Update: As reported by Iowa Politics, Marty Parrish signed in to Sen. McCain's health care conference as a HuffPost reporter. Marty Parrish is not a HuffPost reporter or blogger, nor a contributor to HuffPost's OffTheBus. He was not asked to attend the McCain conference on our behalf, nor did he have any contact with HuffPost staff prior to the event.

At a town hall forum in Iowa yesterday, Sen. John McCain was asked about a story from Cliff Schecter's controversial recent book, The Real McCain, which alleges that during a 1992 campaign stop, McCain angrily called his wife a "trollop" and a "c**t" in front of aides and reporters.

Marty Parrish, a business owner in Des Moines, told OffTheBus's Keith Dinsmore that he asked McCain about the incident because he's concerned about how McCain's temper could impact his leadership.

"A guy who would call his wife a trollop and a c--t just because she had ruffled his hair in front of five guys is not only a jerk, but a dangerous hothead if he ever gets his finger on the button."

"And since the mainstream media has decided to give McCain a free pass, I decided to stand up and, if they gave me an open mike, ask the question that the press refuses to touched. Our country is in a serious crisis after nearly eight years of Bush, and America appears to be oblivious to the danger this guy (McCain) poses to our country."

Read the full and extensive interview with Marty Parrish here on OffTheBus, where you can also take a look at the flier Marty passed out at the event.

Here's the exchange from the forum:

Q: This question goes to mental health and mental health care. Previously, I've been married to a woman that was verbally abusive to me. Is it true that you called your wife a (expletive)?

McCain: Now, now. You don't want to... Um, you know that's the great thing about town hall meetings, sir, but we really don't, there's people here who don't respect that kind of language. So I'll move on to the next questioner in the back.

Schecter himself writes about the exchange at FireDogLake.

UPDATE: It turns out the man who asked the question is a Baptist minister worried about McCain's temper:

Clive businessman Marty Parrish was escorted from Sen. John McCain's town hall meeting by Des Moines police and members of the Secret Service after asking McCain if he had called his wife Cindy an expletive in 1992.

Parrish, an ordained Baptist minister who holds a master's degree in political science, was questioned by Secret Service agents before being released. He was not charged in the incident. Parrish asked whether McCain called his wife Cindy an expletive related to the female anatomy, as has been alleged in the book "The Real McCain," written by Dem strategist Cliff Schecter.

McCain's response got him a round of applause from the crowd: "There's people here who don't respect that kind of language, so I'll move on to the next questioner in the back."

In an interview with IowaPolitics.com, Parrish said his intentions were simple in posing the question to McCain. The former Joe Biden campaign worker stressed he is very concerned about the Republican presidential nominee's temperament.

"We have a man whose temper can get the best of him," Parrish said. "What I am worried about is his temper. Our country is in a serious crisis. This election is the most significant one since 1860. It appears America is asleep -- so I stood up and asked the question."

The HuffPo acts like it is distanced from this moron, and yet it covers the "story" again.

Cool.

This all helps our guy Obama, because America relates to our values here on the far left.

BHO '08!!

Did this logic of yours answer the accusation as to whether McCain publically profaned his wife or not, or is all a part of a vast left-wing conspiracy?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:32 PM on 05/05/2008

They don't respect that kind of language so they're going to stick their heads in the sand and support a candidate who uses it? And nice dodge of the question, McFoulmouth. Maybe all these fools deserve each other.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:52 AM on 05/05/2008

Of all the important questions this idiot could have asked he asks this dumb question nobody cares about. Shows his level of brains, can we say none...........

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:49 AM on 05/05/2008

I agree with you, that stuff is irrelevant to our national security, wars, health care, and many others. Now if we could only get that message thru to Haninity/colmbs,o'reilly,Greta,Hillary,Billary ,Stepphanopolus etc. perhaps we could ask Obama some important questions. He's getting a free ride wallowing in inconsequential questions like how long has he known Ayers, and did you know Rev. Wright was crazy? perhaps it's race baiting I guess.

