Clinton Challenges Obama To Debate Without A Moderator, Lincoln-Douglas Style

Hillary Clinton

MARION, Ind. — Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton turned up the rhetoric Saturday in their increasingly heated primary battle as she issued a new debate challenge and he complained of a race that's largely been reduced to trivia while working families feel economic pain.

Clinton took the debate dispute to a new level, challenging Obama to face off with her in a debate without a moderator, Lincoln-Douglas style.

"Just the two of us, going for 90 minutes, asking and answering questions, we'll set whatever rules seem fair," Clinton said while campaigning in South Bend.

Her campaign made the offer formal with a letter to the Obama campaign.

Obama aides said he had already debated Clinton 21 times, "the most in primary history."

"Over the next 10 days we believe it's important to talk directly to the voters of Indiana and North Carolina," said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.

The more open style of debating where each side presents an argument gets its name from the famed debates that took place during the 1858 U.S. Senate race in Illinois between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Democrat Stephen Douglas.

Trailing in delegates and the popular vote, Clinton has been stepping up the pressure on Obama for more debates in advance of primaries on May 6 in Indiana and North Carolina. Clinton argued that Obama won't debate because he's unhappy with questions from moderators during the April 16 debate just before the Pennsylvania primary. After that debate, Obama complained it focused too much on political trivia and too little on real issues.

On the campaign trail Saturday, he sounded much the same theme.

"I was convinced that the American people were tired of the politics that's all about tearing each other down. The American people were tired of spin and PR, they wanted straight talk and honesty from their elected officials," Obama said at a town hall meeting in the aging industrial city of Anderson.

"If you watched the last few weeks of this campaign, you'd think that all politics is about is negative ads and bickering and arguing, gaffes and sideline issues," said Obama. "There's no serious discussion about how to bring jobs back, to Anderson."

Both rivals were focusing on Indiana, with Clinton bringing along popular Sen. Evan Bayh and talking about reviving the industrial economy.

"We can do that again, but we need, as Senator Bayh said, a president who doesn't just talk about it but who actually rolls up her sleeves and gets to work," said Clinton.

The two Democratic candidates were stumping in the heart of Republican territory, and Obama sought to reach across party lines, saying he's struggled to avoid the back-and-forth bickering of the campaign, and talk about issues like plant closings that have damaged cities like Anderson.

"I've been trying to resist that in this campaign and I will continue to resist it when I'm president of the United States," said Obama.

Clinton campaigned in eastern Indiana industrial pockets, seeking to build a coalition of working-class voters similar to the one that served her well in neighboring Ohio.

While the upcoming primaries in Indiana and North Carolina are crucial to her candidacy, but Clinton deflected questions about how she would handle a loss.

"I don't make predictions or speculate on things that haven't happened yet," said Clinton.

Obama is favored in North Carolina, but the polls have shown the race in Indiana far too close to call.

With no end in sight soon for the Democratic contest, Obama sought to ease worries that the intraparty fight will leave the party vulnerable in November.

"Everybody is kind of nervous about this Democratic primary, it's been going on a long time," said Obama. "I have my differences with Senator Clinton and she has her differences with me. We will be united in November and beat John McCain and the Republicans."

Obama also underscored his differences with McCain, the certain GOP nominee.

"John McCain says he's different, but when you look at his policies he's got no agenda for you, how to make you a little more successful," Obama told his heavily blue-collar audience. "We know in our hearts that this country is not going down the right track. Something needs to change right now and that's what's at stake in this election."

In Anderson, Obama noted that McCain has switched views on issues like tax cuts for the rich to curry favor with the GOP base. "The straight talk express lost a wheel," said Obama.

McCain's campaign was quick to respond. "This again shows that Barack Obama doesn't understand the economy. Americans are looking for proof that the next president is going to be someone who understands their needs," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

While Clinton was busy campaigning in the Hoosier state, husband Bill was looking ahead to Oregon's Democratic primary on May 20. The former president was in his second day of a swing around Oregon, stopping Saturday in the small towns that dot the Willamette Valley before winding up in Portland on Saturday night.

In Albany, Ore., he outlined his wife's plans for energy independence, and highlighted her vote against a Bush administration bill that gave final say over the siting of liquefied natural gas terminals to the federal government, instead of the states. Several such terminals are under consideration now in Oregon.

