TEHRAN, Iran — A top Iranian judiciary official warned Monday against the "destructive" cultural and social consequences of importing Barbie dolls and other Western toys.

In the latest salvo in a more than decade-old government campaign against Barbie, Prosecutor General Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi said in an official letter to Vice President Parviz Davoudi that the doll and other Western toys are a "danger" that need to be stopped.

"The irregular importation of such toys, which unfortunately arrive through unofficial sources and smuggling, is destructive culturally and a social danger," said the letter, a copy of which was made available to The Associated Press.

Iranian markets have been inundated with smuggled Western toys in recent years partly due to a dramatic rise in purchasing power as a result of increased oil revenues.

While importing the toys is not necessarily illegal, it is discouraged by a government that seeks to protect Iranians from what it calls the negative effects of Western culture.

Najafabadi said the increasing visibility of Western dolls has alarmed authorities and they are considering intervening.

"The displays of personalities such as Barbie, Batman, Spiderman and Harry Potter ... as well as the irregular importation of unsanctioned computer games and movies are all warning bells to the officials in the cultural arena," his letter said.

Najafabadi said Iran is the world's third biggest importer of toys and warned that smuggled imports pose a threat to the "identity" of the new generation.

"Undoubtedly, the personality and identity of the new generation and our children, as a result of unrestricted importation of toys, has been put at risk and caused irreparable damages," he said.

Mattel Inc., the maker of Barbie, had no immediate comment on the Iranian letter.

Barbie is sold wearing swimsuits and miniskirts in a society where women must wear head scarves in public and men and women are not allowed to swim together.

In 1996, the head of a government-backed children's agency called Barbie a "Trojan horse" sneaking in Western influences such as makeup and revealing clothes.

Authorities launched a campaign of confiscating Barbies from toy shops in 2002, denouncing the un-Islamic sensibilities of the iconic American doll. But the campaign was eventually dropped.

Also in 2002, Iran introduced its own competing dolls _ the twins Dara and Sara _ who were designed to promote traditional values with their modest clothing and pro-family stories. But the dolls proved unable to stem the Barbie tide.

It all comes down to what we buy for our children. The glitz & glamor, sparkle & fantasy how can a little girl resist? Dolls entertain and teach. We know what draws their attention so it's up to us to provide for that need with a more positive model, not a plastic/fantastic type. Kids need that, first you dream then you do.
When I was a girl, just after the Ice Age, one of my favorite set of paper dolls was Grace Kelly, she was a glam, beautiful star about to become a princess and live happily ever after. I still remember the outfits.
The American Girl dolls are very sweet. My point is if we stopped buying barbie she would fade away, although I think the implants would live forever...lol.

Wow, a lot of anti-Iranian hate here. Just so you know, it's the Iranians who are buying the barbies, and the dogshit government authorities who want them to stop buying it. And for every asshole out there making a suicide bomber joke, name me one Iranian who has ever suicide bombed something. Racists.

WTF?! I personally was making fun of the Iranian government, for making a big deal over something as trivial as a Barbie-doll toy. Surely they have more worthwhile things to debate. I AM of Iranian descent, tell me how I'm racist.

I agree with Iran - they should quit selling this type of Barbie there. Mattel should start making a jihad Mujahideen Barbie to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.

The original Barbie was a german sex CARTOON..read on if ur interested.
"In 1957 whilst visiting Germany, Ruth Handler (founder of Mattel Toy Co) purchased a Lilli Doll. The dolls were based on a cartoon strip in Das Bild. In the comic strip Lilli was portrayed as a sultry, sexual character aimed at men. "
This next part is really rich...LMAO.
"This was the complete opposite of the ideals Ruth wanted the doll to represent: purity and innocence. With a few changes to the heavy make-up, full lips and slight alterations Barbie was created.
Do you remember the first cat-eyed barbie? She looked like a street-walker who would topple forward with large chest and teeny-tiny feet. Ruth's young daughter barbie found the kinky sex toy quite appealing prompting Ruth to make it..''pure & innocent' LOL..Sort of a Toy Story meets Pretty Woman. This is soooo funny...I have nothing against kinky sex. In fact I find it most enjoyable, but don't piss on me and tell me it's raining.
Mattel....It's SWELL.

I always believed Barbie was the face of a culture with bad morals. Barbie emphasized a girl with no visible means of support, with cars, jewelry, and a house. Barbie's profession was clear.

And so I refused to let my daughter have a Barbie. My daughter also helped me fix many things about the house, from about the age of 2.

One friend's birthday she was given a Barbie as a party favor. My wife picked her up from the party, and she walked in the back door of the house, handed me the Barbie, looked me straight in the eye, and asked "Daddy, can you fix her morals"?

I had to confess, to my 5 year old, that this, I was unable to fix.

This is bull. I have a 5 yr old and she doesn't even know the word, much less understand the meaning of morals. Her classmates - 5yr olds too are just the same: too young to assign morals to anybody or anything. Come off of it! If anything your child heard you or someone around her expressing a critical opinion and now is parroting it back. In fact your story doesn't tell us anything about your child, but about you and the environment you're raising her in.

That is not to say that barbi is a good thing. But if it wasn't for barbi, there would be something else we need to guard our kids against. It all comes down to good parenting in the end. But keep a sense of proportion, barbi is not a demon either.

For whatever it's worth, I'm pretty sure the kids in the Texas polygamist compound were 'safe from barbies' and much good that did to them...

Nobody puts Barbie in a corner!

If this isn't a reason to get behind a full scale attack I don't know what does!

Sheesh... can't Mattel just make some Barbie that are more conservatively dressed? Problem solved.

It's good to see that the Iranians are finally starting to take this threat to their culture and identity seriously. There is no reason whatsoever why they should have to suffer from western influence. Their culture is very old and should be respected. In fact it would be a good idea to start teaching Islam in our schools and places of work so as to be more sensitve to the Islamic mindset and offer our own citizens the ability to convert. Also it might be a good idea if we had our woman start covering themselves more so as not to upset the Islamic people any more than we have to. I suppose we could start that training in our schools as well. Eventually of course our girls can learn this at home as they will not need to go to school once again so as to not upset Islamic sensabilities.

I can just hear the AIPAC chorus!

"Any Iranian attack on Barbie will be met with massive retaliation."

"We could obliterate Iran!"