4,071 Americans and untold numbers of Iraqi and Afghani men, women, and children killed in the war McCain loves so much, but the "news" is about a WORD he (may or may not have) said 15 years ago!
Question: which is really more offensive, the use of a word, or the slaughter of untold thousands of human beings, and the imprisonment and/or torture of many others?
Personally, I think the words "kill" and "torture" are much more offensive than the word "c..." -oops! I better not write it, the SS might get me!
What has this country come to?
For using a WORD, "...the questioner was escorted from Sen. John McCain's town hall meeting by Des Moines police and members of the Secret Service..."
That's the scary part here. Parrish did not "yell 'fire'in a crowded movie theater", for heaven's sake. Bye bye free speech.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:46 AM on 05/05/2008

There's nothing wrong with the word cunt per se. It can be used in positive, anatomically correct way or as a misogynystic term of abuse, as John McCain allegedly did. Rather than dismiss the word out of hand as offensive, he could have apologized for his abusive use of the word and turned it into a teachable moment. But then that would take some imagination.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:27 AM on 05/05/2008

He was/is no more a reporter or Baptist Minister than this site if fair-and-balanced (if this comment even makes it past the censorship). Parrish was a Biden opertive and his website says that he is broke please send money...................... just another kneejerk reaction, but someone is saying what you want to hear so you bite - and more than likely contribute.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:24 AM on 05/05/2008

As noted in the beginning of the article, he is not associated with HuffPo in any way. Secondly, HuffPo does not present itself as "fair and balance". You will need to go to Faux News for the balance as you know. Thirdly, someone needs to ask McCain some tough questions, as the MSM has decided to give him a free ride. I used to like McCain, until he became McBush and his "straight talk" became a little (much) less so.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:47 AM on 05/05/2008

MCain keeps dodging the question - and again the press continues to give him a major free pass. WHY? Is it because of his age? Come on - the man is running for the presidency.
We've been shown sound bites and reports 24/7 for weeks of the Wright sermons. TV producers & cable networks, when are we going to see sound bites of the sermons of McCain's very inflamatory pastor Hagee? And these too must be shown 24/7 for several days.
The press: try proving to us that fair and honest journalism is not dead, and that you are all not as biased and racist in your reporting as we have all come to believe.

The fact McCain refused to say he didn't, means he did call his wife the c-word. It's political-speak at its finest. If he hadn't called his wife a C*&t, then he would have easily worded his response, "There are many people here who would find that word offensive. I do too, and would never call anyone that word. Let's move to the next question." McCain didn't say that, because he'd be outright lying. He knows he called his wife a c^%t in the heat of things. He knows such gaffes go directly to his temperament, i.e. his ability to govern with a level-head during tense moments.

It's like that famous SNL sketch where Jimmy Carter becomes radioactive during an accident at the Two-Mile Island Nuclear Reactor and becomes extremely large.

The reporter asks: Is it true that the president is 100 feet tall?
Answer: Nooooo! Absolutely not!
Reporter: Is the president 90 feet tall?
Answer: No comment.

No comment=guilty as charged.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:17 AM on 05/05/2008

I see you're not letting comments through. When are you going to do a retraction on your Baptist minister who worked with Dinsmore? Everybody's waiting.

He might be the biggest idiot for all we know, but the main issue is what did McCain say or not say! The main strategy of the right is to attack the messenger to muddle the message. To all people out there, if you are happy with the last 8 years of Bush, please do not vote for Obama/Clinton. Please vote for McCain! Carefull analysis is not your thing, so please go down the road of war, the rich getting richer and huge defecits. By the way, being a democrat is not in my best self interest as I pay more in taxes than most families earn in a year, so why should I care. Well, I also have 2 children whom will have to pay for our indulgence....not very responsible. That is not taking responsibility for our own actions.....thought that was the rights mantra!

Must not. Must not. Must not.

