The tax rebate checks the government has promised have begun showing up in people's bank accounts:

The government began depositing tax rebate checks in thousands of bank accounts on Monday as the stimulus program aimed at giving the ailing economy a jump-start got under way early.

The Internal Revenue Service started making the direct deposits on Monday with the goal of completing 800,000 payments each day over the first three days of this week. No deposits will be made Thursday while the IRS prepares a big batch of 5 million direct deposits scheduled on Friday.

The IRS had expected to begin the program in May but was able to start a few days earlier by utilizing a computer system that can process payments on a daily basis. The government's paper checks will start going out on May 9, a week earlier than previously announced.

George Bush ain't got a clue, 600$ ? thats what he makes an hour right? rebate? drop the price of gas/fuel $1.00 thats a rebate, and that might save the trucking industry, With out trucks things will get complicated, trucks bring everything, odds are if you have it a truck brought it. To bad out elected officials are so far removed from reality. Economic stimulus? Vaseline, still hurts !George you need to get out more!

Your acceptance and endorsement of your government's incompetence at running a stable economy has been bought and paid for. "The check is in the mail".

Do you mean to sound incredibly smug, nolibrals? Your comment would have more bite if we liberals were indeed as greedy as the right-wingers. I'm permanently disabled, barely getting by on a fixed income and as a proud liberal I refuse to take part in a program which is nothing more than guaranteed income for the credit industry. The vast majority of Americans who get these checks will use them to pay down their debts. The only people who are going to see any economic stimulus are the credit companies. George W. Bush vehemently denied that this country was heading into recession and refused to do anything to help the lower and middle class tax payers. That is, until reports of serious losses in the credit market due to a dramatic rise in client defaults. Then all of the sudden Bush came up with a plan for sending checks out to an American public drowning in debt. Gee, where do you think most of that money is going to end up? I challenge all those Republicans who are smart enough to realize that increasing our national debt does nothing to stimulate our economy to refuse your checks as well.

If we return the checks they'll go in Bush and Cheney's deep pockets. What a bunch of crooks!

The rebate will help pay for FOOD and GAS to put in the car to go get it. I for one won't be spending it on anything for pleasure.........
