NEW YORK — After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters now says she had a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."

Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.

A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Brooke later divorced, and has since remarried. Calls to a listing for Brooke in Miami by The Associated Press were not immediately returned Thursday.

Walters is the guest of Oprah Winfrey to discuss her new memoir, "Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life. On "Oprah," Walters recounts a phone call from a friend who urged her to stop seeing Brooke.

"He said, 'This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your career,'" then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year later. "'This is going to ruin him. You've got to break this off.'"

Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love.

"I was certainly _ I don't know _ I was certainly infatuated."

"Infatuated."

"I was certainly involved," Walters says. "He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington."

Also during the program, Walters chokes up while describing the struggles of her older sister Jackie, who was mentally retarded. Walters confesses that, as a child, she sometimes felt embarrassed by Jackie.

"She stuttered terribly. People made fun of her. People made fun of me," Walters says. "I didn't bring friends home. I felt terribly guilty because she was very loving and I didn't always feel that way."

Jackie Walters died in 1985 of ovarian cancer.

"When I think of her, because she was beautiful and loving and all of that, it makes me cry."

Brooke served two full terms from 1967 to 1979, taking on the populist causes of low-income housing, increasing the minimum wage and mass transit. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, an honor only 21 U.S. senators have received.

Barbara Walters from 1978. Very comfortable around black people, LOL. I like her even more, now.

I meant to sign my name, Patricia Burstein, to this posting.

In recent days I have posted some unwarranted and fairly mean-spirited comments about Barbara Walters. I take them back. Confession: I was in a "grudgemeister" mood, still annoyed that she
turned me down for an interview many years after the two magazine cover stories, which I thought were fair-minded and actually quite positive. I took it personally, which it wasn't, because I was
unaccustomed to such a response from any previous interviewees. Why, with all the pressing issues of the day, I even bothered to comment in the first place was silly on my part. I regret the remarks I
attributed to Truman Capote, who skewered practically everyone at one time or another. Although many people called him "Tru," hardly anything he ever said was (true), owing to his fictive mind.
In truth, I had just come off interviewing Walters when I met up with Capote for a profile. So worried about his image after being hammered by his demi-monde disciples, he figured that he was flattering me, indirectly. The issue, with regard to Barbara Walters, is larger than myself. Internet postings
should not be used as sledgehammers to redress personal grievances. Although I always sign my name to any postings, I find that the anonymity allowed on the internet leaves all too much room for irresponsible comments. But back to Barbara Walters. I respect her and her fine work.

Although I am hardly a huge fan of BW's interviews, I do think she should be given credit for her
longevity on the air. As well, I do think she is a decent human being. Proof of this is something I observed in the course of interviewing her for two magazine covers back in the Seventies. She was
respectful and considerate of the people, in the studio and at home, who worked for her. This, in
my view, says a great deal about character. She also struck me as a perceptive person with a good sense of humor. Her affair with the Senator should not be of any moment to the media. Her
crush on Roy Cohen, such a loathesome creature, is what should raise eyebrows; a curisosity
because of her fine character. Patricia Burstein

Evidently, the pressures of the Senate will drive any man to desperate measures.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:56 PM on 05/02/2008

I'd hit it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:50 PM on 05/02/2008

Well, if I was his age at the time and it was a "Baba Wawa" who was 30 years younger than she is today, I can understand why he would have been tempted to. Maybe some people don't understand that we are talking about a slightly younger Barbara Walters from THIRTY YEARS AGO.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:55 PM on 05/08/2008

Hasselbitch is never going to forgive her for having an affair. The perfect one believes it is the greatest sin - too bad she won't show her outrage by leaving the show.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:10 PM on 05/02/2008

what trash to promote her book...I have never liked her...she is a big phony

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:47 PM on 05/02/2008

It's the true meassure of a person the way they treat others... she sunk as low as one can by revealing the affair to sell books. Loyalty is a rare thing these days and yet is the greatest gift one can share with another person. My marriage is based on Love Friendship Truth and Loyalty.

What's the matter, BaBa Wawa? Need a ratings boost? I guess when you turned in your journalistic credentials, you opted for the world's oldest profession just like so many in the MSM. And I don't mean agriculture.

It's twoo! It's twooo!

We all envy her-- what a woman! Who wouldn't want to have a love like that.. bravo Barbara...

Whitest looking Black man I've ever seen.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:28 PM on 05/02/2008

Oh jeez, you're sheltered. I'm from Louisiana, and that guy is avg. complexion compared to the black community I grew up in. Wavy hair, light colored eyes, etc. I have a friend who really looks white but both of his parents are black. And he punched out some guy on an elevator who made a racial slur, assuming he was in the company of other white ppl. He had no idea my friend was black. He found out the hard way. LOL

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:50 PM on 05/02/2008

You're right. I'm from New Orleans. I know lots of people who most people would never guess in a million were black, but they are. And, they all identify as African American, no matter how easily they could "pass".

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:51 PM on 05/02/2008

You've never seen Clarence Thomas...

"Hey! It was exciting times in Washington". What a riot! Good reason to drop down and get done Barb!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:19 PM on 05/02/2008

Numerous typos in this post. Many obvious corrections are needed.

Walters remembers Brooke as "exiting and bwilliant."

"I was certainwy _ I don't know _ I was certainwy infatuwated."

Go to your tool bar, select spell check, options, Fudd and this won't happen again.

Thanks.

Babs, is it true?? You'll never go back??

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:11 PM on 05/02/2008

Many of the younger ones do when they are ready to have children, or at least when they get out of college and go back home, lol.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:03 AM on 05/09/2008

This is the antithesis of "from the mouths of babes!"
Babs is chasing Dear Abby into the anals of history!
Next is Dr. Laura telling us that her son has the cigarette
concession for Haliburton in Iraq.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:06 PM on 05/02/2008

Talk about being ahead of her time.

I will say this: Sometimes "The View" is actually interesting, but affairs are so passé. When I get famous, I'll come clean on camera too.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:01 PM on 05/02/2008

EEEEwwwwww! Just the thought of that dried out old bag......eeeewwwww! GROSS!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:57 AM on 05/02/2008

Which one are you referring to?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 PM on 05/02/2008

This certainly puts her interview with Monica Lewinsky in a new perspective:
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1999/03/04/lewinsky.excerpts/

"BARBARA WALTERS: One juror, at the grand jury, asked you why you kept having affairs with married men. Why did you? Why do you?"

"BW: Did you ever say to yourself, "I'm doing something wrong. This is bad for the president. This is bad for the country." Did you ever think about that?"

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 AM on 05/02/2008

Excellent point!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:51 PM on 05/02/2008

Excellent point. Ol' Babs always kinda made my skin crawl even without the admission of the affair. But, you're right on with this. What a sickening hypocrite!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:46 PM on 05/02/2008

this just goes to prove the point again - these people { the pols., MSM, Hollywood, sports-jocks } live in their own world - they do not care about you or me. the things that they report on, analyze, cast opinion on and show to the whole world, we go to jail for. them, they put it in a book and make millions.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:36 AM on 05/02/2008

I have one question of Walters. Did she have the affair with Brooke knowing or hoping she could turn it into a money maker at some later point?

Barry Leonardini

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:24 AM on 05/02/2008

And this is how she is going to sell her book, is that it? I don't care who or how many she slept with. I used to like B. Watlers when she worked with Hugh Downs on the Today show..but she has gone to headline grabbing...and I won't read the book Barbara dear...don't have time or interest.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:14 AM on 05/02/2008