That matters why? I'm trying to enter the mind-set of an ignoramus. Please help.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:55 AM on 05/05/2008

McCain chose to dodge the question ... the reality is that he did call his wife a c**t and it was caught on tape.

I hope the media would bring it up during the general ... because if a man has such a temper that he is willing to call his wife that in public just because she was teasing him ... the public has a right to know.

McCain does have a bad temper.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:30 AM on 05/05/2008

Marty Parrish and Keith Dinsmore both signed into the event as HuffPo correspondents. They both worked for th Biden campaign in Iowa. Do they know each other, and if so why didn't they disclose this for this article? I hope that Jay Rosen will address this issue. At minimum, there is the appearance of an ethics problem here.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:35 PM on 05/04/2008

Great opportunity for McCain to show the world he is honest & answer: "Yes I did, sir. But I regret it. It was a huge mistake."

But McCain did what Republicans do best during presidential campaigns: Like a typical Republican coward, he avoided the question while concurrently coloring the questioner as being unhinged.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:45 PM on 05/04/2008

How exactly did he "color the questioner as being unhinged?" He just ignored the questioner. The questioner did an excellent job of coloring himself as unhinged all by his ownself. And we have it on video! Good job, HuffPo and Obamabots.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:04 PM on 05/04/2008

The questioner asked a question. Only in the ridiculous world of the neocon, would asking a question be considered 'unhinged'

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:56 AM on 05/05/2008

First off McCain probably can't remember what the word C*@T means, second he probably can't remember if he said it or not, and third he's thinking who the hell is Cindy?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:51 PM on 05/04/2008

If Hillary ever called Bill a slut, I'm not voting for her. lol.

You people crack me up.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:10 PM on 05/04/2008

Writing that particular insult off as trivial means to me that you probably haven't had a lot of experience around women.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:57 AM on 05/05/2008

AlgerHiss ... this is difference because it's not just about what he called her ... but that he has a temper and that his temper can get the best of him.

A US president that can't control his temper can be very dangerous considering how much power he would have. One lapse in judgment can have great consequences.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:35 AM on 05/05/2008

Well, Algier, I think the point is, if he did in fact do it, not only what it says about McCain's character, but whether the nature of one's intimate relationships does in fact have bearing on one's ability to govern.

After all, isn't it Republican voters who've said over and over that a President's personal private life and the details of his (or her) intimate relationships are SO entirely relevant to his (or her) ability to run the country?

I sincerely hope it's not true, for everyone's sake, including Mrs.McCain's, but if it is, and that's the kinda big talking tough guy you Republicans want to run, somebody who in a flash of anger over seemingly nothing calls his beautiful wife a disgusting and humiliating name in public, just do us all one big favor.

Spare us the family values and divine moral superiority crap, this time, will you?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:21 PM on 05/04/2008

Sorry Luzi, he DID call her that....in public no less. Can you imagine what goes on behind closed doors?

That term has always been unacceptable to me, and if a man ever called me that name, I would never ever have anything to do with him agan.

When a man spews this particular word to berate a woman, it really demonstrates that he has ZERO...and I mean ZERO respect for women.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:18 AM on 05/05/2008

Concerned

You probably have heard that verbal humiliation using sexually charged "nasty" meant to cause deep shame and embarrassment is considered one of the indicators of spousal (physical) abuse, if not a pre-cursor. Had some couple come before a marriage counselor relating such an incident, I imagine the counselor's first thought would be concerns over safety (usually the wife) in abusive or potentially abusive situations.

And THAT's who the R's are nominating? Gee. I don't care how many medals the guy has.

IF in fact it's true, of course.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:39 PM on 05/06/2008

It's been clearly documented that this man is not a Minister, was trying to curry favor with HuffPo and George Soros and was a reprehensible cad for using such a vulgar term in front of women and children. It has also been clearly shown that the book that carried that canard was financed by George Soros as part of a $40 million dollar effort to smear John McCain. HuffPo should be above such mud slinging, which reflects poorly on Arianna.
