fire in Bosnia as first lady.

"Sometimes. Yes, of course," Obama, 46, acknowledged Tuesday when asked whether he was exhausted.

The Illinois senator was in the midst of a near 20-hour campaign day. He left his hotel at 6 a.m. for satellite TV interviews in Philadelphia and didn't stop moving until his plane touched down Wednesday in Chicago at 1:30 a.m.

Fourteen years his senior, Clinton laughed off a question about how she maintained a grueling schedule.

"It's been a 15-month campaign and, if everything had been as much fun as Pennsylvania, it wouldn't feel like 15 years," the 60-year-old said _ uncharacteristically showing weariness.

Story continues below

As the Democrats continue their long days of tussling, Republican nominee-in-waiting McCain has pared back his schedule considerably from the before-sunup to after-sundown days of the GOP primary fight. Energetic at 71, he would be the oldest person ever elected president.

Since the Arizona senator wrapped up the nomination last month, he has kept to just one or two public events a day. To be sure, he's at work behind the scenes raising money and preparing for the general election. But most weekends he opts for down time in Phoenix or at his cabin in Sedona, Ariz., resting up for the fall fight.

It's a luxury Obama and Clinton don't have.

The next Democratic primaries _ Indiana and North Carolina _ are May 6, just two weeks away, and the stakes are extraordinary.

So, the excruciatingly long days will continue.

The drawn-out race clearly weighs on Obama; he talks about it at every stop.

"I've been running for president for about 15 months now, which means that there are babies who are now walking and talking, who were born since I announced for president," he said again Wednesday, campaigning in this Ohio River city. "This has been a long primary season."

Obama also frequently mentions how rarely he gets to see his family. He rearranged his schedule so he could return to Chicago late Tuesday to see his daughters off to school Wednesday. He plans no public events Thursday, just down time at home in Chicago.

He took his family to the Virgin Islands last month for a quick rest, but went full-bore in the run up to the Pennsylvania primary. He typically started the day at dawn with an early morning stop at a diner and ended with a nighttime rally. Several other events _ and numerous interviews with local and national media outlets _ were packed in between.

To combat exhaustion, Obama catnaps on his plane. Lithe and athletic, he prioritizes daily exercise to keep up his energy. But there are physical signs of the stress; his hair has grown grayer since he began campaigning.

For her part, Clinton is a veteran of her husband's back-to-back White House races and is keenly aware of the toll it takes on body and spirit. She, too, takes short naps on her plane and eats a steady diet of hot peppers, which she believes has helped her stave off illness. But she says she's getting very little exercise.

The former first lady goes to great pains to manage and hide her fatigue, mindful of Obama's youth and exuberance. Hair and makeup specialists travel with her to help her look fresh from morning until night. When she talks about the long campaign, she tries to be lighthearted and humorous.

However, when pressed about the Bosnia gaffe during last week's debate by a voter named Tom Rooney, Clinton blamed fatigue.

"I will either try to get more sleep, Tom or, you know, have somebody that, you know, is there, as a reminder to me," the New York senator said.

Her schedule is punishing. Clinton usually is up at dawn to prepare for local morning TV and radio interviews, zips to events in far flung cities throughout the day and into the evening, and often doesn't go to bed until after midnight.

In Memphis, Tenn., this month to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Clinton didn't get to her hotel until 5 a.m. after a redeye flight from California.

She was onstage before television cameras just 6 hours later.

Your so full of it! I had to kill a man in self defense and ended up shooting him with his own gun. I didn't "misspeak" later about it. There's something about gunfire you will never forget. To blame sniper fire on being tired is an outright lie. And YOU know it.

It too bad for the Democrats both Obama and Clinton were too concerned about becoming president and not what was best for the country and party to have stepped aside long ago. Big egos.

This thing needs to end now! Look Hillbots. Your girl won't win. She can't no way now. So give it up. Don't send her any money. The Clintons are like junkies. You are feeding their power addiction. Your money is going down the drain.

You must all come together behind your candidate Barack Obama. Whether you like him or not you have to face reality. He's our guy now. So stop with the Clintons already. Ignore them and they'll go away. Let Barack get down to the important biz of slaying McCain.

'He turned in a weak debate performance in Pennsylvania'.

You just don't get it do you? What you saw was STRENGTH. Pure. And. Simple. He would not stoop to the level of the other three muck-ruckers. THAT takes STRENGTH, conviction and moral fiber. That's the same reason that people who don't think for themselves think he's unpatriotic because he won't give UNQUESTIONED support just because its cloaked in patriotic terms. Clinton fell for this manipulation BIG TIME in her vote for going to war in Iraq WITHOUT even reading the intelligence report first. She was UNQUESTIONINGLY patriotic ... She was asleep at the wheel. AGAIN, in THINKING FOR HIMSELF, and seeing the lies and manipulation and LACK OF INTELLIGENCE to support the neocon's pre-emptive, illegal, immoral, deadly and costly Iraq war, Obama's STRENGTH to defy the pressure of the herd mentality engendered by the call to patriotism, is highlighted, and his JUDGMENT proven sound and true.

You know who's getting plenty of sleep?

George Bush. Yep, he's in bed by nine every night, and if the phone rings at 3 a.m. he lets it go to voicemail.

More importantly; Hillary is almost a decade and a half older than Barry and she's going strong.

