Clinton Camp Defends Gas Plan: She Doesn't Need To Listen To Experts

Aides to Sen. Hillary Clinton defended on Thursday her support for a gas-tax holiday - a proposal that has been roundly criticized by economic and energy experts and derided among pundits as political pandering.

"Senator Clinton realizes there is a problem for consumers that requires both a short term and long term set of solutions," said Howard Wolfson, her chief spokesperson. "In the short term, she has laid out a plan to suspend the tax and have those resources or revenues paid by oil companies as well. In the long term, she has the boldest and most comprehensive plan that will increase fuel efficiency standards... help lawmakers retool their production facilities."

Wolfson said that Clinton would introduce legislation to alleviate the gas tax burden on consumers over the summer by having a windfall tax on oil company profits pick up the tab. He was non-committal as to whether or not the senator would leave the campaign trail and return to Washington to push the legislation.

Aides to Clinton could not, when asked, point to a single non-political expert who supported such a proposal, saying simply that it is a president's prerogative when to take expert advise.

"We believe the presidency requires leadership," said Wolfson. "There are times that a president will take a position that a broad support of quote-unquote experts agree with. And there are times they will take a position that quote-unquote experts do not agree with."

Pressed whether her decision to buck conventional wisdom -- energy analysts say the savings from the tax holiday would be minor and actually lead to an increase in demand for gas and driving -- contrasted with the notion that she has the greatest expertise on the economy, aides said no.

"The long and the short of it is that people are hurting today, and when you say that it doesn't save much money, our calculation is that for the average driver it would save 70 dollars," said chief strategist Geoff Garin. Internal polling, he added, said that the position was resonating with Indianans.

"We're seeing in our polling that working people appreciate the fact that Senator Clinton understands the incredible economic strain they are facing," Garin said.

Not mentioned on the conference call, but making its way around the Internet on Thursday, was a story from Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign in New York, when she came out in opposition to a gas tax holiday.

It is "a bad deal for New York and a potential bonanza for the oil companies," Clinton said of her Republican opponent Rick Lazio's plan to repeal 4.3 cents of the gas tax.

The campaign, on its website, said there was no contradiction between the two stances, pointing out that in 2000, the money would have been stripped from a highway trust fund, while in 2008, the senator would generate funds taxes on oil companies.

On Wednesday, The Huffington Post attempted to find one expert from any and all ideological persuasion who believed that a gas tax holiday is a wise idea. It proved impossible. However, the idea is likely popular in upcoming primary states like Indiana and Ohio, and other politicians, alongside Clinton, have argued that it is in the government's interest to give all consumers a bit of at-the-pump relief.

You wont hear about this after the Tuesday. It's just to get her thru then. It was NAFTA for Ohio, Guns for Pa, and this for NC and Ind. For Oregon and Montana, she will talk about the Environment and land rights. Of course, she doesn't mean a word of it.

Hmmmmmmm....doesn't have to listen to experts. Sounds familiar. I wonder if she will listen to experts before she "obliterates" Iran. She has the same rigid, stubborn, arrogant personality that George W. Bush has. Do we really want eight more years of THAT kind of attitude???

The gas tax "holiday" really IS stupid, considering we have bridges collapsing from under us and roads in need of major work all over the USA. I can already hear people screaming in September, after they've watched gas prices regularly increase over the summer, when the 18 cents a gallon returns, on TOP of these inevitable summer increases. To raise the prices by one or two pennies a gallon weekly is bad enough, but adding the lump sum of 18 cents when summer is over will really hurt. I guess Hillary and Bill haven't caused Americans to lose enough jobs through NAFTA; now Hillary wants more American road workers to be unemployed over the summer.

How bizarre.

Sure she will listen to the "experts" on Iran, the same ones she has been listening to all along; AIPAC.

They pay her tremendous amounts of money and give her a great deal of political support, and it's no wonder; two of their top officials are currently on trial for espionage against the United States for illegally receiving classified intel on Iran with the intent of using it to foment war between Iran and the US.

