James Frey And Nan Talese: Oprah Duped Us!

Amid the Miley Cyrus hoopla, it's easy to forget that there's a whole issue of Vanity Fair that comes out today. And one article in the magazine that is a must-read is Evgenia Peretz' interview with James Frey (supposedly the last interview he will ever give).

The article attempts to be the definitive account of how Frey went from addict to screenwriter to best selling author to public enemy, and how he picked up his million little pieces to write another novel, Bright Shiny Morning.

As Peretz details in the following excerpt, Frey and his publisher Nan Talese claim that Oprah — who went from champion to critic in a matter of weeks — duped them, tricking them to get on her show under false pretense and then attacking them as soon as the cameras began to roll:

As Talese recounted at a televised publishing conference last July, the show invited her and Frey together. Talese initially resisted. Then they were approached with a new pitch. The topic was going to be "Truth in America," and they wanted Talese on a panel with columnists Frank Rich, of The New York Times, and Richard Cohen, from The Washington Post. Given this scenario, Talese agreed. But when she and Frey arrived at Harpo Studios, in Chicago, they were told that the program was not, in fact, about Truth in America; it was about the James Frey controversy. Winfrey told Frey it would be rough, but said there would be redemption in the end. There was no redemption. From beginning to end, it was, according to Talese, "a public scourge."

Oprah, who just two weeks before had stood by the "essential truth" of Frey's story, now pounced on his every other word, while the audience booed him.

"I've struggled with the idea of it and ... " began Frey, in a typical exchange.

"No, the lie of it," snapped Oprah. "That's a lie. It's not an idea, James. That's a lie."

"I feel like I came here, and I have been honest with you," he said at the end of the hour. "I have, you know, essentially admitted to ... " "Lying," Oprah broke in....

"He felt trapped and cornered," recalls Talese today. A spokesperson for Oprah claims that "Truth in America" was always the topic for the show and that Talese had been informed of the full range of questions in the pre-interview. Talese maintained (as she still does) that memoirs have always been personal impressions, and didn't seem to realize that, for better or for worse, the game was now up. She was disgusted at the spectacle Oprah was making, appalled at her manners and at what she allegedly told Frey after the show was over: "I know it was rough, but it's just business." Winfrey denies ever making such a comment. "Once again, the truth is not being served here," she says in a statement to Vanity Fair. "In 22 years of doing this show, I have never said to anyone, 'I know it was rough, but it's just business.' This was beyond business. This was about the trust I share with the audience who faithfully supports the Book Club and buys the books I recommend; and based on that trust, I thought we were owed an explanation about the truth of this memoir."

Oh the systematic mythical self-victimization of the guy. Embarrassing.

Oprah is a fraud just like Obama. She runs a corrupt all-girls school in Africa where the kids are molested, raped and denied visitation rights by their parents. She threw her weight behind a candidate simply because of the color of his skin, instead of his experience and track record of public service. Please thank her in November, if Obama should steal this nomination from the better candidate, and then lose the general election - which he will. Thank the Huffington Post and Moveon.org too for their lack of judgment as well. We lost in 2004 cause they pushed the hell out of GAY MARRIAGE now they're making RACE the most important issue facing this country and the world.

What a load of shit this is. Not even going to bother counter-pointing it... Speaks for itself really. But in case you didnt notice, race IS one of the most important issues facing the country AND the world. The ability to get along is something you dont think is important? Ok then...

marco34la: Well, you're entire comment is garbage except the part about gay marriage ... this is a non-issue and I never, ever, ever want to freaking discuss it again. There are about 100 million things more important in the world than same sex marriage.

Let's see ... Is the huffingtonpost telling the truth, or is it going after Oprah because she actually no longer supports Obama?

I'm going to give Oprah some credit here. I am not a fan of hers and I don't watch her show, but I do think she is sincere. I can't imagine her saying, "I know it was rough, but it's just business", after grililng Frey. I could be wrong, though.

Cheers to Frey for turning his life around. Is there a biography out there that doesn't contain some fiction?

This thread is, quite possibly, the most asinine on this site -- which is really saying something.

And yet you feel compelled to read it and then express your opinion about it.

Why do you assume that he/she was "compelled" to read it? Don't you think that the huffs are going after Oprah because she is not supporting anymore Obama? Why do you think many of the most succesfull, and I am not talking financially here, people within the African-American community are not Obama supporters? Does not that tell you something?

Little play is being given to the Vanity Fair story that adds to the sordid tale of James Frey, the pariahic neo-memoirist of "Million Little Pieces."