He also promised the crowd that if elected, the former first lady would restore federal payments to timber dependent counties.

Why don't we go back to The League of Women voters moderating?

Or Obama should agree but only if Clinton wears a lie detector?

If you can live with this.....
Then go ahead and vote for the Neocon in a donkey-suit.
How blatant does it have to be before you see the truth.

Like OBama is ever going to agree to that style of debate with Hillary. He couldn't even handle any of the debates, even those where he was ass kissed and giving a free pass for 90 minutes from the commentators.

It wasn't until the ABC news debate, where the heat was put on him for the first time, that everyone who supports him, himself, his supporters, the MSNBC media, decided it was time to stop the debates, because precious Obama had to sweat a little.

Poor Obama. It just wasn't fair.

NO.. poor Hillary. She's LOST! And my 9-year old niece could have been more successful running her campaign.

She had better dip into some of her $109 million to replenish her campaign funds and stop worrying about a 22nd debate to gain free airtime simply because she can't afford it!

FACE IT! SHE IS THROUGH!
12:38 AM on 04/28/2008
Heat, heat, you call that heat, any one associated with ABC "news" and the so called debate "moderators", they couldn't generate enough "heat" to light a can of sterno between them.

First of all anything that lends credence to this sham trumped up media event called "Hillary's desperate fight for the nomination" by who else - the "media" is a bogus event. An event that so closely mimicks the scum Rove and his tactics of divide and conquer that the intent is transparent to everyone not blindly sipping the koolaid. The die is cast everyone knows and respects this, thats why McCain is ramping up the attacks on Obama. As is the media and Hillary just aids and abets this act. Their worst fear has been realized. Thats why Rush said "...if we have to run against Obama, we're doomed".

Some people sound so ignorant when they say things like, "he is afraid to debate her".

He wasn't afraid to debate her 21 times, and now, all of a sudden, the BOOGY MONSTER is scaring him into not debating her.

She just wants and needs the free publicity. Why don't she debate, with the people running her campaign, as to why they are in a sad state of dismay!
11:51 PM on 04/27/2008
21 times with moderators. His campaign complained he couldn't address the issues important to him. Clinton has a solution. He refuses. He is just feeding the perception that he can't stand up for himself.

He needs to learn to live in the world as it is, not as he wishes it to be. Americans do not elect weak (perceived or otherwise) persons as President.
He says there have been enough debates so that everyone knows his positions. I have tried to get information from his website. It's very wordy and lacking in details. I would like to hear him and Clinton debate health care so I can finally figure out what each stands for.
12:13 AM on 04/28/2008
"Clinton has a solution"? Whatever with her "solution"!

Why does she not have a "solution" to run a successful campaign as opposed to one that is defunct?

You state you,"tried to get information from his website. It's very wordy and lacking in details".

Are you sure you visited the correct website regarding his "healthcare" issues?

Your statement has no credibility because it is full of pertinent information regarding healthcare so I dont know what you're talking about!

Obviously you are a Hillary supporter just talking out your a**.

Anyone that visits this website would not be able to agree with your statement!

Lacking in details - Yah right! Would you like him to personally visit you and read you a bedtime story named, "Obamas Healthcare Handbook".

Either you did not read the correct website or you are Helen Keller!

Like I said hear me roar. Want to beat him up even more.

No wonder Bill is humping other women. She probably beats on him to.

EVen when getting slammed in a debate, she still beat his butt. Too bad huh.

I wouldn't worry about Bill humping other women. I bet bull dog Michele, does a lot of beating up on wussy Obama. That's for sure.

Clinton is desperate and she's flailing about with ideas she thinks might take down the uppity upstart. She's merely hoping she can provoke Obama into making some trite slip of the tongue so she can go for his throat. And, of course, if he won't debate Mrs. Abraham Lincoln for the twenty-thousandth time that REALLY proves he's a all hot air and a sissy. This former candidate needs to clear the way for the real leader. I would say the Clintons have jumped the shark but with these two it's the sharks that are doing the jumping.
02:08 PM on 04/27/2008
I'm at a loss as to why no one is reporting bringing up the fact that Clinton pulled out of the first scheduled debate in NC. Also, how 'bout Hillary dodging her competitor in '06 when he was asking for debate after debate. Truth is, if the roles were reversed, she would not want to debate either.
12:15 AM on 04/28/2008
It's all about tactics. If people want debates, they will ask for them and those who refuse may get hurt. What Clinton did or did not do in '06 does not interest today's voters. If people understood Obama's positions better, it wouldn't hurt him to decline to debate. As you saw in PA., people wanted the debate, they were hungry for information and got rather less than they wanted. I suspect the people of Indiana want information too. It's Obama's choice but he has to live with the consequences.
02:54 PM on 04/27/2008
The only reason why Hillary wants to debate so badly is for the fact that she has no $, and just wants FREE AIRTIME.

