NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg called a summer-long suspension of the gas tax favored by Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican John McCain a dumb idea.

The New York mayor, who flirted with the idea of an independent presidential bid, praised Democrat Barack Obama for opposing the plan to suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.2 cent diesel tax during the peak driving months of the summer.

All three candidates covet Bloomberg's endorsement. The mayor has spoken highly of Obama and McCain in introducing the two at recent events in New York.

Speaking to reporters at City Hall, Bloomberg said of the gas tax holiday, "It's about the dumbest thing I've heard in an awful long time, from an economic point of view. We're trying to discourage people from driving and we're trying to end our energy dependence ... and we're trying to have more money to build infrastructure."

He cited those three reasons for opposing the gas tax holiday favored by McCain and Clinton. Obama has said the savings would not be significant for the average individual, and Bloomberg agreed.

"The 30 bucks is not going to change anybody's lifestyle," he said. "The billions of dollars that we would otherwise have in tax revenues can make a big difference as to what kind of a world we leave our children."

The billionaire mayor said in February that he had decided not to run for president but has dangled the possibility of his endorsement. The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent has ties to all three candidates.

Most people don't know who Bloomberg is and many of those that do find his comments interesting. Now the man does have serious cash flow.

No the dumbest thing ever heard was the Manhattan commuter tax.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 05/05/2008

I just added up the numbers and for me I would be saving about $ 88.32 over 12 weeks.WOW! And on top of those huge savings the tax holiday would do away with about 300,000 construction jobs. If this stupidity does become law, remember all the savings you're getting, every time you drive over a bridge or overpass. Also remember what happened in Minn. last year(a bridge went down, killing dozens of people)!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:55 PM on 05/03/2008

Wait... are you telling me you are guzzling almost. 40 gallons of gas a week?

I am shocked. Our Prius runs on 20 gallons on gas A MONTH.

In everything else, we agree.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:28 PM on 05/03/2008

People, we need real solutions to real problems. Not gimmicks to fulfill campaign motives by making voters feel like 'She really feels our pain. I going to go and simulate the economy with my 30 bucks savings.'

And some will fall for this "hook line and sinker."

How pathetic!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:34 PM on 05/02/2008

Apparently the working crowd in Indiana and North Carolina would rather follow Hillary than Obama or Boomberg. It show you people like pandering.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:16 PM on 05/02/2008

This is another way to have Americans DETACHED from our most pressing problems
instead of asking them for sacrifice and committment to changing our habits.

It is poor leadership.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:40 PM on 05/02/2008

that argument then suggests that the govt should raise the tax on gasoline to at least a $1 per gallon. Then we will reduce our driving habits by not driving to NYC or DC to vacation during the summer.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:08 PM on 05/02/2008

Yes!

if you think gas is not headed to $5.00 a gallon, then you still believe in the tooth fairy and the easter bunny.

we can use the revenue for mass transit, r and d for alternative energy, and stiff the saudi overlords by reduced consumption.

we don't have time to work through all the 12 steps of addiction control--all we got left is cold turkey or bend over and take it easy...

ps--thank you republican voters--special thanks to senators kyl and mccain!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:42 PM on 05/02/2008

Mrs. Clinton is not stupid....she's just a shameless panderer. As for McCain ...he admitted he knows nothing about economics.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:00 PM on 05/02/2008

all politicians pander. how do you think they get elected. PANDERING!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:08 PM on 05/02/2008

So I suppose that means that by not supporting the gas tax moratorium - criticized not just by Blumberg, but by Tom Friedman, most other commentators, as well as most economists who have weighed in on this - Obama must be pandering to his base: those horrible "elitists" who are able to think critically and see past the ends of their own noses.

"Shame on you, Barack Obama, shame on you..."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:14 PM on 05/02/2008

Did HRC really say she doesn't have to listen to experts? Isn't that how Bu$hco got us into this fiasco and furthered it in all corners in regard to global warming and endangered species, etc.?

It is this brand of anti-intellectualism that scares me, frankly. Someone actually trained in his/her field (say education, like sex education) doesn't know as much as some Bible-thumping Congressman (like on how Abstinence Only Education is a failure or that Intelligent Design is "science" because they say so). Ugh. Is it any wonder why other countries have better prepared children for scientific/technology related jobs?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 AM on 05/02/2008

Bloomberg is right, but then again, it's pretty easy to attack an idea that has no merit whatsoever.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 AM on 05/02/2008

It really doesn't matter what is done or not done. The countrys big businesses are out of control with greed and will only do what helps them. The blue collar american is of absolutely no matter to them. Its not politicians, congress ... it is nothing more than corporate greed, strange how everyone sticks up for big business without question.
1. Oil companys, 2. bank mortgages, 3. bank credit cards, 4. unfair practices, 5. lower wages, 6. increase prices, I could go on........