Frey and his editor, Nan Talese, claim they were lured with lies into doing the second TOWS show during which Oprah gave her famous dressing-down. Oprah only weeks earlier had called the controversy "much ado about nothing."

It was only after the New York Times' Frank Rich and the Washington Post's Richard Cohen took O to task for indifference to truth that she stabbed Frey with her tongue.

Frey claims that after the verbal lashing, Oprah told him, "I know it was rough, but it's just business." Oprah indignantly denies this claim.

Connecting the dots has long fallen off the agenda of America's corporate media who finds synergy more rewarding. But no media outlet I know of investigated further the report that Oprah producers knew about claims that Frey's book was fiction.

The final word is yet to be written: Kitty Kelley of "poison pen" fame, is under contract to write a tell-all on Oprah. Kelley's publisher is Crown, an imprint of Random House, as is the Talese's publisher Doubleday. The announcement of Kelley's contract came shortly after Oprah's public flogging of Frey. Payback can be a bitch.

"Payback can be a bitch"
You are right about that, especially if Oprah decides to never promote another Crown or Random House book.

I still say she should have read "Why I Committed Suicide" which is equally outlandish, yet all true and released prior to Frey's poor copycatting.

James Frey is the author of a million little lies that he represented as honest truth, and it is OPRAH who has duped the public?

So, let me get this straight: James Frey lies about his life story, to his editor, his publisher, the reading public, and Oprah (not to mention, probably his friends and family as well). Oprah finds out that he has been lying and tells him, accurately, that he is a liar. Frey then feels "trapped and cornered" because she confronted him about his lying? Oh, boo-fucking-hoo!

Nan Talese is either the stupidest person on the face of the earth, or a professional liar (oops -- she's an agent so that is probably redundant). She ought to be on the next bus to hell, and Frey should get a job with the liars in the Bush Administration.

She doesn't like people who embellish parts of their book but she doesn't have any problems with Jessica Seinfeld blatantly stealing recipies from someone else. She didn't just steal the recipies - she stole the title of the book and the design for the cover also. Why hasn't she called Jessica and asked her to be on her show where they will talk about "truth" and then have lots of people there gang up on her although she wasn't expecting it? In fact I'm sure Jessica will be back on her show next year. I just read she is stealing...I mean writing...a new book about birthday parties for children so she will need publicity for it.

At least Fry wrote his book and I didn't read it but apparently he just exaggerated some experiences but he was an addict and he did overcome addiction - that wasn't a lie. He didn't lie about his life - he lied about a few experiences.

One thing he didn't have to lie about, is the fact that he could deposit wheelbarrows full of money in his bank account, after Oprah promoted his little piece of fiction on her tv program.

Who knows what he lied about. Do you? How could anyone. For all anyone knows the entire thing is a fiction.

Considering he was peddling it as some sort of self-help guide, thats worth taking a look at when it comes to light that he is a fraud.

You seem to have a hardon over Jessican Seinfeld (someone who most have probably never even heard of). Start some kind of truth campaign if what you say is true and try to bring it to Oprah's attention.

I mean what is your point really? That Oprah doesnt REALLY care about artistic integrity and JUST targeted Frey? To what end? Why bother? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds?

I'm sure IF the shit you're saying about whoever this cook is is true, and Oprah became aware of it, she would lambast her also. I mean WHY not? Oprah doesnt have to answer to anyone except her audience.

Uh... does James Frey realize that he has a credibility problem? Why should we believe anything he says?

Why didn't Oprah call Jessica Seinfeld a liar for "lifting" recipes from another woman's book?
Probably because Jessica gave her 20 pairs of designer shoes. Oprah and Jessica had a kissy-fest on camera.
I read James Frey's book and knew by the second chapter that some of it was "embellished." If Oprah didn't realize it as she read the book, then she's not as smart as she claims!

Who cares, did the audience get any free stuff? That's what is important on Oprah.

Bottom line is, Frey wrote a book and hawked it as non-fiction when in fact it was all fiction. As for Oprah, she's disgusting and just tried to salvage her book club and her reputation but in the end only made it worse with this interview. Anyone could have sat there and called Frey a liar. Why he did what he did though and a discussion of 'truth' in fiction would have been more apt. Oprah makes you sick..

Leave Oprah alone.

It is hard to start a new religion with Eckart Tolle and to juggle all her other duties.

Eckart Tolle's new book is the most boring thing at the bookstore. WHY is Oprah promoting it?