I'd feel almost sorry for either one of them if I didn't know that there were American men and women in Iraq, doing 15 month tours (some on a third tour) who are also tired, missing their families, and maybe even a little bit afraid for their lives and health. Stop funding the war, bring the troops home now, and then we'll express some sympathy for your plight.

She's also packing on the weight. I know that's extremely petty to point out, but there is something satisfying about it. Apparently there's at least some cost to fighting dirty and telling lies -- i.e., it takes an inordinate amount of self-consolation in the form of comfort food.

Before they devour themselves once more, perhaps the Democrats will take a cue from Dr. Seuss’s “Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!” (The writer once mischievously redid it for his friend Art Buchwald as “Richard M. Nixon Will You Please Go Now!”) They could sing:

“The time has come. The time has come. The time is now. Just go. ... I don’t care how. You can go by foot. You can go by cow. Hillary R. Clinton, will you please go now! You can go on skates. You can go on skis. ... You can go in an old blue shoe.

Just go, go, GO!”

My! How well-read you are! The depth and breadth and variety of your resources is astounding! NOT!! Some of that stuff borders on libelous slander, and someone really should be taken to task for it.

You really don't have to stir up fear and hatred against Obama. Don't worry, it's not his intention to "enslave the white race," or to mete out retribution to those who have harbored and perpetuated ill will. He's bigger than that.

You don't know it but, dirty tricks and politics twisted against him notwithstanding, Barack Obama is truly an extraordinary individual, and one of the most genuine people you'd ever want to meet --white, black or otherwise. He's one of those rare, gifted individuals who only come along once every couple of generations. Mind you, he's not a messiah, not a demon. Just a man who, for some odd reason, believes that he has the right to run for president of the United States, and that enough people are willing to roll up their sleeves and work with him to make this a better America.

Go ahead and fight for the USA. That's a good thing. But fight for her progress and her promise. Just don't continue in this vicious negative vein and leave so much death and destruction in your wake, that it’ll take another 200 years to undo the damage. Who do you think is going to be able to clean that mess up?

Fighter4USA, Since you insist on spamming this same mess, I'll respond to you again. I must ask you though, do you really believe this mess, or do you just feel that it's your duty to spread it? Oh well, here goes (my same answer to you as the last time I saw this post on another blog):

I feel so badly for Obama. Because of all the unfair attacks on him he has to defend himself all the time. Michelle doesn't get a break from the media either. They hardly ever cover her speeches as opposed to Mr Former President. And she provides so much important information and detail about Barack's policies that he sometimes doesn't get a chance to, since he is always on the defensive these days.
I would love for BO to be able to just talk policy and ideas but Hillary won't let him catch a break. At the end of it all we'll have is an exhausted beat up candidate (OBAMA, of course) with little to no time to launch an effective campaign against the Karl Rove GOP machine...And Hillary will be crying foul and unfair as usual.

Everyone loves to call Hillary a "Fighter" but please tell me who or what she's ever fought for besides her own and Bill's self interests?

sO When John McCain is sworn in next January I'd like you all to remember who let him win:

THE CLINTONS

Waaahhhh. Hillary won't let him catch a break! It's an election. People are still voting. Not everyone wants to see Barack Obama as the nominee, Pennsylvania is an example of that. But I suppose Hillary should stop giving people a choice.

** He created them himself":
Barack Hussein Obama’s disturbing associations with
a domestic terrorist (Ayers), to a prominent Palestinian advocate of suicide bombings
(Khalidi), a corrupt Iraqi billionaire (Auchi), a sleazy personal fundraiser and
mafioso (Rezko), and to his own genocidal maniac of a cousin from Kenya (Odinga),
for whom Obama led a “positive” campaign effort to achieve his “election” a few
years back. As many of us know, Obama’s camp has recently taken a defensive stance
and have dedicated countless hours to spread the word around the internet that these
issues are “irrelevant” to a Presidential campaign and that bringing them up are
thus a full exemplification of “dirty politics”.

Wow! this one's a re-run, too. Got anything new? Or better yet, why don't you stop copying your poison files and do some indepth research about the tales you're telling. It's perfectly okay (and not un-American), to prefer one candidate over another for whatever reason. But to purposely attempt to damage the reputation of someone so that your candidate can win "by any means necessary" -- can you say "Enemy of the State"?

No bias in this article, huh? She "mistakenly" mentioned sniper fire in Bosna--three times. Wow, she must be soooo tired running against one newcomer. He, however, is running against three Washington pros. I wonder how Hillary would have done if Michelle Obama had as much press as Bill and Chelsey, or if the Republicans weren't publicly supporting her, or if she hadn't started this campaign with a 20 point lead. Probably not so good.

Oh come on people! this was a good article! She also mentioned how Obama has continued to make "Bitter" remark mistakes! How he's away from his family so much! How they can't afford to keep going like this! every thing was true and realistic! I appaud her for this unbias article. We don't see this freshness often! She repeats on what Hillary says to her about the Bosnia thing! she doesn't add her opinion to either person. She doesn't bame or default either for their mistakes or tiredness problems! Simple and straight forward! It takes however give a insight to how much more tireing this must be for a older 60 year old to a young 46 year old person! It is some thing I hadn't thought of before! So all in all this is a good article, not favoring either candidate! This is how the campagne and candates should be talking with cander, honesty and freshness of realistic problems and forthought.
