The WSJ has confirmed our earlier assumption: Microsoft has been silent because Microsoft and Yahoo are now negotiating seriously about consummating a friendly deal. Microsoft has raised its bid "by several dollars."

According to the WSJ, a "deal was not imminent and the people familiar with the matter said an agreement was not likely on Friday. The people cautioned that the talks could fail to produce an accord."

The NYT adds that Microsoft has increased its price by "several dollars" (presumably to $32-$33). Yahoo's stock, which has been climbing all day, has now spiked.

You know what's funniest about this is you've got one overgrown mismanaged company trying to take over another overgrown mismanaged company. How much you want to bet that both will be gone in five years. Neither company seems to be able to let a good thing ride. They both take themselves too seriously, all the while running when they can't even walk. Microsoft is like the rest of the US economy it can't do it anymore. Just like the dreams of walking on the moon I think they ought to worry about their flagship product rather than worrying about Google. The US can't even get into space anymore and isn't going to if recent history is any judge. Microsoft is incapable of creating an operating system anybody wants(Balmer uses a Thinkpad). And yahoo is about as incompetent half the time they're stuff is broken, what they did to yahoo maps is tragic.
