Hillary Clinton's acknowledgment this weekend to ignore expert assessments of her gas tax suspension is a marked shift for a candidate known for her interest in policy minutiae. In fact, Clinton has complained about this kind of from-the-hip policy advocacy by the current administration throughout her campaign.

On Sunday, Clinton was asked to name a credible economist who supported her plan to suspend the federal gas tax during the summer months while taxing windfall profits of oil companies. Clinton decided against naming a supporting economist (a task which is admittedly difficult) and instead dismissed such expert advice as "elite opinion":

"We've been for the last seven years seeing a tremendous amount of government power and elite opinion behind policies that don't work well for the middle class... I'm not going to put my lot in with economists."

These comments come on the tail of arguments from her strategist Howard Wolfson:

"There are times that a president will take a position that a broad support of quote-unquote experts agree with. And there are times they will take a position that quote-unquote experts do not agree with."

But it wasn't so long ago that Clinton saw the economic policy, and the role of economic experts, in a very different light. Last month she had this to say about the housing crisis:

"So we need a president who can restore our confidence, a president who is ready to confront complex economic problems with comprehensive solutions, a president who will act at the first signs of trouble, working with experts to identify the problem, with agencies to adapt regulations, with Congress to pass necessary legislation, working to prevent crises rather than just reacting too little too late."

At that time, she recommended addressing the economic crisis by relying on the analysis of a team of economic experts.

"That's why I'm proposing an Emergency Working Group on Foreclosures. It could be led by a distinguished, non-partisan group of economic leaders like Alan Greenspan, Robert Rubin, Paul Volcker."

Indeed, failing to heed experts of all sorts has been one of Clinton's consistent attacks against President Bush. In a speech last August she referenced an executive order that gives political appointees the power to overrule agency experts. She took issue particularly over interferences in healthcare and global climate change.

"It should not take an act of Congress or an act of a Senator to get the President to listen to health experts on a matter of women's health."
"A lawyer previously employed by the American Petroleum Institute, [a political appointee] had no scientific background. Nonetheless, he insisted on editing scientific documents on climate change to cast doubt and greater uncertainty than the experts felt warranted."

Clinton feels so strongly about the threat from subverting the analysis of experts that she has promised to sign an executive order that, according to her website, "restores expert-driven, evidence-based agency decision-making":

Hillary will return to the longstanding practice of giving experts a central voice in agency rulemaking and will direct agencies to pursue evidence-based decisions.

And while her executive order applies directly to the Bush administration's attack on scientific research, Clinton has in the past held the same respect for economic leaders as she has for scientific experts. A few examples of her invoking the calculations of economic experts to develop policy:

Expanding Pre-K

"We now have lots of evidence from hard-headed economists that investing in early childhood makes sense."

Repairing Infrastructure

"Economists estimate that every $1 billion spent on fixing crumbling infrastructure creates nearly 48,000 new jobs."

Of course, all candidates rely on the experience of experts. Clinton's campaign (like other candidates) continually emails reporters citing expert's praise for her myriad policies. She convenes military experts, economic planning experts and healthcare experts to appear with her at campaign events. In late December, her campaign even sent out a letter trumpeting support from over 200 foreign policy experts.

Indeed, there's a key question that remains unasked -- is there any other time, beyond this current gas tax flap, that Clinton has acted against what she saw as the expert consensus?

Across the country, people continue to cite "how important Edwards' endorsement is. Truth be told, Edwards is a drop in the bucket around here (NC). He holds very little political pull with the voters here in the state. People view him pretty much in the same light as Mike Easley...they are Jimmy Carter without the SS Detail. You ask "well who does have pull in this state?" The Senators and Congressmen/women.

Hillary obviously feels her supporters are the uneducated types you find drooling over FoxNews and Rush Libmaugh. This kind of language only resonates with that type. Those who put faith over fact, hot button issues and labels over logic and educated reason.

This bunch has already given us George W. Bush. It's no wonder Hillary (with no credibility left) panders to this electorate desperately. When you can't win the argument with facts, just label those who are educated and with facts as "elitists".

Calling serious, thoughtful individuals "elitist" is not just playing from the Republican playbook.

It's playing from an ANCIENT Republican playbook !

It was Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon who began the labels, colorful as they were, demeaning their opponents as "nattering nabobs", etc.