This is all just smoke so the elite few top business people can make more money than a small city at our expense. I mean good God,there's only so much money you can even spend

STOP BIG BUSINESS before they destroy America

Vote every single leader, and third+term congressman OUT.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:07 PM on 05/02/2008

Of course he thinks it's a bad idea. This is a man who thinks you should tax anyone who drives into your city. Tax and tax and tax. That's the democrat way.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:56 AM on 05/02/2008

Bloomberg is not supporting a "democrat way." He has declared himself an independent but was elected as a Republican.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:47 AM on 05/02/2008

Turn our country into a dangerous crap-hole and let our kids pay to repair it. The republican way.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:41 AM on 05/02/2008

I get a kick out of out of everyone who has antipathy for taxing anything. We are spending 12 billion a month on the war and keep cutting taxes. In fact, this is the first time in any countries history to cut taxes during the ware. The tax money from gas is 10 billion per year to help our infrastructure. Also, the idea is TO CUT DOWN ON DRIVING. You probably drive your car an 1/8 of a mile and circle a parking lot 5 times to get a closer spot to the store. It's morons like you that make such idiotic statements that has caused our country to run up trillion dollars in debt. Why not just eliminate all takes and then people can collect their own garbage, build their own highways and police their own streets and get rid of public education. . It's unbelievable the level of stupidity in America.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:40 AM on 05/02/2008

The price of gas will remain the same. The only difference will be a tax shortfall for needed road and bridge maintenance and more job losses.

Less driving is a boon for the environment. We have to stop thinking of what is inconvenient for us and do what's necessary. For our future and our children's future.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:36 AM on 05/02/2008

Instead of eliminating the gas tax, let's earmark the gas tax to pay for alternative fuel. So every time we go to the pump, we are paying for a way to get us out of this oil dependency mess.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:24 AM on 05/02/2008

Just proves that John McCain is indeed clueless when it comes to economics and the economy. It also confirms my concerns about Hillary Clinton's judgement. I think this should make clear that pandering for votes is alive and well within these campaigns.

Of course they could care less about the midwest. Only the states that are fat with delegates. Howie the screamer thinks this should be over all ready, because Indiana and the midwest means nothing to them, until it matters.

This is just the typical democrat mindset about anyone who has values.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:13 AM on 05/02/2008

She is done and knows it. Obama could loose both states next week and he will still win. She is realizing that she doesn't have the stroke.

The gas tax holiday isn't real. It is an empty promise that no one has to deliver on because if she won, she would already have the oval office and wouldn't need us dumb asses anymore to vote for her. She would have already fooled us enough.

Since when is following the lies of BUSH a CHANGE? Since when is following the orders of Wall Street CHANGE? All the so called experts are neck deep in oil speculation and are terrified that anybody would try and stop their scam.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:33 AM on 05/02/2008

Naw, Bloomberg's base is among east coast liberal yuppies, which is a block Obama has sewn up. Bloomberg might have a cabinet position, governorship, or senate seat in his future.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:50 AM on 05/02/2008

Though I agree that the gas tax holiday is a poor idea, the argument that demand will increase because of an eighteen cent price decrease is disingenuous. Gasoline is one of the few commodities that is virtually exempt from the laws of supply and demand. When gas was 89 cents a gallon (about ten years ago), no one ran out and bought extra gas. And now that gas prices have been steadily rising for eight years, I still have to buy the same amount, regardless. It's not really a choice (for most people at least), and the law of supply and demand is based on the notion of choice. For example, if the price of pepperoni suddenly skyrocketed due a shortage of whatever pepperoni is made of, I would choose not to order it on my pizza. But my job remains twenty miles away, and there is no public transportation. Where is the choice? My point is that gas prices are based on the price of oil and the greed of oil companies, and nothing else.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:17 AM on 05/02/2008

you have a point to some degree but gas is elastic to the point where people will downsize their cars to compacts as evident by recent reports and thus consume less gas. People will also cut down on driving short distances. Yes people will ride their car to work but some will choose to car pool take mass transit where available.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:46 AM on 05/02/2008

The choice is in "going for a drive"-- ever hear of that phrase? It's a part of the American language. It could also be called "discretionary driving," and probably is. That has DECREASED as a result of price increases, I'm absolutely sure, because I and my friends here in the Los Angeles area, where driving is king, have decreased the amount of discretionary drives we are taking.

Many people also have a choice in whether they carpool or take alternate forms of transportation. I, for example, frequently travel from the Los Angeles area to San Diego. I am more likely to take Amtrak and less likely to take my car as a result of increasing gas prices.

The 18 cent gas tax holiday is insane because it just passes money from our government to those increasing their prices. The only message they can understand in the long run is conservation or competition. Making it easier for them to get the extra money they are demanding just encourages themj.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:10 AM on 05/02/2008

Let's assume you get the 18 cents passed on by the oil companies (which they don't have to, there is no law for that). So now you save two to three dollars every time you fill up. On the other hand, we now need to raise $9 billion somewhere to repair the roads and keep the people who repair the roads for us employed. So we borrow the $9 billion. So the dollar's value drops a little bit more. So now you pay more for everything that we import, not just oil. Sounds like a good deal?

As for transportation: you can drive a smaller car or you can share the ride. In the end you will have to suck it up. There is no other solution, no matter how hard and unfair it feels.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:02 AM on 05/02/2008

Good for you Mr. Bloomberg to come and say that this gas tax holiday proposal is such dumb idea. When all the newspaper or TV were saying economic experts, you think the voters know or listen? I don't think they do. They need someone they know or at least a well known figure to come out and say it is dumb. Some would have thought this is a topic close to Gore's heart and that he should come out and say something, but sadly it is not in his agenda. What is the matter with our government officials nowadays? they only do thing or say thing which benefit them. So disappointing!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:02 AM on 05/02/2008

What is Al Gore running for? These are polticians trying to curry favor with voters this year. Bloomberg may not be running for anything yet, but he has it in the back of his mind. Did anyone ask VP Gore his opinion?