She would do ANYTHING to become president. Send your kids to Iraq? Without batting an eye. to Iran? in a heartbeat.

besides, I for one would not be able to sleep at nights knowing that the measly $30.00 I save would be costing 300,000 jobs. Sorry Hillary, I don't want that culpability on my head. I have too much compassion and understanding of what it is to lose one's job as with that comes, possibly losing your house, no food, car gets reposed and on and on......

sorry not worth it in my book or tank as the case may be....

It is attitudes like this that gets us into a mess of trouble.... that's why these people are called EXPERTS.. that their areas of expertise Hillary and as a good leader you OUGHT to listen to these people as the errors made by politicians create a whole slew of hardships for the ordinary folks...

So wise up and stop acting the fool.

It's just like the war in Iraq. In that case, most of the world, and MANY experts were suggesting that the entire thing was a fiasco waiting to happen.

But just like the gas tax, when senator Clinton sees an opportunity to pander in a way that gains her political capitol but is ultimately damaging, It doesn't matter WHO is trying to dissuade her, she is going to ACT.

Furthermore, since Hillary helped start the war, (and the one in Lebanon, and is also looking forward to totally obliterating Iran) not supporting her gas tax holiday is tantamount to not supporting the troops, and NO ONE wants to be accused of that, right?

The money for the gas tax comes from the fund that goes to repair the infrastructure (bridges, roads, etc) So if they cut that out people that are employed by companies that do that work will have to lay off workers. Not to mention the crumbling infastructure that we already have in this country, won't be repaired....DUH It's just another "robbing Peter to pay Paul" scheme.

The Clintons sound more and more like George Bush & Dick Cheney everyday.

Why aren't they in the Republican Party -- where they belong?
09:23 AM on 05/02/2008
Yes, ignorring the experts is a Bush trademark, makes Clinton sound like McSame.

Senator Clinton didn't go far enough. Let's not only eliminate the tax this summer. Let's take it off permanently. And, as long as we're at it, why don't we make the oil companies give us 1000 gallons of gas for free. No. Strike that. Let's make it 2000 gallons. Hey, I'm beginning to like her ideas.
08:39 AM on 05/02/2008
Don't you think the oil companies would just raise prices?
03:46 AM on 05/02/2008
Once again Hillary proves that she understands the people, while Obama only understands reality.
06:25 AM on 05/02/2008
She understands people alright. She understands how gullible they are, why else would she and her husband lie consistently to the American people? Remember "I did not have sex with that woman", and sniper gate? I have to watch my consumption of gas. I too have no money. Do you really think that without a gas tax that the price of gas will remain stable? Also, who will vote on this tax issue in the house and congress to make this permanent before the summer? Talk about gullible people.
02:49 AM on 05/02/2008
This is just the latest example of how Hillary always seems to line up with the Republican. Whether its the gas tax or the war or the patriot act, when can always count of Hillary to do the easy political thing. When Obama says that we need a change in the mindset that permeats Washington, this is what he means! Oh! That quote "it is a president's prerogative when to take expert advise," that sound the kind of thing George Bush would say!

Yeah she didn't need experts when voting to send us to war either. Its called pandering and its illegal in most states....
06:31 AM on 05/02/2008
You are right. She didn't read the whole report to find out the details. Just vote because a republican said it was so. Here she has the opportunity to do the research herself, talk to economists, what her own says. She proves to want to look like she can't do enough for the American people although she would in the long run hurt them. She is responsible for over 4,000 Americans dead in Iraq. How many casualties will there be for her callus behavior now.
12:31 AM on 05/02/2008
And how will she get enough Repugnicants to vote for any kind of tax, especially a tax on a group of companies that have Repugnicants in their pockets?

I'll bet you can find "experts" to support it....in the McCain campaign.

The only question now is....will Hillary be McCain's VP or will McCain be Hillary's VP?