I think that it's a tragedy that Barack Obama is being criticized for not playing the politics game by dishing out false hopes to the American people. After 7 years of being lied to by one of the worst presidents in history, I would hope that America is hip to the political pandering scheme.
Yes temporary relief would be nice..But in the long term it doesn't help our nation, it just adds to our relying on foreign oil. And $28 for the summer period is not much of an offer. The majority of Democratic senators do not support the plan anyway, and it has been reported that Bush wouldn't sign it anyway. Obama has presented $1,000 tax relief for the Middle class and energy alternatives to oil. What has Clinton presented? False promises for the purpose of political gain. There isn't one economist who supports her views, and I find it fascinating that she has the audacity to thurn the argument around that Obama is out of touch with voters for not supporting this gas tax idea.
If there's someone from Indiana and North Carolina who reads this post, please put this political pandering to an end and vote for someone that truly has your best interests at heart...

most things I have read or heard have praised Obama for this and a recent poll said that more than 70% of people saw the gas tax holiday nonsense as the pandering it is.
let yourself have just a little faith in your fellow voters, you just might be pleasantly surprised.

It is funny to be advised on gasoline prices by a guy who has NO oil experience, and probably doesn't even OWN a car since he lives in NYC. If he DOES own a car, he is well off enough so he can pay $8/gal. It is outrageous that such people know what is good for me. I drive over 100 miles/day as part of my regular day because I live in Houston. So I am all in favor of Clinton tax break plan and her other measures. THAT will bring down the price of oil. Of course, if she is elected and dumps 2 million bbl/day onto the market, the EXPERTS will ALL take a financial bath since prices will CRASH!

For the mentally challenged Obama supporters, I will explain the difference between experts on women's health care, science, and other issues. The experts in those areas do NOT stand to lose lots of money, but in economics they stand to lose a LOT of money if Clinton enacts her measures. The speculators are the ones who are being advised by those same economists who are also profiting from the same oil price rise.

I suggest that readers go to Star=Telegram.com/ed_wallace and look at his article Thank You Bubble Boys for the FACTS on the price rise.

WTF ever. Nice try, your candidate sucks. I'm glad she's being revealed for what she is. It's almost worth it for her to steal the nomination, only to have her party split and the republicans rip her and bill to shreds. she will long for the days of barack when they finish with her.

For mentally challenged Obama supporters, I will explain the difference between experts on women health care, science, and other issues and economics. There is no money that will be LOST by the experts on women's health care, science and others. The gas tax holiday or any of her plans to BURST the speculation bubble, WILL hurt many if not MOST economists who are the ones who are advising the hedge funds and wealthy speculators. Thus it is not surprising that many economists are so violently opposed to her proposals to dampen the price hikes in gas.
I suggest that Obama supporters go out and learn some FACTS about the current oil price rise. You can do this by going to Star-Telegram.com/ed_wallace and look at his column Thank You Bubble Boys.

Don't you get it? It's only experts that disagree with Hillary Clinton that are elitists. Experts who agree with her are infallible geniuses & should be listened to. It's just like the metrics that we should use to pick the Democratic nominee - if they favor her nomination, they're valid; if they favor Obama, they're meaningless & unimportant. Being so adept with this kind of logic, she would be an absolutely brilliant commander-in-chief who would be even better than George Bush at cherry picking intelligence & would very soon have all the information she needs to launch her nuclear obliteration of Iran...

Europe has single-payer health care, lower teen pregnancy rates, a lower infant mortality rate, higher gas taxes, a better rail system, and now a stronger currency.

Think we could learn anything?

they also don't have the military investment as we have, they can take care of their people. Our 42.5 cents from every dollar goes towards our military might. It is expensive to stay FREE though Europe is very much free to me what I have experienced and not one of 100 people sits in prison either.

Obama sure hasn't since HE is lying about HIS health care plan. He says in his speeches that he is in favor of universal health care, but he is OPPOSED to it on his web site. When he gets specific, which is RARE, he even admits that he does NOT want such a thing.

Campaigning, ideally, is how we understand a candidate's position, plans for change, etc. giving all individuals data to cast an informed vote.

How can any candidate promise change BEFORE they are elected? Remember, this is still George Bush's administration whether we like or not.

Hillary Clinton's proposal to cut the federal gas tax doesn't seem feasible. Is she going to send a "memo" to Congress to get it done? If so, isn't there conflict of interest considering that she is NOT the Democratic nominee, let alone the POTUS?

We trust our leaders to "lead", not to make promises that they just can't fulfill.

Her argument isn't against economists. Her argument is to hoodwink voters into voting for her. No amount of analysis is necessary here, folks. It is blatant pandering.