you say, "if he won't debate Mrs. Abraham Lincoln for the twenty-thousandth time that REALLY proves he's a all hot air and a sissy."

We'll see how much "hot air" and sissy-fied he is when he's debating the dinosoar.

There are no facts she will deliver.

Hilary's hurtful remarks fly from her mouth faster than a birds.

Obama's chips may have been down, but now he's

Pass the buck is flying hi in Obama's corner.

Hilary is boiling because she wants people to think she has more knowledfge about things than she really does.I think now the people are beginning to see between the lines. Polls aren't moving.

Truth is we can all boil at certain degrees. Obama chooses not to take that route. He is a very decent, more liked guy.

Spitfiring gets you know where.

Senator Clinton, I have read about Abraham Lincoln,

Lincold led the Union in the Civil War to prevent the Southern states from seceding from the United States.
He averted Britain's involvement in the Civil War during the Trent Affair in November 1861.
He signed the Homestead Act in 1862, which awarded land to settlers who agreed to farm the land for five years.
He issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, abolishing slavery in states rebelling against the United States.
Lincoln created a national banking system and standardized currency with the National Banking Act in February 1863.

Lincoln was a great man, a true leader, a friend to those who were oppressed.

SENATOR, YOU'RE NO ABRAHAM LINCOLN!!!!!!!!

Right, I was thinking the same thing. Early in the primary season, Obama surrogates and the media, tried to compare him to MLK, RFK, JFK, and even Abraham Lincoln.

It was laughable then, and it is even more laughable now.

Hillary may not be Abe Lincoln either, but she is way more qualified to be President that Mr. Barack phony Obama.

i am Not a Hillary supporter or mindless Republican.
yet...
just because you did something 21 times incorrectly...
does not mean that you should stop trying to do that something correctly.

a Lincoln-Douglas Debate is what should have been done...
the First time.

Obama's justification of avoiding any form of a 22nd public interaction with Clinton...
belies the Reality that Obama and Clinton were both always choosing the Safest path - 21 times over - "no serious discussions..." about what Truly matters.

Nobody wants to witness one more juvenile "debate" between Democrats.

However, we have NOT had a Lincoln-Douglas Debate, right ?

FYI, we ALL would want to see a Lincoln-Douglas debate between Obama and McCain.
Right ?

Why ?
Obama would EXPOSE McCain for the slack-jawed-reactionary that McCain desperately hides by avoiding OPEN encounters with anybody with a Clue.
Of course, Ms. Clinton would also expose Mr. McCain.

We ALL want to see Mr. McCain exposed for what he Truly is - correct ?

And that Cannot happen with the pointless time-wasting addresses-nothing "debate" style that Americans have been force-fed.

Thus, LOGIC tells us that IF Obama and Clinton DO have a Lincoln-Douglas Debate....
that...
McCain is Forced (by Democrat precedence) to RISK exposing himself in a Lincoln-Douglas debate with the Democratic Presidential Candidate.

IF the Democrats Refuse to Lincoln-Douglas Debate...
there will be NO Lincoln-Douglas Debate between McCain and either Obama or Clinton.

See how that works ?

hess

Be real. Remember, politics is personal for Hillary Clinton. In her own words, this isn't about McCain or the country. For the voters, on the other hand, it is. Clinton amply demonstrated during her failed campaign that she does not have much the moral character and leadership to be president. Putting on Abraham Lincoln's beard (you don't really think she's implying she's Douglas, do you...?) isn't going to suddenly negate what months of close observation has shown. We don't need her to trot out on stage one more time when all she's really looking is an opportunity to goad Obama into making some small slip while she's waiting with a hatchet she's hiding behind her back. Her campaign is over and she's not helping anything except her ego anymore.
